Back in 2011 when I was tentatively looking for a second release for my fledging record label Clay Pipe Music, I stumbled upon a mysterious MySpace page by a group called ‘Tyneham House’, the page was decorated with artwork by Rena Gardiner (who was unknown to me at that time) and the music was an otherworldly mix of field recordings, Mellotron and acoustic guitar. It turned out that Tyneham was promised to Glen Johnson’s Second Language label, so I offered to do the artwork, and in January 2012 the two labels co-released it on tape and CD in a cardboard box with a handmade booklet of my illustrations.

In 2016 Clay Pipe reissued it on 10” vinyl, in an edition of just 300, which has since become sort after. The new 2023 pressing is on blue and transparent marbled vinyl, with a reverse board cover and inner sleeve, and the booklet of illustrations has been given a complete redesign. Frances Castle 2023

The pastoral, wistful yet ineffably disquieting music of Tyneham House is made by artists who wish to remain anonymous here, save for their eponymous title. The musicians are happy, however, to let it be known that these recordings have been around for some years (many of them complied from old cassettes) and that they take inspiration from the 1960s/’70s/’80s work of the Children’s Film Foundation – a body who really ought to have made a film about this mysterious West Country curio. At least now we have its endlessly poignant soundtrack.

The small village of Tyneham, on the beautiful Isle of Purbeck, in Dorset, was once a thriving little community – that is until the British Government requisitioned it for training manoeuvres and other ‘strategic purposes’ in the run up to Wwii. This was supposed to be a temporary measure, but the area remained in military possession long after hostilities had ceased, causing distress among former inhabitants, many of whom were farmed out to prefabs in nearby Wareham and Swanage.

Tyneham was characterised by its red telephone box, a tiny parade of shops – Post Office Row – and a grand country pile which stood about half a mile away from the village: Tyneham House. The army removed the building’s oak panelling and ornate decorative details and promptly set about using it for target practice. So great was the shame expressed locally about the damage inflicted upon one of Dorset’s grandest houses that the powers that be decided to grow a copse around the remains of the structure to give the impression that it was no longer there. Despite this, a substantial part of the structure remains intact, including its Saxon hall.

Land access around Tyneham was opened up in the 1970s, but admission to the house remains strictly verboten. Those who’ve been found around the premises, especially anyone wielding a camera, have felt the full weight of military trespass law. Tyneham today is regarded as a nature reserve by some – as a national embarrassment by others. It’s still a political hot potato, in Dorset at least.

The Obsessives, above all else, write the music that they want to listen to. Comprised of founding members Nick Bairatchnyi (guitar, bass, vox) and Jackson Mansfield (drums, guitar, keys), their sound has spent the last decade evolving through elements of DIY, grunge, alternative, and math to shape into something that feels the most uniquely authentic to their version of exciting noise. Bairatchnyi's lyrics emphasize the importance of songwriting's storytelling aspect, and what pours out of him has a rough edge of urgent specificity. Paired with a soundscape that manages to both punch in its efficacy and shimmer in its intricacy, the sonic chemistry between these two high school friends delivers unmatched, easygoing musicality. Their arrival took shape through weekender basement shows in Bethesda and the labyrinthine DIY community in Arlington and D.C. before finally making their move to Philadelphia to hit with cornerstone groups like Modern Baseball, ultimately solidifying their place in the scene. Joined by Ben Kaunitz (guitar, bass) and Coby Haynes (drums, percussion) in 2018, the live lineup has evolved from a sonic rough-and-tumble to a fully collaborative space, encouraging a new era of thematic cohesion. After opening up the creative dialogue beyond just a duo, the band's sound has been able to make a mature tonal shift in style and form. Following the release of 2017's The Obsessives (Lame-O Records), the band has spent a lot of time compartmentalizing and re-shaping their projects. The difference between being 18 and 24 isn't the world, but at the same time _ it is. The Obsessives' sound has grown up with and around them, and is ultra-specific to what they feel are various catalytic experiences. The determinant factor that sets 2015's Heck No Nancy (Near Mint Records) apart from 2021's forthcoming release under producer Will Yip (Memory Music) is an entire set of lives that's been lived. The best part is _ they dig it as much as you will.

Divorcer formed in late 2016 in a booth at Duffin's Donuts in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada and that's perfect, because just like a donut, Divorcer is a treat. And after two cassettes—Debt Jubilee (2019) and Nutty Grotto (2022)—the band has made a delicious donut of its own with Espionage, their vinyl debut. Arty and aurally reminiscent of the Raincoats, Rose Mercie, Young Marble Giants, Marine Girls, and Dolly Mixture, Espionage’s four playful tracks swell with unanticipated changes that leave the listener wondering if this is still the same song, or even the same band. But the ingredients are there, they're just mixed up a little differently each time. There's call-and-response singing, whisper singing, singing in rounds. All four band members sing, and the straightforward instrumentation all works to serve the lyrics. Frank, funny, sharp, and skewering, the lyrics are a highlight, and Divorcer knows how to emphasize them. Layering lush melodies over "crying on the outside, crying on the inside" wryly increases the melodrama of the third track, "Crying." The final track, "Leech," is the most rocking of the bunch. "He's a leech, and he's sucking me dry, dry dry," goes the refrain, leading the listener to this expertly honed barb of a line: "You're so quick to point a finger (he's a leech) / Let me get you a mirror (he's a leech) / If you look a little closer (oh he's a leech) / the monster will appear (he's a leech)." Divorcer has a lot to say, some of it serious. But while they're stuck here in this weird, messed-up world, they're going to have some fun—and take a bite out of it, too. fuzzy guitar riffs that linger in your head.

Ace’s 45th anniversary 7-inch selection continues this month by taking us back to our roots, and bringing you incredible previously unreleased alternate takes of two all-time classics of rockin’ 1950s rhythm & blues.

R&B lovers will need no introduction to either Roy Brown’s ‘Boogie At Midnight’ or Lloyd Price’s ‘Lawdy Miss Clawdy’, but these recently discovered ‘Take One’s put whole new perspectives on two proven classics. The fast and furious ‘Boogie’ makes the issued 1951 master sound like a lullaby in comparison, while ‘Clawdy’ has an alternate opening line that would have guaranteed no airplay would have been forthcoming back in 1952.

Both tracks are taken from new transfers of the original acetate and tape sources, and both play loud and proud. Each side of the 45 offers a representation of the original label design that would have been used, had they been issued at the time of recording.

No self-respecting R&B singles collector will want to be without a copy of this essential commemorative single, featuring two of the greatest names in 1950s black American music.

Following a collection of self-released internet mixtapes and albums as Saint Pepsi that garnered a cult internet following amongst the vaporwave community, Ryan DeRobertis signed to Carpark Records and changed the project’s name to Skylar Spence, cementing the legitimacy of his young recording career. For his Carpark Records debut in August 2014, Skylar Spence took a step away from the more genre-shuffling styles of his Internet releases to focus his skills on high-power pop. The title track of the “Fiona Coyne” 7-inch is an uplifting tribute to fantastical romance and the joyous dreams pop culture can provide. Mastermind Ryan DeRobertis lays down a funky guitar riff and bass line of Chic-quality to tease our senses before tickling us silly with the chorus’ ecstatic horns. “My love’s on the silver screen/ she’s always playing make believe,” sings the then 21-year-old songwriter, playing a bit of make-believe himself. The song, named after a certain graduate of Degrassi Community School, acts out the fantasy of dating a TV star and plays with the idea that music can be something of a catalyst for romance.

The b-side, “Fall Harder,” is a lovelorn hit about a somewhat unattainable beauty. “You’ve got me under your spell/ and baby, I couldn’t fall harder,” DeRobertis sings over an Orange Juice-worthy riff and electronic subtleties like the sound of a Galaga battle. For this 7-inch, DeRobertis wrote danceable love songs with a nostalgic aesthetic to the production “because I think nostalgia is inherently narcissistic and I’m currently very into the idea of exploring the connection between nostalgia and narcissism,” he says.

These two singles would later appear on his debut album, Prom King, which was met with widespread critical acclaim. The buzz led to international touring, transforming Skylar Spence from a home-recording project to a four-piece live band, sharing stages with Madeon, The Knocks, and several festival appearances. Long out-of-print, “Fiona Coyne/Fall Harder” is finally available again on blue vinyl.

The tape caught some attention in the underground, and connected Subvert with bands like Poison Idea, Final Conflict, THE Accused, Christ ON Parade, and eventually made their way into PUSHEAD’s top 100 of the 80’s. This 7” is the new remastered version of the Demo Tape and includes an additional Instrumental song “Noxious Tune” from the same session, which has never been released on vinyl until now. José Javier Castro (1965-2022) was a Peruvian artist and musician who emerged in the 1980s, and is known for being the leader, guitarist, and singer of the experimental rock group El Aire, as well as an emblematic figure of the Lima underground. He also developed, starting in the early 90s, various projects centered on electronic experimentation, and oriented towards ambient and cosmic music, both for soundtracks, sound installations, as well as for his own rock band, leaving an important archive of recordings unpublished. Melodía a Gianni Toti en dos partes [Melody for Gianni Toti in two parts] constitutes a first publication that seeks to disclose that other creative side of José Javier Castro, who was also an active promoter of the experimental music scene in Peru. José Javier Castro encountered the work of the Italian artist Gianni Toti as an active collaborator of the Túpac Amauta project, directed by Toti and produced at the Centro Internacional de Creación de Video [International Center for Video Creation] (CICV). In 1999, for the second part of the Túpac Amauta project, he was invited as a resident artist at the CICV, establishing a first-hand link with Toti, with whom he shared ideas regarding syntheatronic creation. The sound piece Melodía a Gianni Toti en dos partes was composed in 2021 and is inspired by Toti's various visions of music and aesthetics. This project led Castro to a long reflective process in search of a coherent definition of both the process and the aesthetics. It is a spontaneous and heartfelt evocation as a tribute and thanks to Toti.

Dernier Soir is one of the songs of the forthcoming LP, and it is now also available on a 7″ single, albeit in a slightly different version. It is a killer late ’70s pop punk hit that deserves to have its own single. If Dernier Soir is diagnostic of the quality of the new LP, better set some money aside for an immediate purchase.
