A year after the cassette-only release of Switched On Ra, another format has fallen from whatever kind of rare ether Bitchin Bajas occupy when they"re at home. The LP edition of Switched On Ra bears all the same riches (only richer of course) in its grooves, adding a lovely screen-printed rendering of the graphics to its larger-than-cassette-cosmos dimensions.Switched On Ra is the outcome of a typical Bajas exercise: pouring some out for the pioneers that came before (as they"ve done with Bitchitronics and their participation in the annual Chicago performance of "In C" over the years). It"s a nice way to get a flow - they play a little of themselves, then some for the pioneers, then a little more for the band. Before long, they"re playing with the inspirations twined, as they can only come from within.For Switched On Ra, this meant a deep delve into the song-book of one of their soul-predecessors, Sun Ra, whose music is literally written in the Bajas DNA. Digging into this music sounded wild on paper: the drone synth group taking on the Arkestra harmonies and Ra"s loose grooves? The trick was to get that sense of rhythm to translate across the spectrum from Ra to Bajas, in a way that worked for them both.Their rearrangements of the tunes went good - up and down the EQ band, they were finding the round sounds and jagged edges that brought Ra"s music into their own thing. Then at the last minute, there was another twist - why not pay tribute to the Queen herself, and think of the arrangements with a Wendy Carlos vibe? A little side homage? After all, Switched on Bach was visionary, bringing analog synths from the outside all the way into the mainstream in the late 60s - and this take on Ra is meant to take him to new ears everywhere.Sun Ra of course was his own kind of original keyboard visionary, using electric keyboards in the late 40s and 50s to fill a role in jazz that had traditionally been played on acoustic piano only. Fully remastered and licensed, ltd to 500 copies on clear vinyl Kevin Hewick - a Leicester born – is still considered a truly representative force of the post-punk counterculture. His first ‘proper’ gig was on a bill with Joy Division, A Certain Ratio and Section 25. He released a couple of records on Factory in the early 80's, then moving to Cherry Red in 1982. His collaboration with The Sound stands truly as his own masterwork. Recorded and mixed at Elephant Studios, Wapping, London on November 3rd, 4th & 5th 1983, is still a refreshing example of their combined effort. The four tracks Ep move along a sort of outsider folkish post punk being perhaps his most accessible work ever.

"The whole point of this record was to share every emotion that I feel," says The Soft Moon's Luis Vasquez. "No two songs are the same. It's about existing in the world as a human being and experiencing many emotions and experiences throughout life." And so hence the title Exister, a record rooted in the ecstatic joys and crippling lows that life can throw up and how just hanging on and existing is sometimes all we have. "Exister is my way of saying `I'm here, deal with it.'" Vasquez says. Sonically, this expression is a vast, expansive and potent one. The opening `Sad Song', which unfurls with a dense brooding atmosphere, Vasquez describes as almost a ballad, while tracks such as `The Pit' capture the opposite end of the musical spectrum, exploding as a thundering piece of industrial techno complete with gut-churning levels of bass. `Monster' - a song that follows a human metamorphosis into an unrecognizable and destructive being - seamlessly combines a deeply melodic, almost electro pop, vocal hook with a slow build atmospherics to create something equally beautiful and unsettling. `Become the Lies' explores the devastating consequences of being lied to by your own family and is a post-punk stomper, merging charging basslines, pummelling drums and snaking guitars, all of which combine explosively. Elsewhere the album runs the gauntlet of everything from ambient to dark wave - features ferocious guest contributions from fish narc and Special Interest's Alli Logot on `Him' and `Unforgiven' - all while retaining that distinct tone that unmistakably The Soft Moon.

Grave Digger are one of the most enduring and respected bands devoted to classic and true HM, with a long discography spanning over 35 years. The beginnings of Grave Digger date back to 1980. In 1983, they released their debut album "Heavy Metal Breakdown", followed by their second album "Witch Hunter" in 1985. Festival appearances, a tour as the supporting act for Helloween, and a triple headlining tour with Celtic Frost and Helloween followed before the release of the third album "War Games" in January 1986, all on Noise Records. Then Uwe Lulis on guitar joined in 1987 and the band's name was changed to Digger, under which they released the album "Stronger Than Ever". This album had anything in common with the earlier music of Grave Digger, and it was not accepted by fans. As a result, Chris Boltendahl declared the break-up of the band at the end of 1987. However, the band partially reformed in 1991. Chris Boltendahl and Uwe Lulis, along with two newcomers, Tomi Göttlich and Jörg Michael (Rage, later in Running Wild, Stratovarius), released a comeback record, "The Reaper", returning to the true Heavy Metal roots of Grave Digger. "Symphony Of Death" was released in 1994, with the same line-up as "The Reaper". Then there's "Heart of Darkness" (1995), "Tunes of War" (1996), "Knights of the Cross" (1998), and "Excalibur" (1999), all with the same powerful lineup except for the drummers, Frank Ullrich first and then Stefan Arnold (Capricorn). In 2001, Uwe Lulis left the band and was replaced by Manni Schmidt (Rage); with this line-up they recorded the obscure "Grave Digger" (2001), the epic "Rheingold" (2003), then "Last Supper" (2005) and "Liberty or Death" (2006), both albums not completely appreciated by fans. "Ballads of a Hangman" (2009) is maybe their best with Manni on axe, and it’s also the last, before he is replaced by Axel Ritt.

The year 2019 marked significant changes for Baltimore psychedelic-doom trio, Black Lung. Following the release of their third album, Ancients, guitarist and founding member Adam Bufano amiably departed the band and in November 2019, was replaced by guitarist Dave Fullerton. Just four months later, the reconfigured trio’s plans for touring in support of Ancients were canceled as the world entered Covid-19 lockdown. It was time to reconcile their touring ambition with the reality that live music was effectively shut down indefinitely. In the existential dread, loss and uncertainty of the global pandemic, with the backdrop of malignant fascism and cultural enmity in the USA, Black Lung began writing the songs that would comprise their next record. There is no question that Dark Waves, Black Lung’s newest release via Heavy Psych Sounds Records, was conceived in hostile times. Dave Cavaliers lyrics reflect this hostility. Songs like ‘The Cog’ and ‘Mad King’ lament the weaponized ignorance of the propagandized American citizen, while ‘Awaken’ and ‘The Path’ muse on escapism and the false protection of dreams. On the title track, ‘Dark Waves’, the band channels this mood of bitterness through their instruments, as a meditative bridge is slowly transformed into a foreboding storm front centered around Dave Fullerton’s hypnotic guitar melodies. Despite the apparent darkness, Dark Waves is not a cold or desolate sounding record. The band leaps forward from their previous releases with warmer, brighter sound crafting and more audacious songwriting. There are passages with a tangible sense of jubilation and excitement, as the band members revel in the recording process after more than a year of uncertainty and frustration. While in some ways Dark Waves offers a departure from prior Black Lung records, the band stays true to their roots in doom and psychedelic music, delivering eight songs packed with the frenzied, fuzzed-out guitar breakdowns, booming drums, and soulful vocals that longtime fans will appreciate. The decision to bring bass guitar prominently into the mix on Dark Waves adds new levels of depth and heaviness to Black Lung’s songs, which may be the album’s most notable and exciting development. Underpinning everything about Dark Waves is the band's decision to shed conventions and their ability to adapt to change. For Black Lung, making it through these dark times meant reflecting on the past while pushing forward without knowing what the future may hold. The result is a record that sees Black Lung rising to new sonic heights. Dark Waves is set for global release through Heavy Psych Sounds Records May 27th, 2022.

Here’s a definitive compilation of their first period career, Glaxo Babies was one of the most exciting british post-punk band of the era. Raised in Bristol – altogether with such local influential acts like Maximum Joy, The Transmitters and obviously The Pop Group – Glaxo Babies formed in late 1977. The band signed to local label Heartbeat Records (marketed by Cherry Red), with their first release being the This Is Your Life EP in February 1979; in the same year they released the single “Christine Keeler” . This led to them recording their first session for BBC radio’s John Peel the following April, and the track “It’s Irrational”, from this session, opened the seminal 1979 Bristol Compilation album “Avon Calling”. Their aggro mix of in your face lyrics and groovy bassline led to a unique formula, with both their feet in the post-punk scene and the uprising black jazz crossover. The so-called white funk was the plat du jour, even if the band soon achieved a straight and original personality. Fully remastered and licensed, ltd to 500 copies.

Songs spin off and lurch into unexpected directions throughout here, be it March Day's escalating aural panic attack or the shapeshifting darkness of Snow Day. There's a Berlin era Bowie beauty to the lovelorn Human For A Minute while closer Station Wagon weaves from a downbeat mooch into a souring, soullifting climax in which Steen elevates himself beyond the clouds and into the heavens. Or at least that's what it sounds like. From the womb to the clouds (sort of), Shame are currently very much in the pink.

Life behind the Berlin Wall, before the fall. Once there was DDR (Deutsche Demokratische Republik), otherwise known as East Germany. Verging on the ruins of the 2nd world war, in the fog of the socialist utopia, there was a widespread scene fighting against corporations and restrictions. Die neuen Bands, that was the manifesto, a number of small alternative bands facing the efforts of the post-punk (and even post-industrial) revolution. This was happening right after the English new wave or the Neue Deutsche Welle (the western counterpart). A musical resistance, a counterculture, spreading all over the country the clandestine way. An enduring dangerous strategy that brought to life many artistic figures, way ahead of their time. Such is the case of Frank Bretschneider (Stein im Brett, Kriminelle Tanzkapelle) still one oft he most prolific glitch producer (founder of the influential imprint Rastermusic), Ornament & Verbrechen the east-Berlin combo ran by brothers Ronald e Robert Lippok (To Rococo Rot) and Reinhard Lakomy a true innovator in the vein of Klaus Schulze. The ghost of an era, a social turmoil that eventually had an impact on our daily routine.

Six Organs of Admittance is back after 3 years with a new record, new techniques in sound generation, and a new attitude. Companion Rises has a driving force only hinted at with previous releases. Manipulating the rhythmic DNA from songs such as the bass-dominated "Taken by Ascent" (on his last record, Burning the Threshold), Ben Chasny has grown a new sound creature in his lab that is as welcoming as it is terrifying and as fun to listen to as it provocative and intriguing.
Methodologically, Companion Rises sometimes recalls the early-mid low-fi work of Six Organs, with modern techniques swapping digital processes in for the analog ways of the early days, and algorithmic programs creating the rhythms rather than Ben's overdubbed hand percussion.
Sonically, Ben's songs are bursting with ideas, harmonically rich, gorgeously arranged; often presenting two versions at once, overlaying electric and acoustic treatments that interlock like two shards that form a single key.
Companion Rises plays like a mutant joining of avant and good-time forces, as if Faust produced The Revolution instead of Prince, or This Heat recorded on top of Amon DüüI's classic "Paramechanical World," but left a few of the original tracks to bleed through.
With Companion Rises, Ben has created a Sci-Folk record that feels totally in the right place welcoming in the new decade.

A disorientating journey through Kevin Starrs (AKA Uncle Acid)’ wonkiest dreams, Wasteland glides majestically from punchy and direct psych-rock anthems like "I See Through You" and "Shockwave City" to the viscous, somnambulant ooze of the eight-minute "No Return" and the twinkly-eyed bad trip of the album’s mesmerising title track. Recorded at the legendary Sunset Sound studio in Los Angeles, Wasteland boasts the kind on irresistibly raw and exuberant sound that only the greatest bands can generate. Yet more confirmation that Uncle Acid exist in their own musical universe, Wasteland is also a powerful cautionary tale: one rooted in the alien landscapes of Starrs’ imagination, but with a very clear connection to the deranged chaos of today’s political world. As humanity cheerfully circles the plughole, Dystopian visions and present-day horrors have become more-or-less interchangeable, making Wasteland’s ghoulish surrealism a lot more pertinent and disturbing in the process. While most musicians seem content to chase their own (or other people’s tails), Uncle Acid & The Deadbeats remain proud and resolute individualists and Wasteland is simply their most powerful and memorable spurge of creativity to date. Masterfully echoing the magical atmospheres of heavy music’s turbulent past while sounding entirely unlike anything else available to human ears, this is what happens when the shadows come to life and suffocating darkness, Uncle Acid & The Deadbeats style, is the only show in town.
