After countless hours of data driven market research it was determined that the wild success of the first Retail Simps album, Reverberant Scratch was 82.6% due to the cheeky and iconic album cover, as such the group was faced with a dilemma. Using focus groups funded by the Center for Odd Human Behaviour (cohb), the group surmised that the man pictured on said cover, none other than Montreal born chanteur JOE Chamandi, reminded the typical unsophisticated commoner of their ne’er do well uncle, and it is this sense of uncanny familiarity that drove people to purchase the record. Upon first needle drop it was revealed to house an abhorrent and obfuscatingly decrepit take on roots rock. Armed with this keen analytical knowledge, the band and their creative team harnessed the boundless marketability of the Trashmen, Dancing Cigarettes and 2 Live Crew to adorn their new disc with an equally palatable and deceptive frontal armour, provoking the straight laced garage rocker of yore to pay the price of entry. Once the branding and visual identity of this little package invited potential listeners in, they were met with incorrigible confusion. You see, after being pigeonholed by the punk paparazzi as a lowly party band, the Simps were tasked with driving home their knack for fervent versatility. This new record captures a group, in the clutches of maturity, boasting their emotional depth, triumphant chops and humble servitude to the trade of rock n roll clowning. Recalling the double speak of VU’s murder mystery, the soul bent lament of Fred Cole and the bastardized funk of Minutemen, the Simps have thusly widened their sonic palate and created yet another masterpiece of the modern age. This is the southern soul of Memphian tradesmen flipped on it’s snowy head, conjuring an impure regionalism that was largely thought to be dead and gone. Blue Dolphin was a wild, iridescent punk band from Austin, Texas circa 2016. Over the course of a year, they created a buzzing, liberatory sound, a dark bloodmix of melodic ease and existential gloom. This pairing suggests monuments like 'Peace?' or 'Is This Real?' but Blue Dolphin found this path all on their own, through trust and reliance, that practice space unity that the best bands build simply through the joy of playing with each other. At times, the songs barrel along as if the band is struggling to keep their instruments under control, an unrestrainable, breathless frenzy of notes. Widely considered in Japan to be one of the all-time greatest punk records, 1981's Don’t Eat Food! remains shockingly unknown to the rest of the world. Led by literate but unhinged Machida Machizo, a magnetic stage presence who sang in a thick Osaka dialect that sounded like nothing else at the time, INU took Japan by storm in the late '70s with their powerful and often belligerent live show. Their membership changed frequently but INU's final lineup -- the group that recorded Don't Eat Food! -- was sharp as a knife, and the band's airtight debut still wows forty years later.

It's hard to describe INU's unique sound in comparison to other bands, but maybe imagine a more fidgety Richard Hell & The Voidoids jamming with PiL? Better yet, just listen for yourself.

This first-ever fully-licensed edition has been remastered from the original tapes and cut by Kevin Gray and includes an 8-page booklet with never-before-seen photos, lyrics in English and Japanese, and liner notes by Syojiro Ishibashi in English and Japanese.

Legendary Finnish hardcore punk band Bastards’ discography to be released in a glorious box set in December

Bastards was one of the first Finnish hardcore punk bands coming from Finland in the early 80’s. The band released three albums between 1982-1983: Harhaa (1982, originally only on cassette tape), Järjetön maailma (1983) and Siberian Hardcore (1983). Propaganda Records, the oracle of its time, released the Maailma palaa ja kuolee EP when the band was still active, and some single tracks also appeared on Finnish and international compilations.

Bastards gained international attention and were the first Finnish hardcore band to tour Europe, yet they still ended up quitting the band in December 1983 after just a few active years. Svart Records have now put together all the recorded material by Bastards. Arctic Hardcore – Complete Studio Recordings & Rare Rehearsal Tapes -box set was done as a tight co-operation between the record company and members of the band. The nearly four-hour long compilation contains 136 songs, of which fifty are never released versions or completely unheard material, until now. The box set also contains a thick booklet with the band’s history, lyrics, complete song information and a lot of photos from the band’s active years.

Charlie Manning is Chubby AND THE Gang. The 30-something-year-old born-and-bred Londoner kicked off the project in 2019 with the intention of blending hardcore punk with the most infectious elements of ’70s rock ‘n’ roll and doo-wop. Charlie brought in a “gang” of rotating instrumentalists performing on the albums Speed Kills (2020) and The Mutt’s Nuts (2021), both released through Partisan Records. Fast forward to now, and for the release of the upcoming album And Then There Was..., Chubby AND THE Gang joins long-running hardcore label Flatspot Records. The album is 16 songs written and performed by Charlie, produced by Jonah Falco, and recorded and mixed by James Atckinson. It’s a mix of control and chaos, love and loneliness, rage and vulnerability. The songs scream to be heard in a live setting, but feel just as at home playing over the speakers of a dimly lit local pub. “There’s A Devil In The Jukebox” is a roaring punk track. “The Bonnie Banks” storytelling nature leads to repetitive refrain that is begging to be shouted along with. There’s the raucous and simply put “Anticop.” An expansive, drawn-out moment of facing mortality on “To Fade Away.” And the record ends with an emotive piano ballad in “Cocaine Sunday.” Throughout And Then There Was..., Charlie exposes his prowess for melody and exposition of true self.

Undertow can be considered one of the founding fathers of the straight-edge hardcore scene in Seattle and this year we celebrate the 30th anniversary of their seminal record, At Both Ends. Getting their start in 1990, the band toured the States several times as well as a tour in Europe in 1995 right before they decided to call it quits. At Both Ends is their only full-length and it came out when the band was in full swing. Originally released on the Washington state label Excursion Records, this is the first pressing since it originally came out in the mid ’90s. Pressed on two color ways: a pink-swirl glow-in-the-dark and “Seahawks” colored splatter vinyl.

As outlined in the above description State of Fear had set out on a hardcore path widely copied but never matched throughout 1994-1996. It’s in this period that they attempt their first full length LP which although marred by recording issues and personnel changes, would go on to be regarded by most as an contender for one of the best LP’s of 1990’s in the hardcore punk genre. Volume 2 is this stand-alone LP by the band and features the original artwork of Marald who has also gone on to a famed career in the fine art world, this includes a large 4 page booklet with all lyrics included, and an A2 poster. Did I mention that both Vol. 1 and 2 have been remastered by Jack Control for the highest sound quality possible. These are definitive documents of one of the best hardcore bands to exist.

This two-volume set of records which represents the complete discography of State of Fear couldn’t have come at a better time with the current hardcore/crust scene in the U.S. on the rise once again. A new generation of punks have scoured the filthy depths of the genre to find the classics, and State of Fear ticks every box of a classic hardcore band. Formed from the ex-members of Disrupt and Deformed Conscious, State of Fear adopted a more streamlined hardcore attack than that of either of their former bands, but kept intact the political and dark themes of the crust bands they had come from. This was hardcore made by fans of Swedish bands like Skitlickers, MOB 47, Anti-cimex, and although they definitely wear their influences on their sleeve, they created a sound which was enigmatically their own. Entering the scene in the heyday of the Minneapolis crust explosion spearheaded by Profane Existence in 1994, they immediately made their mark with powerful live showings and a no-bullshit delivery. Volume 1 includes the self titled debut, and the infamous ‘Wallow in Squalor’ EP’s, State of Fear showcase a devastating combination of speed and memorable riffs not seen by another band in America since. Songs like ‘Blood Thirsty System’, ‘Violation’, ‘Consumption’ emboldened a generation of punks in the 90’s, while confirming their feelings of rage at the political system in place, which sadly still stands today. These songs aren’t going to lose appeal until the blood thirsty system falls. Sonarize Records has added a large format 12 page booklet that includes a biography, interviews, lyrics, and hard to find photos of the band.

The story of northern English band Blitz follows something of an unusual trajectory. Formed in the small industrial town of New Mills in Derbyshire (once known for coal mines, cotton mills and calico bleaching), Blitz began as a hardcore concern, their first two albums considered classics of the ‘street punk’ and Oi subgenres of the early 1980s, but third album Second Empire Justice shifted their sound in a totally unexpected post-punk/new wave direction, with intricate arrangements, greater musical complexity and a generally softer style. Unfortunately for the group, the album was a commercial failure that spelled their ultimate demise, yet just as the band bit the dust, bassist Neil McLennan and guitarist Nidge Miller formed Rose of Victory with drummer Gary Bowler and engineer Nigel Beverley on vocals, cutting a one-off version of Bowie’s “Suffragette City,” coupled with an equally intriguing Miller instrumental on the flip. Rose of Victory never lasted beyond this initial offering, however, leaving the single a unique memento of their faltering creativity.

This upcoming album is nothing less of a wonderful bouquet of contemptuous elegies who haven't yet found a place on the big, dark web. Truth be told the opinionated armor GBZ has been hiding behind was mostly for show, they’ve always beat around the bush – or as we say in Norwegian: had a walk around the porridge.

The 3-track "Forever" E.P. on Transluscent Red 10" Vinyl is limited to 250 copies and features two new compositions, the title track "Forever" and "My Slum Soul", plus an incendiary new version of an old live favourite "Ink Runs Dry". Folk Devils, the London group that took their name from a well-known academic text on social scapegoating, and who blazed a trail across the UK's independent music scene of the mid-80s with their unique brand of post-punk energy, have returned with their first new music in 35 years. Recorded at London's famous Konk Studios in North London and mixed and co- produced by Grammy Award-winning engineer Rik Simpson, the re-born Folk Devils drew inspiration from the release of their 2016 career retrospective "Beautiful Monsters" and the reactions at subsequent live shows around the UK with kindred spirits Membranes, Inca Babies and The Cravats. Founder members, guitarist Kris Jozajtis and bassist Mark Whiteley, reformed the group by recruiting members of a short-lived 1987 version of Folk Devils; guitarist Nick Clift and drummer John Hamilton. Together with singer Dave Hodgson they soon discovered they had created a well-oiled twin-guitar juggernaut that brimmed with the same restless, twisted blues that characterized the first and second iterations of the band from 1983-87 when they were fronted by the highly underrated and now sadly-departed singer/songwriter Ian Lowery. Hodgson, a fellow transplant from the North-East, had known Lowery in the early 80s prior to Folk Devils, when the two were in their respective post-punk bands Ski Patrol and Parting Shots.

LP + Downloadcode.BONA DISH were a scratchy pop punk group from Hertfordshire villages, brought together by their love of the Velvets, Supremes and each other. They were cool, handsome and gorgeous. The songs are simple but at the same time complex. The two girls, two boy's line-up added a tension that was both sexual and musically fragile. You felt it might all fall apart any second but it rarely did. After their "cassette in a tube" ploy worked for John Peel play, the band released a cassette on InPhaze and disbanded not long after. Collected here is a rediscovered gem showcasing the zest and spontaneity that gripped the UK DiY scene of the time, standing up to their contemporaries like TELEVISION PERSONALITIES, THE HOMOSEXUALS and MARINE GIRLS. This release marks the first vinyl and cd release for Bona Dish, their complete recorded output compiled and newly mastered.
