All & Nothing has become one of the icons of Spanish underground rock of the 70s and their records are among the most sought-after pieces by collectors. With a short discography consisting of just two singles - one of them was even released in Argentina with an alternative cover- the band All & Nothing has become one of the icons of Spanish underground rock of the 70s and their records are among the most sought-after pieces by collectors. The group was really nothing more than a studio project, put together by journalist and record producer José Luis Alvarez, who never performed in public. Their goal was to record songs in the same style that the emerging Andalusian rock scene was already doing in the south of Spain under the influence of the latest international rock trends -imported through the US military bases- and the local musical idiosyncrasy. Although most of the recorded songs - some of whom remained unreleased for years- succeeded in reflecting the original goal, for this first single of All & Nothing their producer instructed the band to record something similar to Iron Butterfly's classic 'In-a-gadda-da-vida', and 'Underground Vibrations nº 2' seems to be a very accomplished effort. The record has become a very sought-after item for those collecting the lesser-known side of 70s Spanish underground rock. The stunning rhythm section on both sides of the single plus the overwhelming organ solos and firing wah-wah and fuzz guitars explain the high interest on this elusive 45, a must in the top DJs record boxes. We are happy to reissue this amazing All & Nothing debut 7" for the first time, remastered from the original tapes and featuring the 1970 sleeve artwork.

The Swedish hardcore punk scene of the early 1980s was vibrant and wide, with underground movements yielding surprising extremities. This ultra-scarce cassette-only release, limited to 300 copies in 1984, was the first of the legendary Uproar label, pitting the blast-beat proto-grindcore of Asocial, from the small town of Hedemora, against the classical thrash of Bedrövlers, from the equally small town of Fagersta, whose name roughly translates to Miserablerz, a term assigned them by a bus driver that disliked their discordant noise. Subverting Bad Religion’s How Could Hell Be Any Worse for their own purposes, Asocial’s tracks are blindingly fast and Bedrövlers’ down and dirty-rare Swedish hardcore, at its best!

Canterbury-based progressive jazz-rock act Ben only released one obscure album, issued on Philips’ prog subsidiary Vertigo in 1971, but it’s a lovely collective of extended instrumental jams, worthy of discovery for those that missed it the first time around. Peter Davey’s saxophone and clarinet melodies push the material to high peaks, against an understated backing from future Nashville Teens bassist, Len Surtees and former Graham Bond drummer, David Sheen, keyboardist Alex Macleery and guitarist Gerry Reid adding flourishes at key moments. The songs “The Wooing Of The Child” and “The Wooing Of The Man” credit a certain K Jarrett as songwriter, making this rare beast all the more intriguing.

Founded in 1982, the CRACK didn't release their debut album until 1989. These British punkers were often tied into the Oi! scene of the mid-80s along with Cockney Rejects, and The Business, they had more in common with the melodic punk stylings of 999 and mod groups like The Jam or Secret Affair. Featuring a blistering wall of guitars and biting melodies, from the classic album opener "My World" to the raw closer "The Giddy House" The Crack deliver ten fantastic original tunes that, while firmly rooted in 1980s UK anthemic punk, also features a pop sensibility that presages the oncoming Brit-pop scene that would absolutely dominate the '90s. One of the best kept secrets of 80's California Hardcore Punk, TARGET OF DEMAND hailed from Long Beach and only released this 10-track smasher on the small Happy Hermit label and a couple compilation tracks before disbanding. Due to their very short existence as a band, and the fact that they were much more influenced by Teen Idles or SS Decontrol and the sounds coming out of Boston and the Midwest, rather than what was going on in California at the time, this incredibly ripping U.S. hardcore mayhem hasn’t been reissued until today.

During the late 1960s, Japanese band Blues Creation was formed from the ashes of an earlier group, the Bickles. Beginning as a covers act and then switching to original material, they had several line-up changes before calling it quits, only to be born again as Creation in 1973, touring the US with heavyweights Mountain. The self-titled Creation LP from 1975 saw guitarist Kazuo Takeda and drummer Masayuki Higuchi intact from the former incarnation. It captures this version of the band at their freshest with Takeda’s excellent guitar work firmly in the lead and often with heavy doses of fuzz – the best Creation album by a longshot.

The Varukers were one of the first groups of the UK 82 movement - the second generation of punk rock that took the spirit of ’77 and merged it with the incessant beat of Nwobhm – responsible for creating UK hardcore. Heavily inspired by Discharge, The Varukers released three 7”s in the early ‘80s before this, their first and most definitive album, came out in 1983 on the legendary Riot City Records (Vice Squad, Abrasive Wheels, Chaos U.K.). Following the massive success of their debut album in 1975, Kalapana returned to the studio in 1976, this time at Audiotronics in West Covina, California, this time taking the lead in producing the record. Barry Fasman, the Los Angeles-based producer whom the band credited with making their first record shine, joined them in the studio for string arrangements and to conduct certain tracks. However, on Kalapana II, the band felt fully prepared to produce the album themselves. And they did so, marvelously.

Little did they know, this would be the last time all four original band members would record an album together.

Second in a trio of eponymous albums from 1975 to 1977, Kalapana II expanded upon Kalapana I’s now-classic sound while leaning into styles not previously heard on their debut: lead vocalist Malani Bilyeu weaved a love-lorn country ballad into the new LP with “Wandering Stranger”, and keyboardist Kirk Thompson forever left his mark on the group’s legacy with the latin jazz-funk instrumental, “Black Sand”. (The tune became a staple for the band’s live performances: they’ve opened practically every concert ever since with the composition).

Considering the mastery and timelessness of Kalapana I, a sophomore LP could have easily fallen short of the high standard they had set. Yet they did it, cutting a second LP with back-to-back, timeless hits that continue to resonate today. As a quartet — supported by the propulsion of drummer Alvin Fejarang and saxophonist Michael Paulo’s prowess — Mackey Feary, Malani Bilyeu, D.J. Pratt, and Kirk Thompson solidified their legacy as one of Hawaii’s greatest groups of all-time with this recording.

Punk rock was all the rage in 1977, but that didn’t bother the Count Bishops: five unashamedly blokes, emerging from the bars and clubs of London, with a solid rock’n’rollin’ sound that some thought retrograde and others timeless. At the very least, they could claim to be the finest Polish, Australian, American, English band in town.

This was the debut of singer Dave Tice, who joined the original line-up of Zennon De Fleur (rhythm guitar and haulage), Johnny Guitar (guitar), Steve Lewins (bass) and Paul Balbi on drums. As tight a unit as you could wish for, they produced a driving, raucous rhythm and blues.

The LP is a mix of originals, blues tunes and classic 60s covers, all played with plenty of meat on the bone. Julian Holland is credited as piano on ‘Down The Road Apiece’, and I wonder whatever happened to him. Vic Maile, one of the country’s finest engineers, pushed faders and worked magic on the audio. Two originals, ‘Baby You’re Wrong’ / ‘Stay Free’ became the single off the album and the band hit the road with Motörhead. If you remember being on that tour, you weren’t.

It’s a record that has stood the test of time, when some of their punkier contemporaries now sound of their time.

The sleeve of the first issue was printed on the reverse of the board, giving it a suitable gritty, rough-cut look that we have reproduced here as best possible 45 years later. The blurred photograph on the front lends them an air of menace, a bunch of long hairs in a time of short cuts.

They went on to one more studio album before Zenon died as a result of a crash in his Aston Martin, which he had lovingly restored. The four remaining members reformed in 2005 for the Ace 30th anniversary party at Dingwalls Dancehall in Camden Town and they still rocked the house.

Forget Haikara, Apollo, Kalevala, Elonkorjuu... Kalevi Falk's eponymous album from 1971 may be rarer than any of those. Kalevi Falk were on Blue Master, the label also responsible for Apollo, and nobody is sure how many copies of their only LP were eventually sold or printed. Kalevi Falk continued playing until 1975 but due to everchanging lineups they never did another record. Although Kalevi Falk at the time was mostly known as the backing band for schlager stars such as Carola, their own work is a different bag. Ranging from a Beatles cover to psychedelic songs about vampires, this retro oddity has it all. The Svart reissue comes with the original gatefold layout and adds a new interview with a few of the band members.

Rush Hour’s RSS series excels in unearthing buried treasure, offering a second chance for artists and releases that have long been overlooked. That’s certainly the case with ‘Witches’, the superb sole single by British 1980s wave trio Zenana.

Originally released on seven-inch by the tiny PRM label in 1986, ‘Witches’ was the product of a sister-brother songwriting team whose music was mostly recorded in the front room of a terraced house in Nanpean, a small industrial village in Cornwall, England’s most south-westerly county. While the single was infectious, impeccably produced and dancefloor-ready, it sold in limited quantities at the time.

Zenana’s story can be traced back to the early 1980s, when singer-songwriter Anita Tedder founded the all-female trio as a vehicle for her musical ambitions. To bring her songs to life, she joined voices with her brother Mike, an early adopter of electronic music who had built a studio – nicknamed MFR, short for ‘Mike’s Front Room’ – in his Cornish home.

Countless Zenana tracks were recorded at ‘mfr’ between 1984 and ’86, with the resultant demo cassette securing the band a management contract, a slew of live bookings, a video shoot and even a television appearance. Buoyed by this underground success, they headed to the remote Sawmills Studio in Cornwall – famously only accessible by boat – to re-record ‘Witches’, a song inspired by local folk tales of witches gathering near Mike’s home.

While this version of ‘Witches’ failed to make an impact at the time, it has become something of a cult classic following its’ rediscovery by crate digger Kiernan Abbott – and subsequent championing by other dusty-fingered DJs including Antal, Skyrager, Trevor Jackson and Luke Una – in early 2023. The buzz inspired Zenana to perform live again for the first time in decades, with the story of their surprise comeback being covered by British media outlets including the BBC and (more surprisingly) the Daily Mail.

Now presented in re-mastered form, ‘Witches’ is a genuinely slept-on gem. Propelled forwards by punchy drum machine beats, a killer synth bassline and fizzing keyboard sounds, the song benefits greatly from strong vocals and an extra-percussive middle eight layered with vocalisations, cosmic spoken word sections and swirling noises.

It comes backed by a brand-new extended ‘spell of love’ courtesy of Bristol duo Bedmo Disco, AKA music journalist Matt Anniss (author of Join The Future: Bleep Techno and the Birth of British Bass Music) and DJ/production partner Gareth Morgan. Anniss is a long-time friend of Mike and Anita Tedder who has fond memories of visiting Mike’s home studio with his family around the time that ‘Witches’ was recorded.

Working from Zenana’s original MFR eight-track recording (tapes of the single version were lost years ago), Anniss and Morgan have turned in the extended ‘dance mix’ the track never had first time around. More atmospheric, clandestine and dancefloor-focused, it offers authentic nods to New York proto-house, mid-80s Shep Pettibone dubs, and the pioneering synth-pop productions and dub mixes of Factory Records regular Martin Rushent.

We’re doing a deeper dive into fave Lobby LOYDE’s oveure. “Do You Believe In Magic” is obviously not the famous hit by The Lovin’ Spoonful. It is a Lobby original and was in fact one of the earliest Coloured Balls tunes dating from early ‘72. The ‘Balls never ended up recording it. A few months after their split in early ‘75, Lobby recorded it with him on lead vocals, guitar, bass, keyboards, Jimmy Thompson (ex- Vince Maloney Sect, Tony Worley & The Blue Jays and Billy Thorpe & The Aztecs on drums, plus Paul Dixson on sax. This single was issued in December 1975 on the Bootleg label and has never been reissued before. It is an honor and pleasure to keep Lobby’s music alive. Edition of 400 copies on black vinyl.

There’s “obscure” and then there’s this record. This is simply Rockin’ Horse, featuring gods Jimmy Campbell and Billy Kinksley, recording under a different name. Their incredible Yes It Is LP completely flopped in 1971 and their label, Phillips Records, just didn’t want to know. They were still under contract as Rockin’ Horse so they got around that by releasing this single as "atlantis" on their producer HAL CARTER's Fury label in 1972. They should have sold these songs to John Lennon because this smokes anything he was doing at the time yet sounds eerily just like him. Available for the first time since 1972. “Manmade” is the sixth and last album from the legendary Norwegian prog/jazz rock band Ruphus, originally released in 1979. A worthy end to a career of a band who made an everlasting catalogue of exciting music. After the previous album (“Flying Colours” in 1978), Ruphus lost three of the five band members. One of them was Thor Bendiksen (drums), who had been in the band from the start. It seemed impossible to replace one of the founding members, but Bjørn Jenssen filled the vacant drum stool like a charm. On keyboards, Kjell Rønningen replaced Jan Simonsen, and on vocals Gudny Aspaas returned for a third period in the band. With Gudny back in the band and new forces on keys and drums, they ventured to England to record a new album with Steven O’Donnell and Colin H. Jennings as producers. The result was a bona fide classic, and this new version of Ruphus did an extensive tour of Europe in support of it. “Manmade” is the sixth and last album in a series of Ruphus re-issues from Karisma Records, remastered by Jacob Holm-Lupo (White Willow, The Opium Cartel, etc).

Rasman Maxwell Udoh was one of the best things to come out of the Nigerian music scene in the 80s and 90s. Born on the 29th of August 1959 and passed away on the 18th of December 2014, his 55 years on earth were a memorable time that resulted in many contributions to the musical heritage of Nigeria, and the messages he spread through his lyrics are still treasured by the downtrodden even today. Maxwell Udoh was a true pioneer, and his musical legacy is more than relevant, even to this day.

After he left Oron’s Methodist Boys High School in 1980, Maxwell’s uncle Patrick Peter Udoh took him under his wing. As a professional musician with The Doves Rock Band, Patrick taught him all he could until the band’s dissolution, which prepared Udoh for the trailblazing career that he would soon be embarking upon. Maxwell Udoh and His Masses Militia Band took Nigeria by storm with their debut album ‘Forward Ever, Backward Never’. The record was a massive hit that opened his route to greatness, taking his reputation far beyond the shores of Nigeria and winning him several music awards.

The fame that Maxwell would claim from this would skyrocket him into his election as chairman of the Performing Musicians Association of Nigeria. As a naturally inclined musician and charismatic leader type since childhood, his journey is a series of natural progressions that sequentially delivered to him the many stages of the recognition he deserved.

Rasman Maxwell Udoh was renowned as an advocate for social justice, as well as one of the first few Africans to sing authentic reggae in its true form. His musical catalogue overall helps tell the story of a man who was larger than life and is cherished both in Africa and the world over to this day. Maxwell’s independent albums and singles are classics for the ages and stand firmly and triumphantly as paragon examples of the best of Nigerian music.

At the notorious Rock Rally of 1982 Aroma Di Amore stands out with their wonderful handling of the Flemish language, a deep bass, typical cold new wave drums, biting guitar riffs with the occasional flavor of absolute madness. Frontman Jos Verlooy adopts the stage name Elvis Peeters. The explanation for this remarkable pseudonym choice: in 1977 – the period of the singer's musical awakening – one of the two famous rocking Elvises (not Costello, but Presley) succumbs to his pill addiction. So, dixit Verlooy, there is an Elvis vacant. A banal surname belongs next to that exotic first name. A combination that breathes rock 'n' roll, according to the singer.

His companion Gerry Vergult – who very much determines the sound with his metallic riffs, somewhat indebted to Jean-Marie Aerts – adopts the stage name Fred Angst. Completely in line with the depressing zeitgeist of the 1980s. Gerry eats and breathes music. Besides composing most of ADA’s songs, he records & self-produces a few fantastic dark en loner solo minimal wave tracks as Fred Angst. He is still musically active, more towards the electronic leftfield nowadays under the moniker Zool.

It is clear from an early age that companion Elvis Peeters possesses the gift of the word. As an adolescent he published the punkzine “Dus”. The punk spirit stimulates Peeters. He begins to transform the poetry that he has been entrusting to paper for some time into song lyrics. It is on a whim and without any stage experience that punk friends Peeters and Angst register for the Rock Rally as Aroma di Amore. On a bed of post-punk and cold wave (Joy Division, Wire and Sisters of Mercy are the main influences), they initially let out playful, minimalist and nonsensical slogans such as "Doe De Mafia" (1982) and "Gorilla Dans De Samba" (1983). Later on, the tone becomes more serious, although Peeters' choice of words continues to show a penchant for absurdism and sarcasm. No one in Dutch songwriting imitates this verbal elasticity, certainly at that time.

The numerous songs about war are downright horrifying. In the 1980s, an arms race is underway. When the Belgian government decides to install nuclear missiles in 1981, Aroma di Amore asks for one minute of silence in the hall during performances. In "Lauwe Oorlog" (1983), Peeters exposes the core of his unrest: “paraat voor de parade / de vrede wordt begraven / met militaire eer”. To this day, the frontman of AdA still proudly wears his at least 30 year old 'atomic energy, no thanks!' button.

In 1984 Aroma releases Koude Oorlog on the new and independent Brussels label Play It Again Sam. The traditional press and radio ignore the record, but in the alternative circuits the mini-album does not go unnoticed, and the group starts to build a solid fan base, resulting in more and more offers for gigs. There's also interest in the Netherlands, and due to the international contacts of PIAS, the record also ends up in France, Switzerland, Spain and Canada.

Encouraged by this modest success, the group returns to the studio for a 12" single. With new group member Frits De Cauter on sax, they record "Voor De Dood". To this day, Voor De Dood remains the most popular AdA song, as evidenced by the countless compilations on which the song has appeared.

AdA goes to the Netherlands to record their next album “De Sfeer Van Grote Dagen”. The people from Nasmak have built a new studio in Eindhoven and one of the members, Theo Van Eenbergen (later Henry Rollins), will be the producer. “De Sfeer Van Grote Dagen” is the group's most adventurous album, and the reviews are again unanimously favorable. However, sales are disappointing and PIAS proposes to recruit Chris Reed of Red Lorry Yellow Lorry and record a new single with him. "Zonder Omzien" is recorded at the prestigious Pyramid Studio. However, PIAS is waiting to release the album and in the meantime AdA is recording a number of extra tracks with producer Ludo Camberlin, including "Koekoek In De Stad". Towards the end of the year, Lo and Elvis travel to Africa for a few months and as a result the group comes to a standstill. In this period, Zonder Omzien is released.

At the beginning of 1986, Peeters and Meulen return, and Andrea Smits leaves the group. Luc Pillards is hired as a replacement, and when Ludo Camberlin presents himself as a new label boss and producer (Anything But Records), they start recording their first full album for the label. “Harde Feiten" kicks in immediately, and the group is back up to cruising speed. In the first week of release, the record even appears in the bestseller list of the record stores.

At the beginning of 1987 the recordings for the second album start, this time in a production by Peeters and Angst themselves. Shortly after the shooting, AdA goes to Switzerland for a short but successful tour, with Men 2nd and Cas & Organized Crime as support act. "Koudvuur" is published in the autumn and considered to be their strongest record so far by the group, the reactions are rather low. Both the reviews in the press and the sales are disappointing and put a damper on the joy. Nevertheless, the group is invited to perform in Valencia, Spain, where they have an unexpected success.

MUTANT SOUNDS BLOG

Aroma Di Amore have always been outsiders, even within the confinement of the alternative rock circuit. Their peculiar blend of raw guitars, electronics, Dutch lyrics and unconventional song structures was too hybrid for many. Those howewer who, without prejudice, would lend an ear to the band's music, discovered an energetic, authentic and uncompromising collective that stood above all trends. While so many Belgian "connaisseurs" had their doubts about the possibilities of international recognition for a band singing in Dutch, Aroma Di Amore toured France, Switzerland and Spain; their records figured in alternative charts from Poland to Canada.

From beginning to end the nucleus of Aroma Di Amore consisted of Elvis PEETERS, who in a inimitable, possessed way delivered his highly original lyrics, and Fred ANGST, guitarist mastering the heaviest riffs as well as refined tapestries of sound. Furthermore, the line-up varied throughout the band's carreer with:- H.K. (Guitarist from 1982 until 1983)- Andrea SMITS (Organ from 1982 until 1985)- Luc PILLARDS (Synthsizer in 1986)- Jan WANDELAAR (Guitar and synthesizer in 1986)- Pulcherie (Saxophone in 1983)- Wout DOCKX (Bass from 1987 until 1988)and especially- Lo MEULEN (Bass from 1983 until 1987)and the late Frits DE CAUTER (Saxophone from 1984 until 1986)contributing to the music.

Emerging from the northern market town of Grantham in the early 1980s, English Dogs reached the punk spotlight opening for Charged GBH and Discharge. Formed in late 1977 in Darlington, UK, legendary punkers Major Accident were initially influenced by the Pistols and the Clash. A very sad fate befell their early studio activities: both their first recording sessions in 1980, which was supposed to be their debut single (Terrorist Gang/War Boots) and the following one, which produced a completely mucked-up, unusable first edition of this LP, remained unreleased for years. It took until late 1982 for their first proper release to see the light of day: produced by Donkeys guitarist Neil Ferguson, their debut album Massacred Melodies finally came out on Step Forward, supported by a full UK tour with label-mates Chelsea. The distinctive 'Clockwork Orange' image (they were the first punk band to adopt the look from Kubrick's famous movie, which was banned in the UK at the time and impossible to see anywhere) and their song writing, by far more peculiar than the average Uk82 punk band, allowed them to grow a sizable following, and their classic sleeve artwork by Paul Dillon started appearing on the back of more than a few black leather jackets.

Bristol Punk Pioneers Disorder formed around 1980, during the second wave of UK punk rock. Their approach to DIY ethics was so deep that they decided not to sign to Riot City, but to create a label of their own, for a bunch of classic singles the average distortion level of which led BBC DJ John Peel to describe Disorder as sounding like "shit". In fact, unlike many contemporaries like Crass or Conflict, Disorder showed no ambitions in stylistic experimentation: their debut LP 'Under The Scalpel Blade' is one blast after the other of pure rage, packaged in two-minute bursts of hyper-speed drumming, distorted guitars, and screaming vocals. 1980’s Australia were a blistering inferno of totally great powerpop, garage- and punkrock bands. Hoodoo Gurus, Stems and Lime Spiders were on top of their game and labels like Waterfront and Citadel put out albums and 45’s that any serious music aficionado would die for.

The Spliffs formed in Townsville, a small city on the northeastern coast of Queensland in Australia. In 1986 they unleashed their debut 45. Recorded all by themselves and released DIY style they got some rave reviews and got to play Sidney, Melbourne and Brisbane opening for The Saints and Hoodoo Gurus. Their debut single is fab jangly 80’s powerpop right up there with Plimsouls or The Nerves.

Housed in a deluxe picture sleeve that comes with a printed inner sleeve filled with many rare and previously unpublished photos plus an interview with Spliffs main man and guitar-slinger Jamie Forsberg conducted by power pop guru Ric Menck. Orange color vinyl.

The scottish musician, born in 1953 in Port Glasgow, is one of the most eclectic artist of the so-called minimal wave scene. Alongside german singer Claudia Brücken (vocalist of the hit-makers Propaganda) he formed Act a short-lived synthpop group signed to ZTT Records in the late eighties. Licensed by Cherry Red in 1982, the double album ‘Contradictions’ is the third effort in Leer high and rising career. After the seminal debut on Industrial Records with Robert Rental – The Bridge (1979) – Leer ventured on a solo career with the brave synth wave of ‘Letter From America’ and his personal masterpiece ‘Contradictions’. The latter is such an enigmatic piece of work, with alien melodies as in the case of the ‘Soul Gypsy’ infectious white funk. The whole album was recorded in his living room at home onto 4-track using borrowed equipment ( Korg synth, Ult-sound drum computer & guitars ) from his friend Morgan Fisher. Featuring Leer’s haunting, uncertain vocal – recorded quietly, so as not to wake his girlfriend in their bedsit! – crooning over a minimal bass pulse and discreet whines and washes of primitive Wasp synthesiser, it retains its peculiar lo-fi magic four decades on.

Channel 3, aka CH3, was formed in 1980 in suburban Cerritos, about 20 miles southeast of Los Angeles, with frontman Mike Magrann, guitarist Kimm Gardener, bassist Larry Kelly and drummer Mike Burton. Signing to Posh Boy in 1981, their eponymous EP had the hit ‘Manzanar,’ which was championed by John Peel on the BBC. Posh Boy founder Robbie Fields was in the producer’s chair for their excellent debut, Fear of Life, a blistering punk assault on American values. Free from the heavy metal leanings of their later work, this no-holds-barred debut is a must for all fans of So-Cal hardcore.
