Als The Residents im Jahr 1978 die 33 RPM EP Duck Stab! Im 7" Format veröffentlichten, war das für die Gruppe eine nette Abwechslung von den sich über Jahre (1975 -1979) hinziehenden, anspruchsvollen und experimentellen Aufnahmen an ihrem epochalen Eskimo Album. Außerdem brauchte das Label Ralph Records, eine Einnahmequelle um die lange Phase ohne ein "echtes neues" Album zu überbrücken. Zur allgemeinen Überraschung wurde die EP ein Hit und verkaufte mehr als 50.000 Einheiten in wenigen Monaten. Die Nachfrage liess auch in der Folge nicht nach und so drängte Ralph Records The Residents eine zweite EP - Buster & Glen - aufzunehmen, die dann schlussendlich zusammen mit Duck Stab! als LP-Release zu einem Klassiker und großem Verkaufserfolg wurde. Einige Jahre später, zwischen 1981 und 1988 übernahm Night Flight, eine damals populäre Sendung im US-Kabelfernsehen, Video-Clips von The Residents in ihr reguläres Programm auf - insbesondere "Hello Skinny", das legendäre Video zum Duck Stab! / Buster & Glen Album. Für viele Fans der Band war Night Flight der erste Berührungspunkt mit The Residents. Im Jahr 2016 feierte der Sender unter dem Namen Night Flight plus fröhliche Wiederauferstehung als Internet Streaming-Service und bat The Residents anlässlich des 40ten Jubiläums des Programms um einen Video-Beitrag. Da die Gruppe ohnehin an einer Live-Version von Duck Stab! als Teil ihrer 50ten Jubiläums-Tour im Jahr 2022 arbeitete, bot sich Duck Stab! Alive! als eine naheliegende Wahl an, um daraus eine Show für Night Flight plus zu produzieren. Und so begaben sich The Residents unter der Leitung von Regisseur John Sanborn und Kameramann Frazer Bradshaw vom 19. bis 21. Mai 2021 in die 25th Street Studios in Oakland, Kalifornien um die neu ausgearbeitete Performance Duck Stab! Alive! Live im Studio aufzunehmen. Bunny Boy was one of the most ambitious projects in the group's long history of experimental concept driven studio albums and stage shows. It began as an interactive web series about an old friend, "Bunny" trying to find his missing brother and soon after became a studio album, a soundtrack album, and a stage show that toured Europe and the United States. By the time the tour had finished the story had grew to 66 web episodes and eventually sprouted two additional limited-edition CDs of more studio recordings, a book that collected all the email responses to the videos, and even a comic book. This is the only tour by The Residents that has never had a live album released in any way. "The Land of Fire and Ice" has long been known for immense natural beauty, ancient folklore, hakarl, aluminum and hairy little horses. What you may not know is that punks were also there from the very start of the show. One of the most important bands to emerge from the thriving Reykjavík scene was Vonbrigði. Though they draw influence from UK and European post-punk and American hardcore, have no doubts Vonbrigði were 100% their own unique thing. They didn't receive a ton of international attention at the time and sort of faded into history but not without releasing a handful of songs, including a blistering hardcore track on the Rokk Í Reykjavík soundtrack compilation and an incredible EP on the fledgling Gramm label owned by Ásmundur Jónsson and Einar Örn (of Purrkur Pillnikk, Kukl and, more notably, Sugarcubes fame). All of the aforementioned songs are included here along with the rest of the previously (and unbelievably, I mean how is material this amazing not released immediately after recording it? Crazy!) unreleased '82/'83 sessions. 71 minutes of sweat and grit. Who needs volcanoes when you have Vonbrigði's fire? (Live at the) Whiskey a Go-Go is a live album by The Stooges of the post Raw Power area. Produced by Ron Asheton and originally released in 1988. Recordings were taped on September 16th in 1973 at the infamous Whiskey a Go-Go in Los Angeles and captures the Stooges at a pivotal point, just as they were about to break up. Iggy & the Stooges careen out of control as the singer taunts the audience and the band tries to keep it together. A handful of rarities, such as "Head On," are featured in addition to a selection of material drawn mainly from Raw Power, but the actual songs aren't that important -- it's how the band sounds, and they do sound raw, abrasive, and frightening. While the average person might think of Buffalo, NY, for its frigid winters and its contributions to the world of professional football, the initiated know Buffalo best for its outsized role in hardcore’s history. The city has produced more than its fair share of genre-defining acts, not least of which was the criminally short-lived, under-documented, and wildly innovative Cinderblock, whose members would go on to such legendary bands as Snapcase, Buried Alive, Earth Crisis, Terror, and more. Thirty years after their initial existence, Cinderblock has reconvened in order to commit their music to vinyl for the first time. Breathe The Fire is a collection of six songs originally conceived in the early ’90s, re-recorded by the band with accomplished producer Jay Zubricky at the helm. If you’re looking for a band that embody everything hardcore punk should be, then you’re looking for Birds in Row. Sonically, they’re fearless. Lyrically, they’re as poetic as they are recusant. And live, they’re a ruthless force, matching the power of their music with boundless, must-see energy. After debut album You, Me & the Violence sparked listeners’ imaginations, 2018 follow-up We Already Lost the World was an unyielding inferno of brazen ideas. Metal Hammer UK called it “intelligent, poignant art,” writing that “this downward spiral changes pace and weight at every turn.” It screamed for mutual respect in a world of increasingly extreme political divides, and used the vehicles of punk, post-hardcore and post-metal to carry its cries. Now comes Gris Klein. Birds in Row’s third full-length album is their most genre-bending and timely declaration yet. “Water Wings” opens, its scraping guitar strums a ticking clock, counting down to the inevitable barrage of hardcore to follow. “Noah” revs up over its six gargantuan minutes. Its singing slowly spirals into apoplectic screeches. “Trompe l’oeil” is half folk, half punk, and “Winter Yet” has no qualms about busting out seismic metal guitars at its climax. It’s an amorphous beast of an album: always unpredictable, but never out of character for this creative collective. Gris Klein’s lyrics were sculpted by the Covid-19 pandemic, eloquently summarizing the cruel and sometimes nonsensical nature of mental illness. “Trompe l’oeil”, for example, sings, “Most of the times I feel lonely are when my friends are around.” “This is the exact moment where you should feel like you’re surrounded by people you love and you’re not alone,” the band add. “It asks, ‘If I can’t feel loved in this specific moment, then when can I feel that?’” Gris Klein is a portrait of a world enduring its most chaotic era in a generation. Yet throughout, the Birds in Row manifesto is the same as it’s always been: love each other. “We really want people to know that they’re not alone, and that they can count on each other,” they say. “The way we treat each other is political. It’s OK to trust each other. All the movies about catastrophes show people turning against each other, but that’s not what would happen. When people are in the shit, they help each other. That’s what we’re trying to transmit with this record: hold each other’s hands.” Not even a world-shaking pandemic could damage Birds in Row’s invention, compassion and brutality. With a mission in mind, Speed is setting out to put Australian hardcore on the map. Formed in 2019, the Sydney-based band has a no-holds-barred approach and enticing sound that makes them standouts in the genre. Composed of vocalist Jem, bassist Aaron Siow, guitarists Josh Clayton and Dennis Vichidvongsa, and drummer Kane Vardon, Speed showcases a tough exterior, but amplifies their sense of identity, and community in everything they do. Following the release of their demo in 2019, the band teamed up with U.S. label Flatspot Records for a two-song EP in 2020 and they joined forces again for Gang Called Speed. Recorded with Elliott Gallart at Chameleon Studios, the six songs on the EP are centered around recognizing who you are in this world, taking ownership of that identity and not letting anyone tell you otherwise. Drawing influence from old-school acts like Biohazard and Merauder just as much as bands like Trapped Under ICE, the band is putting forth pit-ready music.

Fake3 – Florida Untitled is the third issue of the zine/compilation edited and published by experimental artist Cristiano Grim. It features an essay curated by photographer Stefano Lemon who explored the last punk communities based in South Florida at notorious venues such as La Rosas, Churchill’s Pub, Space Mountain and The Gramps in Miami, Respectable Street in West Palm Beach, Beer Punx in Fort Lauderdale, Lozer Lounge in Pompano Beach. Poignant black and white photography, transformed by the hands of the legendary American graphic artist Zach Hobbs. Hobbs created an iconoclastic collage where the eucharistic adoration is matched with the holy rituality of moshing. A timeless punk, without sex gender nor race, perched on a tower of beer protected by blood, sweat, chains and loud prayers raged against gentrification.

Over the past four decades, the Pacific Northwest has been responsible for producing a specific sound and mindset that has permeated throughout hardcore. This tradition has been passed down the upper echelon of Interstate 5 by bands such as Brotherhood, Undertow, and Trial. The tradition has endured in modern times, but has not seen a worthy predecessor since the youth-crew revival of the mid-2000s. Enact is a straightedge hardcore band from Portland, Oregon, who have taken up the mantle of continuing the area’s legacy with veteran members of the West Coast hardcore scene whos contributions include bands like Blue Monday, GET THE Most, Cutting Through, Dying FOR IT, Dance FOR Destruction, and Xcauterizex. On the record, the Pacific Northwest tradition can be heard in guitarist Kyle’s songwriting, which can be attributed to his tenure in the area; however, Enact draws influence from the Revelation Records/1980s hardcore scene through bands like Bold and Judge, with the refreshing melodic elements found in bands like Burn and Turning Point. The lyrics are channeled through the lens of singer Rikki’s lived experience as a Chicana and include ideas about straight edge as a catalyst for personal growth and healing from trauma, intersectional veganism, challenges to political apathy, and gun violence’s connection to toxic masculinity. The band and label are proud to release this crucial expression of radical politics and urgent ideals.
