“In November of 1982, I went into the studio with Government Issue to record what was to be their first full-length album. Up until that time, they had only released the Legless Bull 7-inch EP, and the tape they recorded early 1982 would take over a year and a half to be released as the Make An Effort 7-inch EP. The members of G.I. excelled at driving each other crazy and there was a lot of arguing, but still we had a great session at Inner Ear and we managed to track 20 songs in one day. From the beginning the band had been divided on what to record, and it was only after much debate that they decided to leave off the material they had recorded with the earlier line-ups and only put out 10 new songs. In early 1983 Dischord was strapped for cash, meaning that we could only work on one release at a time. Since all of our money was tied up with the manufacturing of Minor Threat’s Out of Step 12-inch EP, the G.I. record would have to wait. A new DC label, Fountain of Youth expressed an interest in releasing Boycott Stabb, so it was decided to do a ‘split-label’ record. In this case, Fountain of Youth put up the money and we let them use the Dischord Records name to help with context and distribution. It has since been reissued on a number of different labels and formats, but after coming across the master tapes and hearing the songs that had been left off, we thought it would be cool to release the complete session, and to fi nally release the record on Dischord proper. In going through the tapes, I discovered that most of the outtake songs were never mixed, so earlier this year I took the recordings back into the studio. Hearing the separated tracks amazed me. Such great playing and songs! With the technological advances in the recording world making multi-tracking and overdubbing so common, it’s easy to forget that studios could also be used as something more akin to a photo-booth, capturing what was happening at that very moment. Most of the early Dischord sessions were essentially ‘live’ recordings, so the bands had to be able to play, and because the budgets were minuscule, they had to get the songs down in short order. Originally released to a fan base and music press that were unprepared for the band to move on from the punk fury of “Crossing The Red Sea”, The Adverts “Cast Of Thousands” has since been recognized as a lost classic of the time. TV Smith’s cutting observational lyrics and sharp musical instincts saw his song writing grow and move in unexpected directions. The primal thumping was replaced by dynamic and driving drumming, acoustic guitars and probing solos emerged, and Tim Cross joined to add keyboards and fill out the overall sound. The one constant was the pounding throb of Gaye Advert’s bass. Encouraged to experiment by surprise producer Tom Newman (Mike Oldfield “Tubular Bells”) the band found themselves stretching creatively, both in song writing and recording techniques. They might agonize over the sound of recording a match being lit in the middle of one song, while doing a single take of a vocal via a microphone hung in the bathroom for another. Giant choirs were built meticulously over multiple tracks, while the sound of a rat running through the reverb room would be captured forever. The results wrapped some of TV’s best songs in strange and inventive sounds to compliment his anti-pop smarts and rock and roll heart. They did not know it at the time, but the band was falling apart. Tensions would soon rise to the level that replacement players were called in to finish their final tour. Punk fans left them in droves. Critics skewered the singles from the album. Their record label had moved on to the next big thing. Feeling that they had reached a creative peak made the tumble even harder to swallow. Time has been very kind though, and fans discovering punk after the first wave have been able to hear “Cast” for what it is - a brilliant and biting collection of rock and roll. Still full of stomp and swagger even when stripped down on “My Place” or via the anthemic surge of “Television’s Over”, with TV’s hook factory on full display on the anti-love song “Love Songs”, and the band closing the album with the creeping ballad “I Will Walk You Home”; The Adverts had grown from a great punk rock band to a great rock band.

Having played with the likes of influential movers and shakers on the anarcho-punk scene Antisect and Icons of Filth, on their first full-length LP, Birmingham’s Sacrilege established themselves as a unique force to be reckoned with, wreaking havoc on what we could classify as sonic tropes belonging to a spectrum of subgenres dealing in the extremes: hardcore, doom, and thrash. Fronted by Lynda ‘Tam’ Simpson and her seizure-inducing spells injected with a fierce, sociopolitical-cum-mythopoeic banshee bite (but not wanting to understate the line-up of Damian Thompson on guillotine-quick/milkshake thick guitars) - the six-track onslaught is every bit as crushing as the title suggests. From depraved dungeon synth-scapes on opener Lifeline to the planet-flattening funeral toll of The Closing Irony, one question remains: One riff to rule them all? Yes.

Formed in London in 1977 by Mark Perry and Alex Fergusson, then editors of the punk fanzine Sniffin' Glue, Alternative TV was a post-punk group known for incorporating reggae rhythms and pushing the boundaries of the definition of punk toward the experimental and avant-garde. Their first album, The Image Has Cracked, came out originally in 1978 and is a wholly unique piece of British post-punk. Beloved by John Peel, and close confidantes of Throbbing Gristle, Alternative TV is one of the most original and beguiling groups of the era.

Formed in Birmingham in 1976, English punk quartet Suburban Studs built their reputation through fearsome early live gigs, supporting the Pistols and the Clash at the 100 Club, and having the Clash return the favour at a gig the Studs headlined in their home town; they later supported Ac/dc and Judas Priest, among many others. Signing to the independent Pogo label in l977, debut album Slam had 16 brisk originals and a double-time take of the Who’s ‘My Generation’; this edition comes with four bonus tracks taken from their unfinished in-progress second album, which was never released. A must-have for all original punk fans.

Before embracing punk through the influence of bands like the Damned, UK Subs frontman Charlie Harper was active in pub rock groups, so when he decided to cut his debut solo album for Flicknife Records in 1981, he returned to classic rock ‘n’ roll and R&B, cutting an enjoyable covers album with fellow Subs Steve Slack and Pete Davies in tow. Tune in to this long lost gem to catch the other side of Charlie, who delivers one-off takes of Hendrix’s ‘Hey Joe,’ the Doors’ Light My Fire, the Velvets’ ‘Femme Fatale’ and Muddy Waters’ ‘Hoochie Coochie Man,’ among others. The album called "Fish Inn" was originallyreleased in 1984. The leader of the band Michiro Endo anticipated departing from punk rock and created this work, exploring a sound inclined towards psychedelic music, a challenging move that seemed to self-denounce The Stalin's previous style. Higo Hiroshi from Friction was also involved in the band as bassist during this recording. Endo reminisced later about the album as: "More specifically, the main theme was how to kill The Stalin." Following this release, The Stalin disbanded and marked it as their final album. Although the remix version produced by Bill Laswell released in 1986 is generally more highly regarded, P-vine focuses on the original version and reissues it on vinyl with the original artwork for the first time.

First released in 1989, the self-titled EP from Bold features four tracks, which at the time were a new direction for the band. Adding Tom Capone (quicksand/ Beyond) on guitar, the band’s sound evolved away from the traditional Youth Crew anthems heard on Speak Out, as did many of their peers in the scene at that time who were also exploring and pushing their boundaries musically. Recorded in February/March ’89 at Baby Monster Studios, NYC.

Released 20 years ago yet still retaining much of its Oi! impact intact, the debut album and last before a split that would last a number of years by No Future luminaries, Sunderland’s Red Alert is a lesser-known classic in punk history. The locomotive chug and chant of unification in We’ve Got The Power, the metallic burn of Crisis, the acoustic-driven, kitchen-sink bristle of Industrial Slide or the caustic, hypnotic stomp of Rebels in Society exploding with fierce, powder keg intensity. With that in mind, and now pressed on color vinyl, as a prescient feature of not just English culture, but a culture that cuts deep, that stretches far, the art of brutality still lingers loud and clear.

Youth Brigade is an American hardcore punk band formed in Hollywood, Los Angeles, California, in 1980 by the brothers Mark, Adam, and Shawn Stern. The band subsequently founded BYO (Better Youth Organization) as well. The band’s first year of existence was as a six-piece, but they played their first gig as a three-piece on New Year’s Eve 1981 at Godzilla’s nightclub. They were also part of the big BYO extravaganza “Youth Movement ’82” at the Hollywood Palladium, where 3,500 people showed up for an all-Los Angeles bill. In the summer of 1982, after recording three tracks for the first BYO record release, Someone Got Their Head Kicked In compilation, Youth Brigade set out in a big yellow school bus on an ambitious 30-city North American tour with fellow punk band Social Distortion. The now classic 1984 film Another State Of Mind chronicled the event. A premature version of Sound & Fury had been rushed together before the Another State Of Mind tour, but pressing was stopped at 800 copies as the band was not satisfied with the quality of the material and production. After about 30 shows and several breakdowns, they returned home to re-record their debut LP, Sound & Fury, with the legendary record producer Thom Wilson, keeping only four tracks from the original. Sound & Fury, the follow-up version, is now considered one of the greatest punk records of all time not just because of the songs and cultural context, but because it features the hit songs “Sink With California,” “Blown Away,” “Men In Blue (Part 1),” and “What Will The Revolution Change.” Sound & Fury has been remastered from the original analog tapes by Dave Gardner.

By the time Toy Doys issued Bare Faced Cheek as the inaugural LP of their own Nit Records label, bassist Flip had been replaced by Dean Robson and drummer Happy Bob by Martin Yule, with Olga still the vocal focal point. “Yul Brynner Was A Skinhead” is the best of the bunch, “Neville Is A Nerd” and “Quick To Quit The Quentin” are typical Toy Dolls punk piss-takes, and there are digs at a hotel and a local launderette too. Everything is delivered in lightning-fast bursts of energy, poking fun at all and sundry, the Toy Dolls punk way.

Hailing from Sunderland in England’s industrial northeast, the Toy Dolls infused their take on punk with ample doses of working-class humour, the three-chord format a launching pad for witty originals and clever cover tunes. 1983 debut Dig That Groove Baby captures the group at their finest, their twisted rendition of kiddies tune “Nellie The Elephant” topping the indie charts; the title track is an infectious singalong, while “Spiders In The Dressing Room” and “Glenda And The Test Tube Baby” are more irreverent tongue in cheek, all delivered in the peculiar androgynous accent of frontman Michael “Olga” Algar. Arising in the mid-1980s during the second wave of British psychobilly, the Frantic Flintstones was formed in Didcot, outside Oxford, by singer Chuck Harvey and former Meteors drummer Toby Griffin, who soon left. Following a debut EP on Raucous and the chart-topping A Nightmare On Nervous, with drummer Andy Celbo, the group signed to Links just as guitarist Pug Pete joined the fold. Not Christmas, their fourth for Links, is one of their most popular LPs, and rightly so, with ‘Frantic’ mutating Prince Buster’s ‘Madness’ and ‘Blue Christmas’ one of several Xmas-themed numbers. British psychobilly at its best!

Speak Out, originally released in 1988, has been remastered, pressed on color vinyl, and includes a bonus, full-color, 40-page booklet curated by the band, and has been returned to it’s original gatefold layout with an added embossing on the cover.

Svart Records presents the 40th anniversary reissue of Peilitalossa by Musta Paraati. The vinyl edition, limited to 500 copies, is wrapped in a replica of the original cover layout and contains a booklet with accompanying text and rare photos. Peilitalossa is the most important classic gothic rock album to come out of Finland. Musta Paraati began in 1981 and were soon signed by Johanna Kustannus, who released the album, produced by Jimi Sumén and recorded by Risto Hemmi at Finnvox, in 1983. After Musta Paraati split up in 1984, Peilitalossa evolved into one of the most loved cult albums in Finland. It has been reissued on CD in 2001 and in an earlier vinyl edition by Svart in 2012.

Belgian punk innovators Raxola formed in 1977, the name denoting Revolution Axis Opens Lights Ahead, one of only three Belgian punk acts to record an album in the early days. Guitarist/vocalist Yves Kengen, alias Yke, launched the trio with bassist Louis Hubeau and drummer Guy Van Snick, overlapping with the time that Kengen played bass in Bastard with Brian James, who returned to the UK to join London SS and ultimately, The Damned. Raxola’s self-titled debut is a furious, melodic, and intelligent blast of first-waveEuro-punk, a long sought-after classic whose originals go for silly money, now fully ripe for rediscovery.

A fun set of tongue-in-cheek first-wave punk originals, the album also includes a spirited cover version of The Who’s ‘I’m A Boy.’

Originally released on the small “Children Of The Revolution” label back in 1984, Short Sharp Shock is Chaos UK's own undiscussed masterpiece, and their first 12” recorded with the classic Mower/Chuck/Gabba /Chaos line up. Up there along with Discharge’s Hear Nothing,See Nothing, Say Nothing and Disorder’s 1984 Under the Scalpel Blade, straight out of the holy trinity of British 80's Punk: angry, pissed and out of tune like it always should have sounded.

Innovative East LA Chicano punk rockers THE Brat formed in l978 when lead guitarist Rudy Medina and his guitarist nephew Sidney met singer-songwriter Teresa Covarrubias. Together they began penning songs that addressed social inequalities while fusing hardcore sounds with reggae undercurrents and a hint of girl group pop. A gig at the Vex in l98O put them in the orbit of Los Illegals and The Plugz, whose frontman Tito Larriva produced their debut EP Attitudes, making it the first release on his own Fatima Recordz label. A killer set from start to finish, this fully authorized limited edition remastered reissue comes with rare bonus tracks and a printed inner sleeve. Essential!
