It’s the 40th anniversary year of their inaugural, incendiary, nihilistic, and influential underground punk record Landshark! And this year, first wave West Coast hardcore punk scene and Berkeley punk alumni, released their ninth studio LP No Warning Shots Fired, consisting of 13 urgent and caustic hardcore punk, crossover thrash, metal, and crust tracks. Profiled in the 2017 documentary Turn It Around: The Story of East Bay Punk, Fang have influenced the sound of and have been covered by many bands through the years. Metallica recorded “The Money Will Roll Right In” during the Master of Puppets sessions. Kurt Cobain named Landshark his sixth favorite record of all time. Butthole Surfers, Green Day, Nirvana, Metallica, Mudhoney, and many others have included songs by Fang on studio albums or in live sets. Fang features Sammytown on vocals, Tommy and Obi on guitars, and Brandon Brown on bass, all of whom have been the core lineup for the last eight years, with headlining tours in Cuba, Hawaii, Japan, Mexico, and throughout the United States. Drummer Steven Gonzales joined the band this past year. Fang are pending announcements for a return to Mexico in the fall, a 19-date European tour in August, and a Landshark 40th anniversary SF Bay Area event in June of 2023.

Early Band Of Holy Joy existed somewhere on the cut-up side of proto-industrial music, resting between Marc Stewart & Maffia, Sonic Youth, and Current 93, and proponents of a more romantic musical language - Virginia Astley, Dead Can Dance and Cocteau Twins among them - all artists whose work BPHJ's music sat comfortably alongside across on a stream of low-budget vinyl and cassette compilations after the start of the eighties. A great leap in polish led to a deal with Rough Trade and several early '90s albums which flirted with the mainstream, with BOHJ almost an odder, less obvious cousin to Dexys Midnight Runners. When these releases failed to take off as hoped, lost years followed on smaller labels and self-released projects, until the renewed urgency of the 2016 Brutalism Begins At Home EP and increasingly majestic albums on which saw leader Johny Brown's lyricism enter a new phase. The common thread through BOHJ's four decades of recordings is the foundational warmth and humanity of Brown's words. The band's earliest recordings seemed garnered from street-level observations of neighbourhood people and sights. By the time of near-hit "Tactless", their songs - whatever the underlying impulses may have been - had become immediate enough to overcome the mystery of a line like "Do you remember the swan that was shot in the park?" Over each of their last three albums - Funambulist We Love You, Neon Primitives and Dreams Take Flight - BOHJ has bettered itself, and may now have reached their apex, Fated Beautiful Mistakes. We live in a time of generally justifiable gloom and awkward uncertainty. So it may appear cavalier to claim this album sounds revelatory in that context, but Band Of Holy Joy's strengths rest largely in Johny Brown and the band's ability to capture a wider societal feeling. One listen to the escapist fantasy of "Our Flighty Season Under The Flighty Sun" and its slightly-haunted ending speaks volumes beyond most of what passes for music in 2023, and it's just one of many perfect moments on this album.

Sean Huber, best known as the drummer of the beloved & defunct band Modern Baseball, has been releasing music with his band Steady Hands since 2013. Back for the first time since 2018 with new album "Cheap Fiction," Huber pays homage to all of the deities you'd expect someone with a New Jersey birth certificate and a dog named Bruce to worship, with rollicking saxophone and piano over tales of hard-on-their-luck neighborhoods, and stadium-rock-ready guitar zaps over odes to the misrepresented people of Florida. He grapples with lapsed religion like so many with Irish names have done before him. And he fits in real nicely with the modern heroes of Philadelphia's punk scene, blending the best of heartland rock and straight-up punk with his own penchant for the tropical. Huber's lyrics tell stories of a very real world where people in power use it for evil, the people who need help don't get it, but the person at home makes life beautiful despite it all, and there are plenty of friends to commiserate with. He found inspiration in the world around him, including history and politics books. The album reflects his belief in balance and his ethos that all great comedy is based on truth.

Wild Flag is a Portland, Oregon- and Washington, DC based quartet consisting of Carrie Brownstein, Rebecca Cole, Mary Timony, and Janet Weiss. The members of Wild Flag have played in numerous and notable bands including Sleater-Kinney, Helium, Quasi, The Minders, Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks, and others. The four musicians who make up Wild Flag have known one another for well over a decade; playing together felt almost inevitable. Brownstein and Weiss were in Sleater-Kinney and toured with Timony's band Helium on numerous occasions. Brownstein and Timony played in a side project called The Spells. Rebecca Cole's Portland-based band The Minders was a frequent opener for Sleater-Kinney. Weiss and Cole play together in the 1960's garage-rock cover band The Shadow Mortons. After collaborating on a score for a documentary, the ease with which they worked together proved infectious and promising. Wild Flag was formed. In April 2011, they went to Sacramento, California, where they recorded their self-titled album with engineer Chris Woodhouse at the Hangar. All tracks were recorded live except for the vocals. It remains their first and only album. The cover art was designed by filmmaker Mike Mills (Thumbsucker, Beginners). Subsequently "Wild Flag" was rated 'Best of 2011' at Rolling Stone, SPIN, NME, Pitchfork, Stereogum, Village Voice Pazz and Jop, Consequence, PopMatters, Under the Radar and more. The Rockets, influenced by jazz and blues, unknowingly drifted to the best quality surf and instrumental rock made in Chile. "Surf Shake" (1965), their first instrumental album, includes genius mix of styles: jazz standards (Caravana, Amor en venta, No es necesariamente así); Go Go (Jarrito de cerveza); R'n'R (Candy, Desperado, Hola Ximena); spaghetti western (Leyenda india) and surf (Playa solitaria) and is released now on vinyl, from the original IRT masters! The Rockets was founded in 1961, the year the band recorded their first 45rpm. The following year Carlos Gonzalez, arranger, producer, and later solo singer, joins the band, giving them a new twist with a refreshing sound. After the release of some singles and the retirement of Carlos Gonzalez, in 1965 they released their first instrumental album which included their biggest and most distinctive hit, the surf "Playa solitaria". At that time two great exponents of national music were part of the group: Horacio Saavedra and Nano Vicencio. The other importance of the group is that they accompanied several national artists, among them Antonio Zabaleta y el Clan 91. The Rockets were the backing band for many of the new wave rockers, but in '65 they decided to record on their own. As they should. That's how "Surf Shake" came about. They recorded it with guitar, Hohner bass, Ludwig drums, a metallophone or glockenspiel and a Philicordia keyboard.

"Mac's" (1968) by Los Mac's is released now on vinyl, from the original IRT masters! Los Mac's were one of the first rock bands formed in Chile. They are justly considered pioneers of rock in Chile, and although their history ended before the beginning of the seventies, their mark is fundamental in the history of the genre in the country. Los Mac's was one of the inaugural bands of Chilean rock, started in Valparaíso in 1962 and left as a heritage a classic song of the psychedelic music of the sixties: "La muerte de mi hermano", composed by their fellow countryman Payo Grondona. The group started in 1962 in the neighborhood of Playa Ancha, as a rock cover band that was revealed and heard in some national radios. It was the surname of the brothers David and Carlos Mac-Iver (its first exponents) that gave the group its name. During their teenage years, in Playa Ancha, the Mac-Iver brothers met frequently with budding figures of Chilean culture, such as the singer-songwriters Gitano Rodríguez, Payo Grondona and the poet Sergio Badilla Castillo. In 1965, after playing in festivals and universities in Buenos Aires, they moved to Santiago, where they met the composer and keyboardist Willy Morales, who shared the same musical interests and decided to join the group, later incorporating Eric Franklin. Morales was the son of artists and like Franklin, came from the experience of a very popular group (Alan y sus Bates). Now, with their own songs, Los Mac's began a new stage that would mark the history of national rock. Their initial singles were recorded starting in 1964, under an agreement with the record company RCA. That same music company backed the album "Go Go / 22", their first full-length, in 1966, with songs by The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Kinks, The Shadows, Bob Dylan and only one original "No Te Comprendo" (authored by Willy Morales). The Mac's were strongly influenced by the Beatles' Sgt. Pepper's lonely hearts club band, which led them to experiment in the field of psychedelia, prior to the recording of their album Kaleidoscope Men, released in December 1967. This is, perhaps, their most representative work that remained as a legacy for the history of Chilean rock. The instrumental track "El Evangelio de la Gente Sola" (where the electric organ of Willy Morales stands out) is simply overwhelming and hallucinating. In 1968, the group, led by the hand of Morales, decides to leave for Europe, with a farewell concert at the Santa Maria University. They settled in Genoa, Italy, but for various reasons the band disbanded the following year.

"In many ways, Goose is a conglomeration of music from the town we grew up in, and the songs are a collection of many different experiences and influences," observes Rick. We get these four defined seasons in rural Connecticut, and there's a powerful stillness.""Our area is a very reflective place," agrees Peter. "We're in the woods, and we all find peace from the setting. "We've done our fair share of sweating it out and paying our dues on the road. There was a natural progression until we really got on the same page creatively. It's been a long, weird trip. At times, it was tumultuous. The record is a companion to those growing pains."Goose introduce the record with "So Ready" and it's counterpart "(s?tellite)." Just shy of ten minutes together, the tracks twist and turn through synthesizer "emitting hilariously sexual vibes," jazz-y bass, and a chantable hook."Labyrinth" dives down "a deeper rabbit hole" as warm guitar wraps around shimmering piano originally culled from Rick's school days."`Labyrinth' is one of the only pieces I wrote in my latter high school days," he recalls. "It's got this thematic relevance with the weird sense of humor, rambunctiousness, and partying from back in the day."As the first proper Goose song, "Spirit of the Dark Horse" originated after a "twelve-minute meditation" between Rick and Trevor back in 2015. It unfurls as a captivating trip in and of itself and "holds a lot of meaning." The same could be said of the album title. As legend has it, Shenanigans Nite Club really popped off in the eighties. Rick's uncle worked as a bouncer and manager for the iconic haunt and shared all manner of wild stories with his nephew. He even gave Rick a sign from the original club, which overlooks the basement where the boys jam."Shenanigans has always been around," Rick elaborates. "It became the idea of the record. It celebrates this element of nostalgia and good memories as we move forward."In the end, Goose chart their own course and ultimately encourage everyone else to do the same."In the end, our dream is to inspire people to step off the beaten path," Rick leaves off. "There are a lot of voices that tell you to play it safe. I think the coolest thing in the world is when someone breaks free and goes for whatever weird shit they dream of doing."

"Frutos del País" (1972) is released now on vinyl, from the original IRT masters! Apart from "Sin ti", their most popular single, there are other songs that move away from this aesthetic, such as "Salgamos a correr" or "Tema de Willy", which give a plus to the album for not only sounding different, but also for being very good songs. Frutos del País was born from the union of two Chilean rock bands, Los Picapiedras and Beat 4. Their sound was quite advanced for the time, their song "Sin ti" is still heard on the radio in Chile. The band's sound is very influenced by Procol Harum, but that doesn't detract from its tremendous quality. Maybe this song reminds them of Procol Harum's "A Whiter Shade of Pale", especially the sound of the Hammond organ. They did not have a direct musical relationship with the groups that in the early 70's fused rock influences with acoustic folk instruments, but Frutos del País belonged to the generation that at that time changed the guard for this music in Chile. By genealogy, they were the continuation of bands from the previous decade, such as Los Picapiedras and the Beat 4. Their two albums, "Frutos del País" (1972) and the more unnoticed "Y volar... y volar" (1974) described a brief trajectory but immortalized by one of the authentic and most recognizable hymns in the history of rock in Chile: the ballad "Sin ti", characterized by the Hammond organ of keyboardist Hugo Raymond and the evocative lyrics of singer Reinaldo Rhino González.
