If "Joy As An Act Of Resistance" was meant to detail the band's manifesto, the band's highly anticipated third album, "Ultra Mono," is the sound of IDLES heading to the front for these principles, ram in hand. Musically constructed to capture the feel of a hip-hop album (Kenny Beats has also participated in programming on several tracks) the songs have a double language, mixing vitriolic sneers with a direct social comment on the band's past work. Not far below the surface of the slogan they gave themselves, is a deeply complex and brutally relevant album that chews clichés and spits them out in the form of great art for the masses. Active presence and self-acceptance are also at the heart of "Ultra Mono" whose most songs were written in the recording studio, and the phrase "I am I" serves as a lyrical and spiritual mantra. Ultimately "Ultra Mono" is a celebration of the community, the one on which IDLES has been striving to build itself since its beginnings, to form something bigger than itself. As their audience grows, initially attracted by a sense of non-belonging, they create together a diverse congregation of people that offers each of them their place.

Mermaid Chunky are an audiovisual duo made up of artists Freya Tate and Moina Moin. Bathing in milkmaid serenity and improvised chaos, the duo boast of pumping trance rhythms, sad Easter time chicks and seriously arousing sax solos. Much of their cultivation has come out of the mossy club culture of Stroud's SVA and London's Total Refreshment Centre, collaborating with the likes of Alabaster DePlume, Danalogue, Donna Thompson, Grove, Snapped Ankles (UK tour support) and Yama Warashi.

Their debut Faith and Industry album Vest (produced by Capitol K at Total Refreshment Centre), was birthed last year out of a history of improvised cheek and club dexterity forefronting their live shows and audiovisual solstice celebrations, recently captured by British Vogue's 2021 Pride series. Championing this action is the Mermaid Chunky Mothership, a gang of fellow artists and performers, often clad in nauseous satin frills, swamping the stage with french mime and slut drops (Roundhouse 2021, End Of the Road 2021, SVA Solstice always.) The MC gang just scoured their PRS Woman Make Music funding so who knows what they will be stirring up in the heat of summer soup 2022 (the most ducks in a year we will ever experience.) In the spring of 2019 ShitKid - Åsa Söderqvist and Lina Molarin Ericsson - headed over to the US for a couple of shows at the SXSW festival in Austin, TX but ahead of the festival they managed to squeeze in a couple of days in the studio ' first in LA with the legendary the Melvins and then in Austin with Paul Leary of Butthole Surfers. The new album Duo Limbo/'Mellan himmel å helvete' collects the recordings from these two sessions, half of which are ShitKid's first recordings in their native Swedish ' with a set of four songs to start with the band set out to record them in both English and Swedish, clocking in at just over 26 minutes. It's ShitKid's finest work yet with the duo backed by an all star line-up of Buzz Osborne (Melvins) and Dale Crover (Melvins, Redd Kross) on half of the album and Paul Leary and Josh Freese (NIN, Devo, The Replacements etc) on the other half.

Milan, 1979, only two years had passed since the explosion of punk but it seemed like ten years had passed, 1977 had inexorably changed the destiny of a generation of musicians. Milan in those years felt a bit like Manchester, a city in black and white, with monuments grayed by smog, busy and still far from becoming the “Milan to drink” of the mid-80s. The music scene was totally disconnected from the rest of the Italian underground, the bands were born and imploded within a few months. The inputs that arrived thanks to the English weekly New Musical Express and some Italian fanzines were essential to know what happened across the channel almost in real time. The concerts at the 2001 Odyssey, a club where almost all the really important post-punk bands performed, were fundamental to understand and feel part of something that resembled a revolution, a movement that in those years produced little in terms of discography but that today, after almost forty years, we reveal the absolute uniqueness of the proposals of the protagonists of that Milanese season. Sharp guitars, primordial drum machines, synthesizers bought at a high price and 4 tracks cassette recorders were the tools used to affirm their belonging to a creative movement that developed simultaneously throughout Europe.

It was in 2006 that Detroit punks THE SUICIDE MACHINES called it a day after 15 years and six full-throttle, super-charged and confrontational albums. The break didn’t last too long—in 2009, the four-piece reconvened to play the occasional local shows and embarked on a handful of tours. Finally, the band is back with a brand-new album—the first since War Profiteering Is Killing Us 15 years ago! Revolution Spring, the band’s seventh album and Fat Wreck debut, picks up right where they left off—full of blistering, rousing songs finding the band in truly explosive and energetic form. Over the course of a couple of years, the band wrote a total of 30 songs. You'd think Jake Robertson would already have his hands full playing in the likes of Ausmuteants, Leather Towel, School Damage, Drug Sweat et al. But no, evidently there's always time for one more thoroughly wracked project, and Alien Nose Job's focus is as kaleidoscopically scattershot as you'd expect from a man with such a short attention span. Just to confirm: yes, that's a good thing. From the off, we glide through the Coneheads-style Devocore of Television Sets before romping through the jangling lo-fi pop of Weight of the World, which skips and mopes while making like The Clean setting light to their parents' carpet with a magnifying glass. There's also charmingly scruffy soul-pop, chugging sci-fi slop-punk, straight-up college rock balladry and much, much more. But these aren't sketches or tossed-off genre exercises. They're bona fide works of consummate skill that resonate sincerely and effortlessly. Essentially, each song sounds like a challenge to the one that follows, a cry of 'step the fuck up'; Suddenly Everything is Twice as Loud is a treasure trove of mini-masterpieces. Rough as fuck mini-masterpieces, sure, recorded with a cheap drum machine and guitars that sound like rusty drills cutting through power cables, but mini-masterpieces nonetheless. When venerable doyens of the pop establishment make albums of such eclectic scope and genuine songwriting talent, they get called geniuses. When punk as fuck wiseguys like Robertson pull it off, words like 'maverick' get tossed around. Rest assured, his Alien Nose Job project covers both angles. This second album is an instant classic that deserves to be heard far beyond the underground - but if it isn't, who cares? He's probably playing in another seven bands already by the time you read this. I've not heard them yet either, but I can tell you they're all fucking amazing. Just buy this record and join the cult. Hailing from Florida, The Tropics were one of the finest 60s garage bands. Their memorable concerts are still remembered today by the lucky ones who saw them at the time. Between 1965 and 1969, they recorded some explosive and now legendary 45s which are prime examples of garage-rock, teen-beat, folk-rock and proto-psych sounds. THE Lungs have a mantra: “make it visceral,” and with their dynamic live performances and series of independently released EPs, this Los Angeles-based punk power trio has been doing just that since 2016. Driven by the daily hand-to-mouth grind that they and their fellow Angelenos endure, and fueled by the macro volatilities that sparked the anger of so many Americans, The Lungs express their discontent with a surge of infectious post-hardcore dynamism. The band formed after San Fernando Valley based musicians Trevor Howard and Billy Goldstein exchanged some home demos and realized that they were writing music for the same band… all they needed was a drummer. After hearing these demos, it took little convincing for powerhouse drummer Dylan Howard, Trevor’s brother, to agree to join the pair in their mission. The trio quickly set to work on their debut self-titled EP, which they released in 2017. They followed this with 2018’s Bodysnatchers EP, a split 7” with Total Massacre entitled Church + State in 2019, and a slew of kinetic live shows. While THE Lungs’s music is grounded in punk rock, the band borrows the frenetic spirit of hardcore, the immortal energy of rock and roll, and the discordance and rhythmic complexity of post-hardcore, channeling these into an undeniably commanding cacophony that is sure to become the next pandemic. Add to that, they've got something to say, addressing issues ranging from substance abuse to mental health collapse and collective economic pressures. The band has now teamed up with LA record label, Dune Altar, who are thrilled to announce the release of THE Lungs’s debut LP, Psychic Tombs.

When Mark E Smith died in January 2018, an era ended with him. The Fall were an English post-punk band, formed in 1976 in Prestwich, Greater Manchester. They underwent many line-up changes, with vocalist and founder Smith as the only constant member. First associated with the late 1970s punk movement, the Fall's music underwent numerous stylistic changes, often concurrently with changes in the group's line-up. Nonetheless, their music has generally been characterised by an abrasive, repetitive guitar-driven sound, tense bass and drum rhythms, and Smith's caustic lyrics, described by critic Simon Reynolds as "a kind of Northern English magic realism that mixed industrial grime with the unearthly and uncanny, voiced through a unique, one-note delivery somewhere between amphetamine-spiked rant and alcohol-addled yarn." They were always at their best on stage, and this collection, recorded at the Assembly Rooms, Derby in 1994, captures them in full flow!
