Step Forward. Umeå Hardcore Originals. In 1989 there were no such things as Umeå Hardcore. There was no scene and hardly any punk bands. A bunch of friends got together under the moniker of Step Forward to play fast and wild Hardcore. This is the first proper Straight Edge band of Sweden - started a couple of years after some members of legendary Svart Parad brought it to Scandinavia. In their short lifespan between 89-91 they recorded two demos, put on numerous shows and did a fanzine called Umeå Hardcore Zine. For the first time ever the 2 demos are being released on vinyl. Remastered and with liner notes from Dennis Lyxzen and a bunch of unseen photos. The band was only around for a fraction of time but they had a huge impact on the small world surrounding them and Dennis of course went on to form Refused right after the break up. Members of Step Forward were also involved in bands like Final Exit, International Noise Conspiracy, E.T.A., Regulations, AC4 or Invsn in the next three decades! If you are into fast Hardcore done by a bunch of alienated teens from the north of Sweden you need to check out this record.

When Mark E Smith died in January 2018, an era ended with him. The Fall were an English post-punk band, formed in 1976 in Prestwich, Greater Manchester. They underwent many line up changes, with vocalist and founder Smith as the only constant member. First associated with the late 1970s punk movement, the Fall's music underwent numerous stylistic changes, often concurrently with changes in the group's lineup. Nonetheless, their music has generally been characterised by an abrasive, repetitive guitar-driven sound, tense bass and drum rhythms, and Smith's caustic lyrics, described by critic Simon Reynolds as "a kind of Northern English magic realism that mixed industrial grime with the unearthly and uncanny, voiced through a unique, one-note delivery somewhere between amphetamine-spiked rant and alcohol-addled yarn." Swedish punk began in the late ‘70s and by the mid-‘80s, the small steel mill town of Fagersta had seven bands, immortalised on rare compilation The Vikings Are Coming, which is surprisingly diverse: Bizarr’s old-school punk is influenced by the Clash and SLF; Cruel Maniacs give social criticism and Crude SS’s hardcoredraws on Discharge; Rescues In Future’s speedcore is super melodic, influenced by Husker Du; Fear of War’s thrash is anti-religious and there’s more thrash from Bedrovlerz (or ‘Miserablerz’), while Ugly Squaw proffer unique power-punk humour (also making an incognito faux-reggae appearance as Rasta Boys). This edition revives the ori- ginal Swedish version released on Uproar Records in l985, giving us the full monty of this must-have anthology.

The Savonian occult rock behemoth Jess and The Ancient Ones have emerged with a new album! Their brand of heavy guitar and organ-led swagger has progressed from the twin guitar metal blast of yesteryear to Jess and The Ancient Ones’ very own take on soulful late sixties garage psychedelia. Titled Vertigo, the new record is set for release on Svart Records on May 21st this year with a foreboding sound of lysergic doom.

What began on the previous record, ‘The Horse & Other Weird Tales’ is taken further and deeper, towards a conclusion on Vertigo. Songwriter and guitarist Thomas Corpse comments, “To me this album sounds like a dark horse – a brother to the previous album. There’s a strange ominous feeling that hovers upon the entire album, maybe it’s the feeling of nostalgia that’s arising from the lyrics.”

Wrapped in a crude tornado-adorned old school sleeve, the album’s eight tracks bubble in a boiling cauldron of vintage pop culture influence and occult-tinged paranoia. Ranging from the softly fiery opening track ‘Burning of The Velvet Fires’ to the almost heavy metal -ish nihilistic banger ‘Born To Kill’, Vertigo is a spiraling journey of heavy Finnish psych rock at its finest.

After their last EP "...was it six or five shots?" in summer 2019, RULES from Zagreb now put out 4 more brandnew songs on this split release! They stick with their dirty rocking HC/Punks-sound, though this time the songs are slightly more influenced by stoner and noise-rock. Recorded and mixed on a 4-track recorder by Goran Lautar of NEON LIES and MODERN DELUSION who also helped bands such as DEATH ROW GROUPIES, INDIKATOR B and CELETOIDS to sound amazing on their records.

ANTISOCIAL SKILLS from Prague released their first self-titled 7" in 2017. Their sound is more in the vein of 80ies influenced midtempo HC/Punk with somewhat rocking elements. They added 10 songs to this record whose lyrics reflect on the solitude and hopelessness in modern society.

Controversial glam act New York Dolls were the epitome of rock ‘n’ roll excess, prefacing the rough edges of punk. Formed in late 1971 and initially known as Actress, the earliest incarnation featured bassist Arthur Kane, guitarist Rick Rivets and the guitarist that would become Johnny Thunders, with drummer Billy Murcia and singer David Johansen; soon, Rivets was replaced by Egyptian-born Sylvain Sylvain. Decked out in androgynous clothing, including platform boots, lipstick and body stockings, The Dolls toured England in 1972, which was ruptured by Murcia’s tragic alcohol-and-drugs-related death, bringing Jerry Nolan into the group. Signing to Mercury, they issued a self-titled debut, followed by Too Much Too Soon, but disappointing sales saw Mercury drop them. Live At Radio Luxembourg was recorded in December 1973 and features hot live versions of songs from these two seminal studio albums; with plenty of banter delivered in cod-French accents between the tracks, the set reveals the group in their prime, their no-limits attitude taking the form of raucous guitar riffs, shouted vocals, crashing drums and driving bass, and in addition to classic Dolls like “Puss N Boots” and “Jet Boy,” there are some blues references too.

Folk Devils, the London group that took their name from a well-known academic text on social scapegoating, and who blazed a trail across the UK's independent music scene of the mid-80s with their unique brand of post-punk energy, have returned with their first new music in 35 years. Recorded at London's famous Konk Studios in North London and mixed and co- produced by Grammy Award-winning engineer Rik Simpson, the re-born Folk Devils drew inspiration from the release of their 2016 career retrospective "Beautiful Monsters" and the reactions at subsequent live shows around the UK with kindred spirits Membranes, Inca Babies and The Cravats. Founder members, guitarist Kris Jozajtis and bassist Mark Whiteley, reformed the group by recruiting members of a short-lived 1987 version of Folk Devils; guitarist Nick Clift and drummer John Hamilton. Together with singer Dave Hodgson they soon discovered they had created a well-oiled twin-guitar juggernaut that brimmed with the same restless, twisted blues that characterized the first and second iterations of the band from 1983-87 when they were fronted by the highly underrated and now sadly-departed singer/songwriter Ian Lowery. Hodgson, a fellow transplant from the North-East, had known Lowery in the early 80s prior to Folk Devils, when the two were in their respective post-punk bands Ski Patrol and Parting Shots.

Mid-seventies Boston and a new local music scene was being forged in defiant opposition to tired arena acts and disco. Jeff (Mono Man) Connolly and JJ Rassler powered DMZ, while John Felice led the Real Kids on stripped down rockers inspired by 60s garage bands. On the darker side, Tracks’ Lorry Doll growled and spit out the lyrics to “Gang War Rumble,” “I Don’t Need You” and “Love Is (Bondage and Leather).” Co-founded with fellow art student/guitarist Jeff Rey, Lorry and Tracks joined a handful of other bands at the infamous Rat igniting Boston’s new music scene; just as Television, the Ramones, Talking Heads and others were doing the same in New York. Some called it punk or new wave, but it really was the birth of an alternative form of original expression that not only influenced and inspired subsequent bands coming out of these two cities, but also impacted all music that was to follow. In 1976 Tracks recorded a live set at the Club in Cambridge and released “Brakes on You” as a single on Blue Door Records. Picked up by Bomp for international distribution, it garnered Tracks worldwide notoriety. By the end of 1978, bolstered by airplay for the single, Tracks were playing most of their gigs in New York at legendary punk venues like CBGB’s and Max’s Kansas City. Sharing the bill with renown acts like the Police and the Jam and every other ‘hot new act’ that was coming through the East Coast, Doll and Rey knew they would have to make the move to NYC sooner or later. East London record shop World of Echo debuts on the other side of the counter with a reissue of Two Wishes, the solitary 12" by Anglo-German collective, Mutabor!. Seemingly lost to time, Mutabor! were first brought to World of Echo's attention when drummer/singer, Gary Asquith, played at the shop's first birthday celebrations while promoting one of his other bands, Rema Rema. And so the story goes... Mutabor! emerged wraith-like from the monochromatic grit of Berlin's art punk underground late in 1981 when Asquith left London to set up temporary residence in the city following a chance meeting with Malaria's Bettina Koster backstage at a Birthday Party gig at the Lyceum earlier that year. Beguiled by the possibilities of collaboration, musical and otherwise, he was soon to make his own contributions to what was an already fecund scene. Partnering with Koster, and Gudrun Gut and Manon Duursma also of Malaria!, Mutabor! were publicly birthed via an impromptu performance at punk rock polestar the Risiko. Asquith found himself playing percussion in what would be a first, while the rest of the band ossified in front of him in typically idealistic post-punk democracy. Little documentation of the performance survives beyond that which exists in the memories of those playing - that itself shaky enough - though there was clearly sufficient encouragement for them to commit to a recording session. Later that winter, the four booked time at Music Lab, the studio operated by Harris Johns, for what would ultimately be their only studio visit. Two songs were laid to tape, and soon after a photoshoot was to take place at Koster's flat, resulting in a handful of images that, along with the music, comprise the sum total evidence of the band's existence. 1001 Nights and Treats both found their way to Peter Kent, a co-founder of 4AD who had recently left the label with the ambition of starting his own imprint. Entitled Two Wishes, the two track 12" was to be the first and only release on Loaded. It seems that Mutabor! were to represent a series of firsts and lasts, a trend that continues now as they open the World of Echo imprint. It's fitting to think of Mutabor! in these prescient terms given how they sounded. Berlin at that time shared a spiritual axis with New York, the conceptual & aesthetic discordance of no wave and a nascent off-beat dance culture underpinning much of the respective creative activity. There are shared signifiers, but even in that context, Two Wishes sounds oddly out of step, moving to its own unusual rhythm. 1001 Nights stutters along on a tribal beat that seems to run independent of skronking sax, spidery guitar lines and deadpan vocal incantations, the ghosts of two songs meeting in some kind of incompatible voodoo union. On the reverse, Treats slows down and dims the lights further, as Asquith sardonically recites desirous threats as an increasingly malevolent sax and guitar grinds behind him. No surprise the darkness within the music given the parent bands and the backdrop of a crepuscular early 80s Berlin, though there remains a complex compositional element to these songs that suggests a broader spectrum of emotion - desire, romance, and ultimately, infinite possibility. Recut and mastered, Two Wishes is now presented with the original front cover artwork alongside additional imagery, including a 16 page booklet, all culled from Asquith's own archive. A brief bolt of energy at a crucial juncture in music history, Mutabor!'s story is emblematic of the mutli-verse of post-punk and the creativity its ideology necessitated.

Searching for new languages beyond the bitter and nihilist dialect of punk, bands like Gaz Nevada, Litfiba, CCCP, Diaframma, Neon, and many others, began spreading their message all along the Italian peninsula during the early eighties and many of the members of these bands are now some of the best musicians/producers in the Italian independent music panorama (Giovanni Lindo Ferretti, Piero Pelù/Litfiba, Bisca, etc.). 16 tracks by 16 Italian underground bands from 1982-1984: bands who faded into oblivion before ever releasing anything of their own on vinyl. It should, however, be stated that if these sixteen bands had been found on an album, EP or single, they certainly would not have lowered the average quality of albums in that genre…not even in terms of sound quality, which has actually been improved upon here (considering that the original tapes had been lying around collecting dust for at least a quarter of a century) by careful restoration.
