Repress of Mad Professor's 90s Japanese Mono Lovers remix masterpiece 7" S.S.W. Yoshiko Gotoh is also known as the vocalist of Denki Groove's 'Niji'. This is the first 7" release from '19, coupling the classic "First Light" with a superb dub mix of "Nameless Pierce", and is now being repressed in a limited edition of 300 copies Yoshiko Goshima was described as "a genius female singer with a five-octave voice" in the 1990s and early 2000s. She is a talented artist who is popular for her soulful singing that combines sweetness and toughness, and her 1999 hit single 'Open Up', which was used in a TV commercial, is also memorable. This 7" couples two rare remixes by the reggae dub scene's Mad Professor. The A-side features the 'Mad's Lovers Smooth Mix ver.' from the 'First Light Remixes' 12" single, which was released as a promo-only single in '97 and is now hard to find. A light dub number with dreamy synths and a stretched high-tone voice that feels great, the B-side is the "Mad's Summer Swim Mix" of "No Name Earrings" from the CD single "Swingin' the Swing", also released in '97. The facts behind Wayne Smith's "Under Mi Sleng Teng" is deliciously interesting. This instrumental changed the course of reggae music forever, churning out a plethora of digital riddims on its heels. Wayne Smith and Noel Davey originated the digital sound using a Casiotone Mt40 Keyboard, the riff being a sample from "Hang Onto Yourself" from David Bowie's Album Ziggy Stardust. Casio's employee Okuda Hiroko improved the riff for the Casiotone keyboard and the Jamaican youths tinkered creating an everlasting anthem under the masterful hands of Lloyd "Kings Jammy" James. This fresh and dynamic sound drew many outside of Jamaica to the genre of dancehall. At this time the 18 year old Wayne Smith had been on the reggae scene for some time voicing dubs for sound systems, even releasing two full albums by the time he was 14. Barrington Levy's dancehall hit "Under Mi Sensi" was his inspiration for "Under Mi Sleng Teng". The song's success heralded a historical milestone revolutionizing the sound of reggae and also the way in which dancehall songs were recorded. Up until that time the artist would approach the studio with a song taking along the lyrics and the instrumental, but the Sleng Teng hit created the role of the digital engineer who churned out sturdy computerized riddims and then invited artistes to voice. To date there are more than 500 titles using the Sleng Teng instrumental.

Wade "Jimmy" Dyce was an original member of Cultural Roots. He was a vocalist and played a key role in shaping the sound of the group. Cultural Roots emerged as a four-part harmony group for producer Donovan Germain in the late 1970s, releasing « Revolutionary Sounds » and « Mr Bossman » which counts among ‘Jah Shaka's favourite tunes’. Then they released « Hell A Go Pop », one of the Greensleeves label’s lesser-known classics. In the early 80's, Wade Dyce produced alone three songs at Chris Stanley's famous Music Mountain studio. Wade Dayce surrounds himself with the best musicians of the time, namely the Revolutionaries, but does not remember the exact formation apart from Sly Dunbar on drums and Bongo Herman on percussion. « Humble », « Money Mare » and « Hide & Seek » are three forgotten songs that can be described as killer roots from the middle of the 80s and which you can (re)discover again through this reissue on the original Moving On label. For this release, Jamwax worked with Parade Studio for this original and unique Disco 45 cover graphic creation. Today, Wade, now sixty-seven years old, is living in Salem, Massachusetts, where he graduated in 2010 as a mental-health specialist. Long live to the Cultural Roots !

The first time Ryuichi Sakamoto left Japan, he did not go to the United States or Europe - he went to Jamaica. It was 1978, YMO were about to release their debut album, but Sakamoto was in Kingston, invited to play synths for Japanese idol singer Teresa Noda at Dynamic Sound Studios in a band alongside Neville Hinds and none other than Rita Marley. Dennis Bovell is a producer, musician, and engineer who is an indispensable part of the history of British reggae. Never before in the history of Jamaica, which already occupies a unique place on the world map of song, its sound embraced by western popular music, has such an illustrious collection of singers and players been assembled. The album showcases 15 rocksteady classics in sparkling, deeply inspired new versions, recorded in the studio which also played host to album sessions of a certain Bob Marley. Under the musical direction of Ernest Ranglin, a guitarist of considerable renown not only on the reggae circuit, but also on the jazz scene, mixed by legendary engineer Errol Brown - in Duke Reid’s employ at the Treasure Isle studio in the sixties - and freshly arranged by Lynn Taitt.
