In January 1983, Minor Threat went into Inner Ear Studio for the first time as a five-piece (Brian Baker had moved from bass to second guitar and Steve Hansgen was now playing bass). They had six new songs that would end up being the center piece of what became the Out of Step 12" EP. The band had also decided to re-record the song "Out of Step" with some extra language to try to clarify the lyrics, as well as "Cashing In", a tongue-in-cheek song about the DC punk scene which they had only played live once. After much debate, "Cashing In" was added as a hidden track on the original vinyl release though not listed on the cover or label. There was still blank tape on the reel, so they decided to record an instrumental with the working title, "Addams Family" and then recorded new versions of "In My Eyes" and "Filler" to hear what they sounded like with two guitars. "Addams Family" ended up being used as a coda to "Cashing In", but the other two songs were never mixed and largely forgotten for over 35 years until the multitrack tapes were taken into the studio to be digitized in 2021. Surprised by the discovery, Ian and Don Zientara mixed the two songs along with the complete take of "Addams Family". These outtakes are now being released on a 7" to mark the 40th anniversary of the release of Out of Step.

Richmond, Virginia may seem like a surprising location for seismic catalysts, but Hard Copy now joins an elite list of RVA bands moving sound in unexpected and earth shaking directions. Destruction! Invention! Rebirth! Once upon a time there was Honor Role who deconstructed midwest hardcore and carved out a path for what eventually would become mathrock. Combining empathy wrapped in anger, a following generation would use this template to birth post-hardcore and a 2nd wave emotional music. A bit later came Labradford who were atmospheric scientists creating pulsating soundscapes bathed in drone. Their music was so devastatingly unique that Kranky willed themselves into existence to release their debut for which this historic label was built upon and continues to lead the way in experimental music. I can't help but to include Hard Copy among this kind of revelatory innovation. They are subtle shapeshifters of synth driven post-punk. At their core, we find unorthodox art rock for which Talking Heads and Pere Ubu belong, but it is stretched taut like taffy into trance-inducing, long form motorik musings. Singular vocals act as a secondary percussion. Bass lines double as a metronome heartbeat. Guitars zigzag inside a monochromatic prism. Linnear drums hammer the band's abstract narrative into a carefully crafted double-helix staircase spiraling up into ambitious avant-garde territory. Cantankerous poetry minus the Mancunian snarl of Mark E Smith behaves as a modern day deadbeat descendant making good. In short, making very very good. Widely considered in Japan to be one of the all-time greatest punk records, 1981's Don’t Eat Food! remains shockingly unknown to the rest of the world. Led by literate but unhinged Machida Machizo, a magnetic stage presence who sang in a thick Osaka dialect that sounded like nothing else at the time, INU took Japan by storm in the late '70s with their powerful and often belligerent live show. Their membership changed frequently but INU's final lineup -- the group that recorded Don't Eat Food! -- was sharp as a knife, and the band's airtight debut still wows forty years later.

It's hard to describe INU's unique sound in comparison to other bands, but maybe imagine a more fidgety Richard Hell & The Voidoids jamming with PiL? Better yet, just listen for yourself.

No strangers to playing side by side with ska, punk, and Oi! bands, they are a natural fit to help expand Pirates Press Records’ roster of soul artists. “We wanted to keep it feeling live, not a ‘live album,’ but our energy. We recorded as much as possible all together. We had the rhythm section in the main room, the horns in a booth (a big booth), but [there was] also a large window so the horns could see the rhythm section. All the horns recorded at the same time so we could capture the feel. The singers were in another booth.” says trumpeter Rick Kendrick. “There was the usual overdubbing and whatnot, but for the most part this captures our energy...I guess you could say our ‘soul!’” These recordings are by far the band’s best work - capturing the energy and spontaneity of their live show—11 tracks of upbeat, hard-partyin’ soul stompers! The band can also be caught doing what they do best, embarking on their first European tour in over five years following the release of the LP.

The latest addition to American punk band THE Drowns (based in Seattle, WA) is guitarist Simon, who played for years with the UK's Wonk Unit. Simon and his former Wonk Unit bandmate Alex helped book THE Drowns on a UK tour, and when both bands met each other in full in London, they weren't just fast friends, but like family. On this release, each band contributes one brand new song. THE Drowns, armed with their sharp rock 'n roll sound, set their sights on a protest song about the state of the US in recent years, aptly titled "The Beast," while Wonk Unit opt for more personal territory with “Rebecca,” which deals with issues related to substance abuse, personal responsibility, and mental health. Eight new destructive Tracks from Tokyo’s Crow, featuring five classic blasts of crushing metallic hardcore with harsh vocals and searing guitar solos, framed by bursts of noise-driven experimentation and end capped by a “Hi-tone” vocal version of the title track. Eye is Crow's first new recording in twelve years. Crow’s origins are in the legendary mid-1980s golden era of Japanese punk, formed in Osaka with an intense influence of guitar driven UK hardcore. They released two seminal Japanese punk records, Who Killed Dove? EP and Last Chaos LP, before going dormant at the end of the 80s. Lead Vocalist Crow reorganized the band in the mid 1990s in Tokyo with new members including guitarist Tomio from Juntess. Tomio's playing added a heavier weight to the band’s sound as their sound became a synthesis of their original Discharge-influenced attack and metallic crust hardcore. The band released several EPs, the classic Bloody Tear album, and toured the West Coast three times. Eye touches on aspects of the band's often experimental 7" EP releases, but is grounded by their classic brutal hardcore sound. Recorded at Noise Room Studios in Tokyo in 2022, mastered for vinyl by Dietrich Schoenemann at Complete mastering, It Comes with an 11” x 17” insert in a 24 Pt. Board jacket designed by lead vocalist, Crow and was pressed at RTI.

Popeye was an established fixture in Southern California, both personally and creatively, as the former frontman for melodic hardcore greats Farside. There was little in his routine to suggest at that point that Popeye’s life was headed for any sort of major change. It felt like an ideal life, in fact, until it didn’t. “It was very solitary, and I guess I was OK with that—or at least I told myself that I was OK with that—until I met the woman who is now my wife,” he explains. “That absolutely changed everything.” At the tail end of 2021, Popeye (Farside) uprooted his entire life to move across the country to the city of Scranton, Pennsylvania, where he would eventually come to meet the rest of his new band Calling Hours: guitarists Thomas McGrath (the Commercials) and Tony Bavaria (the Commercials), bassist Garrett Rothman (don’t Sleep), and drummer Jim Bedorf (don’t Sleep). For Brian McTernan, a celebrated producer with a nearly 30-year history of shaping some of the biggest hardcore records of all time—including albums for HOT Water Music, Turnstile, Circa Survive, and THRICE—advancing Calling Hours from the idea stage to the recording stage was personal: “Popeye is one of his favorite singers of all time,” Rothman explains. “He told me he named one of his cats after Popeye.” The outcome of that collaboration is Say Less, a seven-song record for Revelation Records that revisits the band members’ melodic, post-punk sensibilities while working in a decidedly contemporary direction. Stand by your friends that are hurting. That’s what New Jersey power punks Teenage Halloween do through soaring arrangements of melodic angst, wracked vocals that insist “I love you so much I would die for you”, and passion-packed two-minute dispatches tackling topics from gender euphoria, to state abuses, and an eternal quest for mental wellbeing. The results are potent punk vistas that document young queer life at the edge of America. In February 2023, the group headed into Headroom Studios in Philadelphia, PA, under the guiding hand of producer Joe Reinhart (Hop Along, Beach Bunny, Joyce Manor), and tracked the 13 dispatches on isolation, uncertainty, and hope for better days, that make up Till You Return. This second full-length outing (due for Oct 20th release via Don Giovanni) finds the band, which operated as a ‘rotating cast’ in it’s early years, now firmly entrenched as an essential four-piece comprised of Henderiks alongside Eli Frank (guitar, vocals), Tricia Marshall (bass, vocals) and Peter Gargano (drums). The quartet maintains the vital energy of their previous incarnations but brings an even more focused punch to the arrangements that leaves greater room for Henderiks’ lyrics. Fans of the band will also have noticed the creative assent of Marshall who takes the vocal lead on multiple songs that have become defining features of the band’s recent live shows and which bring a fresh new viewpoint to the band’s ongoing sonic mission for a more equal and just world.

Scandinavian jawbreakers Harmagedon offer up a nightmare future on their debut album Dystopian Dreams, with a refreshingly modern concoction of melodic death metal and crust punk.

Three piece riff machine from Stockholm Sweden, Harmagedon is a raw festering carcass of dynamic grind and roll. Featuring members of Martyrdöd and Freedom raising hell once again, Harmagedon’s debut record Dystopian Dreams is a fusion of heaviness that is difficult to pin down but makes all the damn sense in the world! With focus on primal minimalism but maximum animalism, Dystopian Dreams is the ground zero of an explosive power trio summoning raw energy into being. With no frills and no gimmicks, just relentless heaviness, Harmagedon is a matured brew of “crust punk” or “d-beat” (“kängpunk” for the diehards) infused with ravishing death-metal. Black Sabbath, Entombed, Neurosis & High on Fire spring to mind, as the calibre of Harmadgedon’s riff whirlwind is of the finest quality, the antithesis of royalty but epic and majestic in delivery. Dystopian Dreams’ hulking magnetism leads you expertly to headbang and worship at the altar of timeless metal, without the slightest remnant of doubt.

Songs like Reptilian and Controlled Chaos groove and churn, but pack a hell of a concrete punch, with nihilistic, gravelled guitars and spewing vocals of molten brimstone.

“Controlled Chaos is about propaganda actions and distractions but Reptilian is about how hard work makes you into this emotionless beast of a being. Emerging from the ashes of the Shark Bait, which contributed with one track on the Stomping At The Klub Foot Vol.5 compilation album, the Irish Psychobilly quartet released this fine rocking album on Links Records back in very early 1989, before vanishing without a trace. A solid mixture of wild and powerful Rockabilly , awesome cover versions and varied sounds and lyrics make Dark Streets real remarkable. On a side note, front man and vocalist Dave Finnegan became a Hollywood star with the blockbuster movie The Commitments. Recorded and mixed over a couple of days on a tiny budget ‘Last Train To Purgatory’ is characterised by its warped rockabilly leanings and unsettling ‘gallows’ humour. It invited and defied listeners to enjoy unsavoury visions set to a crude and trashy soundtrack at a time when such things were never more alien in the world of music. It still received favourable reviews in unexpected places, glossy horror mag Samhain and metalhead weekly Kerrrang! (giving it a high ‘K’ rating) complimented accolades and bemusement in the more musically aligned press. The album also wraps up the bands formative period, gathering up the last of their fledgling works in all their unrefined charm to sit alongside those that followed. Whether you got on board ‘The Last Train To Purgatory’ or not, everything about it was off the rails.

Action Pact were a punk rock band from Stanwell, an isolated village right under the flight-path of London Heathrow Airport, inspiring this album title-song.àFormed in 1981 by guitarist Wild Planet, bassist & lyricist Dr. Phibes, and the then 15-year-olds drummer Joe Fungus and singer George Cheex, still school-kids when their Heathrow Touchdown EP was released in October 1981. BBC Radio 1 DJ John Peel played the single many times and booked them for their first session, recorded February 1982.àSigned to Jungle's Fall Out Records imprint, Action Pact"s label debut Suicide Bag EP went to the top of the British punk chart in July 1982.àFive more singles entered the indie charts including Yet Another Dole Queue Song, and a reworked London Bouncers, along with two albums, 'Mercury Theatre - On The Air' and 'Survival of the Fattest'.àA second John Peel session in '82 and a David Jensen BBC session in '83 were also recorded and broadcast - all collected together here for the first time.

This is basically another band with another style... yet for sure keep connections with the original forgotten recordings that were featured on the above release, but this is muuuuuch better!! The offering here as you might have read on our promo flyers is a crazy mix of psychobilly, surf, garage trash and punk all performed with great production, songwriting and musicianship, the album compiles basically everything the guys recorded since their comeback in the 2010´s, all has been remastered and repackaged onto a beautiful LP to make it work as a powerfull full lenght. Honestly we found them as some of the best offerings of the" Trash" comeback , even thought compare them with those bands couldnt be exactly correct, the band sounds tight and the production is strong, no LO -FI here, also they dont fall in the old standarts, there is a huge variation of sounds through the whole LP.
