"Kamikaze Dub" by Prince Jammy is undoubtedly one of the most beloved albums by dub music lovers and a record to have in every self-respecting record collection. An album for any time of the day, or season, that never bores and indeed has aged very well always amazes and stimulates.

Re-released for Jamdung distributed exclusively by Kudos in limited edition LP from the original master tapes is available again at an affordable price, but hurry!

Jamaican Dub music first appeared in the mid-70s under the guidance of the creative master mind, King Tubby. By the late 70s, two of his top co-workers, Scientist and Prince Jammy were ready to branch out on their own, and they did.

Jammy's record came out first and that's why "Kamikaze Dub" (1979) is often cited as the album that raised the bar for good. After its release, many Jamaican producers aspired to create the same swirling psychedelic minimal sound that Jammy presented on these near perfect tracks. The musicianship on here is outstanding as well, with other Dub stars taking part such as Sly and Robbie on drums and bass, Augustus Pablo on keyboards, 'Deadly' Headley Bennett and Bobby Ellis on horns, as well as many others.

Scientist was only 20 years old when, working with fellow producer “Junjo” Lawes, came up with this stunner, a sinuous groove party with cartoonlike special effects (a lots of bongs and boings like pans hitting one another, blips and squeals that sound like a Pac-Man game). All the “song” titles are references to boxing (a motif that Scientist was obviously mining for all it was worth), and all are great individual bits of dub sound that cohere into a meaningful whole.

Tony Clarke is from Waterhouse, St. Andrew Jamaica. At the tender age of 10 he started following sound systems like Sir Mike The Musical Dragon with the great toaster Prince Ruff at the controls, and King Tubby's with the legendary U-Roy. Tony Clarke did his first recording in New York in 1971 at Hugh Hendricks recording studio called "Righteous Man" of which he played both bass and lead guitar. The band was later managed by the legendary band leader/trombonist Carlos Malcolm.
Tony Clarke decided to write the song “Going Home” to reference the roots of his music. In those days and even now good reggae music that was being recorded in the United States was not receiving the approbation from home because, in Jamaica they felt that the best reggae music could only come from and be created in Jamaica to substantiate the true feeling of the genre. So he decided to go back to Jamaica and record “Going Home” at Harry J Studio with Sylvan Morris as engineer.
The rhythm track was played by Lloyd Parks (Bass), Devon Richardson (Drum), Andy Bassford (Lead Guitar), Winston "Bo-Pee" Bowen (Rhythm Guitar), Franklyn "Bubbler" Waul (Keyboard), David Madden & Junior "Chico" Chin (Horns). He also recorded the cover version to “Hey Little Girl” originally done by Dee Clark. For this 12'' vinyl edition, the artwork was done with a vintage photo of Tony Clarke in front of his house at Waterhouse and extended liner notes on the back cover.

Re-issue of the album from 1982, recorded at Channel One & Harry J Studios with the Roots Radics and mixed at Channel One by Soldgie Hamilton!- "Look How Me Sexy" features nine Linval Thompson productions while the hit title track, produced by Henry "Junjo" Lawes, features one of the top reggae riddims of its time ("I'm Not Getting Crazy"), which is most known by Frankie Paul's "Worries In The Dance". While most of the album's ten tracks fit the lovers rock style of the era, it also includes the brooding "I Spy", with the riddim that was also used for Eek-A-Mouse's "Do You Remember". Furthermore dubbed out versions exsist of "Are You Ready", "Call Me", "Things Couldn't Be The Same" and "Holding On To My Girlfriend", all mixed by Scientist and released in the´Greensleeves Dub Classic series.

Linval Thompson was one of the first reggae singers of his era to move into self-production, he was known initially as a roots and culture artist, recording for various producers including Bunny "Striker" Lee before initiating his own studio sessions in 1978. In 1979, he mentored Henry "Junjo" Lawes as a producer, who in turn would become one of the most successful producers of the early 1980s, eclipsing Thompson in terms of output.

Among the most important full-length album works from one of reggae’s greatest singers, "Mr. Isaacs" shows the great Gregory Isaacs in the prime of his career in 1976. Better known for his love songs, Isaacs was equally adept at cultural themes. The tracks "Set The Captives Free" and "Slave Master" are among the most popular in his catalogue, the latter immortalized on film in the movie 'Rockers'. The track "Storm" became an early favourite in the dancehall, its rhythm track (aka the Storm riddim) is re-imagined no fewer than 75 times over the last 40 years. Originally released in 1983, this 12’’ from French-Haitian saxophone player Ulysse became cult – and extremely rare – within the French boogie niche. Both tracks wonderfully succeed in mixing political statements with dance-floor delights. Boogie-pop track “Naïma” seems to be a love song at first, but actually says the impossible resilience of a woman who has grown up in war. The heavy digital reggae song “Tiers Monde” warns us about the abandonment of Third World children. This maxi single, where each track is instantly followed by its instrumental version for greater DJ use, is an authentic snapshot of the Paris mixed club scene of the 1980s. Really hard to find for a very long time, it’s a great pleasure for Stima Records to make this music available again, in order to reach a well deserved new audience nearly 40 years later!

Praise Him

In September 1982, together with Trevor Davis, Paketo recorded and produced Praise Him, under the Child of God label. Recorded in just one day at Harry J Studio, the album mixes together roots reggae with a splash of lovers rock, singing of peace, love and unity, of enjoyment and upliftment, but also of the tribulations of ghetto life, of losing bredrins and friends. The mystical horns of Bobby Ellis and Headley Bennett carry us to a higher dimension, that same dimension from which Paketo wrote the lyrics to his spiritual poems, while the deep and overwhelming bass keeps us rooted to the ground.

Paketo Wilson

Born on October 24th 1956 in Kingston, Jamaica, Paketo Wilson grew up right in the heart of it all. His father, one of the best sign artists of the island, introduced him to the top musicians of the time, opening the doors to the world of music. His mother, on the other hand, wanted him to learn a trade. She sent him to learn dentistry close to home, unaware that every day Paketo would sneak in a bands room just a couple of steps from the dentist shop instead.

With no music teacher other than his own two eyes, Paketo would sit and watch. He soon came to understand each and every finger position, and the day he held his first guitar, fire came out of his fingertips. In 1972, at the age of 16, Paketo began his musical career with the New Vibration Band, playing in concerts all around the island, and quickly established himself as a solo artist through Daddy U-Roy’s King Stur Gav Sound System.

Following the release of Praise Him, Paketo travelled to Canada and performed at the Toronto Concert Hall, together with Leroy Sibbles, Errol Dunkley, Phyllis Dillon and Chester Miller. Soon enough his stage became international and in 1987 Paketo toured the world, playing in Germany, England, France, the Netherlands, Belgium and Austria. Paketo defines himself as a positive rastaman and never stops writing, playing, singing, but most of all smiling.

This is the classic sound from the Roots Radics band at Channel One with all tracks mixed by Prince Jammy and Overton "Scientist" Brown at King Tubby's studio. The 2CD-set is packaged in a deluxe six-panel hardcover digisleeve with a booklet glued in the package, and there are extended liner notes by reggae expert Harry Hawke.
