Existing somewhere between the post-psychedelic period of Soft Machine and the electric funk of Herbie Hancock’s Headhunters, Black And White, the 1976 album from Norway’s Vanessa is without question a formidable beast of a jazz-rock record. A potent brew of sonic experimentation and pulsating off-kilter groove. Taking their name from the genus of Nymphalidae butterfly, Vanessa was founded in 1971 by saxophonist Svend Undseth and pianist Frode Holm, the founder of the Oslo record store turned imprint, Compendium Records. Unsurprisingly analogous to the music championed across the Compendium catalogue Black And White is clearly influenced by the UK Canterbury scene, highlighted by Compendium’s focus on the recordings of Soft Machine alumni Hugh Hopper and Elton Dean. Vanessa’s spirit also lies synonymous with the collective pedigree on the label’s roster including British progressive jazz stalwart Keith Tippett and Mirage (a UK group consisting of ex-members of Centipede and The Mike Westbrook Orchestra), together with the avant-rock collective Henry Cow and the experimental synthesiser-jazz of US ex-pat Joe Gallivan (together with Charles Austin).

Often dubbed the ‘Compendium house band’ owing to Holm’s association with the label, the Vanessa sound is inherently familiar yet undeniably original. Each of the album’s four long compositions are a meld of complex angular jazz laced with swirling electronic textures - furious rhythms that surge in intoxicating intensity before easing into fluid passages of soulful post-bop. The dichotomy of these styles plants the group firmly into radical new jazz territory alongside their Canterbury contemporaries. Despite their brief existence, the band, alongside the label left an indelible mark on Norwegian jazz-rock and the headier side of European progressive music at large.

Sensational reissue for the first volume of iconic compilation Simla Beat 70. A psych garage manifesto, the record consisted of groups who appeared at the All-India Simla Beat ‘battle of the bands’ contest held in two years (1970 and '71) in Bombay. The annual event and the records were sponsored by The Imperial Tobacco Company. Bands from all around India would compete for first prize. The album - indeed - was not recorded live on the stage but in a primitive makeshift studio using very little overdubbing or sound reinforcement. The sound is generally influenced by the proto-garage western movement of the mid sixties and later became a massive cult for all the 70s rock fans.

Probably very few people today have ever heard of the Finnish band called Uranus. In the short time of their existence in the mid-seventies, the group recorded their sole album Aamun hauta (“The Grave of the Morning”) which remained mostly unnoticed by the music consuming public. As drummer Jari Unha says, “the time just wasn’t right for the kind of music we were playing”. The more rewarding it is now, nearly half a century later, to dig the album up from the grave of oblivion and let its happy soul groove reach our ears. With the help of historical perspective, it’s perhaps easier now to appreciate this extremely well played and rare early Finnish dive into the vibrating musical territory inhabited by legendary figures such as Otis Redding and Stevie Wonder.

In the autumn of ’75 Uranus drove to Lahti and recorded Aamun hauta in Pekka Nurmikallio’s Microvox studio. Jari Unha is amused to remember the pink Volga of the trombone player Hannu Lehtonen. “We went to record American soul music with the pride of the Soviet car industry. Almost like a detail from an Aki Kaurismäki movie!”

It is presumed that Aamun hauta was too daring a deviation from the mainstream of the time to get the attention it would have deserved. On top of that, Basf had no guts or will to promote the LP. It was an optional subscriber’s gift in Popfoto magazine, together with albums by Kummitus, Kyklooppi and Horseshoe, but due to the lack of money, the short-lived magazine failed to succeed.

As for Uranus, things folded soon after recording the album. Soul music didn’t sell in live circuits either. For some time the group continued accompanying Markku Aro on dance venue gigs. The members have since made long and versatile careers in music.

Meanwhile, the original vinyl of Aamun hauta has become a rare collector’s item. Majanen has noticed someone in Italy is selling the LP for the price of 70 euros. Svart Records is proud to re-release this delicious and invitingly groovy album. Happy listening!

Getting their start in the mid-1960s as a covers band, the Surrey-based group that began as The Late and who would be forced to take the name Unicorn mid-way through the recording of this excellent debut LP soon understood that originals made better sense, pointed in that direction by the success of Crosby, Stills and Nash. Given greater depth by Gerry Rafferty’s producer, Hugh Murphy, Uphill All The Way makes for superb listening, the musical craftsmanship yielding intricate textures beneath Ken Baker’s dreamy lyrics, the intelligent folk rock complete with country and western underpinnings. A must for UK folk rock fans!

Fast forward to 1974 and Blue Pine Trees finds the band at their finest with sweeping harmonies and bluegrass tinges, and with Pink Floyd’s David Gilmour in the producer’s chair, all of their glorious potential is realised on this lost gem of an album that is fully ripe for rediscovery. Wah Wah is proud to release the first ever legit vinyl reissue of New Zealand's legendary Underdogs' second LP. By the time of this album, originally released in late 1970, The Underdogs line-up had changed. The original Underdogs had disbanded in 1969, and original guitarist Harvey Mann and bass player Neil Edwards decided to rebirth it with the help of Glen 'Pig' Absolum on drums - hence the band's nickname Pig, Mann & Edwards. This power trio line-up also saw the initial Underdogs UK flavoured R&B sound get heavier and evolve towards a more Cream-ier - Hendrix influenced territory. It was recorded under the production of former Brew man Bob Gillett in their native Auckland and saw its original release on the PYE label.

This is a 500 copies only reissue, housed in its original artwork in a vintage styled backflaps sleeve and featuring gatefold poster insert.

Formed in Lewisham, southeast London, punk band the Business joined the Oi! scene after supporting the Four Skins in 198l. Debut single ‘Harry May’ hit the Indie charts before the group disintegrated, leading frontman Micky Fitz to recruit new members. Ugo Busoni's “Valvole” is a classic example of the so-called library music records released – between the end of the Sixties and up to the Nineties – in Italy as in the rest of the world, in order to provide 'background music' to be used in the editing of news broadcasts, radio and newsreels. These were records made by highly experienced composers and musicians who, in a very short time and with limited or non-existent budgets, had to make music to be synchronized to images. For obvious reasons, they had to be tracks of short duration, characterized by a certain didactic 'formalism' that allowed an immediate choice for their main use. The titles given to the compositions had to recall a specific topic or setting that would make the choice of technicians easy for synchronization. Tokyo, Uscita Da Scuola, Raid, Polvere Cosmica, Su Una Nuvola, Controspionaggio and Starne are, not surprisingly, some of the titles of the tracks of this album published more than forty years ago by Nuova Idea. Sounds from the Far East, folky and rock guitars, psychedelic rhythms, avant-garde tunes, cosmic echoes and much more are some of the elements of one of the most indecipherable records of that historical period, reissued for the first time on vinyl by Musica Per Immagini with a brand new artwork.

Non-standard Californian punkband United Experiments of America was formed in San Francisco in 1978, centring on frontwoman Denise Semiroux, alias De De Troit, and guitarist Michael Kowalsky, who tragically died of a heroin overdose that same year. Debut album Illusions of Grandeur, released by Posh Boy in 1980, captured the tense atmospheres and in-between nature of the group’s sound, part hardcore and part dirge-rock. This recreation of the Turning Point self-titled 7” from 1989 is the second release as Revelation Records reissues the band’s out-of-print catalog. From New Jersey, Turning Point were the state’s answer to the hardcore movement of New York and Connecticut of the late-’80s, playing up and down the East Coast with Chain OF Strength, Bold, Judge, Burn, Mouthpiece, and many more before disbanding in 1991. Jade Tree and Think Fast! Records released the band’s catalog as a discography in the early 2000s so none of the releases have been issued as stand-alone records since they were first put out.

The roots of hard rock act Tucky Buzzard lie in psychedelic group, The End, who supported The Rolling Stones on an early tour, leading Bill Wyman to produce their sole LP. The band then morphed into Tucky Buzzard, now with scorching lead guitar licks and Hammond organ parts to the fore, and Wyman still on board as producer and manager. For their final album, Buzzard, released on Deep Purple’s Purple imprint in 1973, there is a mix of hard-edged blues rock, with a fine interpretation of perennial classic, “Who Do You Love,” and wistful originals like “Hanging On In There.” As ever, Wyman’s sterling production and presence on acoustic and electric piano makes this one a must for all Stones fans.

TUBEWAY ARMY was the name of GARY NUMAN"s band. Formed in 1977, their self-titled debut album was released at the tail end of 1978. In addition to Gary, the band consisted of Paul Gardiner on bass and backing vocals and Jess Lidyard on drums.The album was a segue from the punk-leaning sounds of their early singles, to the pioneering electronic music that Gary Numan became known for. The phrase "garagey sci-fi rock" was used in reference to this album. This album truly paved the way for Gary Numan to become an electronic pioneer. It was during the sessions for this album that he came across a minimoog synthesizer by accident in the recording studio, and the rest is history.Shortly after this album"s release, Tubeway Army recorded their follow-up, Replicas, which contained "Are "Friends" Electric?", which became the first synthesizer-based number 1 hit of the electronic era in 1979. After its release, Numan opted to drop the Tubeway Army name and release music under his own name, retaining the musicians from Tubeway Army as his backing band.
