When The Steves' two extremely limited (maybe 100-200 of each?) EPs were released back in 1980 and '81 respectively, the squares around Harvard's newsroom were aghast at the audacity of this group. Having the stones to release such crudely-rhythmic, near mechanical and downright terse tunes in the day's often long winded prog rockin' ballad heavy radio reality that were too robotic to be “punk” and too unruly to be anything but was, to say the least, a bold move. Sure to cause an uproar in the halls, protests in the classroom and uninvited dancing in the streets! In the annals of New England's rock journalism, there is not a mountain of coverage on The Steves, certainly not as much as the Alan Parsons Project or Aerosmith, but the fact remains that they were a fully charged powder keg of raw energy and new musical direction that seemed to elude most of the world back then. Not to say they didn't get any light shone on them, they did get a fair amount of airplay on the college stations around Boston and even appeared on the cover of Boston Rock magazine. It is Iron Lung Records' distinct pleasure to offer the modern world a new chance to discover the ever vital and effervescent music of The Steves' initial EPs along with a third EP of songs never released on vinyl until now that were recorded at the time or shortly after the initial sessions. Disposition stands as the final installment of the School Drugs , four-part full-length venture Funeral Arrangements. “I called a local funeral home to ask if the term ‘disposition’ was commonly used in the industry,” says School Drugs vocalist Josh Jurk. The director was a little surprised by the question. He said “yes” with some reservation. When I asked him why, he noted that it’s more of an insider term and derives its meaning from disposal, and the bereaved most likely wouldn’t be thrilled by the insinuation.” Opening the 7” record, “With Sympathy” admonishes the callousness of those involved

in an industry of death. Following close behind, “Feel Like Shit” is derived from a real- life conversation Josh had in therapy. The final track, “Funeral Arrangements,” reads

something like a hardcore ode to NOFX’s “The Decline”—an over 5-minute journey through various movements, tempos, and emotions.

One of pop punk most underrated bands, Huntington Beach the Crowd were blasting out saccharine pieces of four-chord glory back when Nofx and the Vandals were learning how to tune. Since the late 70s, they have helped to construct the SoCal scene, never showing signs of slowing down despite watching their contemporaries endure far more lucrative careers. Initially on Posh Boy records, then on Flipside records, this is their third album on Flipside recently reissued on Gummopunx records. With even a cursory listen to this re-release of Letter Bomb, we find the band at their strongest. Simplistic and straightforward, the songs here are still strongly influenced by the brashness and street sensibility of the late 70s British punk rock that initially influenced them.

Penelope Spheeris’ ground-breaking documentary The Decline Of Western Civilization captured the agony and the ecstasy of the Los Angeles punk scene of the late 1970s and its excellent soundtrack is required listening for all west coast Punk fans. The raw, jagged live sets by icons such as Black Flag, the Circle Jerks, the Germs, and Fear must be heard to be believed and the numbers by X point to their later commercial breakthrough; Catholic Discipline, with Claude Bessy of Slash magazine, provide another nugget. In the history of punk, the Sex Pistols reign supreme; the anarchic quartet changed the history of popular culture forever with their caustic rupture of rock, a mixture of shock and awe that gave two fingers to the establishment, kick-starting a musical revolution. Released a few months before their Never Mind The Bollocks debut, Spunk is a revelation, raw demos cut in late 76 and early 77 by producer Dave Goodman, with Glen Matlock’s bass far more melodic than what Sid Vicious cut on Bollocks; this edition has bonus demos of ‘Anarchy’ and ‘Pretty Vacant’ cut at Denmark Street, as well as an unedited ‘No Fun.’ Absolutely crucial!

Dee Dee Ramone I.C.L.C. (Inter-Celestial Light Commune) was formed by Dee Dee and John Carco in 1994 in New York City. After several live shows and drummers as a the three piece line up the two members decided to move to Amsterdam to record for Rough Trade Records. The four-song EP Chinese Bitch and the album I Hate Freaks Like You were both released in 1994. The band toured 22 countries in a 10-month period and they never toured in the U.S. This set in Scotland catch the big energy, some of The Ramones tracks are slower or even longer than the original versions and Dee Dee plays a wonderful version of Poison Heart all alone.

First-ever vinyl reissue for the ‘oldies-core’ torchbearers Beatnik Termites’ debut album, originally out in Spain in 1995, on the Rock and Roll Inc. label. Sugary, doo wop-influenced harmonies coupled with aggressive Ramones-styled buzzsaw guitars and surf punk drumbeats.

Originally released in November 1982, ‘Sound of Music’ was the second album from ‘Clockwork punks’ the Adicts. Preceded by the release of the three track “Chinese Takeaway” EP, which also featured “Too Young” and “You’ll Never Walk Alone” - both included here as bonus tracks along with their subsequent hits ‘Bad Boy’ and ‘Tokyo’ and an unreleased version of Ramones’ classic ‘I wanna be sedated’ - the album was widely praised in the music press of the day with ‘Sounds’ saying “thank Christ for The Adicts. In this often grey and depressing world they entertain us, uplift us and unify us”. Thirteen slices of punk/Oi! fun that made history, in a luxurious one-time Gatefold edition with poster, including liner notes by Mark Brennan and a total of 5 bonus tracks!

The Ruins' eponymous EP (also known as the “gray record”) was originally released in the late spring of 1984 and in fact represents a significant moment in the Italian independent music scene of the early 1980s. The then contemporary burgeoning wave of entertainment music contaminated by experimental accents and conveyed essentially by electronic instruments saw the Ruins at the forefront. The band, essentially a duo, formed in Mestre (Venice) in 1978, had already carved out a window of national attention within the Italian new wave in 1981 with their first single “Short wave” and their participation in one of the very first (if not the very first) Italian new wave compilations entitled “Samples Only.” Following this, between 1982 and 1983, there had been an important interlude in the evolution of the Ruins sound with the foundation of the quintet project (of which SPITTLE/DepenDance recently published an essential anthology titled “brain Flakes”). At the end of 1983, having concluded the group experience with the consequent and inevitable return to the original duo dimension the musical style further evolved putting even more emphasis on the unique blend of electronic sounds and almost black /soul influences of the new compositions that would later be collected in 1984 in the original version of E.P. The duo's sound at that particular time was characterized by the innovative use of synthesizers and drum machines for unconventional song structures, which at the same time also encapsulated Ciranna and Pizzin's experimental ethos, thus allowing them to follow a parallel trajectory capable of maintaining a certain distance - while remaining somewhat related to - from the contemporary mainstream pop and the so-called Italo disco strand. Ultimately, this 1984 EP by the Ruins - of which Spittle DepenDance now offers a valuable reissue enriched with additional material from the period that has remained completely unreleased until now - is a testament to the band's innovative spirit and its role in shaping the Italian new wave scene, landing moreover to international acclaim and acclaim even over the following decades. With its mix of electronic experimentation and dark pop sensibility, it remains essential listening for fans of avant-garde pop music.

Siouxsie And The Banshees Live at De Nieuwe Kade,Tiel,The Netherlands 1981. Great Concert from the JuJu Era. The European tour began on June 14th 1981 in Brussels, and ran to the end of the summer before the group flew to North America for dates throughout October and November. This Dutch concert features live versions of tracks that appear on ‘Ju Ju’, only missing ‘Into The Light’ and ‘Monitor. A superb recording.
