Get ready to unleash another fine release on BCSM Records. We present you a powerful tune
and version by singer Christine Salem from Reunion Islands and danish dub wizard Dub Across Borders (DAB) ,
combining the best of world music and dubwise business.

The characteristic, deep and powerful voice of Christine Salem first made its way to
the speakers in the Dub Across Borders studio one winter night in 2018. Through a musical
friendship in Brazil, DAB was presented with a recording of one of Salem’s live concerts.
Instantly, the stripped down vocal/percussion style arrangements of the songs resonated with a
raw authenticity and nerve which sparked inspiration. Shortly after, with a sort of ‘bootleg-approach’,
DAB was found reworking the song “Kadjembawe” into a heavy dub version, adding several other instruments
like, organ, bass, guitars, etc. Some years later when the rework had gone rounds with friends and alike,
it was presented to the Swiss bass clarinet virtuous Eloi Cálame.
From his studio in Switzerland he then transcribed and recorded the horn arrangements
with trumpeteer Jaronas Hoehener. After many e-mails with Christine and her management,
the song being reborn into its dubby self. Then it was presented to Tino from BCSM who took charge
in the endeavour to present it to the world.

The song 'Kadjembawe'' is an ancient incantation to connect and pay hommage to our ancenstors.

The earliest musical memories of young Prince Istari are of his mother beautifying the home with her piano playing. She would repeatedly play the tranquil pieces of Erik Satie. Skipping school and sitting in the sun, young Prince would listen to these catchy, calm compositions. In the first week of 2024, the older Prince Istari rediscovered himself and found a box containing his mother's old sheet music. He transferred them to his computer and began spinning dub versions from them. It became a tapestry. As his mother used to say: "To weave a net, one must first spin." The form of the pieces dictated the direction each would take. The heavy dub transforms here into a light weightiness until it dissolves into a pure piano piece accompanied by a synthesizer. However, the last piece is much older, from the time when Prince was still known as Istari Lasterfahrer. The ending includes a distorted recording of Huberta, Prince's mother, playing a Gnossienne by Satie. At the end, she turns the sheet music, and the record can be turned back to the beginning. In the essence of its material, this record rejects the Loudness War. The originality of the compositions guided the dub within their tracks, thereby imparting to each a form descriptive of its essence.

Dennis Bovell is a producer, musician, and engineer who is an indispensable part of the history of British reggae. In 2008, P Vine compiled a collection of Dennis' master recordings under the title "Rebirth of British Reggae" and released it on vinyl for the first time. Marie Pierre's version of the Young Rascals' classic "Groovin'," which has been covered by numerous musicians including Marvin Gaye and Aretha Franklin, was released as a 7-inch single on P-vine in 2021 and sold out immediately. A slice of deep ethereal roots and dub from Summer Records label boss Keith "Jerry" Brown circa 1978.

Hailing from Trenchtown, Jerry was an original member of the Rocksteady group "The Jamaicans" before migrating to Toronto. He set up Summer Records in the basement of his suburban home in Malton near the airport, a subterranean music sanctuary for the likes of Prince Jammy, Jackie Mittoo, Johnny Osbourne and Willi Williams.

Dreadlock Lady features Jerry's yearning falsetto over a hazy instrumental courtesy of the Ishan Band and showcasing horns-man Fitty's transcendent flute and Sax solos. The Dub enters even more surreal territory with Jerry at the controls putting the tape machine through its paces, reminiscent of wilder outings at Wackies Studio.

He was from Trinidad but Byron Lee did bring him come to Jamaica as an organist but he started playing guitar and the rest is history! We should call him rock steady… it’s Lyn Taitt as he was the man! He played lead guitar and ska at the same time…” Bunny Lee

As the frantic, frenetic pace of ska finally let up in 1966 the cool, cool sound of rock steady came to the fore. This languid, soulful music was the complete musical antithesis of its more famous antecedent and the gentle guitar of Lyn Taitt would forever define the sound of rock steady.

Trinidadian Nerlyn ‘Lyn’ Taitt had been given a contract by Byron Lee to travel to Jamaica to play at the Independence celebrations in 1962 but fell in love with Jamaica and decided to stay joining The Sheiks and then The Cavaliers before forming Lyn Taitt & The Comets. Lyn also recorded as a guest guitarist with The Skatalites before Lyn Taitt & The Jets came together in 1966.

The rock steady beat was slower, more measured and the emphasis was placed on the bass. It no longer gave equal emphasis to every beat but, instead, played a repeated pattern that syncopated the rhythm. The

rhythmic focus shifted to the core of the music to the bass and the drums where it has remained ever since.

“For that tempo the tempo is very slow with the bass and guitar line playing the same thing. You used to use two guitars. Hux Brown and myself or another guitarist and myself. And it was very slow but with a definite bass line going straight through the song…” Lyn Taitt

Lyn Taitt & The Jets were soon in such great demand that they would often play up to five sessions a day for as many different producers but they were not the only rock steady band. When the Skatalites had broken up in 1965 Jackie Mittoo formed Studio One’s house band The Soul Brothers (who soon became The Soul Vendors) and Tommy McCook decided to work with Duke Reid at Treasure Isle studio with The Supersonics. Bobby Aitken’s Carib Beats eschewed subtlety for drive but together these musicians were responsible for establishing the rules of rock steady music.

Their gentle approach allowed vocalists such as Alton Ellis, Ken Boothe and Desmond Dekker and harmony groups including The Techniques, The Melodians, The Uniques and The Paragons and many, many more to demonstrate their prowess.

Rock steady only lasted for a brief period, from 1966 to 1968, but its significance to the subsequent development of Jamaican music is incalculable and it would go on to shape each successive musical movement over the next four decades. Deejays, dub, digital and dance hall all stepped to the tune and pace of rhythms whose

origins were grounded in the rock steady beat and it is impossible to ever overstate its importance... or its beauty.

Kazufumi Kodama is a Japanese trumpet player and producer for some of Japan's earliest and most influential dub groups. His claim to fame is the work he did with the group Mute Beat in the late 80s, many articles citing this group as the very first dub group to exist in Japan. Even if this isn't true, he certainly pushed the genre to its most popular in the country. His current band "Kodama And The Dub Station Band" released their first cover album "Tomoshibi" in 2023 from P-vine, and now some finest songs are released on 7inch ep! If one band could be cited for the emergence of Ska music, that band would be the Skatalites.

Formed around June 1965 and built around the many musicians that had honed their craft at the Alpha Boys School in Kingston, Jamaica. The early line up consisted of Don Drummond (Trombone), Roland Alphonso (Tenor Saxophone), Tommy McCook (Tenor Saxophone), Johnny ’Dizzy’ Moore (Trumpet), Lester Sterling (Alto Saxophone), Jerome ’Jah Jerry’ Hines (Guitar), Jackie Mittoo (Piano), Llyod Brevett (Bass) and Llyod Knibbs (Drums).

Named originally The Satellites after the big news of the day, the Soviet space satellite. They became The Skatalites when band member Tommy McCook introduced a play on the characteristic ‘Ska’ sound, made by the guitar when following the’ after beat’ of the music.The group had already cut its musical teeth by playing under various guises around the Jamaican island in numerous ‘hotel bands’. When the big Sound System operators Sir Coxsane Dodd, Duke Reid and King Edwards needed new material to play out with and their usual source of the material, American R & B records were drying up. They turned to this pool of musicians to back up their main singers of the day. Delroy Wilson, Alton Ellis and Lord Creator to name but a few. Also to cut the many instrumental tracks they needed usually under the tutor ledge of Don Drummond, official band leader and main musical director. Their knowledge of the old mento tunes and an understanding of Jazz and R&B music somehow blended to make this musical sound that was to dominate the island from the early 60’s up until around 1966 when the sound would slow down to what we now know as Rocksteady.

The time span of the Skatalites career considering their output of litually 100’s of sides of music, was a relatively short one of just over two years. We have delved into the vaults of Wirl Records and have selected some tunes that show the dexterity of the band and what great sounds this group of musicians were capable of producing and the high quality they maintained. They recorded before they were named as a collective The Skatalites, when personal and financial problems became an issue the band split into two halves. Jackie Mittoo and Roland Alfonso going on to form The Soul Brothers band for Coxsone Dodd. Tommy McCook moving over to work with Duke Reid as musical director. Sadly Don Drummond suffering for years from depression would see his career cut short ending in Belle Vue hospital in 1969.

But while together they cut some of the finest Ska Sounds to be found on record. We hope you enjoy this set as much as we have in putting it together. So stand Up, Listen Hard and do the Ska......

Fikir Amlak and Akashic Records met Crucial Rob during the "Serious Time" remix challenge in 2020. Out of over 200 entrants, Rob's mixes rose to the top and he won the contest.

The bredrin continued working together - reasoning, recording and performing live shows. Their next release was "Middle Pillar" which came out as a Green King Cuts 7" polyvinyl.

That release did very well and we decided to build a full album focused on the theme of Alchemy. Eventually this turned into a 15-track album with the first 10 tracks being pressed to an LP!

The Bandcamp / Digital album has 5 extra tracks that are not on the vinyl LP, including Dreadstone and Truth Seeker with dubs, plus a beautiful acoustic version of Black Sun.

While all of the parties have released plenty of music, this is the first LP for Akashic Records, Fikir Amlak and Crucial Rob. The Black Sun LP ships for June 28th release date, pre-orders get two tracks right away - Black Sun and Black Dub!

The artwork on this album comes from Ras Amlak. Before Zero Records helped with the layout and engineering support.

Kazufumi Kodama is a Japanese trumpet player and producer for some of Japan's earliest and most influential dub groups. His claim to fame is the work he did with the group Mute Beat in the late 80s, many articles citing this group as the very first dub group to exist in Japan. Even if this isn't true, he certainly pushed the genre to its most popular in the country. His current band "Kodama And The Dub Station Band" released their first cover album "Tomoshibi" in 2023 from P-vine, and now some finest songs are released on 7inch ep! A-sider "Pleased" is a dancefloor ready slice of cold wave influenced dub that combines some icy synths with a monstrous bassline to devastating effect. Treading a similar path to other musical adventurers in the synth dub realm such as Froid Dub but with added steppers pressure.

Flip it over for the more instrumental post-punk influenced delights of 'Satisfied.' Formed in 1989, Hepcat is a musical group that look too Jamaican, American Soul, Jazz, and Latin music from the the 1960’s and 1970’s to influence their music feast of Ska, Rocksteady, and Reggae. With a focus on highlighting soulful vocal harmonies, intoxicating rhythms, with rich and clever horn arrangements, Hepcat has been a unique and refreshing musical addition to the California music scene. The Group is composed of vocalists Gregory Lee and Alex Desert, keyboardists/vocalist Deston Berry, guitarist Lina Trujillo, saxophonists Efren Santana, trumpeter Kincaid Smith and drummer Greg Narvas. Hepcat has released 4 successful albums, 1993s Out of Nowhere on New York based record label Moon Ska Records; 1996's Scientific on Los Angeles based BYO Records; 1998’s Right On Time and 2000’s Push N' Shove on Los Angeles based Hellcat/Epitaph Records. Hepcat has hypnotized audiences all around the world and were often the first to bring their unique take on Ska, Rocksteady, and Reggae to audiences of other musical genres. Hepcat has shared audiences and stages with the likes of The Allman Brothers, Taj Mahal, Ben Harper, Public Enemy, and many, many more. The band would be the first to tell you that the greatest reward has been being able to play with the very people who initially inspired them to play music as a group, from the Skatalites to Toot’s and the Maytals, whom they have enjoyed as fans.

Joan Reggae Drummer, based in the region of Catalonia in Spain, is a great lover of Jamaican music, at a very young age he began to be so passionate about drums that he created his first musical projects, among them, the band that was a turning point was The Pepper Pots. With 6 albums already released and several tours in Europe, UK, Japan, USA & Czech Republic , Joan has opened for internationally artists such as Jimmy Cliff, Kymani Marley, Laurel Aitken, Derrick Morgan, Ticken Jahfakoli or The Pioneers among others. He performed at major festivals such as Summerjam Reggae Festival (Germany), Rototom Sunsplash (Italy), Primavera Sound (bcn), Rock For People (Czech Republic) or Sxsw (Austin, Usa).

Joan as a drummer has also worked with a lot of top international soul artists such as Curtis Mayfield's legendary band The Impressions, Eli "Paperboy" Reed, Maxine Brown, Binky Griptite from Daptone Records that has been in bands such as Antibalas, Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings, The Dap-Kings or The Mellomatics.

In 2020, after a time of musical hiatus due to the Covid, he began his more personal adventure, creating his own channel dedicated solely and exclusively to the world of drums in Reggae and Dub. Currently his Instagram channel has more than 34.000 followers and the content published has so much repercussion. First this major collaboration last year with Aston Barrett Jr for a special tribute to his uncle , Carlton Barrett (Bob Marley), one of Joan's favorite drummer. And at last all this work led him to record his first debut EP "dub Explosion" on the label Two Flames Records, a real explosion of DUB, where the common thread of the songs are drums.

JRD "dub Explosion" is a performance in the form of an EP, consisting of 4 instrumental Dub tracks with a totally different concept than what we are used to, since the songs were created from the drum beats.

Great musicians from different countries have participated in this EP: Guitar - Arturo Landaeta (Venezuela), Bass - Elie El Ossais (Australia), Keyboards - Ireneu Grosset (Spain), Nyahbinghi Drums - Maurici Bongo (Brazil), Trombone and Trumpet - Pablo Martín (Catalonia), Tenor sax - Tomy Muñoz (Catalonia), Bass - Miliu Llorach (Catalonia), Flute - Lluís Doménech (England), Bass - Joshua Jones (Jamaica), Keteh & Triangle - Aurel Cade (France), Trumpet - Glenn Holdaway (United States).

Finally, the production, mixing and dub was done by the musician and producer Ireneu Grosset, in the analogue studio of Dr. Dubwiser. It was quite an experience as the studio has a team very similar to what Jamaican producers had in the golden age of Reggae in the 70's.
