When Ara Babajian of the Slackers approached Kepi about having an all new challenge, Kepi jumped at the chance to work with his long time friend and drummer hero! Bass player? B-face!!!! With solid rhythm section secured, they started selecting songs that they loved! Years of long backstage chats revealed a common love of some of the “darker” songs of rock’s pop, goth, and new wave eras… the Cure, Cars, Lords of the New Church, Nick Cave all entered the conversation and a group of tunes was selected! Who would produce? Ara wanted to go somewhere new to him, so Kepi and Bface rounded up their old friend Mass Giorgini at Sonic Iguana studios in Lafayette, IN, a colleague who had produced some of Lookout records music in the 90’s and early 2000’s... With 10 songs, also including selections by Nick Cave, Peter Murphy, Lou Reed and Iggy Pop, this little project was actually taking shape! They realized that if they just added David Bowie’s “Heroes” and Trex’ “Cosmic Dancer”, they would have a personal ‘desert island disc’, so they did! The record includes contributions from Ian Fowles (Aquabats, Gerard Way), Prima Donna’s Aaron Minton and Kevin Preston (also currently playing in Green Day), and several other friends, with artwork by artist Tom Neely.

After releasing Three singles already this year, THE Clerks are now set to release their album! Only 150 Copies Pressed! From their beginnings in late '76 The Clerks had been gigging the pubs, clubs and halls of Birmingham and London and places in between. By the start of 1980 they'd built a reputation for delivering a lean 45 minute set of their own three-minute songs with a 6o's sensibility and a pop punk energy. They had a loyal following and had supported the likes of Spizz and Tenpole Tudor. The Hope & Anchor in London had become a regular haunt where the small room would overflow with fans, pub rockers, punks and mods plus the odd record company A&R guy. The twelve songs on this LP were recorded by a friend and fan of The Clerks as they played a live set. Consequently, the recording is not of studio quality; it's been transferred, restored and edited but has no overdubs nor any other musical enhancements and is now available for the first time on Detour Records. All of the songs are written by The Clerks apart from 'I'm Down' written by a certain Lennon-McCartney. Lead guitarist Paul Day takes lead vocal on ten of the songs; rhythm guitarist Martin Booth sings lead on 'Cold About Love' and ' It Doesn't Mean That Much To Me'. Martin Poole is on bass and vocals and Paul Cuthbert plays drums. Despite the growing reputation and record company interest, by the end of the year the band had split up and gone their separate ways. So, turn the lights down low, turn the volume up and imagine you're in the steamy basement of a north London pub on a mid-winters evening in 1980. This is the authentic sound of The Clerks as you would have seen and heard them 'Live in London'.

Ready for some more racket from the titans of the tritone? The deans of decay? The earls of entropy? Until recently it was unknown how prolific Cleveland’s Spike In Vain were in their three year run, roughly Fall 1982 through Fall 1985. Had all the group’s songs been recorded, they would’ve filled five LPs handily. While only the debut album Disease Is Relative, compilation appearances, and a virtually unknown cassette were issued during their run, 2021 saw the band’s unreleased second album Death Drives A Cadillac pulled out from its secret lair, and 2023 will see the release of the Jesus Was Born In A Mobile Home cassette via this much expanded double vinyl edition. Upping the original’s twelve track program with an additional fifteen unreleased or rare tracks, this compilation provides a panoramic view of this mercurial, many-headed beast of absurdity, discord, and death.

This release is loaded with surprises for even die-hard fans. Among other highlights, there’s a nine minute version of “Opus.” While the recording on Disease Is Relative is essentially three short songs smushed together, this later live version doubles that, with all new material seamlessly tacked onto the original. “Winter’s Black Hand” is a shocking outtake from the second album with the same insane, harrowing quality as “Children In The Subway.” There’s a 1982 rehearsal recording of “Tenement Housing,” the closest the band ever came to a straight up punk song. Or the rambling, shambling, and devastating “Drunk And Ugly Soul Food (As I Understand It)” from an early 1985 radio session. Along with other live recordings of songs that never saw the inside of a studio and a few more outtakes, Jesus also gathers stray songs from compilation albums with much improved sound. The majority of the tracks here were mastered from the original reels, while others had to be rescued from cassettes. Veteran engineer John Golden has done a knockout job dealing with the wide variety of source materials, lending it cohesion without sacrificing the skull-splitting rawness of some tracks.

2022 classic black vinyl repress of reissue of 1987's opera rock by Spain's legendary punk band Eskorbuto.Housed in a controversial gatefold sleeve, the double LP is a political satirical work against any kind of dictatorial regime."Los demenciales chicos acelerados" is Eskorbuto's fourth studio album, originally released by Discos Suicidas in 1987. It was their most ambitious project, a double LP rock opera in the vein of "Quadrophenia" by their beloved The Who. It tells the story of an unscrupulous young man who wishes to achieve power at all costs, stepping over everyone and everything in order to do whatever he wants politically. In the end, he falls due to his ego and is betrayed by those around him. Hence lines such as "crowds are a nuisance", "I'll come unscathed out of the attacks planned by my image consultant" or "shouting in front of the scum".In 1988 band members Iosu and Juanma narrated the album's concept and story on a Radio Euskadi show, the Basque Country's public broadcaster. This satirical political plot also explains the controversial Nazi pictures on the front and back covers. Eskorbuto were equalling the unprincipled politician of their rock opera with the Nazis and Franco's dictatorship. It's a conceptual record that attacks any kind of dictatorial political regime.Although "Los demenciales..." came out on Discos Suicidas, in typical Eskorbuto fashion the band stole a copy of the master and sold it to the Twins label, which also released it a few months later with a different cover. The original sleeve caused some trouble, to say the least, with its combination of Nazi photos and the Spanish flag on the back accompanied by the words "Of national interest".The album contains new versions of a few previous tracks such as 'Ratas rabiosas' and 'Enterrado vivo' plus the studio version of 'Más allá del cementerio'. Of all the many great European bands to jump on those shows, there was one who left a lasting impression on the guys: The Travoltas. With a unique style of mixing Beach Boys harmonies with "Ramones-core" (a term that wasn't even used yet), they were right up their alley. Josh stayed in touch with singer Perry Leenhouts over the years, with hopes to join forces again someday, either on tour or a split record. 20+ years go by.. no luck again.. until now! There was plenty of genuine discontent in Britain at the tail end of the 1970s, and it had little to do with bin strikes or dark rumours about overflowing morgues. In the world of popular music, the most liberating after-effect of the Sex Pistols was that anyone with something to say now felt they could make a 7” single. “Winter Of Discontent” is the sound of truly DIY music, made by people who maybe hadn’t written a song until a day or two before they went into the studio. It’s spontaneous and genuinely free in a way the British music scene has rarely been before or since.

“Winter of Discontent” has been compiled by Saint Etienne’s Bob Stanley and Pete Wiggs, the latest in their highly acclaimed series of albums that includes “The Daisy Age”, “Fell From The Sun” and “English Weather” ("really compelling and immersive: it’s a pleasure to lose yourself in it" - Alexis Petridis, the Guardian). The era's bigger DIY names (Scritti Politti, TV Personalities, the Fall) and the lesser-known (Exhibit A, Digital Dinosaurs, Frankie’s Crew) are side by side on “Winter Of Discontent”. Mark Perry’s Sniffin’ Glue command – “Here’s one chord, here’s another, now start a band” – was amplified by the Mekons and the Raincoats, whose music shared a little of punk’s volume, speed and distortion, but all of its obliqueness and irreverence.

The discontent was with society as a whole. The band names (Thin Yoghurts!) and those of individual members (Andrew Lunchbox!) had enough daftness to avoid any accusations of solemnity.

Other times they're just as happy to keep you careening towards the pit with two-minute bangers, but that's the beauty of this record: it's never smarter than when it's playing dumb, and the rest of the time it's just pretty damn smart. Here's a challenge: can you listen to Ominous Life's gnarly pop without raising those fists of yours skywards and landing a firm thump on the air? Or Drifter's swaggering stomp? Or, or, or_ ahhh hell, you get what I'm saying here. Every single cut slays, every single hook snags itself on your brain. You'll come back for more, and more, and more. 'What if Blitz hailed from Los Angeles and sang in Spanish' isn't a question you hear all that often. Fortunately, we don't need to ask - the answer is provided by Generacion Suicida's latest album, which rages and rattles in all the right places, drenched in the memorable brilliance that powered the Killed By Death compilations (ask yer dad - and if he doesn't know or care, burn his terrible records and make some space to track down the KBD LPs). The band's slogan is 'musica del barrio, para el barrio' - music from the neighbourhood, for the neighbourhood - but it sounds like they could use these hooks to take on the world. That's a pretty accurate sentiment as well, because this album was written during the Covid-19 lockdown of 2020, while the world bubbled over with carefully managed misinformation, police violence and the sickening overspill of white supremacy's foul brew. If Regeneracion sounds potent, it's because there was a lot to be angry about, and the result is arguably their best album yet. Those chorused-out guitar lines carry shades of deathrock, hints of Manchester circa 1980, elements of something you might call goth if it was several degrees less furious. But there's no doomed romance to this music; it's an all-out attack. Street punk with the smarts turned up and an ear turned to the lessons learned from post-punk (but crucially, not the 'post-punk revival' that is essentially shirtless beardy lads chanting non-sequiturs over landfill indie). Chiefly, it'll make you wanna get out of your chair, unite your local community and march on down towards your government's centre of operations with a simple-to-use molotov cocktail kit. Its rage is infectious. It's inspired by bleak moments in our recent shared history, but it revels in humans' capacity to find strength in each other. And the tunes? Oh damn, they're good.' Some cities just know how to produce bands by the bucketload. Take Detroit, for instance: we don't need to rattle through a full list or anything, but safe to say that if your town has given the world the likes of Motown, Derrick May and J Dilla - before we even start to think about The Stooges et al - then you could be forgiven for thinking there must be something in the water round those parts. So whaddya say? Should we get to know two more fine exponents of melodic wonder from the Motor City? Only seems fair. This split LP between citymates The Stools and Toeheads certainly isn't a letdown as far as the illustrious company of their forebears goes. In fact, it's a fast-paced thrill ride that oscillates between hip-shaking rock'n'roll swing and bone-shaking hardcore energy. You might already be familiar with The Stools thanks to their ludicrously addictive Feelin' Fine 7", which dropped via Drunken Sailor (hey, those guys sound familiar_) early in 2021. If you though that short EP was a good time, wait 'til you see what they've got in store here: right out of the gate, opener Dead Man's Ford smashes the devil-toed boogie of the MC5 at their slinkiest into the teeth-clenched intensity of Negative Approach (and that's a pretty decent John Brannon-style roar they deliver too). They maintain this quality and velocity across their side, which is brilliant. There's no let-up from Toeheads either - their side of this split sounds like someone revved up The Gun Club and aimed fireworks inside their exhaust. This is the sound you always knew you were working towards when you got into this rock'n'roll business; guitars blazing, lungs bursting, a wall of sound collapsing while we all dance in the debris. Does it sound like anything new? Fuck no, but that's not the point. Much like The Stools, there's nothing you can say about Toeheads that can't be summarised with the phrase 'total exhilaration'. Death Pill, are an all-female hardcore punk power trio of considerable muscle, combining metalcore, punk rock and (like labelmates 'Shooting Daggers') oodles of 'Riot Grrl' vibe. It's significant how many female punk bands are using the stance and attitude of the 'Riot Grrl' movement as a touchstone for what they are about, but it doesn't end there. From the classic punk of Black Flag, The Distillers and Circle Jerks, to modern outfits like Axe Rash and the thrash metal of Nervosa and Exodus, there's a nod to all of this in Death Pill's visceral sound. Full on and fully formed on their self-titled debut album.That aside, what makes this release even more pertinent for us, and the fact that it is happening at all, is that Mariana, Anastasiya and Nataliya are from the Ukraine, who's troubles are well known to all of course. Hard times, but right now there is a real chance to change lives for the better, the victory is still undoubted.So there is hope for sure, and as this album amply demonstrates, plenty of fighting spirit. It's a killer debut.However, producing a 'killer record' under such extraordinary circumstances was a challenge too. Tracking started during Covid and was completed in late 2021, only three tracks were mixed before the war hit. However the band and their production team were able to somehow continue and finished everything including the artwork in 5 months whilst the Russian invasion rolled on. A testament to their drive and single mindedness.Although things are uncertain, the band is still going strong, still together.Death Pill is set for release on the 24th February 2023, perhaps fittingly a year to the day that Russia invaded Ukraine.'Death Pill' will be released on limited edition white with red splatter vinyl housed in a full colour single sleeve with a printed lyric inner. Full download included. There will also be a limited CD version in a 4 panel digipack with a 12 page lyric booklet.
