Dark Entires is honored to reissue the long out of print debut album Elevator to Eden by LIVES OF ANGELS. Lives of Angels was the brainchild of GERALD O'CONNELL from London, England. In 1974 he worked at CBS studios mastering recordings from tape to disc. By 1977 he joined his first band MYSTERY PLANE, led by school mate Mark Harvey and later joined by his soon-to-be wife Catherine. Gerald branched off in 1980 forming Lives of Angels as an outlet for his own compositions. He recorded, produced and played all of the instruments on "Elevator to Eden" between 1981 and 1983, using a primitive set up of drum machines, one keyboard, guitar and a tape echo. Influenced by the Krautrock sounds of Neu! and Amon Duul II as well as US psychedelic rock, Lives of Angles crafted their own unique post-punk sound. Elevator to Eden was originally released in 1983 on cassette by Color Tape Records, the label started by Gary Ramon of Modern Art. Then in 1986 Fire Records remixed and re-released the album on vinyl but the band was not happy with the mixes. This reissue features the original 4-track cassette mixes of Elevator To Eden on vinyl for the first time ever. The LP includes 9 songs featured on the original Color Tapes release. All songs have been remastered for vinyl by GEORGE HORN at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley directly from the original master tapes. Each LP comes with unreleased photos, original artwork and a lyrics for all songs.

"Before I made my home in & became Tanzania's #1 acknowledged periodontist, I was a busking girl throughout the UK. From early 1978 until the mid 80's I squatted everywhere; Glasgow, Cardiff, Manchester, Hastings & finally London. Music was our currency-mostly crude folk, DIY punk or amateurish, Klaus Schulze inspired synthesizer buzzings echoed off the walls wherever I chose to lay my hat. Admirers of records from this time know all too well that many compilations-mostly regional-flooded Britannia in those lean years, perhaps my favorite being one entitled Scaling Triangles. It was the first female forward collection I'd come across; three women artists, each tracking three songs. Only The Petticoats I was familiar with as she'd released a 7" ep on her own. The other two-Sole Sister, Sub Verse-seem to start & end here (Sub Verse contributes a track to the 'Compilation 1' lp on Starforce Studios-4th Wall ed). And as such, it is a diverse panorama of 'Le Beau Sexe' flexing wooly muscles. If this is from a particular scene I cannot say, but if you want taunt (Sub Verse), aggro (Petticoats) & free (Sole Sister) moving tracks, look no further. Fans of Young Marble Giants, The Flowers, Udder Milk Decay could do worse. Thank you Johan Klemp, it is so great to hear these songs so many years later. Faith and Minor Threat broke up within months of each other in 1983. During 1983 and ‘84 there was a general malaise in the DC hardcore scene which saw a lot of the founding bands and scene makers move to the sidelines as shows became increasingly violent and the attitude became increasingly mainstream. In the summer of '85 there was renewed spirit, often referred to as "Revolution Summer," (ushered in by the Rites of Spring and members of a band that formed later called Fire Party). This "Revolution Summer" included a handful of bands who preferred smaller more intimate venues and focused on a more personal and introspective interpretation of punk rock. Embrace was part of this renewal. They were formed by ex-Minor Threat member IAN Mackaye and three of the former members of Faith. They played shows from the summer of 1985 until the Spring of 1986.

Among the impressive discography by Portland, OR Hardcore Punk forerunners Poison Idea, their 1986 debut LP Kings Of Punk is considered one of the most important entries. Originally released on the Pusmort label owned and operated by legendary visual artist Brian “Pushead” Schroeder (Misfits, Metallica), Kings Of Punk introduced Poison Idea to a wide audience than their previously the self-released and distributed releases on Fatal Erection, the record label co-run by their guitarist Tom “Pig Champion” Roberts. Taking full advantage of the situation, Poison Idea made sure their first full-length release would make an impact on the American Hardcore Punk scene. From the grisly, full-color cover image of the band’s name carved into the chest of vocalist Jerry A. Lang to the blistering music contained within, Kings Of Punk was convincing enough to earn Poison Idea the attention that helped spread their legend and kicked off the band's most prolific period: the late 80s - early 90s. Out-of-print since TKO’s ephemera-packed “Portland Edition” version from the summer of 2022, Kings Of Punk now returns as the third installment in TKO’s Poison Idea Remasters series. This new edition finds all eleven tracks shined up while still retaining the feral bite of the original, proving almost forty years since its release, Kings Of Punk will forever be evidence enough for Poison Idea to claim their self-appointed throne.

Emerging out of Amsterdam's vibrant squat scene in 1979, The Ex – a name chosen for the ease and speed with which it could be spray-painted onto a wall – have for four decades been an entirely self-sustaining musical entity, charting a course through the global underground with a spirit of freedom and radical exploration.

Blueprints For A Blackout, The Ex's fifth album and first double LP, combines caustic studio experimentations and loose songs from their gripping live-set at the time. The band consisted of singer G.W. Sok, guitarist Terrie Ex, two new recruits on bass, Luc and Yoke, and drummer Sabien Witteman, along with a plethora of guests including Mekons' Jon Langford and long-serving sound engineer Dolf Planteijdt, among others.

Originally released in 1984 on the band's own Pig Brother Productions, Blueprints veers from jagged punk explosions to sharply focused improvisations featuring field recordings that would become a hallmark of their subsequent forays into free jazz and experimental music. The overall effect is not unlike the menace of a slowly building winter storm.

Tracks like "Rabble With A Cause," "U.S. Hole" and "Scrub That Scum" stand out as exemplars of this phase of The Ex. Comparisons can be made to contemporaries Einstürzende Neubauten, NoMeansNo and Svätsox as well as later Crass label bands.

Talk Talk’s lifespan was short but sweet. The band released only 5 albums that kept evolving their sound from their new wave beginnings to pioneering post-rock. This record features live performances of their biggest hits, including: ‘Such a Shame’, ‘It's My Life’, ‘Life's What You Make It’ and ‘Living in Another World’. Side 2 of this vinyl was recorded at the Hammersmith Odeon, London, England on May 7, 1986. Soon after the band would stop touring. Only a decade ago Leong Lau remained a well-hidden Malaysian-Australian treasure, known only to small circles of Australian record collectors. In 2013 we met Leong in person at the Brisbane state library, where after a long and somewhat transcendental ‘conversation’, received his blessings to re-release his music.

In 2014, we reissued his sophomore album ‘That Rongeng Sound’ and later in 2021, his sole single ‘late Night Flyer. In 2024, we are going back to finish the triangle of Leong releases, with a repress of his debut 1976 album ‘Dragon Man’. A raw and electrifying album that continues to stand the test of time.

Dragon Man might best be described musically as psyc/rock, however the significant use of soul/funk and jazz melodies adds a unique musical depth that makes it hard to categorise. However, what truly sets Leong apart is his distinct vocal style, delivering half sung/half spoken lyrics in a stereotypical Aussie accent that comes across more like a sermon than what might be conceived as ‘traditional’ songs.

Moreover, in a time where the Australian music industry and its performers’ musical styles were dictated by major labels, Leong began to break down those barriers by self-releasing his music. This rewarded Leong creative control, where he was able to dictate the musical and cultural themes, with songs like ‘Dragon Man’ and ‘Deep In The Jungle’ that both pay homage to his unique Chinese/Malay heritage. That said, Dragon Man is both a significant musical and cultural statement that’s just as poignant today as it was then.

Major Arcana was a group led by counter-culture Milwaukee icon JIM Spencer, featuring a revolving cast of musicians / collaborators. The core of the band was Jim Spencer (guitar, vocals); Randall Dubis (electric guitar); Michael Burdecki (bass, slide guitar) and Jim Kitchen (percussion, harmonica). They were helped in the studio by some friends / musicians like Sigmund Snopek III and Barry Patton among many others.

Released on Jim Spencer’s own private label (A Major Label, home also to Anonymous of “Inside The Shadow” fame), the album opens with the terrific psych-folk of “Western Wind” and closes with an acid-folk rendition of “Greensleeves”. In between, you’ll also find some blues rock, SSW ballads, jazzy bits…

Sorcerer Records present a reissue of Lubricated GOAT's debut LP Plays The Devil's Music, originally released in 1987. It's been out of circulation for over two decades, and Sorcerer Records presents this classic slice of underground Australiana in all its glory. Recorded over two recording sessions in mid-1986, one in Perth and one in Adelaide, Plays The Devil's Music wasn't really seen by LG founder/mainstay STU Spasm (ex-BEASTS OF Bourbon, Salamander JIM, et al.) as a part of any grand musical plan. He recorded these tracks with his friends Martin Bland, Brett Ford, and Pete Hartley and went back to Sydney with the tapes. John Foy of Black Eye Records loved the results and the band known as Lubricated Goat was born. Over the course of several more full-lengths and an EP or two, the band made themselves a reputation as one of Australia's finest purveyors of post-punk noise-rock before relocating to the US. The musical scene centered around the Black Eye label in Sydney at the time, with bands such as the 'Goat, Thug (featuring a young Tex Perkins), No More Bandicoots, Box The Jesuit, etc. remains one of Australia's richest, weirdest and most inventive conglomeration of musicians and artists, and Stu and company were right in the thick of it. Lubricated Goat were (perhaps correctly) often compared to the Butthole Surfers at the time, and their mix of punk, post-punk, noise, and a taste for the absurd puts them firmly in the same camp. Throw in a little bit of Stooges/Birthday Party-style grunt and a distinctly Australian sense of humor and you're getting close to the magic of early Lubricated Goat. "Stations of the Crass is the second album by Crass, released in 1979. The record, originally released as a double 12", includes live tracks from a gig recorded at the Pied Bull pub in Islington, London, on August 7, 1979. The first three sides contain the studio tracks and play at 45 rpm, while the final side comprises the live material and plays at 33 rpm. The album's title is not only a pun on the Catholic rite of the Stations of the Cross (such jibes against the religious establishment were typical of Crass), but is also a reference to the graffiti campaign that the band had been conducting around London's underground railway system, the cover artwork depicting a wall at Bond Street tube station that had allegedly been 'decorated' by them. Although the album met mixed critical reception at first, it managed to sell at least 20,000 copies within two weeks.”

Formed in early 1970 by Deep Purple bassist Nick Simper, Warhorse began as a backing band for singer Marsha Hunt. The group initially also featured Rick Wakeman, but he departed the band in April 1970 to join Strawbs. The band’s self-titled debut album was released on Vertigo in November 1970 and is a fine example of progressive hard rock of the era. With a heavy Hammond organ touch the group was in fact leading a new way of thinking, fusing neoclassical elements with heavy blues. Compared to label mates Black Sabbath, Warhorse were in the end much closer to Atomic Rooster and Quatermass. A truly welcomed re-issue in gatefold vinyl !

Released in 1974 with a "quadraphonic" sound. Brilliant songs by a cohesive band that knew how to materialize a memorable and original fusion project at an international level.

If Latin funk exists, it's thanks to pioneering bands like Black Sugar, a Peruvian group created in the early seventies that recorded two fundamental albums for the Afro-American and Latin genre. A pair of albums that are now re-released by the Valencian label Discos Monterey with the usual sound and visual quality to which we are accustomed. The roots of this band come from the Far-Fen (syllables for Farfisa and Fender), formed in the late sixties by guitarist Víctor "Coco" Salazar and Miguel "Chino" Figueroa on keyboards. One night they were spontaneously joined by the sensational voice of Carlos "Pacho" Mejía. In the seventies, in the Peruvian capital there was a shortage of "white" sugar and the darker cane sugar was consumed. Hence the group's name. Peru was in the midst of a dictatorship and the military were against music that did not come from Peruvian folklore.

Rock and roll with foreign roots languished due to the imposition of the established power, and Black Sugar emerged, whose main skill was to mix, with enormous passion and fascinating ability, Latin sounds and the funk that came from the United States.

The result is two memorable albums, with a large part of their own songs and most of them composed by Pacho. The first, with an eponymous title, was released in 1971 by Sono Radio, whose musical director Jaime Delgado Aparicio was in charge of the fiery arrangements with generous brass and energetic percussion. Released with the credits in English, they managed to break into the Top Ten of the Miami charts with the song "Too Late". They even received an offer to record their next album in the United States, but decided to stay in their country. That second album was released in 1974 with a "quadraphonic" sound, taking advantage of the label's magnificent studios. From the mid-seventies onwards the desertions began and it would not be until 2010 that the project would be recovered with some historical and younger musicians.

To listen to Black Sugar is to go back to the Peruvian night of the seventies with fiery music, full of sensuality and rhythm. Brilliant songs by a cohesive band that knew how to materialize a memorable fusion project, very original and at an international level. The incongruous, yet glorious, creative partnership between Nancy Sinatra and Lee Hazlewood was well underway when the two singular artists reunited to record 1972â€™s _Nancy & Lee Again_, a follow-up to their bestselling duet debut, _Nancy & Lee_. Nancy, the eldest daughter of Frank Sinatra, had been working with the Oklahoma-born songwriter since 1965, when she topped the pop charts with â€œThese Boots Are Made For Walkinâ€™.â€ Over the next five years, the two artists forged a prolific relationship in the studio, with Hazlewood writing and producing many of Nancyâ€™s solo hits. Soon, the duo found success with a series of duets, including â€œSand,â€ â€œSummer Wine,â€ and â€œSome Velvet Morningâ€ â€“ all of which appeared on their highly-influential 1968 debut.

Not long after the critical acclaim and chart success of Nancy & Lee died down, however, Hazlewood unexpectedly relocated to Sweden, leaving his musical partner in the proverbial dust. America, meanwhile, was in the midst of a cultural shift, as the Vietnam War waged on. By the turn of the decade, the musical landscape had changed significantly. â€œTrivial music and not profound music became unimportant,â€ recalls Nancy, speaking to Hunter Lea. â€œIt was a tough time.â€ And yet, despite the circumstances, the stars somehow aligned for the duo to record some of their most magnificent music together.

Returning to Los Angeles for the project, Hazlewood â€“ who reprised his role as producer â€“ chose to take a new direction with the duoâ€™s sophomore album. Nancy recalls, â€œIt was more dramatic; it was more fun to do, more challenging to doâ€¦. It was more grandiose.â€ For the lush, orchestral arrangements, they collaborated with Larry Muhoberac (an original member of Elvis Presleyâ€™s TCB band, whose early â€˜70s credits also included Barbra Streisand, Neil Diamond, and Lalo Schifrin) and Clark Gassman, who had worked on Hazlewoodâ€™s 1970 LP, _Cowboy in Sweden_. Backing vocals from brothers John and Tom Bahler, who remain two of the most recorded singers in history, added additional texture to several songs.

The big sound that Nancy describes above is exemplified in the albumâ€™s cinematic opener, â€œArkansas Coal (Suite).â€ Clocking in at nearly six minutes long, the dynamic overture tells the tale of an ill-fated coal miner (sung by Hazlewood), while Nancy adjusts her vocals to sing as both the minerâ€™s daughter and his wife. Hazlewoodâ€™s knack for vivid, nuanced storytelling shines throughout _Nancy & Lee Again_, particularly in â€œParis Summer,â€ which details the conflict that a married woman faces, as she engages in a passionate affair. Another highlight is the country-inspired hit, â€œDid You Ever,â€ which was released as the albumâ€™s lead single. After it landed at No.2 on the U.K. pop charts, the song served as an alternate title track in several countries, including LP pressings in the U.K., Germany, and Canada.

One of the most emotionally-charged moments on _Nancy & Lee Again_ is a cover of Dolly Partonâ€™s â€œDown From Dover.â€ The heartbreaking tune tells the tale of a pregnant teenager, who has been abandoned by her lover and her family and ultimately gives birth to a stillborn baby. While Partonâ€™s 1970 version was sung from the teenagerâ€™s point of view, Hazlewood and Sinatra transformed the country song into a duet. Hazlewood, who offers the manâ€™s side of the story, sings in a notably deeper octave than his signature baritone.

Another poignant selection is â€œCongratulations,â€ which describes a soldier coming home from Vietnam. â€œHis face has grown old and his eyes have grown cold/And they tell you of where he has been/Congratulations, you sure made a man out of him,â€ Hazlewood sings, pointedly. Nancy, who performs as the vetâ€™s wife, argues that the song had a deeper meaning for her duet partner. â€œLee started out a hawk, he was an army guy, so he was all for the war in the beginning. We didnâ€™t talk about it, but at some point, he changed radically. â€˜Congratulationsâ€™ was almost like an apology from him. I donâ€™t want to put words in his mouth, but it was as though he was saying â€˜Iâ€™m really sorry.â€™â€

The song â€œFriendship Trainâ€ could also be interpreted as an apology of sorts â€“ this time to Nancy. â€œYou've been hurt and I've been hurt/Now we're living pain,â€ the tune opens. When Hazlewood moved to Sweden without telling his longtime musical partner, Sinatra was understandably upset. â€œI felt pretty betrayed. I mean, who does that? Who just up and disappears like that? Iâ€™ll never understand it,â€ she reveals. But the uplifting duet â€“ a slice of â€˜70s pop perfection â€“ offers reaffirming words of love between friends. â€œ[Lee] felt things very deeply and tended to express his feelings in song instead of in real life,â€ explains Nancy.

Also included is â€œMachine Gun Kelly,â€ penned by a staple of the 70s singer-songwriter movement, Danny Kortchmar (James Taylor, Carole King, Linda Ronstadt). Recorded several months after the release of the album, the song found Nancy reuniting with Billy Strange, who arranged many of her solo albums, as well as Nancy & Lee. Sinatra and Hazlewood first performed â€œMachine Gun Kellyâ€ during their residency at Las Vegasâ€™ Riviera Hotel in February 1972 (later released as a concert documentary on Swedish television). While the recording has long remained a career favorite of Nancyâ€™s, it would be decades before it was officially released.

_Nancy & Lee Again_ remains a creative high point in the careers of Sinatra and Hazlewood and, upon its release, garnered rave reviews from Billboard, _Record World_, and _Cash Box_, among others. Yet, _Nancy & Lee Again_ never received the spotlight it so utterly deserved. â€œWe didnâ€™t have label support at all in those days,â€ recalls Nancy. â€œWithout the strength of a label, records die. We were old. We were old-fashioned. We were just not what was happening. Itâ€™s a very ageist kind of business.â€ Nevertheless, she adds, â€œI think itâ€™s a very good album. Once again a work by Patrick Campbell-Lyons without Alex Spyropoulos, this time Songs Of Love And Praise showed a return to a more classic Nirvana sound. Campbell-Lyons revisited two of the most loved songs by the band, Pentecost Hotel from their debut LP and Rainbow Chaser from their second one. The album opens precisely with the amazing uptempo beat of Rainbow Chaser, which while sounding faithful to the original recording, it comes with a totally different approach on the arrangements. Campbell-Lyons states on the liners that he went for a step further in that field, and looked for a jazzy atmosphere. It sets the tone of the album: upbeat good vibrations songs that differ from the dark mood of the previous Local Anaesthetic LP and that besides these two songs revisited presents all new material.

Uplifted and positive, Songs Of Love And Praise gives what the title promises to take the classic Nirvana sound from their first three albums one step further with the collaboration of Bobby Harrison (Procol Harum, Snafu) Lesley Duncan, Maggie Bell and Sylvia Schuster (who had already played live with Nirvana at the time of their debut album).

The Wah Wah edition is the first ever official vinyl edition since 1971. Housed in a glossy textured reproduction of the original sleeve and featuring two bonus tracks not on the original release. 500 copies only!

First reissued by us in 2012 and out of print for many years, here’s a new, improved repress of this UK psych holy grail. Axe (known also as Axe Music and finally Crystalline by the time they recorded their rare acetate) were an obscure British psych band led by acid-rock guitar player extraordinaire Tony Barford and graced by Vivienne Jones ethereal vocals. The band hailed from Northampton (home also of their mates Dark of “Dark Round The Edges” fame). In 1970, they recorded a demo album of which only 12 copies were pressed as a demo acetate. Here's a straight reissue of this legendary artifact, as the previous "reissue" on the Kissing Spell label from 1993 and credited to Axe was altered without the band consent and included newly edited tracks, artificial echo / phasing effects, altered song titles...

Here' you'll find the acetate recording on its pure form: 100% unadulterated heavy psych and acid-rock sounds full of raw, fuzzed-out guitars and dreamy female vocals. Four impressive original songs plus a long, psyched to the max cover of Love's "A house is not a motel" which has to be heard to be believed. Carefully remastered from an original acetate copy in 24-bit. Unfortunately, no masters survived and no 100% clean copies are known to exist of the original acetates, but you’ll get the best result for the possibilities. In fact we’ve managed to improve the sound a bit over our first edition from 2012. * New artwork (the original acetate came in blank sleeve), insert with unseen pictures and liner notes by Paul Cross (Sweet Floral Albion). Travel back in time to the modern pre-Revolution Teheran and dig this wonderful, ear-catching album from 1976 by Iranian female singer Pari Zangeneh. Traditional Persian folk songs with a lovely, sweet psychedelic flavor with the use of beautiful strings, flutes, charming and tasty drumming, some organ and orchestration, percussions… imagine a Persian version of Mellow Candle or Vashti Bunyan and you’re there! Born in 1939 in Kermanshah (Iran), Pari Zangeneh is a Soprano singer that lost her sight after a car accident in 1972. Her work over the years on restoring traditional Persian music and regional folk songs is invaluable. In 1976 she recorded this very unique album commissioned by Kānoon (Institute for the Intellectual Development of Children and Young Adults), a social organization that produced many kinds of materials (books, films, records) for children in Iran. Sought-after Belgian minimal synth finally reissued.

They were interesting times, the early eighties. Against a backdrop of cold war and economic crises, the DIY attitude of the earlier punk movement had spawned near countless new genres where artists and bands broke the three-chord guitar mould and experimented with new content matter, singular song structures and – in many cases – new instruments. Synthesizers became affordable and were no longer the sole privilege of rock millionaires. All around the globe, musical creativity boomed as never before, and Belgium was no exception: Digital Dance, Snowy Red, The Names, Pseudocode, Marine, 1000 Ohm, De Kommeniste, M.Bryo & D.M.T., De Brassers, Struggler, Siglo XX are but a few legendary names of bands and artists who started making a name for themselves.

In Leuven, things were happening as well. Until then, the music scene in this rather provincial town had been dominated by straightforward rock and blues acts. Not for much longer, though: in places like Arno'z and (later) The Gladhouse, where young budding artists met with kindred spirits, bands were often formed on the spot and, more importantly, started to make ripples.

Ludo Camberlin and Karel 'Bam' Saelemaekers already had a certain track record in Leuven's burgeoning music microcosm. But what they shared would become the cornerstone of A Blaze Colour (Against The Dark Trees Beyond): a fascination for new forms and instruments, a penchant for sonic adventure and a profound love for gripping songs. The full band name, by the way, was inspired by a phrase from the Irish-American novelist J.P. Donleavy, a writer who belongs in the definitely-worth-checking-out section.
