Evolving the sonic toolkit she employed on Patterns For Auto-tuned Voices And Delay (2023), Lisel transforms pop into a canvas for operatic storytelling. Along with making her own work, Bagg is a classical singer working in baroque and contemporary experimental opera, and with her project Lisel, she seeks to develop new, expressive qualities out of ancient vocal techniques from the Baroque and Renaissance periods. Her opera experience has infused her with a desire for a big, cinematic sound and holistic world-building, creating a “total artwork,” and she fits that medium into the form of a solo project. From haunting whispers to soaring melodies, she reaches back towards ancient musical traditions while incorporating futuristic sounds in order to imagine how a possible future might look back at contemporary existence.

Dystopic stories melt into pop songs, hammered to ruin. Both through sonics and lyrics, the album recounts urgent narratives as ancient mythological fables, chronicling in operatic density the deepening awareness of the world’s looming, inevitable vanishing point.

Photographer Carla Rossi further builds Lisel’s world through a series of photographs that similarly draw on Renaissance and Medieval painting, while placing them aesthetically in a digital realm. In these dramatic, hyper-stylized photos, Lisel takes up classical poses and yields iconographic symbols, further exploring the dissonance in her work as these manufactured “paintings” recall storytelling of the past while depicting images from an imagined future.

High Top Mountain certainly leaned traditional, but it also set the precedent that Simpson was not an artist content to coast, was not someone just trying to write the easiest song to ride to the top. He was willing to put in the work, and hire $25,000 worth of studio time and band members to make his vision a reality, and didn’t very much care what happened next. Only that he’d done it. Freedom, as a famous country singer once wrote for Janis Joplin, is just another word for nothing left to lose. The most free performer we’ve had these last 10 years is Simpson, who took a trip to High Top Mountain and never came back down.

Much of Montevallo was deceptive in its simplicity, hiding era-defining songwriting talent and a whole new mode of country crossover behind a seemingly easy-to-replicate formula of marrying traditional country instruments with programmed beats and slick, dynamic melodies. Its velvet revolution won Hunt years of radio dominance and anticipated a tidal wave of what’s been termed “boyfriend country” — legions of imitators who took the singer’s gently flirtatious tack and R&B influences to their cloying extremes. Plenty in Nashville didn’t see Montevallo as a changing of the guard, and even after he’d become a country megastar wrote him off as either a novelty, insufficiently capital-C Country, or both. When confronted with resistance about his own mode of widening country music’s lens Hunt has tended to return to the root of the issue, which runs much deeper than a simple disdain for pop music in country or concern about preserving some of its imagined “authentic” past.

Like the many Banded Stilts that spread across the cover of her newest album Flood, Stella Donnelly is wading into uncharted territory. Here, she finds herself discovering who she is as an artist among the flock, and how abundant one individual can be. Flood is Donnelly’s record of this rediscovery: the product of months of risky experimentation, hard moments of introspection, and a lot of moving around.

Donnelly’s early reflections on the relationship between the individual and the many can be traced back to her time in the rainforests of Bellingen, where she took to birdwatching as both a hobby and an escape in a border-restricted world. By paying closer attention to the natural world around her, Donnelly recalls “I was able to lose that feeling of anyone’s reaction to me. Looking back at the Banded Stilt, Donnelly ultimately appreciates how when “seen in a crowd they create an optical illusion, but on its own it’s this singular piece of art.” While each song in Flood is a singular artwork unto itself, the collective shares all of Stella Donnelly in abundance: her inner child, her nurturing self, her nightmare self; all of herself has gone into the making of this record, and although it would take an ocean to fathom everything she feels, it’s well worth diving in.

Desire Pathway is Jersey rock band Screaming Females' first release of all new material since 2018. The trio recorded Desire Pathway at Pachyderm Studios, the same Minnesota space where Nirvana recorded 1993’s In Utero. Bandleader Marissa Paternoster shared a brief statement about the lead single “Brass Bell,” calling it “a song about surrendering your autonomy to something so overwhelmingly powerful you willingly relinquish your ambitions and self-worth.” She continued, “My intention was to draw an interesting dichotomy between the muscular nature of the song and the rather bleak, worried lyrics.” Limited to 750 copies, the VMP exclusive version of Screaming Females' Desire Pathway is pressed on Red vinyl at Citizen Vinyl. Bitte Orca, 10 years after its original release, still retains its awe-inspiring power; its knotty, complex, stunning compositions have not been dulled by the passing of time, and in context, seem even more radical. The two albums leading up to Bitte Orca were a from-memory recreation of a Black Flag album (2007’s Rise Above), and a “glitch opera” about Eagles frontman Don Henley (2005’s The Getty Address). So when Bitte Orca came out, with its complex choral arrangements, and its deconstructed avant-pop and R&B, it felt like a shock to the system, a left-field masterpiece from out of nowhere. Black feminist punk band Big Joanie’s Back Home references the search for a place to call home. Stephanie Phillips, the band’s singer and guitarist, shared, “We were really ruminating on the idea of a home and what it means. It’s about the different ideas of home, whether that’s here in the UK, back in Africa or the Caribbean, or a place that doesn’t really exist; it’s neither here nor there.”

The band tapped artist Angelica Ellis for the album’s artwork, an embroidered image of drummer Chardine Taylor-Stone’s nephew, a style of art common in Caribbean homes post-Windrush that were a callback to the homes they left behind.

In Back Home, the band pieces together sounds ranging from intense guitars to emotive strings that fully illustrate their range as artists. Limited to 750 copies, the VMP exclusive edition of Big Joanie's Back Home is pressed on 1LP Opaque Yellow vinyl at Independent Record Pressing. The record will arrive in a single direct-to-board, foil stamped and numbered jacket with lyrics and credits printed on the inner sleeve, along with a download code.
