From 1968 through to the mid 1970’s the reggae beat began to slow down,some say due to the extreme heat hitting down onto Kingston Town and its surrounding enclaves. People needed something less strenuous to dance to. The Ska and Rocksteady Sounds (see 101 Orange Street Ks007) that rocked Jamaica previously, had now found a slower tempo and become more ‘Dread’ lyrically to suit the times. Reggae music has always moved within the social climate it found itself in and this set here, as we ‘Return To Orange Street’ was Roots Rock Reggae Time....

In 1997 Bad Manners released their 8th album of original studio material not including live recordings, comps and bootlegs. This album however, is none of the above. This is a compilation of demos, outtakes, remixes and rarities from the Bad Manners vaults.

A giant of the UK reggae scene since the late 70s and founder member of Matumbi. Bovell went on to produce a trail of classics by a genre-defying roster of artists, from Fela Kuti, dub poet Linton Kwesi Johnson, to The Slits and The Pop Group, while also recording as Blackbeard for EMI. If anyone in the reggae circles could be described as having their own sound it would have to be Mr Augustus Pablo, born Horace Swaby 1954 St Andrew Jamaica. He took the humble melodica a wind blown mouth keyboard and made it shine. His musical journey started one sunny day in 1969. Walking into Herman Chin- loy's Aquarius Records shop and on playing his melodica so impressed its owner that he was taken off to Randy's Studio 17, the very next day to cut his first record 'Iggy Iggy'. But it was his second tune under the guidance of Clive Chin again cut at Randy's, the seminal 'Java ' that put the young Augustus Pablo on the map. Clive Chin continued his work producing Pablo's debut album 'this IS Augustus Pablo' . An instrumental affair on which the neo-mystical ''Far East'' sound synonymous with Pablo's work emerged. Having worked with most of the top producers of the time,Lee Perry,Keith Hudson, Bunny Lee, Augustus decided to set up his own label "Rockers", named after his brothers sound system. Where many of his tunes would first be heard.The label came to define a new and exciting chapter in reggae history.Even when versioning acknowledged classic Studio One rhythms there was a precious maturity and depth to Pablo's productions that kept him at the top throughout the late 1970s and into the 1980s. His 'King Tubby meets the Rockers Uptown' set which featured some of these rhythms reworked; Swing Easy[Skanking Easy], Frozen Soul[Frozen Dub], stands as one of the true dub classic albums of any reggae education. Introducing Mark Anthony James, born on April 8, 1968, in Kingston city, Jamaica. A musical career spanning since 1983 when he adopted the stage name "Blacka Shines" and marked his entry into the studio with his first recording in 1987 amidst the digital reggae revolution. As the mid-'90s unfolded, a significant transformation took place, leading to a new chapter in his artistic identity. During this period, Mark James embraced the new name "Ultimate Shines," marking a conscious evolution in his artistic identity. Presented here are two 7"s from the earlier works of Mark James, featuring the 1989 recut of "Mob Him Kill Him" and the 1990 gem "Fraid A Prison," produced on Roland Gordon's imprints "Gorland" and "Gin". These releases were made possible through collaboration with Mark James and Richard McPherson.

It was around this time that Earl ‘Chinna’ Smith (of The Wailers and Soul Syndicate fame) approached the singer with the idea of re-making some Curtis Mayfield songs. ‘We The People Who Are Darker Than Blue’ was the first track generated during the meeting, followed after a couple of years by ‘Move On Up’. Devon Russell's birthplace and date are as much a mystery as the gaping holes in his recording career. He began with the Tartans, a mid-'60s rock steady vocal group comprised of himself, Prince Lincoln Thompson, Linbergh "Preps" Lewis and Cedric Myton; they disbanded after their 1967 hit "Dance All Night" (Federal Records). It is no mystery Jamaicans loved Motown soul, but this tribute was an epiphany on its own. With a crew comprised of eclectic master drummer Sly Dunbar, the album was completed at the Leggo Studios in Kingston, Jamaica with The Firehouse Crew on board. A mission accomplished ten years after the first foundation stone was laid. We recently heard Devon Russell ‘Move On Up’ and ‘We The People Who Are Darker Than Blue’ on the amazing Soul jazz compilation Disco Reggae Rockers, now you have the whole package !

Demolition Squad were lost in the realms of time. That was until Vinyl Fanatiks tracked down DJH, whose Dad owned the record shop Dance Force in Kings Lynn in the early 90s and started a record label in the back of it. DJH was 15 when he wrote his debut EP for the label – The Bass Project. That white label was selling for £300 a copy on Discogs and was recently re-released and quickly sold out on Vinyl Fanatiks (vfs006).

Off the back of the success of his EP, DJH wanted to track down the Demolition Squad and about a year later he found one of the band, who reached out to the other band members and everyone agreed… the time was right for a repress, 29 years after its original release.

With copies on Discogs reaching £60, this EP is a proper dose of UK hardcore.
