Originally released by Razor Records in 1983, Shock Troops proved to consist of song after song which would each become anthems of the burgeoning Oi! scene and far beyond. Before Circus Lupus landed on DC’s venerable Dischord Records, the group’s original Midwest lineup recorded a full LP's worth of songs less than a year after forming. With the demise of DC’s Ignition in the late 80’s, bass player Chris Thomson headed to Madison, WI for college. Before leaving DC, he dove headfirst into being a vocalist fronting the short- lived throwback punk/hardcore project Fury. Chris served up pointed and profound Tony Cadena-inspired screeds about betrayal, disappointment and poseurs all set to a soundtrack of furiously primitive and chaotic music supplied by members of the DC punk band Swiz. Brief yet influential, this band marked Chris’s switch to vocals, putting him on course to front Circus Lupus and claim a notable spot in the DC punk timeline of the late 20th century. Soon after arriving in Madison, Thomson was invited to join a new project started by friends Chris Hamley, Arika Casebolt, and Reg Shrader. Circus Lupus marked a change in direction from the familiar sounds of DC punk that Thomson had been associated with for years. The newly formed group looked to noisier Touch & Go and Homestead bands for inspiration, aligning themselves with bands from Chicago, Louisville and Milwaukee. One early supporter of the band described the new group as “profoundly familiar yet uncategorizable. Like if the Germs had gone to college and never got pulled into hard drugs and suicidal behaviors.” The original Circus Lupus lineup played a dozen shows and recorded these songs with Eli Janney at Inner Ear studios in August of 1990 while on a brief tour. Within a year, the band would decide to permanently relocate to Washington DC, where they felt they had more opportunities. Reg opted to move to Chicago and would ultimately join the Touch and Go band Seam. Old friend Seth Lorinczi (Vile Cherubs) would become their new bass player, forming the version of the band that most listeners are familiar with. While a few of these ended up on their first single, the rest were shelved, some later to be rerecorded with Seth and released on Dischord. LG Records is proud to have helped this notable recording see the light of day. The original tapes were recovered by Ian MacKaye and transferred by Darren Edwards. Tim Green remixed and remastered the original recordings at Louder Studios in California. 180-gram black vinyl with 28pt Tip-On sleeve and heavy printed inner jacket.

Kjehl Johansen, guitarist and songwriter for the Circlons, first surfaced in 1978 with the influential minimalist punk band THE Urinals. Kjehl went on to play in other notable projects such as Trotsky Icepick, which released 7 albums on SST Records, and the lo-fi pop trio Narrow Adventure, who have a current album out on Austin-based Spacecase Records. His latest project is the Circlons, featuring Hunter Crowley on drums, Steve Andrews on rhythm and lead guitar, and TOM Hofer on bass. These seasoned veterans played in Trotsky Icepick, THE Last, and the Leaving Trains. The Circlons’ first release explores the dark underbelly of the music business in all its cynicism and glory. On the lead-off track, “I Wanna Be On Your Radio (Not In Your Arms),” vocalist John Talley-jones (Urinals, 100 Flowers) plants his tongue firmly in cheek and portrays a ruthless careerist using his girl- friend’s tears to write a song and get a record deal. True to form, our antagonist dumps the girl and doesn’t look back as told in this taut, rocking pop song. Next up is the title track where singer Adam Marsland (cockeyed Ghost) uses the weather and the natural disasters of Los Angeles to wearily describe a music executive leaving behind a trail of emotional carnage. Featuring a string quartet, this song is aptly titled “When Only the Music Is Pretty.” Lisa Kekaula’s (bell-rays) vocals on “Blue Cheer” take a serious turn and will make the hair on the back of your neck stand up. This R&B-influenced song takes its inspiration from those who have survived the cruelty of domestic violence as they try to find their voice and have their music heard. The EP finishes with an epic improvisation inspired by the German band Can. Nestled in the swirling chaos of sounds, Barbara MANNING’s spoken words come to us from the void of creation and self-doubt, beyond death and time. Heavy stuff!

“Oddities, Abnormalities And Curiosities” is an absolutely fresh and honest album is often overlooked. There's still the old playfulness and anarchic aggressiveness ("Brick", "Career Day"), paired with an ironic wink, and the rough edges that will probably protect them from commercial frenzy this time too. If Keith then goes back to work frustrated, it's not at least your fault, tight-fisted ignorants. Full of blazing guitars, thundering drums and ear-piercing screams, and while it isn't entirely slam dance worthy like their earlier albums, any real fan should appreciate this as a true punk rock piece of art. Circle Jerks fans, who remembered the band for their short street anthems and sarcastic political songs of the early 80's seem to forget that in 1995 when this record was recorded, Reagan wasn't in the white house. Sure, things weren't perfect politically, but the Circle Jerks weren't known for their political dissent. They sang about everything. They were the party band, and on Oddities it shows.

While the average person might think of Buffalo, NY, for its frigid winters and its contributions to the world of professional football, the initiated know Buffalo best for its outsized role in hardcore’s history. The city has produced more than its fair share of genre-defining acts, not least of which was the criminally short-lived, under-documented, and wildly innovative Cinderblock, whose members would go on to such legendary bands as Snapcase, Buried Alive, Earth Crisis, Terror, and more. Thirty years after their initial existence, Cinderblock has reconvened in order to commit their music to vinyl for the first time. Breathe The Fire is a collection of six songs originally conceived in the early ’90s, re-recorded by the band with accomplished producer Jay Zubricky at the helm. With tight grooves, adept melodic sensibilities, and a pummeling heaviness that presaged nearly the entire breadth of ’90s hardcore, the record is a critical document of one of hardcore’s most exciting and transitional periods. Charlie Manning is Chubby AND THE Gang. The 30-something-year-old born-and-bred Londoner kicked off the project in 2019 with the intention of blending hardcore punk with the most infectious elements of ’70s rock ‘n’ roll and doo-wop. Charlie brought in a “gang” of rotating instrumentalists performing on the albums Speed Kills (2020) and The Mutt’s Nuts (2021), both released through Partisan Records. Fast forward to now, and for the release of the upcoming album And Then There Was..., Chubby AND THE Gang joins long-running hardcore label Flatspot Records. The album is 16 songs written and performed by Charlie, produced by Jonah Falco, and recorded and mixed by James Atckinson. It’s a mix of control and chaos, love and loneliness, rage and vulnerability. The songs scream to be heard in a live setting, but feel just as at home playing over the speakers of a dimly lit local pub. “There’s A Devil In The Jukebox” is a roaring punk track. “The Bonnie Banks” storytelling nature leads to repetitive refrain that is begging to be shouted along with. There’s the raucous and simply put “Anticop.” An expansive, drawn-out moment of facing mortality on “To Fade Away.” And the record ends with an emotive piano ballad in “Cocaine Sunday.” Throughout And Then There Was..., Charlie exposes his prowess for melody and exposition of true self.

his energetic punk band originated from Hitchin in Hertfordshire in 1978 and kept their good-natured Sex Pistols-inspired vision active well into the mid-1980s. The band released their debut EP, Puppets Of War, on their own Gargoyle label in 1981, followed by their fabulous second single, Reality, on Step Forward. They then signed to Secret for several more excellent releases including debut album Chronic Generation which reached #53 on the UK chart in 1982. The group are probably best remembered for their 1982 single, Jet Boy, Jet Girl (with English lyrics set to the Plastic Bertrand tune, Ca Plane Pour Moi). Chron Gen split up in 1984.

In early 1982 I was having my usual 1 pm breakfast with disk jockey Rodney Bingenheimer at a very ordinary Denny's coffee shop when the visiting German director Uli Edel dropped by with Christiane Felscherinow in L.A. to promote the film Christiane F. (Wir Kinder von Bahnhof Zoo). Edel had intended to tour with the young actress Nadja Brunckhorst but her father had vetoed the trip, so the real Christiane F. went, swearing to keep clean. We found out much later, she didn't. Over pancakes, Rodney mischievously suggested to the still teenaged Christiane that she should make a record. And Posh Boy across the table could make it happen! I made one phone call to then New York based David Javelosa of Posh Boy act Los Microwaves who leapt at the opportunity at producing a high profile release that could be as dada as he liked on a budget of USD l000. Second release on Robert Pollard's new Splendid Research label is a vinyl & CD reissue of a 1984 demo cassette by Children's Crusade, post-punk teenage band of Guided By Voices' Doug Gillard. The Cleveland guitarist went on to record for Scat, Homestead and Restless Records with the bands Death of Samantha, Cobra Verde, My Dad Is Dead, and Gem, before joining GBV (1996-2004), then Nada Surf (2010-2016), then rejoining GBV (2016-present), as well as playing on albums by Richard Buckner, Neko Case and others. 1980s Cleveland was a hotbed for indie rock, following in the Northern Ohio footsteps of Pere Ubu, The Dead Boys, The Styrenes, Mirrors and Devo. "Children’s Crusade was a fleeting blotch on the wild, mid-80s Cleveland underground music scene, slowly seeping through like a drop of oil on the uniformly black jeans of that era – noticeable only after it settles, spreads, and you realize it won’t come out in the wash."

One of the most legendary and longest lasting of English anarcho-punk acts, Chaos UK was formed in the southwest fishing port town of Portishead, near Bristol, in 1979, their lightning-speed protest anthems leading to top-ranking status internationally, most especially in Japan, where they influenced a range of emerging local hardcore bands. This compilation gathers the best of their Japan singles issued in the 1990s and early 2000s, including the ‘King For A Day,’ ‘Kanpai,’ ‘Making Half A Killing’ and ‘The Dangerous Study’ EPs, as well as bonus tracks culled from the Punk’s Not Dead compilation.
