Skingraft was a band from Rochester, New York who made jarring, technical, irregular death metal. Three teenagers who spent the frigid, upstate winters mastering arcane scales and double bass patterns, their elaborate, dynamic songs pair howls and blast beats with brooding, minor-key melodies and deviant rhythms. Picture the bludgeon of Entombed's "Left Hand Path," the shattered glass frequencies of Godflesh's "Streetcleaner," and the destabilization of "Remain Sedate" by Roschach. Skingraft recorded these two songs at Rochester's famed Dajhelon Studios during their junior year of high school. Released on the 30th anniversary of this recording session, this 7-inch is the first time these songs have been made publicly available. Guitarist MAT Colbert went on to play in Blurring, Kalibas and Humiliating Moan. Drummer Andy Meyering is a member of Further Damage. Limited edition of 300 copies on colored vinyl. Cover art is silkscreened onto handmade paper stock jackets made from pulped bibles. For every seven copies of Skingraft made, on bible was removed from this world. Includes an insert.

The '21 album by Sky Mata (Yūtai Bijin), a prodigious bedroom folk S.S.W. from Sapporo, is now on LP!

The latest work by the Sapporo-based home recording project Sky Mata is now available in analog form. Each side consists of seven or eight songs on this nostalgic, cinematic, and stunning lo-fi avant-pop suite.

Sky Mata has been releasing works since the mid-2010s, and their self-titled EP under the name Ghostly Beauty, which was released in analog form in 2021, has also made a big splash. It is now available in analog form. The album has a unique sound that combines the romanticism of folk music from half a century ago with an inorganic, futuristic world. The improvisational and flowing performance that intersects jazz, lounge music, and exotic, and the unique vocal style that spins pop melodies in a humorous way are also filled with a mysterious charm. If I had to name an artist of the same era, I would cite Sam Gendel as a great masterpiece.

Over the years Willy has written a few but so far they haven"t fit on any of the Delines album. The wrong place at the wrong time sorta thing. The Golden State leans on the bands cowpunk roots dating back to Richmond Fontaine (Portland) and The Damnations(Austin). Willy brought it in to the band right just as they were drifting away from that sound. My Blood Bleeds The Darkest Blue was inspired by those great Nancy Sinatra & Lee Hazelwood duets. It has a real desert feel to it but at the time the Delines were working on The Sea Drift which was set on the Gulf Coast. So both are songs that the band loved but songs that were left orphaned and they thought they better give them a proper home before they got lost along the way.

Blues Lawyer is back on Dark Entries with a new 7” EP of summery alt-pop. Fresh off the heels of their critically acclaimed Dark Entries debut, Sight Gags On The Radio expands the Blues Lawyer universe, one where lovelorn millennials struggle to find their place. The four songs were recorded one afternoon by Rob I. Miller, Blues Lawyer co-founder and chief songwriter, in the band’s Oakland rehearsal space. It was recorded just days before Elyse Schrock (singer, songwriter, drummer, and music video creator) would be leaving the Bay Area – her home for the past decade – due to the soaring cost of living. The first single, “Have Nots,” shows the band moving away from the rapid chord changes that characterized their earlier work towards hazy guitar textures. It is accompanied by a tender music video portrait of the band reuniting in Portland, where Schrock now resides. The video documents the band’s touring life: playing pizza parlors and billiard clubs, sleeping on floors, and killing time between gigs. These touching images are elevated by Schrock’s trademark animations and editing style. The second of November’s Feral Child releases is another absolute beauty. A beautiful comeback record of sorts for Marc Rigelsford’s Magic ARM project. The 45 is a taster for his own privately released, and utterly fabulous “Dance Mania” full length, currently available via his bandcamp page. Recorded in isolation in a former whiskey distillery, “Dance Mania” is “Magic Arm whittling and distilling sound down to pure forms, a collage of songs, mood pieces, drones, found sounds and stirring instrumental passages”. The two tracks here are lifted from the album, with its A side, the majestic “Good Views Near North” having already attained 6music airplay. The songs’ treated piano opening offers no hint to the beautifully incessant, kinda’ motorik groove that then takes over- wonderfully skewed and quite otherworldly perhaps. The groove then changes tack again as it closes with cellos and strings aiding further it’s general ‘out there’ mood. It’s a beautiful piece and by releasing it on 45, one would hope to push Marc’s music out a wee bit further, certainly it’s a thrill for Feral Child to release it and it’s flip, the more electronic, and equally fabulous “432” is just great too.

It’s exactly how on the nose you want it to be, right down to the distinctive sleeve design and the sneaky pop hit that closes the record. After the success of “A Day at the Beach” in the summer of 2020, Airbag really wanted to showcase the songs in a live setting. Alas, due to all the covid-19 restrictions, a normal tour or normal shows wasn’t a reality. Instead, the band went into Subsonic Society Studio in Oslo, where they recorded their last studio albums, to perform an acoustic set streamed in the early autumn of last year. As the band explains: 2020 has been a difficult year for us all. With our new album, "A Day at the Beach", out in June we had planned to tour and play live for all our fans and friends but it was not to be. Still, we wanted to do something special that would keep us connected to our fans and also to say thanks for everyone’s support in these trying times. Doing this acoustic session allowed us to revisit songs from the new album and a few old ones as well. A new challenge for sure but a fun and inspiring experience. In addition to acoustic versions of 3 songs from “A Day At The Beach” and the classics “Colours” and “Sounds That I Hear”, this release includes the previously unreleased song “Come on In”. This unlikely cover version of Madonna’s perennial pop favourite first came to the attention of Ghost Box records when Large Plants front man, Jack Sharp posted it on his social media channels as an April Fool’s gag. Plenty of followers were taken in by this perfectly crafted gem that sounds uncannily like it must have always existed and predated the original.

It’s a super heavy, scuzzed up, psych sound, at the same time shot through with Mediterranean sunlight. It’s by no means a parody though; rather a respectful interpretation of a perfectly formed pop masterpiece and is officially sanctioned by the publishers, for release on this highly desirable chunk of heavyweight vinyl by Ghost box Records.

Large Plants started as a solo project for Jack Sharp singer and guitarist of psych-folk luminaries Wolf People, while that band are on hiatus. It was spurred on by a song writing and recording frenzy during the lockdown of 2020 when Sharp played and recorded all instruments for the songs on the single and forthcoming album. In summer of 2021 the tracks were mixed by songwriter Chris Cohen (formerly of Deerhoof & Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti). The resulting sound is a kind of scuzzy, heavy, psych rock, sweetened by a rich vein of bucolic sorrow that Sharp’s vocal never fails to convey.

Sharp has now assembled a four-piece band and has started to tour the new material, to coincide with the Ghost Box releases.
