Seminal Afro-dub album "Dr. Afrodub" by Ghanaian Ekowmania aka Ekow Alabi Savage. The drummer, percussionist and singer who's played with Jimi Tenor & Kabukabu for more than 20 years explores the fields of classic Roots Reggae, Afro and Dub as well as uptempo modern African rhythms and ballads. This Jimi Tenor produced album is an expansion of Ekowmania's tribute song to Kwame Nkrumah (which is also released as 7" with different versions) and Tenor's electronic loops, which they developed into a full album in guitar player Lauri Kallio's country side studio in Kiikala, Finland. The album kicks off with a very heavy, club-ready and UK reggae-styled album mix of "Kwame Nkrumah", following up with 200% intensity on the voodooesque rhythm explosions of "Twerk Your Mind", then taking a 360 degree turn with the smoothness and laidback vibes of "Kiikala Reggae". Throughout its 9 cuts "Dr. Afrodub" always approach the balance of beautiful song writing and intensity in rhythm and melody, visiting the excellent and classically crafted 70's Roots tune "Dub Souljah", the upfront & tempo-fueled "Lagos Heavy" and ending with DJ Sotofett's mix of the albums ballad "Me Know". The Midnight Rock label was home to some of the greatest productions of the era, and like any smart Jamaican producer, label owner Nkrumah Jah Thomas worked his rhythms hard, using them to create scores of records by dozens of artists.

Thomas came up just at the right time, and his breakthrough recordings were made at the finest studios, using the finest musicians: often they were recorded at Channel One and used the Roots Radics. And sometimes the voicings that he created were released, but still more languished in the vaults. Caught on multi-track tape, but never released.

That was the fate of a session that he recorded with Sugar Minott. The singer – known in the UK for his monster hit ‘Good Thing Going’ – had made his name in the vocal group The African Brothers, before working as a soloist for Coxsone Dodd at Studio One, where he became a pioneer of the dancehall, his voice riding over many of Dodd’s greatest rhythms to create timeless music.

Thomas has worked hard in creating sharp new mixes from his sessions with Minott, and this single – a plea against gun violence as apt today as when it was put down on tape – is the first fruits of that work. A fantastic Radics rhythm with an exceptional vocal and brand new dub by Jah Thomas and Rory on the flip.

Being Punk and Hippie at the same time. Les Rythmes Ruban experiment with the idea by doing absolutely what they want, but with love. Moving forward with enthusiastic trial and error has the double advantage of enjoying the scenery and easily crossing paths with people we love. The first encounter between Marina P and Blundetto took place in 2014 with their collaboration on the track "Last Broken Bones" from the album "World Of". Marina, who had just created her label Homeys Records, continues to multiply experiences on stage and in the studio, solo or always well accompanied (Mungo's Hi-Fi, Stand High Patrol, Woman Hi-Fi with Biga*Ranx, Jahtari...). But Marina's spectrum of influences goes far beyond reggae, drawing from the jazz sound of her parent's record player, her cello practice, and the discovery of great voices of Soul and Jazz like Nina Simone, Billie Holiday, Chet Baker... The track "Eugenio", written and composed by Marina, embodies all of this; it belongs to no particular style. It's primarily the evident essence of the song, its lyrics, and its emotion that inspired Blundetto to "set it to music", available to your ears in two different arrangements.

Influenced by US Soul and the early Reggae and Rocksteady sounds from Jamaica, aDUBta, a producer and musician from Bavaria, Germany, linked up with Marcus I, a Southern France notable songwriter and singer in the Roots-Reggae scene, to create a collection of work inspired by the Studio One sounds of the 1960s. Following their debut 'cut A Wire Showcase' (Hornin' Sounds Records, France - 2023), 'Marcus I meets aDUBta' kick off their next set of releases with this uplifting, flying-cymbal-style 7-inch that's an automatic vibe setter and head nodder. Featuring a minimalist riddim 'Version' on the B-side, DJs, you know you'll need doubles! After nearly 20 years as a drummer for various Reggae bands, aDUBta has recently dedicated himself entirely to the sound of '60s to early '80s Reggae. Gaining international attention as a producer with his debut album, 'Sounds From The Attic,' (released in 2023 through Oneness Records), aDUBta and musical collaborator Mauricio-Joran Ceseña (The Black Oak Roots Allstars) went back at it, focused on recording a collection of riddim instrumentals at aDUBta's Attic Roots Studio. Then, in February 2024, Marcus I joined aDUBta in Germany to write and record vocals and harmonies, deeply showcasing his exceptional songwriting and distinctive voice, which has resonated with every Roots-Reggae fan. Composed in the aftermath of family tragedy, NY Graffiti’s Burden is an album full of peace anthems, psalms, dirges, and confessionals. In the pursuit of consolation, the tectonics of techno, dub, and post-club aesthetics are pushed past their margins onto new emotional plateaus.

Like the series of EP’s that NY Graffiti has released in recent years – including a split with Subtext affiliate UCC Harlo – Burden is an amalgam of dub-informed club music, acoustic emulations, and doom-scroll sourced social media chatter, filtered through the artist’s unique sonic palette that has developed over years on the fringes of New York’s contemporary club scene.

From the largely-improvised opener (and closer) “Approximation”, to the discord of the steppa-inflected track “98 Prayers”, and the dystopian ambiance of “Reach” (evoking early Hype Williams), Burden constantly reconfigures itself in search of catharsis. The early Reggae sound that came out of Jamaica between the years 1968 and 1971 became the soundtrack to the skinhead movement in the UK. Not only was the music embraced but also the dress style of the Jamaican Rude Boys.

The skinhead style started around 1968 and by the following year 1969, had become the style and fashion of the British teenagers. The uniform of the skinheads consisted of boots, braces, button down shirts and jeans and the upbeat reggae sounds seemed to match the style perfectly. The tempo of the music in Jamaica had previously slowed down from the more up tempo beat of Ska to the calmer pace of beat called Rock Steady. While far from a household name in reggae, Judah Eskender Tafari cultivated a loyal fanbase and respectable catalogue during his recording career. The Studio One single, "Rastafari Tell You" sits at the top of a small set of deep cuts he recorded for Coxson Dodd's famed studio starting in 1978. These have continued to find a place at roots reggae sound systems and DJ rub-a-dub parties after nearly five decades. The earnest lyrics and spiritual mission of these early recordings would define Judah's entire career, extending through the decades to "Great Escape", a new Daptone 45 produced by label stalwart Victor Axelrod. The song alludes to the Old Testament in a vision of mankind gone astray, trying to escape the confines of Earth for salvation. Axelrod provides a lush roots backdrop against which Eskender shines in a way we haven't heard in years.
