Tanukichan, the musical project of Oakland, CA’s Hannah van Loon, has been a prominent figure in modern shoegaze music since 2016, when she first collaborated with Chaz Bear of Toro y Moi. Together, they released an EP and two full-length albums under Bear's Company Records, culminating in 2023's Gizmo. With her new EP Circles, out September 20th, 2024, via Carpark Records, van Loon ventures into new territory by teaming up with a new producer for the first time – Franco Reid.

The genesis of their partnership dates back to the Gizmo campaign, when Reid noticed van Loon wearing an Incubus shirt in a press photo on Instagram. Intrigued by whether or not van Loon was a genuine fan, he sent her a DM. Their shared musical interest sparked a dialogue that eventually led to the creation of the single "npc" in 2023.

Lead single “City Bus,” offers a reflection on van Loon's childhood bus rides in San Francisco, evoking the stop-and-go rhythm of commuter life through hard-hitting drums and heavy guitar feedback phasing in and out of the mix. Themes of self-reflection and societal belonging permeate the track, echoing van Loon's ongoing personal journey.

While much of Circles delves into internal struggles, “It Gets Easier” takes on a more celebratory tone as van Loon realizes she’s developed a heightened sense of maturity when dealing with hardship. “It feels easier to let go of situations or people that don’t serve me,” reflects van Loon, “Or if they can’t be avoided, at least I don’t have to dwell on the sadness or discomfort I feel when letting someone down.” Introduced by Reid, nu-gaze sensation Wisp, contributes a verse in her similarly ethereal vocal style.

There is a notable shift on Circles when you consider the first three Tanukichan releases were produced by a pioneer of the chillwave genre. With van Loon’s consistently dreamy songwriting and Reid at the helm, Tanukichan enters new sonic territory that feels larger, arena-ready, and more like a highspeed night drive than the hazy summer dream of its predecessors.

William Tyler is a Nashville guitarist and composer. He spent years woodshedding and touring with Nashville groups like Lambchop and Silver Jews before breaking away to focus on his own version of instrumental guitar music. In the summer of 2022 he was fortunate to have an artist residency at Epicenter in Green River, Utah, a tiny high desert town three hours from anything, One of the other non-profit friends of Epicenter was The Tank is Rangely, Colorado. The Tank itself is a giant and tall disused water tower from the high days of train travel and used to store water to cool train engines and such. Empty for decades, it is now an internationally recognized destination for sound art and almost unparalleled echo/acoustics. William Tyler decided to book recording time there and chose to re-interpret all of the songs of hie 2019 album "Goes West" in a sparse yet cavernous solo acoustic setting: "Something about the frailty and space I wanted the songs to imply was lost in the over-production of the studio record, This felt like a reclamation of the songs and also a symbolic tribute to the stunning, haunted and vast possibilities of the American West, especially at the twilight of American Empire.’

MaDDaM is the new garage rock/punk band launched by Damiano Cason & Damiano "Wilson" Negrisoli (Bee Bee Sea, Yonic south). The band explains: "What neoliberalism has established is a lonely place. Its driving force is the individualized pursuit of constant fulfillment, altering the way we interact with each other. Whatever we do to achieve satisfaction, there's always a lingering sense of something missing. Happiness and contentment are never the goal; they've been replaced by profit margins and excess. These are endless and extremely unevenly distributed. Anger arises in this vacuum. With this album, we want to remind that it's the economic conditions and inequalities that should be the target of our collective frustration. They create depression, despair, and a downward spiral. Being anti-fascists is not enough; we must also be anti-capitalists." This anger is also reflected musically in the furious 11 new tracks. Filled with powerful guitar riffs and sometimes bilingual lyrics, some of the songs also introduce a new, deep style of spoken word for Giver, making the eventual eruptions that much more impactful. Formed in 1990, Tool’s current line-up includes vocalist Maynard James Keenan, guitarist Adam Jones and drummer Danny Carey. Justin Chancellor has been the band's bassist since 1995, replacing original bass player Paul D'Amour. At the recommendation of several friends, she began working with Lucas Knapp, a Philly based producer who has contributed work to many Dear Life releases (including Florry's The Holey Bible, Hour's Ease the Work, and Joey Nebulous's Joey Spumoni Creamy Dreamy Party All the Time ). Lucas and Nina's recording sensibilities aligned quite seamlessly, breathing new energy into the songs in what she describes as an "effortless collaboration". Born in a Metz's bunker during the 2006 summer, The Feeling of Love is at first the solo project of G.Marietta (A.H. Kraken's guitarist and singer, In the red records). Ephemeral idea that initially couldn't have gone further than a few short songs, belched and recorded for the tape label Luisance Sonore. The postulate was to play on the garage blues and no-wave's codes in order to find a primitive, repetitive and minimal idea of rock'n'roll. Finally, after 2 years playing gigs in Europe, and a few 7" out (Yakisakana, Floridas Dying, Rococo records, etc.), the "one man band" mutates: from a one-piece to a two-pieces, the Feeling of Love is more generally a three-pieces band, with Seb Normal (the Normals, Crash Normal,etc.) on drums, and s. (A.H.Kraken, Vingt Mille Punks) on keyboards. The Feeling of Love put out then his first two LP's, "Petite tu es un hit" on Yakisakana and "Ok judge revival" on Kill Shaman records. On the latter, the blues and his repetitive gimmicks that were the driving force to reach a trance state are being perverted by krautrock and psychedelism. A year after, the band carries on with the "kraut space garage" vein on his third album, on Born Bad records (mars 2011). Songs stretch out, the drums go more tribal, the synth hammers out his keys on an infinite highway, and the guitar gets lost in delay pedal's fog.

But that thought is quickly brushed away by the warm summerwind of Twisted Beds. And as soon as you reach Love Is Love and Hell Teema, you are sure that nothing here is copied! This is a band, completely at home with what they do. Sure, you can tell the influences and heroes in the songs. But it's got to be that way. Because this is POP! In capital letters. And Gary see everything, the whole world, just like Girls, Yuck or West Coast, through unique, new eyes. Through the eyes of teenagers. Teenagers who kiss for the first time at a Pavement show. Release Info //Yuri Landman is a Dutch experimental luthier who has made several avantgardistic electric string instruments for a bunch of artists including Lee Ranaldo (Sonic Youth), Liars, Blood Red Shoes etc. This release is a colloboration of him with JadFair (Half Japanese) & avantgarde sound artist Philippe Petit.Bio // YURI LANDMANYuri Landman (1973) is an experimental instrument builder and musician. After a career as a comic book artist as well as a musician in the bands Zoppo and Avec-A, Yuri Landman began designing experimental musical instruments. Based on prepared guitar techniques, he built his first instrument in 2001 to solve the inaccuracy of instant preparations. In 2006 he got in contact with Liars. Developed over six years of prototyping, he fully realised the Moodswinger for them with commissions from numerous other musicians to follow. Yuri has custom built derivatives for such musical luminaries as Sonic Youth, Half Japanese, Enon, Lou Barlow, dEUS, The Dodos, Blood Red Shoes,Liars, HEALTH, Liam Finn, The Luyas, The Veils, Melt- Banana, Micachu & The Shapes, The Go! Team, These Are Powers, Kate Nash, Women, Action Beat, Peter James Taylor, Rhys Chatham, Dustin Wong, Philippe Petit and others.Around 2008 he started giving lectures and presentations with his instruments, leading to a request in 2009 for a practical building workshop. This became the rise of the Home Swinger project. A Gesamtkunstwerk consisting of a DIY-workshop where people build their own electric instrument and often followed by an afternoon rehearsal on the second day and a 40 minute ensemble performance with multiple Home Swingers, drums, basses, and guitars in the tradition of the Rhys Chatham and Glenn Branca compositions. Featuring two of our favourite people and musicians, Alexander Tucker and Daniel O'Sullivan. Both of these gentlemen have graced the series previously - Daniel with his Victorian prog-synth band Miasma And The Carousel Of Headless Horses, and Alexander with Ginnugagap, a solo session, and a guest appearance on a forthcoming set from Bardo Pond. We have long held a flame for Furrier, the Grumbling Fur album on the icy cool Aurora Borealis label. We quickly invited them for a session - but with little expectation of anything happening in the near future. This was a group whose members define the word prolific - O'Sullivan himself had at least four bands on the go at the time. Still, we're nothing if not hopeful. Lo and behold, he Fur came back with not only a date for recording, but the tantalising prospect of a new sound - more focussed and stripped back - with more op' sensibilities coming to the fore. The results are stellar. As soon as the loping breakbeat and pentatonic piano run of "Wylderness Waiting" kicked in, we knew he Fur had created something very special on our behalf - the extra space and minimal approach providing a wonderful backdrop to Alex and Daniel's instantly recognisable lyrical harmonies.
