"Old City, New Ruins" takes its title from Rome, the city where the band is based. It depicts the contemporary ruins of the capital, yet it's merely a pretext to expose the complexities of everyday life common to Western societies and their major cities, foremost among them. The album unfolds episode by episode, driven by the need to express anger and frustration, but also the antidotes to them. Social references abound, as well as intimate reflections and even profound investigations into the psychoses of the marginalized and abandoned. It tells the story of collective strength, musically expressed through a choral quality that runs deep in the band."Old City, New Ruins" is a unique hardcore album, inspired both by emerging currents of the genre - such as Comeback Kid, Turnstile, Trapped Under Ice - and by the European and Northern European heavy tradition - like Kvelertak, Turbonegro - to the pantheon of influences of Feldspar: Nirvana, Motorhead, Gorilla Biscuits, Slayer and everything in between. The album consists of ten songs, with bellicose episodes alternating with cathartic moments, explosions of energy accompanied by timeless slogans, songs for celebration and songs for war, moments for reflection, and others for denunciation. All of this alternates within the ten tracks preceding the instrumental that gives the album its title, also the final track of the record, a sort of Carpenteresque ballad that serves as the soundtrack to visualize the marvelous and creepy ruins Feldspar speaks of. Production note: for the album, Feldspar worked alongside Nick Terry, a legendary figure in the English music scene, known for his productions with Ian Brown/Stone Roses, The Libertines, Turbonegro, Simian Mobile Disco, Kvelertak, Peaches, and more. His involvement adds international depth to the project. The artwork was entrusted to Chris Wilson, an American illustrator renowned for his work on covers for bands like MindForce, Scowl, Combust, and Gel, essentially the cream of the crop of contemporary American hardcore.

In 2004, California-based indie band Golden Shoulders followed up their highly acclaimed debut with their second album, Friendship Is Deep. Now, on the twentieth anniversary of its release, the album most requested by their fans for a vinyl release is finally set for one on Unspun Heroes. Described as “one of the great semi-lost albums of the 21st Century”, the album showcases singer, songwriter, and band mainstay, Adam Kline’s knack for lyrical hooks and penchant for catchy melodies. But, like friendship, this is deeper than its pop sensibilities might suggest.

From the moment the opening track I Will Light You On Fire opens with its simple piano refrain and vocal harmonies you know you’re listening to something worthy of further exploration. From this building of tension between its temporary aural chaos and the beauty that ultimately emerges, you’ll be hooked. Yet, scratch beneath the surface and you’ll find this is an album that carries with it a political, pro-peace, and pro-humanity message, albeit somewhat more satirical than you might expect of a band hailing from America’s West Coast. This is particularly notable on tracks such as Golden Soldiers and the Committee, where Kline’s turn of phrase and wit shines through, cleverly weaving words so they create detailed poetic mosaics.

Golden Shoulders is a loose and ever-changing lineup of international talent, with Kline as the kingpin and sole songwriter. Given the pedigree of those whose talents grace the album – among them, Todd Roper and Greg Brown (Cake), Josh Klinghoffer (PJ Harvey, Rhcp, Pearl Jam), Neal Morgan (Joanna Newsom, Fleet Foxes), and Dan Elkan (Broken Bells) – it’s no surprise the compositions and attention to detail present in each and every one of the 14 songs is top notch. It’s this pleasing mix of accomplished individuals, and their mishmash of influences, which lend a pinball effect to the set of stylistically diverse songs on Friendship Is Deep. Collectively though, the music you’ll hear has a focus, one that channels late 90’s Brendan Benson, the poppier side of 80’s Violent Femmes, and even the mid-60’s flair of the Beatles’ Rubber Soul.

Confronting the dark corners of our world with unflinching defiance comes Austin, Texas’s own Starving Wolves to flip the sound of punk upside down with their new LP, The Fire, The Wolf, The Fang. The kickoff track, “Nothing More,” opens with guitars and horns paying homage to traditional Mexican and Latin American music, and is soon joined by militaristic drums, evoking images of a coming showdown in a spaghetti western film. Then singer and lyricist David Rodriguez kicks into a raging punk-rock fury by tearing his throat raw singing for the downtrodden of the world: “Raised in fear! Bathed in blood! Crucified, we are reborn!” It sets an apocalyptic tone for a raw, relentless punk-rock record that confronts widespread social issues like police brutality (“Burn The Stations”), support for those struggling with their mental health or facing suicidal ideation (“Please Listen”), and personal issues of cultural identity (“Mixed Blood”). In the latter, Rodriguez draws upon his Mexican-American heritage, singing in both English and Spanish to articulate his experience to speakers of both languages, connecting racism faced by young people to the brutal history of colonialism in the Americas. In releasing songs from the record, Starving Wolves have literally put their money where their mouths are, donating to efforts to support mental health for indigenous youth by building skate parks on reservation land, and providing a positive athletic and creative outlet for kids in vulnerable populations. Forceful and dark, yet with an undying spirit of resilience, the journey of The Fire, The Wolf, The Fang is ultimately a cathartic experience, and a scream of survival and hope for those left behind in a world that can feel bleak.

What we don't have here is "Omelette Punk," or "Country-Rawk," or Anything but stripped-down Rock'n'roll from Missouri's Still Animals. In a perfect world, real kids everywhere are dancing to it on real radios while ditching real lame study hall, and they Look Kool doin’ it. Crust punk originates from the misty moors and factory cities of the UK. Since the '80s, countless bands have been established to play their dirty apocalyptic ruckus in the vein of Amebix, Antisect, and Axegrinder. At the same time, across the ocean, in the squats of New York’s Lower East Side, bassist John John Jesse founded Nausea.

Svart Records is releasing Nausea’s two legendary EPs in 12” format for the first time ever, including the Cybergod 7” from 1991 - with a bonus track, "Here Today," from the same recording sessions - and the Lie Cycle 7” from 1992. All tracks are remastered from the original, untouched studio tapes by Jack Control (Darkthrone, Kohti Tuhoa, Fear). Tribal and rocking apocalyptic crust for apocalyptic times.

The Cybergod lineup might be the most legendary era of Nausea, where the tracks reach almost epic proportions. The EP is pretty much the blueprint of crust, where Vic Venom’s hypnotic and rocking guitar riffs meet the tribal drumming of Roy Mayorga. Al’s and Amy’s dueling vocals spit out timeless issues dealing with consumerism and the hypocrisies of organized religions. Musically, the Lie Cycle EP rocks out more in the faster and straightforward style, where Discharge meets Motörhead, and lyrics reflect the times when war and nuclear destruction are still the plague of mankind.

Nausea’s timeline lasted only seven years, but they managed to create a cult following with their true dedication to the punk scene and played shows in the squats of Europe and the eastern part of Europe. Their music is timeless, unpleasant music for unpleasant times, but hey! At least it’s more fun to rock out to the apocalypse!

Last House is the third album from Sacramento’s Th’ Losin Streaks. The album was recorded at Louder Studios in Grass Valley, California, with Tim Green behind the board. Green played piano on several tracks, and Anton Barbeau—a friend of the band since the beginning—plays organ on some cuts. All of the band members—Tim Foster, Stan Tindall, Mike Farrell and Brian Machado—contributed to the songwriting, and the album also features a cover of The Weeds classic “It’s Your Time.” The album cover and other photos were shot by their pal (and Bay Area punk legend) Al Sobrante. Garrison was born in Boston during the heyday of the prolific, late ‘90s, post-hardcore scene. Shortly after forming, the band found themselves signed to Revelation Records where they released their first EP, The Bend Before The Break. The EP was well received among fans and critics and made a place for itself as a notable release for the post-hardcore movement. The Bend Before The Break opens with “Serious Heavy Drama,” which immediately hooks you with its melody, and slowly builds to a brooding and emotional breakdown where singer Joseph Grillo screams his words in a final emotional crescendo. The EP rises with pop melodies such as “Harlow” (a song that remained a fan favorite even after three more releases) and ends with the somber and dark “Untitled,” embracing more of a Midwest-emo theme, and bringing to mind a band like Mineral. Though Garrison went on to release numerous albums on Revelation Records, Iodine Recordings, and Simba Recordings,The Bend Before The Break remained their most popular release. The record harnessed a raw and genuine youthful energy. Nearly 23 years later, Iodine Recordings presents The Bend Before The Break for the first time as a full-length LP, including “You’re Devastated, I’m Sure” and “Untitled,” previously unavailable on vinyl. Silverfish were Scottish powerhouse vocalist Lesley Rankine, guitarist Andrew "Fuzz" Duprey, bassist Chris P. Mowforth and drummer Stuart Watson. They formed in the UK in 1988 and were key to the Camden "lurch" scene ; Grunge before it was "grunge". Lesley was a pioneering, outspoken feminist who popularized the slogan "Hips, Tits, Lips, Power". Not long after their formation, Silverfish gathered a huge following due to their unique sound, which had nods to Ac/dc, Dolly Parton, Russ Meyer and the Birthday Party. Their uncompromising sound was in stark contrast to the gentler more commercial sound of other UK bands. Silverfish's sound owed more to metal, hardcore punk and the industrial sounds of Ministry...demonstrated by Al Jourgensen remixing their 2003 single "Crazy". What they were doing, was raw....Fuzz's manic combination of phaser and fuzzbox backed up by Chris' thick and juicy basslines and Stu's sturdy economical drum beats topped off by Lesley's unique vocals and the ferocity with which she propelled herself around the stage. In 1977 The Adverts sent a five song cassette they recorded at a rehearsal to Chiswick Records. Chiswick chose not to pick up the band and the tape sat at the label’s headquarters until October 2022 when the tape was auctioned on eBay. The winning bidder was Henry Rollins who, upon hearing the tape, contacted TV Smith (the band’s singer and principal songwriter) and got permission to release the tracks. The tape was transferred at Tonal Park in Maryland and mastered by Mikey Young in Australia and it sounds incredible in all its raw glory.
The Adverts were one of the original Class of ’77 UK punk bands and they were arguably one of the best. Their singles and debut album, Crossing The Red Sea With The Adverts, are all time classics of the genre. Rehearsal Tape is the first time the band was ever recorded. In The Red and 2.13.61 are over the moon to have the opportunity this punk rock artifact on vinyl. Pressed on red vinyl and limited edition.

The 4 songs that make up Monster Squad’s “All Out Of Control” were written during extensive touring and shortly after the band released their influential 2004 LP “Strength Through Pain.” Monster Squad went to legendary Bart Thurber (Spazz, Capitalist Casualties, Neurosis) at House of Faith in Oakland to record the EP. These songs represented a slight departure from the speed that fans got to know on “Strength Through Pain.” The title track “All Out of Control” was a different side for Monster Squad, showcasing more anthemic (and much slower) songs than the breakneck, frenetic pace of their previous works. The band utilized ‘call and response’ vocal patterns which quickly became and remains one of the band’s most popular songs. The band continued to explore new ideas, such as incorporating a cowbell on “Church and State,” which talks about the overwhelming presence and oppression that organized religion has in politics. “Gotta Get Out” focuses on the ruts people find themselves in - nowhere to go to escape daily life with the inability to control anxious and hopeless feelings “All Out Of Control” has been out of print since 2006 and fans have been clamoring for a reissue for many years. This new 12” 45rpm version, remastered by Jack Shirley (Sweat, Deafheaven, Gouge Away) at The Atomic Garden, has a completely new layout. Monster Squad used images from the photo session of the original release and scans of the original lyric sheets written in 2005. The band also stumbled upon a collage from 1982 that the legendary collage maestro Winston Smith (Dead Kennedys, etc) made, titled “Security Control” which was a perfect fit, and is included in this new artwork. Escalate is a vegan, straight-edge hardcore band out Hungary, formed in 2020. They are the first and only fully vegan, straight-edge band in the country’s history. Their goal was to bring radical vegan and leftist ideas to the scene. The band is inspired by the political XVX bands of the ’90s and early 2000s just as much as current heavy hardcore bands. If you don’t know Sick Thoughts, you don’t know punk. The band is the mighty Drew Owen. Baltimore born and bred, he then up and moved to the swamps of New Orleans while still a teenager. The general consensus was he’d be another casualty of The Big Easy decadence, and would soon be seen hitting up tourists for money on Bourbon Street with a dog on a rope. But somehow he got hooked up with the best (worst?) folks in the city and kept making great music. That, and the fact that forty-ounce bottles just bounce off his head, have kept him alive. Rock and roll romance and the promise of socialized health care sent him to the (imaginary?) home of Killed By Death punk, Helsinki, Finland. Which makes perfect sense—this album is like the perfect KBD record, full of buzzsaw guitars, machine gun drums and hooks that hit like a tire iron. Owen’s brand of aural early-20s angst, with doses of Zero Boys, Reatards, and early Crüe, mixed with the stench of the streets, has never sounded better. This album clearly puts Sick Thoughts on top of the punk heap. It’s Owen’s world—get in it!

Since 2015, Berlin’s Cuntroaches have defiled countless venues across Europe and the UK, playing festivals and touring relentlessly.
