What Kind of Human Have I Become is a new vehicle helmed by Matt Plunkett (Cuticles, The Trendees, etc.). Conceived as a solo endeavor, the designation got a bit blurry following an invitation to record his new songs with Stefan Neville (Pumice, etc.) at the studio he shares with Ben Holmes (Oksun Ox, etc.) in Auckland.

Once in the studio, Plunkett’s songs puffed in a wholly new way with Neville at the controls, and backing and bits from both Neville and Holmes perhaps channeling Nag and Bendie. Fans of Matt’s past and current activities will find much to rejoice in here; Avoiding The Diggy Diggy Dogs plucks three songs from the sessions. More to come in due time.

Ignis Fatuus is the classic debut album from Norwegian prog legends White Willow. Originally released in the Spring of 1995, the album took the global progressive rock scene by storm. Fan letters started coming in from all over the world, and wonderful reviews from American and European music magazines kept flowing out of their fax machine. 5000 copies were quickly sold and soon the band was on a plane to California to perform at the 1995 Los Angeles Progfest, along with acts like Spock’s Beard, Ars Nova and Landberk. The songs on the album range from almost pure pastoral folk-rock, as on Snowfall and Till He Arrives, via out-and-out prog rock, as on John Dee’s Lament and Cryptomenysis (which featured a guest appearance from Ved Buens Ende’s Carl Michael Eide) to unusual experiments like the renaissance-inspired hymn Song, based on Christina Rossetti’s poem. The band didn’t at the time consider themselves a prog-rock band, more a folk-rock band that dabbled in symphonic arrangements. Nevertheless, the album has become a classic for prog connoisseurs. This re-release was meticulously remastered by the band’s own Jacob Holm-Lupo, and is presented with the classic original cover art, for the first time on vinyl. This is the first in a series of six White Willow re-releases on Karisma Records.

Sacrament is the classic third album from Norwegian prog legends White Willow, originally released in 2000. For this album, the band spent a long, long time working on the songs and arrangements, coming up with inventive, dynamic and beautiful arrangements for each song. After lengthy rehearsals at the Norwegian Institute for Scene and Studio, the band entered a new studio, called Lydkjøkkenet. The studio wasrun by the friendly and very talented engineer Øystein Vesaas, whose patience and mild manners were a perfect fit for the band, allowing time to experiment and try out different solutions. Sacrament was recorded over an extended period. Holm-Lupo was working a full-time day job at the time, so sessions would often be running from the evening into the night. But everyone was energized and had great faith in the music being made, and remember the recording as an enjoyable experience. The album was madeduring a period where certain elements of prog were beginning to drip into the mainstream, which also provided some moral motivation. And when the album was released, it was to unanimously glowing reviews and healthy sales – and even some mainstream recognition. This re-release was meticulously remastered by the band’s own Jacob Holm-Lupo and is presented with the classic original cover art, for the first time on vinyl. Kane – the short Initiation Dub and the epic Hero Remix, which comes in three parts, titled Departure, Initiation and Return and takes the song to some unexpected and exciting new places.“Whitelands came up in conversation three times in a week,” explains A.R. Kane’s Rudy Tambala of how he got to know the band and came to remix them. “Two times is coincidence, three times is a conspiracy, so I reached out to them on social media, and we started chatting. They’re cool, like baby Kanes. ‘Setting Sun’ was close to my heart, reminding me of ‘Fools Gold’ meets Slowdive versus Frank Ocean. Anyway, I heard several approaches in my head, so I thought, ‘Fuck it, let’s do ’em all’. “I knew I wanted to take a prog approach: Marvin Gaye’s What’s Going On, Pink Floyd’s The Dark Side Of The Moon, Sasha’s Involver2, Coltrane’s A Love Supreme, Frank Ocean’s Blond, etc. Even my own sixty nine. It’s that seamless drift from one part into the next, stretching the idea until it ruptures, creating space for a new way of perceiving; this has the first inklings of hive mind, telepathy, in a musical form; you dissolve into it as it dissolves into you. A fundamental dreampop construction and aim, whereby subject and object become one. Ahem. “As the extended mix took shape it suggested to me the three components of The Hero’s Journey, hence the titles. The three-minute pop song was determined by the technical limitations of the 7” vinyl single. Digital has obliterated that. The perfect dreampop song has no time limit. ‘Setting Sun’ A.R. Kane Hero Remix is timely.” Alongside Rudy’s reworkings is an equally dazzling drum’n’bass take on last year’s single ‘How It Feels’ by the band’s guitarist Michael in his howdogirlssleep guise. “Combining shoegaze and jungle was something I never thought of, but when I thought about remixing ‘How It Feels’ the song pretty much made itself,” he explains. “It’s such a sonically rich and emotionally capturing song already; the only thing I had to do was add drums that would enhance the track. I tried to create a feeling of transient energy in the song which the mix engineer, and my good friend, Reinaldo helped me to create. Following their acclaimed sophomore 2019 album Forever Turned Around, Whitney have decided to return with a loving tribute to songs that have been formative and lasting to the entire band. Candid is a 10-song collection boasting covers of artists like Kelela, David Byrne, John Denver, SWV, and others but it's also a band challenging themselves to explore more than their musical comfort zone. "This could've been as simple as saying we really love these songs and we love our bandmates and making a covers record just felt right but it truly became an exploration into how we can evolve as a band going forward," says drummer and singer Julien Ehrlich. Covers have long been an integral part of Whitney's ethos.
