It documents the recordings being made for this very album at the Tuff Gong studios, Kingston, Jamaica in April 2008, telling the story of the original vocalists and musicians involved. Excerpts from an all star reunion concert staged in Kingston and older archive material complete the picture. Never before in the history of Jamaica, which already occupies a unique place on the world map of song, its sound embraced by western popular music, has such an illustrious collection of singers and players been assembled. The album showcases 15 rocksteady classics in sparkling, deeply inspired new versions, recorded in the studio which also played host to album sessions of a certain Bob Marley. Suns of Dub is a performing ensemble and production team, creating unique sound experiences that blend live instruments and dub influenced genres. The third solo album of the Italian producer is released eight years after his previous At Song Embassy, Papine, Kingston 6, an album/documentary recorded and filmed in Jamaica back in 2015. Over this eight-year span, Baldini intensively toured through Europe, United States and Latin America, and worked as a producer for artists like Mellow Mood, L.A.B., Forelock, Noiseshaper, Imperial Sound Army, Dubblestandart, and for well- established reggae labels like Pressure Sounds and Echo Beach. Differently from his previous albums, in which Baldini’s approach was tightly linked to the tradition of Jamaican dub (and where his works focused on re-editing and re-purposing materials coming from different sources), the starting point for the beat-making of In The Shell was the writing of original music, a blank page on which to develop every single track. This time, the core of the production and song-writing is rooted in the creation of instrumental tracks in the studio; only at a later stage did Baldini look on the outside, establishing the necessary connections and collaborations for the entire album. The shared element among the songs in the record is the use of a palette of ethnic sounds and samples, recorded and archived by Paolo Baldini himself during his various trips to Africa, and on which he later carried out his unique electronic production and post-production work – the distinctive feature of his musical aesthetics. The personal and family ties that led the Italian producer to visit Sub-Saharan Africa, and especially Senegal, granted him an exclusive observation standpoint on day-to-day contexts which are usually not accessible to those who don’t have a key to participate in the family life of these communities, and allowed him to respectfully use this advantage to record original and unique samples.

"Good music never dies!" - This was Diane Ellis' mantra when she set out to produce this, her first record, in 1979. She recalls hearing the Rose Royce classic Love Don't Live Here Anymore on the radio and instantly thinking it would make for a great reggae cover, immediately envisioning the sound she was looking for. Drafting in the legendary Boris Gardiner and vocalist Sharon Forrester they created this timeless version of a perennial classic - now available here in it's full extended discomix glory for the first time on 12" since it's original outing, and backed with hornsman cut placing Dean Fraser's sax front row center.

The record was made when Ellis was studio manager for the world-famous Tuff Gong studios, but wanted her outing as a record producer to be a totally independent venture - gaining the great Bob Marley & the TG team's blessings in the process. And so Aquarius Studio in Half Way Tree was where it was all laid-down. Diane credits the Legendary owner and pioneering producer, Herman Chin Loy, as also being of great help on the record, providing a guiding ear throughout the process.

Despite this the evident strength of this first production, Ellis would follow up with only one other production, Junior Tucker's cover of "One of the Poorest People" (this time one recorded at Tuff Gong studios, and releasing the 56 Hope Road subsidiery). While both records performed well on local radio and charts, Diane exited the music industry shortly after. Now 43 years later, Diane is overjoyed her production is having a comeback, saying that "the support and love felt during the project can never be replicated, and I give thanks to all who supported then and now".

Get ready to unleash another fine release on BCSM Records. We present you a powerful tune
and version by singer Christine Salem from Reunion Islands and danish dub wizard Dub Across Borders (DAB) ,
combining the best of world music and dubwise business.

The characteristic, deep and powerful voice of Christine Salem first made its way to
the speakers in the Dub Across Borders studio one winter night in 2018. Through a musical
friendship in Brazil, DAB was presented with a recording of one of Salem’s live concerts.
Instantly, the stripped down vocal/percussion style arrangements of the songs resonated with a
raw authenticity and nerve which sparked inspiration. Shortly after, with a sort of ‘bootleg-approach’,
DAB was found reworking the song “Kadjembawe” into a heavy dub version, adding several other instruments
like, organ, bass, guitars, etc. Some years later when the rework had gone rounds with friends and alike,
it was presented to the Swiss bass clarinet virtuous Eloi Cálame.
From his studio in Switzerland he then transcribed and recorded the horn arrangements
with trumpeteer Jaronas Hoehener. After many e-mails with Christine and her management,
the song being reborn into its dubby self. Then it was presented to Tino from BCSM who took charge
in the endeavour to present it to the world.

The song 'Kadjembawe'' is an ancient incantation to connect and pay hommage to our ancenstors.

The earliest musical memories of young Prince Istari are of his mother beautifying the home with her piano playing. She would repeatedly play the tranquil pieces of Erik Satie. Skipping school and sitting in the sun, young Prince would listen to these catchy, calm compositions. In the first week of 2024, the older Prince Istari rediscovered himself and found a box containing his mother's old sheet music. He transferred them to his computer and began spinning dub versions from them. It became a tapestry. As his mother used to say: "To weave a net, one must first spin." The form of the pieces dictated the direction each would take. The heavy dub transforms here into a light weightiness until it dissolves into a pure piano piece accompanied by a synthesizer. However, the last piece is much older, from the time when Prince was still known as Istari Lasterfahrer. The ending includes a distorted recording of Huberta, Prince's mother, playing a Gnossienne by Satie. At the end, she turns the sheet music, and the record can be turned back to the beginning. In the essence of its material, this record rejects the Loudness War. The originality of the compositions guided the dub within their tracks, thereby imparting to each a form descriptive of its essence.

Dennis Bovell is a producer, musician, and engineer who is an indispensable part of the history of British reggae. In 2008, P Vine compiled a collection of Dennis' master recordings under the title "Rebirth of British Reggae" and released it on vinyl for the first time. A slice of deep ethereal roots and dub from Summer Records label boss Keith "Jerry" Brown circa 1978.

Hailing from Trenchtown, Jerry was an original member of the Rocksteady group "The Jamaicans" before migrating to Toronto. He set up Summer Records in the basement of his suburban home in Malton near the airport, a subterranean music sanctuary for the likes of Prince Jammy, Jackie Mittoo, Johnny Osbourne and Willi Williams.

Dreadlock Lady features Jerry's yearning falsetto over a hazy instrumental courtesy of the Ishan Band and showcasing horns-man Fitty's transcendent flute and Sax solos. The Dub enters even more surreal territory with Jerry at the controls putting the tape machine through its paces, reminiscent of wilder outings at Wackies Studio.

Stay tuned for a short documentary on Jerry Brown featuring a wealth of archive and never before seen footage Co-directed by Chris Flanagan and Directed by Graeme Mathieson, produced by The National Film Board of Canada.

After the success of the two Laurel Aitken previous singles backed by Mighty Megatons band, on which the Spanish band completes old unfinished masters from the legendary 'HIgh Priest Of Reggae', Liquidator Music releases now the third 7”. On the A side is a cover from The Paragons ‘Only A Smile’ rock steady classic, an elegant interpretation by the genuine Godfather Of Ska from Jamaica who pays tribute to his beloved singer John Holt. On the B side we can find ‘On The Plantation', a Roots Rock Reggae killer tune. Laurel produced, along his career, some conscious numbers, even rastafari and panafricanist but, probably, this one is the most militant along his legacy. Mighty Megatons has done a great job showing their versatility among the classic Jamaican sounds. A must for any Reggae and Rocksteady collector.
