The time was right when Joe Strummer and Joe Simonon of The Clash decided to take the so-called long and winding road. This famous show at the Station Pub in Gateshead was more than an intimate affair. And it was part of the acoustic busking tour the band took after the release of their latest studio album, Cut The Crap. This set is dated May 11, 1985, and it’s a brilliant example of the rootsy folk heritage the two were delivering at the time. This particular recording was produced while the band was performing outside The Station in Gateshead, Newcastle in front of what sounds like a lucky 50 or so people! You hear a single acoustic guitar with some clavinets or wood blocks clapping out the beat...and then the reaction from the crowd in -between. The sound is crisp and clear even if the band was playing "off-mike". A rarity in its own.

Not much has been written written about the conceptual hardcore band inspired by and named after a 9th century antisocial loner monk-poet of China’s Tang dynasty. Han-shan [the band] existed from 1991 to ‘93 in California. Their lyrics covered themes of solitude, mystery, poverty, and discord, directly inspired by the verses of the titular poet. Han-shan’s music was psychopathic, with blood-curdling vocals, and messy but powerful, in the vein of Void, Siege or Septic Death. The band played to the absolute limits of their physical ability and then some, with a sound that complemented their West Coast contemporaries—bands like Heroin, Mohinder, Second Story Window, Antioch Arrow and Angel Hair. Recorded in San Diego by Matt Anderson in late 1993 and originally released posthumously in early 1994 on the tiny Soledad record label, Hans-shan’s eight song seven inch EP came packaged in a manila envelope, each one hand-printed with a woodcut block and roller, with the art and insert referencing both the poet and Tang dynasty China. LG Records has carefully reproduced this cover art and returned to the original multitrack tape. Tim Green has remixed the recording at Louder Studios for a significantly more powerful, and yes, Louder, 12” 45rpm release. Members of Han-shan had previously been in Suckerpunch, Brain Tourniquet, End of the Line, and John Henry West; and went on to play in Behead The Prophet Nlsl, Solid Gold, Drunk Horse, Astral, Tight Bro’s from Way Back When, Sex/Vid, Very Paranoia, Low Plateau and Nudity. "Old City, New Ruins" takes its title from Rome, the city where the band is based. It depicts the contemporary ruins of the capital, yet it's merely a pretext to expose the complexities of everyday life common to Western societies and their major cities, foremost among them. The album unfolds episode by episode, driven by the need to express anger and frustration, but also the antidotes to them. Social references abound, as well as intimate reflections and even profound investigations into the psychoses of the marginalized and abandoned. It tells the story of collective strength, musically expressed through a choral quality that runs deep in the band."Old City, New Ruins" is a unique hardcore album, inspired both by emerging currents of the genre - such as Comeback Kid, Turnstile, Trapped Under Ice - and by the European and Northern European heavy tradition - like Kvelertak, Turbonegro - to the pantheon of influences of Feldspar: Nirvana, Motorhead, Gorilla Biscuits, Slayer and everything in between. Second release on Robert Pollard's new Splendid Research label is a vinyl & CD reissue of a 1984 demo cassette by Children's Crusade, post-punk teenage band of Guided By Voices' Doug Gillard. The Cleveland guitarist went on to record for Scat, Homestead and Restless Records with the bands Death of Samantha, Cobra Verde, My Dad Is Dead, and Gem, before joining GBV (1996-2004), then Nada Surf (2010-2016), then rejoining GBV (2016-present), as well as playing on albums by Richard Buckner, Neko Case and others. 1980s Cleveland was a hotbed for indie rock, following in the Northern Ohio footsteps of Pere Ubu, The Dead Boys, The Styrenes, Mirrors and Devo. "Children’s Crusade was a fleeting blotch on the wild, mid-80s Cleveland underground music scene, slowly seeping through like a drop of oil on the uniformly black jeans of that era – noticeable only after it settles, spreads, and you realize it won’t come out in the wash."

San Diego, California’s Bent Blue began as a band intent on referencing early hardcore punk with an emphasis on fast, melodic riffs and an overt social consciousness. Over time, the Four-piece has honed their sound and injected a healthy level of introspection into their lyricism. Their Indecision Records debut and first full-length, So Much Seething, sees the band oscillate between straightforward hardcore and a post-hardcore sound. Less fast punk, but more bounce. Through the magical transportive inspiration of rock n roll, our unequivocally handsome protagonists found salvation thrice. R n B stimulation, ponk agitation and slop rock demonstration saved them from themselves, from the downcast stares of detractors, from the cruelness of the everyday. Art as therapy for the clinically insane. A functional state of illness is the bottom line of this cultural achievement. Herein, the band exercises the democratic tools they learnt in their formative years as craftsmen and apply them broadly to a new swath of material. Yucca Alta Records is ecstatic to present our inaugural release: the debut, self-titled LP from the Corsano Baiza Watt Trio. This is an all-improvised, mind-blowing, punk AF mind-meeting between Chris Corsano, one of America's premier avant-garde drummers, and two legendary SoCal punk pioneers: guitarist Joe Baiza (Saccharine Trust, Universal Congress Of) and bassist Mike Watt (Minutemen, fIREHOSE). The bulk of this LP consists of studio recordings made deep in the Mojave Desert (Landers, CA to be exact) in December of 2023. The Corsano Baiza Watt Trio had never played, or even entirely met, before this session; what you hear is the surprise and fierce delight of 3 great musicians coming together in real time. The first track, "51 Card Solitaire," begins abruptly in mid-flight, capturing the exact moment that recording began, as the trio played together for the very first time. The LP's explosive last 2 tracks are taken from the trio's first-ever live show, in Watt's long-time home base of San Pedro, CA, in front of a joyous, fully lit audience. The level of group interaction revealed in these 7 tracks is truly startling. Corsano's buoyant multi-dimensional kineticism is in full effect; Baiza effortlessly mixes noir-ish, bopping single-note phrases with feral string scrapes and vicious chord-flailing; Watt holds down strong anchoring bass lines like the sailor he is, then flies abruptly, thrillingly off-script.

As an homage to the average length of a pop song, the title symbolizes the question of the why of one's own creativity, the art of switching off in these times and the unforgettable pleasure of a fleeting moment. The ten tracks on the record examine various topics, mostly in a critical examination of current social developments. For example, "Hängepeters" denounces the careless handling of the legacy of colonial crimes, while "Lindnereffekt" takes aim at the increasing superficiality in politics. Kleiekotzer" takes a critical look at the role of the media in society's shift to the right. But that is only one side of "Für 3 Minuten 11". The Carpe Diem anthem "Panini" shows that things can also be lighter and more liberating, and the song "Pflugschreiber" sends a musical greeting to the pride of Mannheim's adopted city in its pop academy. It is the intense mixture of profound lyrics and energetic sound with a pinch of hope and cheerfulness that makes "Für 3 Minuten 11" the musical equivalent of an intense, short-lived moment to be enjoyed to the full.

From São Paulo, the largest metro area in the southern hemisphere, hails Point OF NO Return. Founded in 1996, this three-singer Brazilian band has long carried the vegan, straight-edge banner in the tropics, singing about political issues and playing a metallic, mosh-infused brand of hardcore. After releasing two albums, one EP, and extensively touring South America and Europe in the early 2000s, the band went on hiatus in 2006. At the point the band stopped playing, they had written nine new songs, which they planned to eventually record and release as a third album. However, life got in the way as members formed families and some moved away from São Paulo. Slowly, they began to progress toward finishing and recording the new songs: instruments were recorded in Brazil in 2017, lyrics were written between 2019 and 2024, and vocals were recorded between 2023 and 2024. The result is Point OF NO Return’s new album, The Language Of Refusal, whose title refers to hardcore punk as a transnational community, a form of art, and a means of expression for those discontent with the way things are. With songs addressing some of the most pressing issues today, such as deforestation and labor exploitation in the Amazon rainforest, the inequities of global warming, the rise of global conservative populism, and the challenges of organizing dissenting political movements, the album delivers these topics in a mix of late-’90s mosh core, SLAYER-esque riffs, gang vocals, and hints of Napalm Death.

LA Sacree Grole is a tale by the Tamerantong company, set to music by Ludwig VON 88. Tamerantong! is a theatre company based in Mantes-la-Jolie, Paris-Belleville and Saint-Denis that puts on shows with children and young people from these neighbourhoods. Ludwig VON 88, road companions of the great hours of alternative rock (Bérurier Noir, Parabellum...) is also the only rock band capable of rhyming in ‘ong’. Tamerantong! had long been plundering their repertoire for their shows. In retaliation, the Ludwigs decided to compose the soundtrack to ‘La Sacrée Grôle’: a Gallic legend told and sung by twenty kids from Paris-Belleville. In the heart of the land of the Arvernes, reigns a valiant free people. Their village lies on the edge of a dreadful forest where no one ever ventures. But the time has come for all the peoples of Gaul to enter the fearsome forest and set off in search of the Sacred Pole! La Sacrée Grôle premiered at Paris-Belleville and was performed from 1996 to 1998 in Paris (Café de la Danse, Palace, Trianon, Café Éphémère / Les Halles), Mantes-la-Jolie, Briançon, Rouen (Festival Débarquement Jeunes) and Montreal/Quebec. More than 4 years after "Sculpture Of Violence," Giver from Cologne, Germany, announce their third album "The Future Holds Nothing But Confrontation" for September 20, 2024, on End Hits Records. In recent years, Giver have not only refined their hardcore sound to be more brutal and atmospheric with elements of metal and post-punk, but thematically, it's clear that their new album serves as an even more drastic political manifesto. Capitalism, culture wars, the climate crisis, and their societal implications and consequences are central themes on "The Future Holds Nothing But Confrontation." Giver critique the prevailing neoliberalism and its ongoing agitation for the uncompromising pursuit of happiness and satisfaction. The band explains: "What neoliberalism has established is a lonely place. Its driving force is the individualized pursuit of constant fulfillment, altering the way we interact with each other. Whatever we do to achieve satisfaction, there's always a lingering sense of something missing. Happiness and contentment are never the goal; they've been replaced by profit margins and excess. These are endless and extremely unevenly distributed. Anger arises in this vacuum. With this album, we want to remind that it's the economic conditions and inequalities that should be the target of our collective frustration. They create depression, despair, and a downward spiral. Being anti-fascists is not enough; we must also be anti-capitalists." This anger is also reflected musically in the furious 11 new tracks. Filled with powerful guitar riffs and sometimes bilingual lyrics, some of the songs also introduce a new, deep style of spoken word for Giver, making the eventual eruptions that much more impactful. With the release of their third album, Giver venture into fresh and melodic territory, integrating elements of post-punk, black metal, and hardcore into a sound that sits somewhere between bands like Oathbreaker, Converge, or Chelsea Wolfe. Although "The Future Holds Nothing But Confrontation" builds on a foundation of biting, powerful metal, it also incorporates dark vocal lines that could be found on a Fontaines D.C. or Idles record. "The Future Holds Nothing But Confrontation" was produced by Lewis Johns (Rolo Tomassi, Employed To Serve, Funeral For A Friend).

A new Ceremony 7” single to help commemorate 10 years of their landmark album Rohnert Park. Rohnert Park cemented Ceremony’s legacy as a once-in-a-generation California punk band, and indeed one of the all-time great, quintessentially California bands, period. It’s no wonder that, ten years on, its reputation has only grown. This 7” single features “The Doldrums (Friendly City)” on side A and an unreleased track unearthed from the original Rohnert Park recording session on side B.

When it came to the follow-up of their 1990 magnum opus Feel The Darkness, failure was not an option for Poison Idea. Seeking a way to expand their musical horizons while still retaining their cranked-up style, UK-cum-Chicagoian producer Iain Burgess (Big Black, The Effigies, Naked Raygun) was brought in to assist in this audacious feat. The results—1992’s Blank Blackout Vacant—successfully showcased a meshing of Poison Idea's classically surging sound and a new found refinement: demonstrated by the brass section on tracks like the driving opener “Say Goodbye” or the chugging, Motörhead-esque “Forever and Always”. Rolling on with their relentless reissue schedule for Portland’s Kings of Punk, TKO replenishes the double-disc edition of Blank Blackout Vacant first introduced back in the maddening year of 2020. Along with the album’s original batch of thirteen tracks capped off by a thundering version of New York Dolls'’ “Vietnamese Baby”, you get a bonus LP containing a bevy of B-Sides, covers by acts as disparate as Lords Of The New Church, The Who, and Booker T. & The MGs., as well as a live on-air performance on Portland’s long-running community radio station Kboo from the Fall of 1991. Originally released at a pivotal point in the band's career, Blank Blackout Vacant remains an essential component in the understanding of the band's epic trajectory.

Faraquet began as a side project featuring Smart Went Crazy members Devin Ocampo and Jeff Boswell, along with Devin's high school friend Chad Molter. Faraquet stepped up as a full-time band after the demise of SWC and started playing more shows, releasing a couple of singles as well as appearing on a split CD with Akarso. Due to their non-traditional time signatures and off-kilter arrangements the band was often described as “math-rock”—a description they never warmed up to. Faraquet felt more aligned with the Minutemen and both the passion of their live performance and their advanced sense of melody set them well above and apart from the basement scientist crowd. The View from This Tower was recorded by J. Robbins and released in November of 2000.
