Born from the Tokyo Rockers scene (1978-79), which heralded the dawn of the Japanese punk rock scene, Gozira Records released the singles compilation album "Gozira Special Dinner" in 1983. This album is now being reissued after 41 years! It was remastered using the master tapes from the first CD release. Additionally, the original A1-size inner sleeve has been faithfully reproduced.

The album features Mirrors, a pioneering Japanese punk band formed in 1977 by Hiroshi Higo, who also played in the band 3/3 with members of Friction. It also includes rare solo singles from a member of Friction, tracks by Flesh featuring Kan Takagi (who later became a significant figure in the early days of Japanese hip-hop with Major Force), and songs by Maria 023, a band formed in 1978 by AUTO-MOD's charismatic Genet and Non Band's Non, which later included members Teiyu and OTO of Jagatara. This compilation is a treasure trove of influential tracks from the early days of Japanese punk rock scene.

Not much has been written written about the conceptual hardcore band inspired by and named after a 9th century antisocial loner monk-poet of China’s Tang dynasty. Han-shan [the band] existed from 1991 to ‘93 in California. Their lyrics covered themes of solitude, mystery, poverty, and discord, directly inspired by the verses of the titular poet. Han-shan’s music was psychopathic, with blood-curdling vocals, and messy but powerful, in the vein of Void, Siege or Septic Death. The band played to the absolute limits of their physical ability and then some, with a sound that complemented their West Coast contemporaries—bands like Heroin, Mohinder, Second Story Window, Antioch Arrow and Angel Hair. Recorded in San Diego by Matt Anderson in late 1993 and originally released posthumously in early 1994 on the tiny Soledad record label, Hans-shan’s eight song seven inch EP came packaged in a manila envelope, each one hand-printed with a woodcut block and roller, with the art and insert referencing both the poet and Tang dynasty China. LG Records has carefully reproduced this cover art and returned to the original multitrack tape. Tim Green has remixed the recording at Louder Studios for a significantly more powerful, and yes, Louder, 12” 45rpm release. Members of Han-shan had previously been in Suckerpunch, Brain Tourniquet, End of the Line, and John Henry West; and went on to play in Behead The Prophet Nlsl, Solid Gold, Drunk Horse, Astral, Tight Bro’s from Way Back When, Sex/Vid, Very Paranoia, Low Plateau and Nudity. Furious, relentless, maybe less starry-eyed but at the same time profound, celestial and poetic, London concrete-punks Qlowski are back with ‘The Wound’ their second album on Maple Death & Feel It Records, a record that feels like the culmination of their lives, politics and sense of community. Still led by the dual-force of Mickey and Cecilia, Qlowski has expanded into a collective with the addition of Christian, Lucy and James, creating a sense of urgency and sweeping palette that was only hinted at on their debut ‘Quale Futuro?’.

Dream-punk, propulsive rhythms, oblique kiwi-pop, dark punk are still part of their vocabulary but the band smashes borders with kosmische soundscapes, art-pop ballads, industrial beats and funked-up low-thud. Sonically impeccable, loaded with ear candy, the album was recorded in Dublin at Sonic Studios by Daniel Fox (Gilla Band) one of today’s most innovative producers and ‘The Wound’ ebbs and flows through syncopated grooves, abstraction and bliss, a work of contrast, dark-soft-heavy full cycle but mainly euphoric. The addition of drum pads, drum machines, electronics, analog pedals and field recordings are part of this process, it almost feels like a punk album for the club culture, where bodies and sweat are just one gear in bringing a community together.

Full of staples ‘Desire’ mixes anarcho-punk bleakness with New Order-ish ecstasy and Mickey’s commanding vocal presence, ‘Surrender’ almost feels like the Cure on a Martin Hannett diet of pills and reverb chambers, ‘It May Change’ and ‘Mastering The Motions’ dance on the cusp of angular funk, all wiry and bouncy recalling Pylon but also euro icons Kleenex. ‘Praxis’ and ‘Stronger Than’ show how far Qlowski has come, dream-pop ballads that shine though analog synths (Siel Orchestra, Juno) and Ceci’s heavenly delivery.

Post-punk (originally called new musick) is a broad musical genre that emerged in 1977 in the wake of punk rock. Post-punk musicians moved away from punk's traditional elements and raw simplicity, adopting instead a broader, more experimental approach that included a variety of avant-garde sensibilities and non-rock influences.

Here we go again with two other enthralling volume in the series. The Postcards saga continues, discovering lesser known - but no less significant - names from the post-punk, new wave and d.i.y. scenes around the UK and the US. Groups whose recording career was minimal and stopped, in 90% of cases, at the first and only 45 rpm (which is the cream of the crop here). Number 4 brings together five seven-inches, here presented in their entirety, released between 1979 and 1981 by cultish british bands. This gatefold 2xLP is a combination of the group’s only two albums, consisting of one LP of Five Tread cuts plus “Cecil Likes to Dance” a never-before-released live recording from Thistle Hall (1984) and the full 1985 LP Future Jaw-Clap. This material that has been unavailable since mid-1980s. It is well documented that in the early ‘80’s New Zealand was awash with adventurous new music. Though sharing the kind of happy isolation and the DIY ethic with contemporaneous outfits like Flying Nun, South Indies and Xpressway, one band cut a decidedly different path. The Primitive Art Group, formed in Wellington, devoted itself to collective improvisation coming out of a jazz tradition. With the line-up of Anthony Donaldson (drums), David Donaldson (bass), Neil Duncan (saxes), Stuart Porter (saxes), David Watson (guitar), and originally with Pam Grey (on cello), the group’s relatively brief existence left a lasting impression on the New Zealand’s free music scene. Musically, there was no precedent in New Zealand for their combination of noise, collective playing and compositional freedom. Gary Steel from the local music rag TOM, wrote “The first time I saw the Primitive Art Group they blew my tiny mind… Great sheets of architectural noise coming at you from the stage. Where else would you see free music in New Zealand in the early 80s? You just didn't.” The band’s five-year lifespan was non-stop activity: rehearsing, touring, the creation of Braille Records (their own record label which released ten LPs), dance and theater work, appearances at music festivals, and hosting two hugely influential national festivals of improvisation at Thistle Hall, Wellington. In 1984, Primitive Art Group spent a week making their first recording, an ambitious double LP, Five Tread (Braille 001) which had only a single pressing and sold-out locally. One year later they were back in the studio making their second album, Future Jaw-Clap (Braille 002). This outing contained tighter pieces, as the band widened its repertoire with nods to broader influences and antecedents. In 1986, The Primitive Art Group gave their last concert at the Wellington Town Hall, just a half mile from Rawa House and the legendary Thistle Hall where their first shows had taken place. The band’s Braille Records’ recordings have never been released outside of New Zealand, nor have ever been available digitally. As Thurston Moore writes, “these are magic time capsule, lost-n-found recordings, previously shared only by deep-diving record collector aesthetes”. The group’s brief tenure has continued to inspire new generations of improvisers, but nothing has ever quite matched the visceral blast of the Primitive Art Group’s arrival on the scene. Every member of the group has carried on doing creative work at the highest levels: scoring films, making art, mentoring, organizing, touring and always playing.
