If you don’t know Sick Thoughts, you don’t know punk. The band is the mighty Drew Owen. Baltimore born and bred, he then up and moved to the swamps of New Orleans while still a teenager. The general consensus was he’d be another casualty of The Big Easy decadence, and would soon be seen hitting up tourists for money on Bourbon Street with a dog on a rope. But somehow he got hooked up with the best (worst?) folks in the city and kept making great music. That, and the fact that forty-ounce bottles just bounce off his head, have kept him alive. Rock and roll romance and the promise of socialized health care sent him to the (imaginary?) home of Killed By Death punk, Helsinki, Finland. Which makes perfect sense—this album is like the perfect KBD record, full of buzzsaw guitars, machine gun drums and hooks that hit like a tire iron. Owen’s brand of aural early-20s angst, with doses of Zero Boys, Reatards, and early Crüe, mixed with the stench of the streets, has never sounded better. This album clearly puts Sick Thoughts on top of the punk heap. It’s Owen’s world—get in it!

Naarm / Melbourne, Australia has been churning out reliable punk rock since the likes of The Chosen Few and Rowland S. Howard were kicking about in the late ’70s. Split System are a band that carry on this tradition into the 21st century. Cooked up behind the scenes in the Covid lockdowns, they seemingly came out of nowhere but sounded like they’d been slamming beers to Saints and Radio Birdman records together and playing gigs for many years. Their Vol. 2 is unmistakable Aussie high voltage proto-punk.

In their short time on the scene they have demonstrated a knack for combining muscular street punk with classic rock hooks. Their debut album Vol. 1 and follow up 7-inch were described as ferocious and powerful records with amphetamine swagger. They’re high energy and don’t believe in muddy guitar tones. The band are in their element during their raw live shows. They have shared bills with the likes of Amyl & The Sniffers, Cosmic Psychos, Civic, Bad//Dreems, Hard-Ons, Clamm, Cable Ties & C.O.F.F.I.N.

Pirates Press Records is thrilled to celebrate the long running California punk rock band Monster Squad with an extensive vinyl reissue campaign, starting from the beginning with their debut EP! The 6-song EP Not For Them is truly ground zero for Monster Squad, and a document of the band’s origins. In the summer of 2000, the band members moved in together in a shanty of a punk house with old gravestones strewn about the basement, across the street from their skate spot of choice in Vacaville, CA. These were heady times for young punks at the end of their teenage years. As their reputation as outspoken rabble rousers, grew, so too did the target on their backs, enduring fights with cops, jocks, and rednecks, and even having a Molotov cocktail tossed at their front door by a local neo-Nazi who apparently took issue with the band’s anti-racist and anti-fascist stance! Across six songs, the band members bashed out what could be considered a manifesto for what Monster Squad would be: shout-along choruses, pogo punk positivity, lyrics that stated in no uncertain terms their opposition to the Bush-era war machine & Proposition-8 era institutionalized homophobia. Perhaps most personally, the song “Pressure” featured an honest & relatable discussion of mental health issues that would become a recurring theme in the ensuing decades. Originally self-released via CD-Rs burned on the clock at Guitar Center on the band’s own Strength Through Pain Records, Monster Squad’s Not For Them is on vinyl for the first time ever! Pirates Press Records is proud to present this essential piece of turn-of-the-century California punk on 12” Magenta Vinyl with Black Splatter.

NOi!SE is a band that has always dealt in pure honesty at every stage, from songwriting to performance. The listener is always guaranteed the unvarnished truth as the band members see it. However, there are many truths in life, and some of the hardest to put into words can be the truths imparted to those closest in your life, such as from a father to a son. Years ago, while serving in the military, lead singer and songwriter, Matt Henson, set out to gather his thoughts to speak his truth to his son Liam, in the event that the worst came to pass, leaving the young man to grow up without a dad. It was a message to offer the fatherly advice and encouragement he feared he may not be present to give, a truth imparted the best way he knew how: through music. Matt recorded a demo with bass, guitar, and vocals, with the intent of circling back to the song when possible. About a year later, his bandmates surprised him with what they had added to his original recording. As moved as he was by the gesture, Matt remained uncertain about releasing it given the raw, emotional honesty of a song written for an audience of a single loved one, as well as its degree of departure when compared to a traditional NOi!SE song. Ultimately, the band will continue to speak their truth on all subjects. The raw honesty and intimate truths in this song, which will resonate with parental figures and children alike, will be shared with the world on a limited-edition picture flexi, featuring artwork by Liam himself!

A few years back someone released a 10″ boxset comprising of a box, badge, poster and a 10″ lathe cut EP with just 6 tracks taken from the set played at Pukkelpop Festival in Belgium (Aug 26th 1990).

You didn’t get much in the way of music for your hard earned €’s, £’s or $’s….And it was claimed that there were only 10 (?) set’s made.

What you get here is basically the full gig with a great sound pressed on 200 grm coloured vinyl and housed in a high quality, heavy guage sleeve with a beautiful glossy finish. No hand numbering, you can put your own number in up to 100 although it seems 200 have been pressed and what’s more it comes with a fab poster, identical to the poster in the box set !

We’re told only 200 of these were pressed (although a bunch in black no doubt) and we have a couple of boxes coming…As usual it’s a case of 1st come, 1st served.

Activator is the third installment from the trio of Jayson Gerycz, Jen Powers and Matthew Rolin, who respectively need no introduction writ-large. For anyone observing the American underground in the last decade, whether live, on tour or across various listening formats, these names are attached to the crucial goings-on propelling the Rust Belt and beyond. Here we find the trio expand their collaborative vernacular across two sides of vinyl starting with the steady strumming of 'Entrance', a paradox of pensive riffing and anxious percussion where Gerycz and Powers meld into a nebulous cluster of shapeshifting staccato and phantom rhythms. Tracks like 'Sun Rays' and 'Ivory' walk a tightrope between structured songcraft with chord patterns and concise riffs held together by steady cadence, ranging from hand bells to the bombastic, full-kit eruptions Gerycz has perfected over many years. As each piece ascends and unfurls, Powers provides a gentle tessellating from her dulcimer, with each strike landing like raindrops upon shallow puddles. The title track 'Activator' displays the full range and might of the trio, highlighting and merging the many facets and abilities each individual brings to the table, forming the singular identity that has made the project so beloved. Starting with slow dulcimer swells, watery bells, and mellow, motorik electric guitar, the track slowly tangles up its own elements and tumbles itself with grace and patient beauty while ascending to an ecstatic explosion of distortion and thunderous drumming before dissolving into an iridescent singing bowl meditation. Activator leaves it all on the table, displaying a perpetual metamorphosis of different modes from improv to song structure, a display of seemingly endless possibilities executed with a nimble prowess that comes from time spent in close collaboration. Sarah Black played bass and guitar and wrote music in several Minneapolis bands including Kickball, Period, Plain Jane, the Bleeding Hickeys, the Lie-Ons, the Pointing Geenas and Brandy Thunders. In the Minneapolis performance scene, Sarah was a performance artist, drag and burlesque performer. Sarah is also a scenic painter and welder who worked on commercial sets, films, and music videos including some rock sculptures that can be seen in Prince's video 'The Holy River.' Jenn Gori trained as a vocalist and was a member of impossibly nerdy musical ensembles and performance groups, singing and arranging music for multi-part vocal compositions including madrigal music, a cappella, and improvisational harmonies. After moving to Minneapolis from Boston, Jenn ventured into punk, drag and burlesque performance, songwriting and playing drums in the Bleeding Hickeys, the Lie-Ons, Pointing Geenas and Brandy Thunders. Chris Brokaw was and remains a member of Come, Codeine and the Martha's Vineyard Ferries, sometimes Charnel Ground, sometimes the Lemonheads. He makes solo albums and film scores, and teaches guitar + drums. Chris and Jenn + Sarah made odysseys living in New York and Seattle for several years each, at exactly the same times, without being aware of each other, all ending up (back) in Boston at roughly the same time a few years ago, apparently following the same north star on the same crooked path. Chris met Jenn + Sarah at a yard show at Brad Searles' house as the pandemic was cooling in 2021 and connected further via the Mr./Mrs. California nexus at 40 South St., Jamaica Plain. J+S asked C to play rhythm guitar on one song in the studio and instead he played on 4. They decided to play a show as Lupo Citta, a name inspired by 1970s Italian horror and spaghetti western film titles. More shows, more songs, more recordings ensued and here we are. Lupo Citta are thrilled to present their first album, are busy writing the next one, and will maybe be coming to your town soon.

1977 was a pivotal year for Motorhead, seeing as it saw the release of their debut, self-titled album and also the hiring of Fast Eddie Clarke, forging what is invariably seen as the classic line up of this seminal band. The year may be closely associated with the height of punk rock, but the ultra heavy metal stylings of Lemmy and co always crossed the divide and appealled to punk and metal fans alike. The 11 tracks here straddle the tracks written for that debut LP ('Iron Horse/Born To Lose', 'Vibrator' and 'White Line Fever') and older material such as 'Motorhead', originally penned by Lemmy's previous employers Hawkwind, their cover of Eddie Holland's Motown classic 'Leaving Here' and 'On Parole', first recorded with Clarke's predecessor Larry Wallis in 1976 then shelved. The sound of one of the finest bands ever just beginning to hit their stride.

American Punk-Rock group The Toros formed in 1976 in Chula Vista, California. The band was originally formed with Javier Escovedo (vocals/guitar), Robert Lopez (guitar), Héctor Penalosa (bass) and Baba Chenelle (drums). Often referred to as "the Mexican Ramones," they were just one of many contributors to the city of Los Angeles' Punk explosion in the late '70s, although they never received the acclaim like their contemporaries Black Flag, Circle Jerks or Germs and Wipers. They have more followers and fans outside of the United States, especially Australia, Europe and Spain in particular. The label "the Mexican Ramones" did not take into account their other revealing influences: pre-Punk and Garage-Rock bands. The Zeros make it evident on this album, releasing covers of New York Dolls among others. But the originals, for example "They Say (That Everything's Alright)" and "Handgrenade Heart", also exploit the spirit of loud, strident rock. There are also slow and melodic, sloppy and dirty Pop songs to satisfy all tastes. The quartet broke up in 1981, reformed sporadically for live shows, and recorded the 1999 album "Right Now!". An excellent album. Ideal to have a good time and enjoy good Rock. Also, for those who don't know The Zeros, an excellent introductory album, so you can then review their catalogue.Versions of songs by The Zeros were released by the Los Angeles bands Wednesday Week ("They Say That Everything's Alright"), The Muffs ("Beat Your Heart Out"), the Basques La Secta ("Wild Weekend"), the Australians Hoodoo Gurus or the Swedes The Nomads ("Wimp").

The Bollock Brothers are a British punk act formed in 1979 by the London promoter, DJ, and manager Jock McDonald. They are best known for their English language cover of Serge Gainsbourg’s song “Harley David (Son of a Bitch)” (originally in French) and Alex Harvey’s “Faith Healer”.

As well as being known for their original songs “Horror Movies”, “The Bunker”, “The Legend Of The Snake” and "The Slow Removal of The Left Ear of Vincent van Gogh" which featured Martin Glover of the band Killing Joke, they are known for their release of cover versions by artists Led Zeppelin, The Sensational Alex Harvey Band, Steppenwolf, David Bowie, and Vangelis among others.
