Formed in 1977 in South Shields the Angelic Upstarts self-released debut single released in 1978 was ‘The Murder Of Liddle Towers’. The song highlighted the death of Liddle Towers who died after having been beaten in police custody, a crime that was covered up and no officers ever brought to justice. The record became a rallying point against police brutality. The record, and it’s B side ‘Police Oppression’ became a classic punk single and is a passionate call for justice. Mensi: “Liddle Towers was our protest single. It was the story of a boxing coach who was arrested for being drunk and disorderly. He was examined by a doctor and was perfectly healthy. Then in the morning was discovered dead and had injuries which the police surgeon described as being similar to that of a person who had been in a serious 70 miles-an-hour head-on collision. His injuries were absolutely horrific. He was basically kicked to death. “We done a couple of shows and got the money together and we pressed 500 singles, and then Small Wonder/Rough Trade re-released it, and it got to number one in the indie charts despite no radio play. Apart from John Peel, nobody else played it, and it was actually banned off any sort of play list in the northeast. Fair play I say.” The single is reissued as a limited edition of 500 on White vinyl, closely reproducing the first pressing from 1978.

Following hot on the heels of Ethbo's excursion to Russia, with Letov, Suchillin and Pillayev, Howard Williams' Ethbo swivels its telescope to Deptford, South London in 1978.

The band Alternative TV were, and remain, a radical creative force. Originally formed by Mark Perry (Mark P), and Alex Fergusson (later of Psychic TV) in the early days of punk, when Perry was editor of the pioneering punk fanzine, Sniffin' Glue.

Early rehearsals were held in Throbbing Gristle's Industrial Records studio, with Genesis P-Orridge on drums. After line-up changes, the 1978 release of Life After Life saw Dennis Burns on bass, Chris Bennett on drums, Kim Turner on guitar and Mark P. on vocals. The session was produced by prolific Trojan Records artist and producer Joe Sinclair, and released on the independent label Deptford Fun City Records.

The song presents a “conscious” lyric through an urban music form of its time. And here’s the result, more than 40 years on, the dub still rocks. Perry’s vocal, like no other from the punk era, talks of the afterlife, in a twisted nod to Nietzsche, he chants “Wake Me Up When We Are Dead”.

A Venn diagram of Mark P and Mark E Smith, leader of The Fall, would show some common ground. Both band leaders survived numerous member changes throughout the decades, had a baleful eye on the producers and consumers of their music, and expressed themselves through a poetic, existential form of lyric writing and musical experimentation. In the early days Smith cited Alternative TV in a list of favourite music - alongside Johnny Cash.

Remastered with love, pressed at RAND, with sleeve and label artwork re-jigged by Will Bankhead, there's no better way to skank yourself to Armageddon.

When The Steves' two extremely limited (maybe 100-200 of each?) EPs were released back in 1980 and '81 respectively, the squares around Harvard's newsroom were aghast at the audacity of this group. Having the stones to release such crudely-rhythmic, near mechanical and downright terse tunes in the day's often long winded prog rockin' ballad heavy radio reality that were too robotic to be “punk” and too unruly to be anything but was, to say the least, a bold move. Sure to cause an uproar in the halls, protests in the classroom and uninvited dancing in the streets! In the annals of New England's rock journalism, there is not a mountain of coverage on The Steves, certainly not as much as the Alan Parsons Project or Aerosmith, but the fact remains that they were a fully charged powder keg of raw energy and new musical direction that seemed to elude most of the world back then. Not to say they didn't get any light shone on them, they did get a fair amount of airplay on the college stations around Boston and even appeared on the cover of Boston Rock magazine. It is Iron Lung Records' distinct pleasure to offer the modern world a new chance to discover the ever vital and effervescent music of The Steves' initial EPs along with a third EP of songs never released on vinyl until now that were recorded at the time or shortly after the initial sessions. A true synth-punk/KBD treasure. Obscurity is for suckers. Let's get shakin'! 700 copies of each EP on black 70gr vinyl housed in a 12pt reverse board glue pocket sleeve with faithful reproductions of the original art. Originally produced by V. The Monochrome Set were something of the unsung heroes of the post-punk world; they fitted into absolutely no category whatsoever and their puckish take on spaghetti western soundtracks meets lounge jazz via the twisted lyrical imagery of vocalist Bid was as singular as it was unique. Comprising a couple of ex-Ants in Andy Warren and Lester Square, with singer / guitarist Bid and drummer JD Haney, their filmic, playful material found favour with many, including John Peel although they failed to match this with commercial success. The Jet Set Junta was originally released on Cherry Red in 1983 with its urgent, ringing guitars surrounding Bid’s lyrics telling of dodgy arms dealings and armoured limos as Lester Square’s Ennio Morriconetwang bends and reverbs as a counterpoint.

Limited to 750 copies. Pressed on Red Vinyl. Includes postcard and poster. Article 58, named after the Soviet classification for counter-revolutionaries, were formed in Scotland by Gerri McLaughlin (vocals), Douglas MacIntyre (guitars) and Ewan MacLennan (bass), with Stephen Lironi (drums) on these recordings. The group existed for a short period of time, burning brightly before burning out. A single, ‘Event To Come’, was produced by Postcard Records’ Alan Horne and Malcolm Ross and released on Josef K manager Allan Campbell’s Rational label. Article 58 were the opening group on many bills in Scotland, including support slots circa 1981 with A Certain Ratio, Scars, Josef K, Delmontes, Bauhaus, Restricted Code, among others. Josef K invited Article 58 to support them on some dates in England to promote their only album, ’The Only Fun In Town’, after which Article 58 recorded tracks for an as-yet unreleased album. One track, ‘Reflection’, did surface on a cassette/ zine product (‘Irrational’) released by Rational Records. However the teenage tension and strain of all that accompanies being in a group proved too much and Article 58 split up at the end of 1981. ‘Event To Come’ was to be the only single released by Article 58. The B side, ‘Icon’, is a previously unreleased recording. Both tracks are presented in a brand new sleeve designed by The Creeping Bent Organisation for release on the Optic Nerve label.

It originally referred to a specific place: West 28th Street between Fifth and Sixth Avenues in the Flower District of Manhattan. Haruomi Hosono (Apryl Fool, Happy End, Ymo), Masataka Matsutoya (music producer, arranger, keyboard player and composer married to popstar Yumi Arai), Shigeru Suzuki (also guitarist in Happy End) and drummer Tatsuo Hayashi (later on in fusion prog-bands such as Aragon and Parachute) took the name for granted. Their 1975 self-titled debut is stil one of the most sophisticated venture in the so called city pop scene.

Formed in Huntingdon, Cambridgeshire after drummer Simon Scott met Guitarist Graham Garduilo in local band The Giant Polar Bears.

They were tour buddies to Ride and most of the late 1980s shoegaze bands. Simon Scott was stolen by Slowdive after a gig at the White Horse in Hampstead in 1990, where the Boo Radleys opened the three-band bill.

A Simple Solution to a Complex Problem' was recorded by Jack Endino in ’87 and released only as a cassette. The tape caught some attention in the underground, and connected Subvert with bands like Poison Idea, Final Conflict, THE Accused, Christ ON Parade, and eventually made their way into PUSHEAD’s top 100 of the 80’s. This 7” is the new remastered version of the Demo Tape and includes an additional Instrumental song “Noxious Tune” from the same session, which has never been released on vinyl until now. The cover is a reworked version of an early Subvert logo with original art by Neko Case.

Pressed in an ultra limited number of 200 back in 1980. Ervin Berlin was the work of Ervin Shuemake (a late 20s acid rocker) and two young punks named Jeff and TOM THE Bomb. Ervin had cut his teeth playing guitar on the crazy Terry Brooks "strange" Translucent World LP back in 1973 and spent the remainder of the 70s in various acid, hard, and prog rock bands throughout Central Florida. He met the younger punk duo of Jeff and "The Bomb" at end of 79 beginning of 80 and decided to take a stab at the punk craze with his two new acquaintances. Soon the trio was at a country and western studio in Winter Haven recording the Ervin Berlin single between sessions for possible Bellamy Brothers tracks. The blending of Ervin's acid rock chops and Jeff and Tom's thuggish punk approach resulted in this KBD space punk stomper. Equal parts Blue Cheer, Debris, Sacramento's Ozzie, and late 70s Hawkind. The 7" was pressed, a few house parties were played, and all parties went separate ways. 42 years later we are kicking off Total Punk Archives with a reissue of this lost Orlando classic. 100% Total Punk!!

Over two years in the making, and it’s finally here. Amsterdam based, brand new old-school label “Betonska” kicks off with this highly diverse release for the selector, collector, radio host and club DJ. Crisp instrumentation, tight retro drum computer programming and propulsive danceable bass lines are what you will find here. The Amsterdam based label will be focusing on previously unreleased and tough-to-find material from the 80s and 90s – all re-mastered, officially licensed and in collaboration with the original artist. In addition to the original material an occasional modern twist will be given by contemporary artists who cherish that signature sound. The first release is an alternative issue of Flo Sullivan’s “Higher” release, originally recorded in 1984 in the world famous Amazon Studios in Liverpool and released in 1985. On the A-side both the 12” and the 7” version of the hard-to-get, firm synth-pop track “Higher” will be pressed on a loud 45rpm vinyl. The 12” version is the (bass-)heavier one, while the 7” version sounds more “organic” with an extended intro and an added horns part. The tracks on the A-side have been pressed before and are made available now again for the wider public, giving those tracks the recognition and attention they deserve. The B-side focuses on previously unreleased original downtempo material by the same artist but released under her real name: Gayna Rose Madder. This, accompanied by a refreshing club-ready remix of one of those tracks by Vienna’s top-notch selector, producer and Neubau label owner: Heap. Neither of the two original tracks “Over” and “Element” have ever been released on vinyl before, up until now. “Over” was written and recorded in 1983 in Splash Sound Studios in Liverpool. A beautiful melancholic synth-pop track, which was meant to be released, but unfortunately never saw the light of day. At the time it was recorded Gayna left her band “Shiny Two Shiny” and therefore needed a new deal from a different company for her solo releases. But by the time she found the right one, many newer songs needed release. Much later, in 2005, Gayna decided to self-release “Over” on a compilation CD to sell copies online. “Element” is a spoken-word poem accompanied by a fire-crackling tribal kind of rhythm. It was written for a musical play and recorded in Sparks Studio Liverpool in 2004 and has never officially been released before. (For a short period it was available on a self-released CD on Gayna’s website; a compilation of the songs written for one of her musicals). And last but not least, the icing on the cake is Heap’s remix of “Element”. He translated this spoken word poem into a refreshing 90s-style and danceable club-track to complete the diversity of Betonska’s first release. A chugging acid bass, breakbeat rhythms, crisp claps and sharp snares and a screeching lead synth to get you screaming on the dance floor.

Disco Segreta teams up again with Miro (b. Mario Baldoni) in the re-release of his 1970s-80s productions, after the italo-disco burner Stranamore by Brina (DS M 002) and the tropifrutti balearic italo-house smasher Tobago by Pat & Pats (DS M 006), we are back introducing to italo-disco connoisseurs a truly atomic jam ! “Passion Night” was originally written by Miro in 1985. Story goes that envisioning a release by 1987, Miro teamed up with legendary south-african sound engineer Allan Goldberg, in light of their previous Vedette Records disco-infused collaboration for the “Slang“ studio project and the “Real Life Games” LP. The team featured also track co-writer Gregorio Puccio, ready to unleash the synths (Roland Jd800 + D50, Yamaha DX7, Oberheim 12, Prophet 5), along with two young vocalists, Giulia Fasolino and Silver Pozzoli, later to become household names for the italo-disco heads. As a special feature on the track, Miro brought in the studio contribution of the top italian jazz contralto saxophone virtuoso of the era, Massimo Urbani. In September 1987 a session at Pomodoro Studio had the track recorded on a 24 tracks tape, where has been sitting unreleased for 35 years, until now ! Within its cross-genre blend of synth-pop, italo-disco and jazz, “Passion Night” is an outstanding musical time capsule, a picture-perfect vivid snapshot of year 1987, with the additional historical value as a document itself: it’s the only strictly non-jazz project in Massimo Urbani’s repertoire, in a revelatory performance shedding a light over an unusual facet of Urbani’s versatile talent, regardless of boundaries, a few years before his untimely passing.

The roots of hard rock act Tucky Buzzard lie in psychedelic group, The End, who supported The Rolling Stones on an early tour, leading Bill Wyman to produce their sole LP. All & Nothing has become one of the icons of Spanish underground rock of the 70s and their records are among the most sought-after pieces by collectors. With a short discography consisting of just two singles - one of them was even released in Argentina with an alternative cover- the band All & Nothing has become one of the icons of Spanish underground rock of the 70s and their records are among the most sought-after pieces by collectors. The group was really nothing more than a studio project, put together by journalist and record producer José Luis Alvarez, who never performed in public. Their goal was to record songs in the same style that the emerging Andalusian rock scene was already doing in the south of Spain under the influence of the latest international rock trends -imported through the US military bases- and the local musical idiosyncrasy. Although most of the recorded songs - some of whom remained unreleased for years- succeeded in reflecting the original goal, for this first single of All & Nothing their producer instructed the band to record something similar to Iron Butterfly's classic 'In-a-gadda-da-vida', and 'Underground Vibrations nº 2' seems to be a very accomplished effort. The record has become a very sought-after item for those collecting the lesser-known side of 70s Spanish underground rock. The stunning rhythm section on both sides of the single plus the overwhelming organ solos and firing wah-wah and fuzz guitars explain the high interest on this elusive 45, a must in the top DJs record boxes. We are happy to reissue this amazing All & Nothing debut 7" for the first time, remastered from the original tapes and featuring the 1970 sleeve artwork.

“Manmade” is the sixth and last album from the legendary Norwegian prog/jazz rock band Ruphus, originally released in 1979. A worthy end to a career of a band who made an everlasting catalogue of exciting music. After the previous album (“Flying Colours” in 1978), Ruphus lost three of the five band members. One of them was Thor Bendiksen (drums), who had been in the band from the start. It seemed impossible to replace one of the founding members, but Bjørn Jenssen filled the vacant drum stool like a charm. On keyboards, Kjell Rønningen replaced Jan Simonsen, and on vocals Gudny Aspaas returned for a third period in the band. With Gudny back in the band and new forces on keys and drums, they ventured to England to record a new album with Steven O’Donnell and Colin H. Jennings as producers. The result was a bona fide classic, and this new version of Ruphus did an extensive tour of Europe in support of it. “Manmade” is the sixth and last album in a series of Ruphus re-issues from Karisma Records, remastered by Jacob Holm-Lupo (White Willow, The Opium Cartel, etc).

Lesser-known punk band Cyanide formed in the northern cathedral city of York in 1976, the four lads based at the Old Priory Youth Club. After cutting a couple of demos soon after their formation, in time the band’s reputation was such that they were playing the Roxy in London and during their rapid ascent, the quartet managed to score a contract with major label Pye for their self-titled debut album, recorded in December 1976 and produced by Ron O’Shea, who ironically got his start with orchestral easy listening. A fun set of tongue-in-cheek first-wave punk originals, the album also includes a spirited cover version of The Who’s ‘I’m A Boy.’

Originally released in 1989, it is the first time that the album has been reissued on vinyl and we do it in a wonderful remastered edition that also includes two bonus tracks - the two songs that came out on compilation cassette No. 92, also released in 1989 by El Lokal. -. In the words of Boliche himself, drummer and leader of the band, the recording of the album was a real nightmare due to the state of the recording studio, but none of that can be seen in the final result: it is his most complete work and the one that shows a more interesting and varied palette of what hardcore punk can be.
