By now listeners are probably familiar with Riding Easy’s wildly popular Brown Acid series of rare, lost and unreleased proto-metal and stoner rock singles from the ’60s-’70s. In the endless pursuit of those glorious gems, the label often uncovers equally brilliant rarities from the late-’70s to late-’80s Golden Age of Heavy Metal that also just must be heard, but they don’t fit the series’ aesthetic. Scrap Metal Volume 1 collects some of the greatest unknown and lost heavy metal tracks, long buried beneath the avalanche of the era’s classic output. Everyone knows the old adage that history is told by the winners. But sometimes the losers tell the best stories. And while none of these bands found fame and fortune, this artifact and the volumes to come are testament to the enduring power of heavy music. One can hear the blood, sweat and beers that went into each of these singles. The recordings may be low budget, but the inspiration and talent is immutable. Not only are the amps turned up to 11, the boyish sexual innuendo is cranked to 69. One can hear the convergence of influences—NWOBHM, thrash, glam metal, doom, etc—colliding at once as the era birthed a wellspring of subgenres. Many of these singles are self-released and were thus limited to a small run of copies. Those that remain are hoarded by collectors and sold for exorbitant amounts. Riding Easy has collected the best of the best for the listener here. As with Brown Acid, all of these tracks are licensed legitimately and the artists all get paid. Because it’s the right thing to do.

The lauded krautrocking, global groove ensemble’s first album On maverick producer Madlib’s label. The late Christian Burchard, who founded the Embryo ensemble in 1969, loved the slogan Auf Auf, German for Up, Up, or Keep On Going. Anyone with anything more than a passing interest in the German Krautock scene of the 1970s and 1980s knows that Burchard followed that intent, all around the world, tirelessly seeking out new sounds and inspirations and creating a catalog of music unlike most anything else the world has ever heard. Madlib has often said Embryo is his favorite rock band. Of course the hip-hop-producer-with-the-deepest-musical-knowledge knows Embryo is more than just a rock band – but, for the purposes of these notes, let’s keep it simple. When Marja Burchard, Christan’s daughter, who grew up with Embryo and toured with them for years, took the reins of the ensemble after Christian’s death in 2018, she started recording what would become this album, over the course of two years, finishing it in the throes of the Covid pandemic in 2020. She approached Madlib and Egon, who had, years back, visited and jammed with Christian Burchard, and Embryo musicians Uve Mullrich, Roman Bunka and Jan Weissenfeldt, in a Bavarian wine cellar, with the idea to issue Auf Auf on Madlib Invazion. The reply was a resounding, definitive “yes.” So here is Marja’s take on the Embryo ethos, continuing with her father’s intrepid style, and leading the band in her own style. Auf Auf ranges from the deep, free-form jazz of “Alphorn Prayer” to modal music from Afghanistan on “Baran” to psychedelic-tinged jazz-rock of the title track Joining Marja are those like Embryo veterans Bunka, on oud and guitar, and Karl Hector and the Malcouns/Whitefield Brothers/Poets of Rhythm producer and guitarist Jan Weissenfeldt and others, including important players on the global scene from Afghanistan and Morocco.

Neben dem Originalalbum enthält die limitierte Neuausgabe fünf bis dato unveröffentlichte Aufnahmen aus der AIR Studios Session. Eingespielt wurden die Songs gemeinsam von Justin Vernon und Sean Carey als Duo mit Klavier und Gesang.

Das ikonische Artwork der LP und CD wurde gänzlich neu gestaltet. Statt dem ursprünglichen Aquarell des Originals ziert bei der Anniversary-Edition nun eine Blindprägung auf weißen Grund das Cover. Dazu gibt es noch ein persönliches Essay von Phoebe Bridgers über ihre Liebe zu diesem Album und wie es sie als Künstlerin geprägt hat.

Begleitend zum Release spielen Bon Iver im Oktober zwei Shows im neu eröffneten YouTube-Theater in Inglewood in Kalifornien. Es sind Bon Ivers erste Shows seit Beginn der Pandemie und stellen das zweite Album und seine Produktion in den Fokus.

A whirlwind brought DIIV here. On the heels of 2012's Oshin, the group delivered the critical and fan favorite Is the Is Are in 2016. Praise came from The Guardian, Spin, Rolling Stone and more. Pitchfork's audience voted Is the Is Are one of the Top 50 Albums of 2016, as the outlet dubbed it "gorgeous." Simultaneously, frontman Zachary Cole Smith faced down seemingly dormant demons, and the momentum stalled. Two years after embarking on a program of recovery, Smith has emerged with a clear head and renewed focus. For the first time, DIIV lived with songs on the road. "Being a recovering addict myself," he says, "there are a lot of questions like, `Who are we? What is this disease?' `Skin Game' looks at where the pain comes from - the personal, physical, emotional, and broader political experiences feeding into the cycle of addiction for millions of us." A trudging groove and wailing guitar punctuate a lulling apology on the magnetically melancholic "Taker." For Smith, it's "about taking responsibility for your lies, their consequences, and the entire experience." Meanwhile, the ominous bass line and crawling beat of "Blankenship" devolve into schizophrenic string bends with the vitriolic lyrics. The seven-minute "Acheron" offers a dynamic denouement, flowing through a hulking beat guided under gusts of lyrical fretwork and a distorted heavy apotheosis. "We're proud of this, because we earned it as a band," Cole says. "I'm really happy and grateful just to do it in the first place. I can see the change. It's not a record full of solutions, but I'm living my life. I've examined the consequences of my lies; I've got something to say now."

Powerflo is a rap metal band formed in 2017, consisting of Cypress Hill rapper Sen Dog, guitarists Billy Graziadei (Biohazard) and Roy Lozano (ex-downset.), bassist Christian Olde Wolbers (ex-Fear Factory) and Worst drummer Fernando Schaefer.

The band's history can be traced back to the 1990's, where the band members would often collaborate - such as Cypress Hill and Biohazard performing on the famous Judgment Night soundtrack, or Wolbers and Lozano appearing in Cypress Hill albums Skull & Bones and Stoned Raiders. In 2015, Lozano played some demos to Sen Dog on a ride to the airport, setting the foundations for Powerflo.

The name of the band comes from a comment Roy Lozano made about Sen Dog's vocal tracking for the upcoming album. Describing their sound as a "cross between Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath and Cypress Hill", they first unveiled the group on March 1, 2017 while recording their self-titled debut album. On May 2 2017, they released the first single "Resistance" via Metal Injection. In launching the first single, Sen Dog indicated that this is a long term project and that future Powerflo albums will be released after their self-titled is released.

Months before Lynyrd Skynyrd enjoyed the privilege of recording its debut, the band entered its seventh year of playing juke joints and assorted dives in a bootstraps effort to land a deal. During a residency at a hardscrabble Georgian club, the group's rambunctious rock, swaggering attitude, blue-collar determination, and country-reared cadence caught the ear of producer/musician Al Kooper. Formed in 2015, Vanishing Twin came together to make an exploratory record that marries oblique English pop with a palette of arkestral sounds. Having previously released a string of conceptual cassettes under the name Orlando, founder Cathy Lucas named the group after her vanishing twin, an identical sister absorbed in utero, when they were both still a cluster of cells.

Enlisting the help of producer Malcolm Catto (Heliocentrics, DJ Shadow, The Gaslamp Killer) the band began work at his London studio, Quatermass Sound Lab, last spring. Recording the basis for eight tracks, they blended structure and improvisation in pop songs that describe a personal mythology through the adventures of Lucas’ vanished twin. Drawing on sounds outside of the usual pop vocabulary, the group used forgotten drum machines, home-made electronics, vibraphones, tablas, and harp to invoke the esoteric psychedelia of lost soundtracks, radiophonic experiments and minimal music orchestras. In a studio that Catto built for maximum atmosphere and minimum interfere, and crammed with obscure vintage equipment, he brought his own distinctive sonics to the table, informed by outsider jazz, Italian library music and ethnographic field recordings.

The band has previously been championed by the likes of Gilles Peterson and the Quietus. They played widely in 2015 presenting an immersive show that is equal parts crafted sound and improvised delirium. Vanishing Twin is made up of singer Cathy Lucas (Innerspace Orchestra), drummer Valentina Magaletti (Raime, Tomaga, Uuuu, Neon Neon), bassist Susumu Mukai (Zongamin, Floating Points), library music head Phil M.F.U. (Man From Uranus, Broadcast) on strange sounds, and film maker and visual artist Elliott Arndt on flute and percussion.

An 18-year-old Elvis Presley walked through the doors of the Memphis Recording Service at 708 Union Ave. in the summer of 1953. He carried a beat-up guitar that he'd had since the age of 11 and enough money to make a $3.98 record of his own voice.

He sang two '30s ballads -- ''My Happiness'' and ''That's When Your Heartaches Begin'' -- hoping to catch the attention of Sam Phillips, who had started his own label, Sun. When he was done, Marion Keisker, who helped run the place with Phillips, typed his name on the back of a label for Sun act The Prisonaires, and Presley left with his acetate.

For more than six decades, that record of Elvis singing ''My Happiness'' was kept by the family of the high-school friend Presley left it with, Ed Leek. As part of an auction at Graceland on Jan. 8 (2015) -- which would have been Presley's 80th birthday -- it was valued at approximately $100,000. It sold to an unknown Internet bidder for $300,000.

That bidder was Jack White.

When Sunn O))) first approached Scott Walker about appearing on their 2009 album Monoliths & Dimensions, little did they know what it would actually lead to. Four years on, Scott was back with something even more enticing, collaborating on Soused, a body of work he was writing with them in mind.

With a career spanning more than five decades, Scott Walker’s cult status remains as significant as ever before. Experiencing mega-stardom as part of The Walker Brothers before carving out a career as a solo crooner who released a quartet of peerless self-titled LPs that painted rich vignettes of life in the late 60s, Scott went through what felt like a massive U-turn by recording a collection of masterfully challenging albums: Climate Of Hunter (1984), Tilt (1996), The Drift (2006) and Bish Bosch (2013). While there’s some truth to this artistic arc, the actual picture is a lot more complex, with his knack for introducing the disturbingly counter-intuitive and the uncanny into his songwriting dating back to the likes of 'The Plague' (1967) and ‘It’s Raining Today’ (1969).

Centred around the core duo of Stephen O’Malley and Greg Anderson, Sunn O))) have been at the heart of underground and experimental metal since they began in Los Angeles back in 1998, broadening in range to increasingly encompass avant-garde and jazz dynamics to their dark music. Anderson runs Southern Lord (Sunn O)))’s usual label home), whilst O’Malley is involved in a remarkable web of projects as a musician, designer, and label head of Ideologic Organ. They appear alongside extended Sunn O))) member Tos Nieuwenhuizen on this recording.
