Demon Head releases the new album ‘Through Holes Shine the Stars’ in September 2024 via Svart Records

Demon Head is proud to announce the release of Through Holes Shine the Stars on Svart Records. The album is the fifth full-length from the band that celebrated their first 10 years of existence last year, and it is undoubtedly another milestone on their tireless – and very own – path through the wilderness. It is a deeper, darker well of tones and melodies than before, while being significantly more extroverted than their last releases. All in the seemingly effortless, strangely catchy, and unique manner that Demon Head have become known for.

The eight songs were written collectively during several concentrated sessions from 2019–2022 and recorded entirely by the band themselves from October 2022 to March 2023 in their own studios in Copenhagen and the west coast of Ireland. Guitarist, vocalist and multi-instrumentalist producer, Birk Gjerlufsen Nielsen expands on the process: “This long and careful process has allowed us to reach a balance between structural precision and artistic expansion, melodic simplicity, and compositional depth. It feels like we’ve uncovered every possibility within each of these songs without losing track of the original nerve.”

In continuation of previous collaborations, Demon Head have mixed the album with the legendary engineer and producer Flemming Rasmussen (Metallica, Morbid Angel, Ensiferum, etc.) in Sweet Silence Studios. Vocalist and recording engineer Marcus Ferreira Larsen remarks: “Like any true master Flemming has created a direct and hard-hitting, transparent mix that does nothing but enhance what is already communicated in the compositions and the performance. He helped us place everything in the landscape that we've carved through recording everything ourselves once again.”

With a running time of 47 minutes, this is Demon Heads most extensive work to date. Birk Gjerlufsen Nielsen comments on one of the songs: “The Chalice opens with a discordant anthem that unbelievably enough combines the qualities of late Scott Walker with Europe’s The Final Countdown. It’s a good introduction to how Marcus and I have worked closely together on complimenting each other’s voices. It’s consistent that we sing together throughout the whole record. Between the two of us there’s a balance of equal parts raw charm and melodic desperation”.

180g Vinyl!Recorded at a cabin in the country, all the original Exhaust elements - ultra-low-end bass moan, loping breakbeat trapkit, live reel-to-reel tape scratch - remain at the core of this album. Spliced and diced at the original Hotel2Tango during mixing, the record is an excellent slab of punk-minimalist collage. Bassist Gordon Krieger adds bass clarinet on several tracks, while Mike Zabinski (tapes) and Aidan Girt (drums) deploy loops, signal processing, machine noise and live beats around slow, stripped-down, see-saw bass guitar. The result is a paranoid late-night roam through the proverbial deserted city, picking up the occasional sinister, garbled transmission along the way. Refreshingly absent are the endlessly self-replicating strains and sounds of electronica; Exhaust focused squarely on its own organic playing (and broken gear) to craft these electronically-processed tracks, without facile recourse to the 'add-some-blips' strategy that plagued so much so-called post-rock. Aidan's 1-Speed Bike DJ alter-ego is integrated back into Exhaust's live trio context. Rather than re-mixing stand-alone tracks as he did on the Exhaust debut, he cuts, pastes and filters his rhythms all over the record. Combined with Gordon and Mike's forays into sound art and sound environment recordings, all three members put their heads and ears together to execute a series of controlled experiments sourced from their distinct and deliberate palette of riffs and melodic passages.

With six officially released albums, two more in the can, four probably-never-to-see-the-light-of-day records in his closet, a few live albums on the shelf-culled from literally five years of straight touring-and a Myspace song-a-day project, the quietly prolific Jason Anderson returns to K with The Hopeful and the Unafraid. The Hopeful was made at Soma Studios in Chicago, on a two-day tour break in January of 2006. The Metabolismus collective has been making music since the mid-1980's, selfreleasingmost of their early material on cassette and vinyl LPs. The band comes from the town of Stuttgart, Germany and creates music that is rooted in the rich tradition of German experimental bands such as Can, Amon Duul, Popul Voh andKraftwerk with touchstones in rock, folk and electronic music. With this release they are joined by Samara Lubelski and provide two beautiful tracks of arboreal shimmer with glimpses of soft 60s psychedelic sheen. Metabolismus do not see themselves as just a band. They evolved out of a typicalEast-Swabian street-folk-punk-band into what they call an "exartperihoppmental workshop". They released 33 tapes in the first ten years of existence and 33 records in the second, and are always in search of new sounds & experiences, concepts& structures, with absolutely no concession to commercialism. In this blend of purity in motive and inspiration grows the seed for "Metabolismusic", which can be grasped as a sort of musical time bomb. The press release for The Social Club makes reference to these editions being akin to postcards, and this one is a postcard in the truest sense. It captures a moment and represents a place of sorts. If you walk down Canal Street on any given night, odds are you will hear the sound of Messages coming from a fifth floor walkup. If you stopped,you would hear it go on for hours and it would be the sound of Tres Warren (of Psychic Ills) and Taketo Shimada mashing sine waves, bass loops, guitars, samplers and turntables into a storm in between bouts of playing techno and psychedelic improvrecords. The resulting sound consists of slowly shifting repetitions, heavy monotone low end and smoky echoes that conjure unexpected subsonic grooves. Bubblegum XX features features members of Queens of the Stone Age, PJ Harvey, Greg Dulli, Izzy and Duff from Guns & Roses/Velvet Revolver, among other assorted rock luminaries. When Bubblegum was released, Mark chose to let it speak for itself and didn"t have much to say aside from within the small handful of interviews he did at the time. In 2017, he released a book of lyrics and writings called I Am The Wolf and wrote about the album then. Shared here are some of his words about the record. Song favorites include "When Your Number Isn"t Up," and "Strange Religion," a love song I wrote in a Tokyo hotel room. While many of the songs came from a place of dejection and ennui at the end of a tempestuous relationship, "Bombed" in particular came about when, after I had written and recorded it in just a few minutes, I put a microphone in front of Wendy Rae Fowler, my soon-to-be-ex-wife, and had her sing along while simultaneously hearing it for the first time. I loved the result as it reminded me of Royal Trux, a band I liked. When I insisted on using the first and only take of the song, it made her slightly unhappy, but to be fair, that was just one of many things I did that had that effect.
