Las Mordidas were a short-lived Washington DC band that existed from Summer 1993 through Spring 1994. The band was comprised of four well-known veterans from the DC punk community: Chris Thomson (Circus Lupus / Monorchid / Ignition), Dug E. Bird (Beefeater / All-Scars / Fidelity Jones), Jon K. (Rain / Chrisbald 96 ), and Jerry Busher (Fugazi / All- Scars / Fidelity Jones). The Chris Thomson-fronted bands Circus Lupus and Monorchid that bookended Las Mordidas have received much more exposure, but Las Mordidas were no less audacious and uncategorizable. The familiar DC rhythm section of Bird and Busher here are augmented by the unhinged guitar talent of the relatively obscure Jon K. (Kirschten, younger brother of musician Chris “Bald” Kirschten). Jon was a revered, integral character in the DC scene and played in many well-known bands, yet he appeared on scant few recordings. To fans of the late ’80s and early ’90s DC scene, this record is an artifact that it arrives out of the blue and demands an ear. A Frankenstein collaboration that both defies and embodies the DC sound of the era. Recorded by Geoff Turner at Wgns in 1994 and Brendan Canty at Pirate House in 1993. Some cities just know how to produce bands by the bucketload. Take Detroit, for instance: we don't need to rattle through a full list or anything, but safe to say that if your town has given the world the likes of Motown, Derrick May and J Dilla - before we even start to think about The Stooges et al - then you could be forgiven for thinking there must be something in the water round those parts. So whaddya say? Should we get to know two more fine exponents of melodic wonder from the Motor City? Only seems fair. This split LP between citymates The Stools and Toeheads certainly isn't a letdown as far as the illustrious company of their forebears goes. In fact, it's a fast-paced thrill ride that oscillates between hip-shaking rock'n'roll swing and bone-shaking hardcore energy. You might already be familiar with The Stools thanks to their ludicrously addictive Feelin' Fine 7", which dropped via Drunken Sailor (hey, those guys sound familiar_) early in 2021. If you though that short EP was a good time, wait 'til you see what they've got in store here: right out of the gate, opener Dead Man's Ford smashes the devil-toed boogie of the MC5 at their slinkiest into the teeth-clenched intensity of Negative Approach (and that's a pretty decent John Brannon-style roar they deliver too). They maintain this quality and velocity across their side, which is brilliant. There's no let-up from Toeheads either - their side of this split sounds like someone revved up The Gun Club and aimed fireworks inside their exhaust. This is the sound you always knew you were working towards when you got into this rock'n'roll business; guitars blazing, lungs bursting, a wall of sound collapsing while we all dance in the debris. Does it sound like anything new? Fuck no, but that's not the point. Much like The Stools, there's nothing you can say about Toeheads that can't be summarised with the phrase 'total exhilaration'. 'What if Blitz hailed from Los Angeles and sang in Spanish' isn't a question you hear all that often. Fortunately, we don't need to ask - the answer is provided by Generacion Suicida's latest album, which rages and rattles in all the right places, drenched in the memorable brilliance that powered the Killed By Death compilations (ask yer dad - and if he doesn't know or care, burn his terrible records and make some space to track down the KBD LPs). The band's slogan is 'musica del barrio, para el barrio' - music from the neighbourhood, for the neighbourhood - but it sounds like they could use these hooks to take on the world. That's a pretty accurate sentiment as well, because this album was written during the Covid-19 lockdown of 2020, while the world bubbled over with carefully managed misinformation, police violence and the sickening overspill of white supremacy's foul brew. If Regeneracion sounds potent, it's because there was a lot to be angry about, and the result is arguably their best album yet. Those chorused-out guitar lines carry shades of deathrock, hints of Manchester circa 1980, elements of something you might call goth if it was several degrees less furious. But there's no doomed romance to this music; it's an all-out attack. Street punk with the smarts turned up and an ear turned to the lessons learned from post-punk (but crucially, not the 'post-punk revival' that is essentially shirtless beardy lads chanting non-sequiturs over landfill indie). Chiefly, it'll make you wanna get out of your chair, unite your local community and march on down towards your government's centre of operations with a simple-to-use molotov cocktail kit. Its rage is infectious. It's inspired by bleak moments in our recent shared history, but it revels in humans' capacity to find strength in each other. And the tunes? Oh damn, they're good.' Philly's own Chained Bliss set tongues a-waggin' back in 2019 with their Stained Red cassette EP, gathering more than a few comparisons to the Wipers' early racket in the process. Well, now they're back with a debut album that seems to have skipped right ahead from Is This Real? to Over The Edge: this self-titled LP has all the gut-punching ramalama, knockabout guts'n'glory of that first tape, with added layers. Melodic guitar lines come perilously close to jangling over crunching power chords, while furiously yelped choruses give way to sumptuously put-together breakdown sections that catch you off guard and kick you in the shins before legging it down the street. Chained Bliss clearly love scrappy, skatey garage rock (echoes of Agent Orange's Living In Darkness abound) as much as they love pushing that raucous clatter into something spacious - the meditative sections that flow effortlessly into absolute ripper Pillars Of Abuse are as unexpected as the thoughtful but head-spinningly energetic sections that bring Creative Seizure so thrillingly to life. Other times they're just as happy to keep you careening towards the pit with two-minute bangers, but that's the beauty of this record: it's never smarter than when it's playing dumb, and the rest of the time it's just pretty damn smart. Here's a challenge: can you listen to Ominous Life's gnarly pop without raising those fists of yours skywards and landing a firm thump on the air? Or Drifter's swaggering stomp? Or, or, or_ ahhh hell, you get what I'm saying here. Every single cut slays, every single hook snags itself on your brain. You'll come back for more, and more, and more. Are Chained Bliss your new favourite band? Well, gee, we've never met and I don't know what you like and it's not for me to say_ but on the other hand, yes. Yes, they are. If you had to characterize Raised Fist - one of Sweden's hardcore scene's longest-running and most vital acts - with just one word, respect would be it. Want proof? Lou Koller of Sick Of It All described Raised Fist as "one of the world's three most progressive hardcore bands", Bruce Dickinson of Iron Maiden fame played them on his radio show and Jona Weinhofen (I Killed The Prom Queen, ex-Bring Me The Horizon) cites them as a huge influence. Written and recorded amidst the devastating bushfires which ravaged his adopted hometown Canberra, just before the wave of pandemic broke, Shoot Out The Cameras reveals John Sharkey III to be a master craftsman; honing in on the existential dread of living in a burning world, and the imperative to find beauty in what remains. Perhaps best known as the creative force behind Clockcleaner, Sharkey’s credentials include Cleveland's 9 Shocks Terror and more recently, literate rock explorations as Puerto Rico Flowers and Dark Blue, the latter having released a pair of 12xu full-lengths. It was love (of course) that brought Sharkey from Philly to Melbourne in 2008, where he worked behind the bar at beloved venue, The Tote. Sharkey and his partner Yasmin moved back to Philly for several years; then, amid the darkening landscape of US politics, the couple decided to settle in Canberra, Yasmin’s hometown. At a physical but not psychological remove from the horrifying dysfunction of Trump’s America, Sharkey watched catastrophic bushfires encircle Canberra, raging through the hills of the Southern Tablelands, the city glowing orange, the suburbs suffocating in smoke. This is when the songs of Shoot Out The Cameras took form. As if to echo the craters of “before” and “after” that apocalyptic events leave in our collective consciousness, the songs arranged themselves into a cinematic narrative arc, from the foreboding of disaster (Side A) through its aftermath (Side B). The background horrors of totalitarianism, paranoia and surveillance also stalk the album—the cameras of the title inspired by Canberra’s omnipresent Cctv and speed cameras—just to add to the unmistakable sense of impending doom. Osaka based psych-rock three piece Hibushibire return after a long break, with a new line up and a stunning third album.

Following the successes of their debut album 'Freak Out Orgasm!' (2017), the follow up ‘Turn On, Tune In, Freak Out’ (2019) and two very well received UK tours. The band headed home to Osaka, Japan and then, the pandemic hit.

During this downtime, guitarist/vocalist Changchang decided to create a new power trio. Enter Tetsuji Toyoda (Bass/Vocals) & Aoi Hama (Drums/Vocals). The new trio have spent the last three years writing new music, playing live and honing their sound in Japan, and a short well received tour of Taiwan with Riot Season labelmates Dope Purple. And now finally, Hibushibire mark 2 is born properly.

Entering the studio with Acid Mothers Temple/Mainliner guru Makoto Kawabata in the producer chair (and also as a guest musician) once again, the band recorded album number three, 'Magical Metamorphosis Third Eye’. Makoto also adds some of his own trademark guitar howls through out the album, perfectly complimenting Changchang’s own growing prowess.

Here the band have taken their trademark psych-rock blasts and blended them perfectly with some more trippy, dare I say sweet progressive psychedelic sounds.

“The idea of this album is based on the theme of "occultism and mysticism". But it's not a serious thing, it's about the things we like (UFOs, pyramids, psychic phenomena, shamanism etc) and we all had fun while making it. In terms of what makes it different from the previous Hibushibire albums, it’s where AOI HAMA's vocals are present. I had wanted to use a female vocalist for a long time, so it was a good feeling!”

Like the bands first two albums, 'Magical Metamorphosis Third Eye’ is very much an album of two halves. Side one again is full of killer shorter tracks, while side two is reserved for a blinding majestic 20 minute epic ‘Ayahuasca Witch Abduction’.

Perhaps the biggest musical surprise here though is probably track two, the beautifully mellow tripped out ‘We Won't Go Back To The Past’, which sounds like it’s been beamed straight out of the late 60s/early 70s.

The band also tip a nod to the Beatles psychedelic classic ‘Tomorrow Never Ever Knows’, but with their own twist of course.

It’s clear with the line up changes, Changchang has decided to expand the bands musical pathway, and he’s achieve stunning results.

The band plan to return to the UK and Europe in 2024 to see friends old and new.

Dystopian Dreams’ hulking magnetism leads you expertly to headbang and worship at the altar of timeless metal, without the slightest remnant of doubt.

Blue Dolphin was a wild, iridescent punk band from Austin, Texas circa 2016. Over the course of a year, they created a buzzing, liberatory sound, a dark bloodmix of melodic ease and existential gloom. This pairing suggests monuments like 'Peace?' or 'Is This Real?' but Blue Dolphin found this path all on their own, through trust and reliance, that practice space unity that the best bands build simply through the joy of playing with each other. At times, the songs barrel along as if the band is struggling to keep their instruments under control, an unrestrainable, breathless frenzy of notes. The songs will squall and sway, reach overload, rattle half to death, and yet the moment Sissy begins singing they snap into a focused beam, a bulldozing, clear-eyed force.'Robert's Lafitte' is a rush of darkness, resilience, mystery and bliss, exactly what you'd want from a record named after Texas's oldest running gay bar, and a band maybe named after the indescribable freedom of ocean life or maybe named after a type of ecstasy. The LP contains the entire recorded output of Blue Dolphin, including all three self-released tapes and four previously unheard songs. 'Robert's Lafitte' is co-released by Post Present Medium and Cleta Patra and is limited to 500 copies. Darkness is falling. A cold wind blows from the snow-covered Carpathians, making the windows rattle and the corners of the house creak. Something is coming, eyes flashing red in the night and its footprints filled with grave dirt. What nocturnal terror is this? Why, it’s the arrival of the long-awaited third album by The Coffinshakers, folks.

While most bands quickly lose the spark, The Coffinshakers have stayed relevant – eternal like the undead. Though humor is their hallmark, there is also poignancy and something genuinely spine-tingling in their rugged, melancholy ballads. And this new offering shows them at the height of their baleful, campy power. They truly are a band that ages like fine wine – although vampires, of course, never drink… wine.

Much will be familiar to dedicated fans. Rob’s trademark malevolent chuckles still reverberate with sardonic glee, the deep rumble of his voice continuing to send all yellow-bellies hiding behind the barn. At the same time, his vocals have gained in both power and subtleness. The same goes for the guitar, bass, and drum work, now incorporating a broader array of classic Americana influences. These unholy badmen have drunk the blood straight from the neck of the authentic country, bluegrass, folk and other rootsy music of inbred US backwaters – and it has made their fangs sharper than ever.

And though The Coffinshakers still ride forth with tongue firmly planted in cheek, there is a new apocalyptic urgency to their third offering. From the marching drums of the desolate “Graves, Release Your Dead” to the echoing vocals of “River of Souls” and the cathartic cataclysm of “Down in Flames”, it all forebodes the imminent end of the whole dirty enchilada of existence. The band’s flippancy comes with a genuinely unsettling kernel of darkness – and black humor is always the most satisfying. Vampires may not cry, but we all know they laugh wickedly as they rise from the bone orchard.

The Coffinshakers' past nocturnal glories include the debut album "We Are The Undead" (1998) and the eponymous sophomore record (2007), after which the cadaverous quartet retreated to the silence of the tomb, having vacated their respective coffins only sporadically when invoked to perform undead rituals in front of a live audience. Now, many moons since they last haunted the earthly domain, the hour has come for another foray into the realm of the living. Yet again the dead shall live, the living die, and Musick shall untune the sky.

Svart Records will release Graves, Release Your Dead by The Coffinshakers on September 15th on long playing vinyl, compact disc and digital formats, including an exclusive variant with a 3D cover.

On DES Demonas’ new seven-track EP Cure For Love there’s a whalloping drum beat driving everything. But the throbbing, pumping bass, clanging, slashing guitar and whirling, swirling Farfisa are no mere passengers in this vehicle! I’m told by the other band members Paul [vivari], JOE [halladay], Mark [cisneros] and Ryan [hicks] that vocalist Jacky Cougar Abok is the loudest drummer they’ve ever heard. But here he sings! In motifs. He sings out a beat, he sings minimalist melodic hooks. He half speaks/half shouts his lyrical content in rapid fire that is closer to beat poetry than rap. His voice is insistent and demanding to be heard! And it is! By having it slightly submerged, the listener is forced to strain to hear the words because they won’t wanna miss something important! The sonic fuel of the band is a blend of post-punk, punk, funk, blues, psych-rock, Afrobeat, even bubble-gum—but the noise you hear is pure Des Demonas! Titles like the ‘Ballad Of Ike & Tina’ and ‘Black Orpheus Blues’ add to the intrigue rather than explain the content. The listener is both confronted and lured by something bigger than themselves! Total Punk is keeping things in Atlanta for a little longer. Following up GG KING's- Remain Intact with the new album from Predator—Spiral Unfolds. The two bands share members including Ryan Bell who masterfully recorded both albums. Atlanta has one of the best punk scenes going and Predator are its longest running practitioners. Despite the seven years since Predator's last full length Complete Earth and vocalist Brannon Greene splitting time between Predator and his other projects Hospice and NAG (both of which just dropped new albums) Spiral Unfolds shows the band at its strongest. The lead work is minimal but razor sharp and extremely effective. Brannon talk/sings the vocals but the hooks are so large that the understated approach lends them more assurance. Predator are kings of efficiency. Stating as much with what is there as what isn't.
