Disposition stands as the final installment of the School Drugs , four-part full-length venture Funeral Arrangements. “I called a local funeral home to ask if the term ‘disposition’ was commonly used in the industry,” says School Drugs vocalist Josh Jurk. The director was a little surprised by the question. He said “yes” with some reservation. When I asked him why, he noted that it’s more of an insider term and derives its meaning from disposal, and the bereaved most likely wouldn’t be thrilled by the insinuation.” Opening the 7” record, “With Sympathy” admonishes the callousness of those involved

in an industry of death. Following close behind, “Feel Like Shit” is derived from a real- life conversation Josh had in therapy. The final track, “Funeral Arrangements,” reads

something like a hardcore ode to NOFX’s “The Decline”—an over 5-minute journey through various movements, tempos, and emotions.

Following up their Lukko cassette from 2021, Sorry State presents the debut vinyl from Joensuu, Finland’s Valtatyhjiö. While Valtatyhjiö takes inspiration from furious 80s Finnish hardcore punk, they don’t allow reverence for the classics to box in their sound, crafting a unique and instantly identifiable blend of hardcore, punk, metal, and rock and roll. The title track leads off Kuristusleikki by going straight for the jugular, but by the second song, “Petoksen Messias,” the scope widens, bringing in black metal touches and double bass drumming, the creative and tasteful deployment of which is a hallmark of Valtatyhjiö’s sound. On the b-side, “Viilto Kerrallaan” has a big riff and a rock-and-roll swing, while “Riite” closes the EP on an ominous note, sounding like a more hateful version of label-mates Zorn. Like Zorn, Valtatyhjiö’s music floats between hardcore, punk, and metal seamlessly and organically. While those genres can feel like they’ve been done to death, Valtatyhjiö finds their voice in the spaces between and across them, their originality granting them direct access to the intensity at this music’s core.

Girls At Our Best! were one of the greatest and most influential bands to emerge in the early 1980s as part of a new wave of independent acts. DJ John Peel championed them, playing their singles repeatedly and inviting them to record a session for his programme. Wry vocalist Judy Evans and brutal yet melodic guitarist James Alan who’d met at art college in Leeds fronted Girls At Our Best!, the proto-Indie band that formed from the ashes of Alan’s 1977 punk band SOS! Pleasure, the sole album, reached number two in the Indie Chart. It was an album so different from the rest of the post-punk indie pack that you can still play it now and completely baffle new listeners. As John Peel said about Roxy Music, it just doesn’t seem to relate to anything else.

Skingraft was a band from Rochester, New York who made jarring, technical, irregular death metal. Three teenagers who spent the frigid, upstate winters mastering arcane scales and double bass patterns, their elaborate, dynamic songs pair howls and blast beats with brooding, minor-key melodies and deviant rhythms. Picture the bludgeon of Entombed's "Left Hand Path," the shattered glass frequencies of Godflesh's "Streetcleaner," and the destabilization of "Remain Sedate" by Roschach. Skingraft recorded these two songs at Rochester's famed Dajhelon Studios during their junior year of high school. Released on the 30th anniversary of this recording session, this 7-inch is the first time these songs have been made publicly available. Guitarist MAT Colbert went on to play in Blurring, Kalibas and Humiliating Moan. Drummer Andy Meyering is a member of Further Damage. Limited edition of 300 copies on colored vinyl. Cover art is silkscreened onto handmade paper stock jackets made from pulped bibles. For every seven copies of Skingraft made, on bible was removed from this world. Includes an insert.

The Slow Death return with a follow up 7" to the "Casual Majesty" LP released earlier this year. The songs come from the "Casual Majesty" recording sessions and features members of prominent punk rock groups such as Dillinger Four, The Raging Nathans, and The Ergs. At the helm of this punk rock pirate ship is the Captain, Jesse Thorson. 2 songs in 6 1/2 minutes drawing on influences of working class Oi anthems, and No Coast pop punk fury. Sometimes rollicking and fun, often dark and somber, The Slow Death carved out their own niche of melodic punk over a decade ago and have not eased up for a moment since. Messthetics moderne / doomtown goes downtown. "If you can opine on the relative merits of Slates versus Hex Enduction Hour (I definitely can), CDG makes music for you. Not that CDG sounds exactly like the Fall (but sometimes they sound a lot like the Fall). For one, CDG often uses funky grooves (like the Zamrock-ish “Degraded Dialect”), something the Fall didn’t tend to do, but that was a big part of that UK DIY / post-punk / messthetic (although CDG resides in Portland, this is very Anglophonic). If you have any fucking clue about what I’m going on about right now, you need this. It’s exactly how on the nose you want it to be, right down to the distinctive sleeve design and the sneaky pop hit that closes the record.
