Brummie punks Dead Wretched only managed to release 2 EP’s “NO Hope FOR Anyone” and “convicted/infiltrator”, but in those 2 releases were songs of such strength and catchiness that they still stand up today as some of the best songs to ever come out of the punk rock scene. They were originally called The Wretched, but on discovering that there was a band from Newcastle already with that name they decided on Dead Wretched. This rules. Absolute quality.

Formed in 1977 in South Shields the Angelic Upstarts self-released debut single released in 1978 was ‘The Murder Of Liddle Towers’. The song highlighted the death of Liddle Towers who died after having been beaten in police custody, a crime that was covered up and no officers ever brought to justice. The record became a rallying point against police brutality. The record, and it’s B side ‘Police Oppression’ became a classic punk single and is a passionate call for justice. Mensi: “Liddle Towers was our protest single. It was the story of a boxing coach who was arrested for being drunk and disorderly. He was examined by a doctor and was perfectly healthy. Then in the morning was discovered dead and had injuries which the police surgeon described as being similar to that of a person who had been in a serious 70 miles-an-hour head-on collision. His injuries were absolutely horrific. He was basically kicked to death. “We done a couple of shows and got the money together and we pressed 500 singles, and then Small Wonder/Rough Trade re-released it, and it got to number one in the indie charts despite no radio play. Apart from John Peel, nobody else played it, and it was actually banned off any sort of play list in the northeast. Fair play I say.” The single is reissued as a limited edition of 500 on White vinyl, closely reproducing the first pressing from 1978.

Improved Sequence brings back to life an essential weirdo hc-punk ripper from Berkeley legends Fang. This is where it all started in 1981 when Fang guitarist Tom Flynn and bass player Brian Beattie released this incredible 7" documenting the 'experimental' in yr face sound they soon refined on 'Landshark'. Remastered by Brian Pyle and featuring the original artwork this is as good as it gets and we dare say... a classic!

Belgian Waffles Records is happy to announce the new release Bw014. La Vie En Rose « Shitparade » 7’’. Four songs of pure punk nihilism with political lyrics drenched in social criticism. Recorded in 1978 and unreleased to this day. The band formed in Ghent, in the flamish north part of Belgium, from the ashes of Basta who released a single in 1977. They only lasted a few months and played a handful of concert before disbanding. Some members went on to form the well know synth wave outfit Nacht und Nebel.

The Fits were a punk rock band from Blackpool, Lancashire, England. Originally released on Rondelet Music, this EP entered the UK Indie Chart in December 1982 and peaked at number 44.

Death Sentence was certainly a band of its time as the looks of the boys suggest with their boots, studded jackets and spiky hair. The four songs on this Ep epitomize everything to love about that genre. It is fast and basic, it is sloppy, it is snottier than a six-year old on a rainy day, it is pissed, spontaneous and distorted.

Following hot on the heels of Ethbo's excursion to Russia, with Letov, Suchillin and Pillayev, Howard Williams' Ethbo swivels its telescope to Deptford, South London in 1978.

The band Alternative TV were, and remain, a radical creative force. Originally formed by Mark Perry (Mark P), and Alex Fergusson (later of Psychic TV) in the early days of punk, when Perry was editor of the pioneering punk fanzine, Sniffin' Glue.

Early rehearsals were held in Throbbing Gristle's Industrial Records studio, with Genesis P-Orridge on drums. After line-up changes, the 1978 release of Life After Life saw Dennis Burns on bass, Chris Bennett on drums, Kim Turner on guitar and Mark P. on vocals. The session was produced by prolific Trojan Records artist and producer Joe Sinclair, and released on the independent label Deptford Fun City Records.

The song presents a “conscious” lyric through an urban music form of its time. And here’s the result, more than 40 years on, the dub still rocks. Perry’s vocal, like no other from the punk era, talks of the afterlife, in a twisted nod to Nietzsche, he chants “Wake Me Up When We Are Dead”.

A Venn diagram of Mark P and Mark E Smith, leader of The Fall, would show some common ground. Both band leaders survived numerous member changes throughout the decades, had a baleful eye on the producers and consumers of their music, and expressed themselves through a poetic, existential form of lyric writing and musical experimentation. In the early days Smith cited Alternative TV in a list of favourite music - alongside Johnny Cash.

Remastered with love, pressed at RAND, with sleeve and label artwork re-jigged by Will Bankhead, there's no better way to skank yourself to Armageddon.

When The Steves' two extremely limited (maybe 100-200 of each?) EPs were released back in 1980 and '81 respectively, the squares around Harvard's newsroom were aghast at the audacity of this group. Having the stones to release such crudely-rhythmic, near mechanical and downright terse tunes in the day's often long winded prog rockin' ballad heavy radio reality that were too robotic to be “punk” and too unruly to be anything but was, to say the least, a bold move. Sure to cause an uproar in the halls, protests in the classroom and uninvited dancing in the streets! In the annals of New England's rock journalism, there is not a mountain of coverage on The Steves, certainly not as much as the Alan Parsons Project or Aerosmith, but the fact remains that they were a fully charged powder keg of raw energy and new musical direction that seemed to elude most of the world back then. Not to say they didn't get any light shone on them, they did get a fair amount of airplay on the college stations around Boston and even appeared on the cover of Boston Rock magazine. It is Iron Lung Records' distinct pleasure to offer the modern world a new chance to discover the ever vital and effervescent music of The Steves' initial EPs along with a third EP of songs never released on vinyl until now that were recorded at the time or shortly after the initial sessions. A true synth-punk/KBD treasure. Obscurity is for suckers. The Monochrome Set were something of the unsung heroes of the post-punk world; they fitted into absolutely no category whatsoever and their puckish take on spaghetti western soundtracks meets lounge jazz via the twisted lyrical imagery of vocalist Bid was as singular as it was unique. Comprising a couple of ex-Ants in Andy Warren and Lester Square, with singer / guitarist Bid and drummer JD Haney, their filmic, playful material found favour with many, including John Peel although they failed to match this with commercial success. The Jet Set Junta was originally released on Cherry Red in 1983 with its urgent, ringing guitars surrounding Bid’s lyrics telling of dodgy arms dealings and armoured limos as Lester Square’s Ennio Morriconetwang bends and reverbs as a counterpoint.

Article 58, named after the Soviet classification for counter-revolutionaries, were formed in Scotland by Gerri McLaughlin (vocals), Douglas MacIntyre (guitars) and Ewan MacLennan (bass), with Stephen Lironi (drums) on these recordings. The group existed for a short period of time, burning brightly before burning out. A single, ‘Event To Come’, was produced by Postcard Records’ Alan Horne and Malcolm Ross and released on Josef K manager Allan Campbell’s Rational label. Article 58 were the opening group on many bills in Scotland, including support slots circa 1981 with A Certain Ratio, Scars, Josef K, Delmontes, Bauhaus, Restricted Code, among others. Josef K invited Article 58 to support them on some dates in England to promote their only album, ’The Only Fun In Town’, after which Article 58 recorded tracks for an as-yet unreleased album. One track, ‘Reflection’, did surface on a cassette/ zine product (‘Irrational’) released by Rational Records. However the teenage tension and strain of all that accompanies being in a group proved too much and Article 58 split up at the end of 1981. ‘Event To Come’ was to be the only single released by Article 58. The B side, ‘Icon’, is a previously unreleased recording. Both tracks are presented in a brand new sleeve designed by The Creeping Bent Organisation for release on the Optic Nerve label.

Sorry State is excited to bring you a repress of one of the best hardcore records ever, Koro's 1983 7" EP. Originally released in a small, self-released pressing, over the decades this monster's reputation has continued to grow, and collectors now have to fork over well over a grand for an original pressing. This one is too good for the scum to keep to themselves, though, a hyper-compact explosion of energy that can hold its own next to any landmark early 80s hardcore punk record you want to compare it to. Sorry State's 2023 pressing aims to replicate the original look and feel of the original as closely as possible, with an offset-printed sleeve on legal size paper. It's as close as you can get to the original without missing a mortgage payment.

Pressed in an ultra limited number of 200 back in 1980. Ervin Berlin was the work of Ervin Shuemake (a late 20s acid rocker) and two young punks named Jeff and TOM THE Bomb. Ervin had cut his teeth playing guitar on the crazy Terry Brooks "strange" Translucent World LP back in 1973 and spent the remainder of the 70s in various acid, hard, and prog rock bands throughout Central Florida. He met the younger punk duo of Jeff and "The Bomb" at end of 79 beginning of 80 and decided to take a stab at the punk craze with his two new acquaintances. Soon the trio was at a country and western studio in Winter Haven recording the Ervin Berlin single between sessions for possible Bellamy Brothers tracks. The blending of Ervin's acid rock chops and Jeff and Tom's thuggish punk approach resulted in this KBD space punk stomper. Equal parts Blue Cheer, Debris, Sacramento's Ozzie, and late 70s Hawkind. The 7" was pressed, a few house parties were played, and all parties went separate ways. 42 years later we are kicking off Total Punk Archives with a reissue of this lost Orlando classic. 100% Total Punk!!

Recorded in November 1983, this 5 song EP was the debut release for Decry who back in the day were relentlessly gigging and touring, playing with the likes of Discharge, Black Flag, UK Subs, Circle Jerks, Detonators, MIA, Necros, Crucifix, GBH, Agression,... Released in early 1984, this 7" sees the departure of their original drummer and anticipates by only a few months their debut LP on Toxic Shock. Tuneful and aggressive California HC/Punk. A true HC milestone! Limited to 200 copies with a 12 pages booklet included.

Originally released in 1979 on their own Disposable Records, this record was the brainchild of John Irvine in the UK. The record was pressed in a tiny edition, was played on John Peel several times and vanished without a trace. An excellent example of the UK DIY scene of the time later popularized on the Messthetics compilation series. It ranks number 12 in the top 100 DIY singles list that ran in Ugly Things issue #78. We’ve repressed it in an edition of 400 on red, purple, double mint green and olive green vinyl.

The compilation that started it all ! In October a series of bands have been recorded at the Vortex Club for a proposed live album along the lines of the first ‘Live At the Roxy Wc2’ record. The record featured the Maniacs, Suspects, Wasps, Neo, Art Attacks, Bernie Torme and Mean Street who were all regular players at the Vortex and Roxy. Released in 1977 - right after the punk-rock breakdown - the compilation made way for a revolutionary statement supporting the newborn counterculture.

British rockabilly combo The Krewmen had several distinct phases during the 1980s; beginning in 1982 as a rockabilly trio, they moved in a blues direction for their first 45s and after temporarily disbanding, reformed as a psychobilly quartet for this sought-after debut LP. Songs like “Night Of The Living Dead,” “Wild Dogs Of Zorberon” and “Hell Train” have a delicious B-movie aesthetic and “Don’t Give A Toss” and “Guy Fawkes” are keen Brit takes on the form. A must-have for Cramps and Meteors fans, and all psychobilly devotees.

During their lifetime The Good Missionaries toured and gigged with other distinctive, unconventional bands such as The Fall, The Pop Group, Crass, Scritti Politti... No Atlanta punk record from the 1980s creates such a lather as the debut single by DDT (except maybe Neon Christ's single, but I digress). Self released in 1983, merely finding a copy would put you into serious debt. That is, until now. Audio was restored by Jason NeSmith at Chase Park from a spotless copy of the record given to Chunklet by Joe Perry who recorded the single at his Bombay Studios in Smyrna. Mirroring the original double-sided “Travelin’ Band”/“Who’ll Stop the Rain” 45, which dropped in January 1970, this release showcases what were the band’s newest songs in a live setting. Side A features the Royal Albert Hall performance of the song from April 14, 1970, and marks the very first release of this rare recording. Side B, meanwhile, offers a live version of “Who’ll Stop the Rain,” recorded at the Oakland Coliseum, and previously released on the platinum-selling live album, The Concert.

Southern Los Angeles experimental punk band Mood of Defiance was formed in Hermosa Beach in 1981, spinning off from a short-lived synthesizer project called Kindled Imagination, formed in nearby San Pedro (home to The Minutemen) with drummer Richie Wilder of Saccharine Trust. Teenaged lead singer and band originator Rachel Morgan, who was known as “Screaming Bitch Rachel” and later, Hatha Watha, formed MOD with Wilder, recruiting initial guitarist TA Black and bassist Kevin Ball from a music press advertisement. Debut demo recordings (eventually issued as In A Box) featured this line-up but after Black and Ball quit the band, they were replaced by Danny Dean Philips and Gary Kail from the band Anti, moonlighting in this side project for debut album Now, released on Philips’ and Kail’s aptly-titled New Underground label in 1982; other band members featured on the disc include drummer Thaddeus. Opener “Divided States Of America” set the disc’s defiant punk tone, though “Sticky Lips” and “Girl In A Painting” are less caustic, with broader musical dexterity and post-punk rhythmic references. An important piece of southern Calfornia punk history back on vinyl after 38 years.

Totally mindblowing CONFUSE/KURO/G.I.S.M.- styled madness, originally issued in 1985 on the legendary Dogma label from Japan. One of Metallica's Kirk Hammet personal faves. In the words of Septic Death's singer Pushead, as published back then in MRR: "Raging speedcore thrusts out pile-driving chaotic leads and maniac raspy vocals, whose style is unique and adds character to the Gastunk sound. From the first track Rudimentary Peni pull you in and aurally assault your ears. It's abrasive, sharp with supreme musicianship. They created a perfect, demented universe of twisted, poetic and needle in the red punk that has never been bettered. This reissue comes with a fold out replica sleeve with the iconic Blinko foetus artwork and booklet.

Before they were called Bold, this K-Town mosh crew were originally known as Crippled Youth. Join The Fight was their debut EP as well as the first release for up-and-coming West Coast hardcore label New Beginning Records (underdog, Halfoff, P.H.C.), recorded in late 1985 and released in 1986. With song topics covering the positivity of their scene, being straight edge, and friends sticking together, this record was the catalyst for a thousand sing-alongs.

One of the best kept secrets of 80's California Hardcore Punk, TARGET OF DEMAND hailed from Long Beach and only released this 10-track smasher on the small Happy Hermit label and a couple compilation tracks before disbanding. Due to their very short existence as a band, and the fact that they were much more influenced by Teen Idles or SS Decontrol and the sounds coming out of Boston and the Midwest, rather than what was going on in California at the time, this incredibly ripping U.S. hardcore mayhem hasn’t been reissued until today.

It is impossible to overstate the significance of The Crowd to the nascent L.A. hardcore scene. Whilst bands like early Agent Orange and Social Distortion were playing to handfuls of fans in northern Orange County, in 1979 the Crowd were already filling backyards on their home turf in Huntington Beach, California. Ironically, it was further afield in the San Gabriel Valley that I first saw them perform, opening for the still punk Go-Gos in a small club. Without the continuing success of The Crowd in 1979 and throughout the summer of 1980, I would have packed my bags for London. Instead, the L.A. hardcore scene lifted off!

The Varukers were one of the first groups of the UK 82 movement - the second generation of punk rock that took the spirit of ’77 and merged it with the incessant beat of Nwobhm – responsible for creating UK hardcore. Heavily inspired by Discharge, The Varukers released three 7”s in the early ‘80s before this, their first and most definitive album, came out in 1983 on the legendary Riot City Records (Vice Squad, Abrasive Wheels, Chaos U.K.). Back in print on LP, thanks to Audioplatter, Bloodsuckers is one of the definitive pieces of early UK hardcore, full of Sabbath inspired guitar work, pounding rhythms and aggressive anarchistic lyrical content. Essential!

Belgian punk innovators Raxola formed in 1977, the name denoting Revolution Axis Opens Lights Ahead, one of only three Belgian punk acts to record an album in the early days. Guitarist/vocalist Yves Kengen, alias Yke, launched the trio with bassist Louis Hubeau and drummer Guy Van Snick, overlapping with the time that Kengen played bass in Bastard with Brian James, who returned to the UK to join London SS and ultimately, The Damned. Raxola’s self-titled debut is a furious, melodic, and intelligent blast of first-waveEuro-punk, a long sought-after classic whose originals go for silly money, now fully ripe for rediscovery.

Lesser-known punk band Cyanide formed in the northern cathedral city of York in 1976, the four lads based at the Old Priory Youth Club. After cutting a couple of demos soon after their formation, in time the band’s reputation was such that they were playing the Roxy in London and during their rapid ascent, the quartet managed to score a contract with major label Pye for their self-titled debut album, recorded in December 1976 and produced by Ron O’Shea, who ironically got his start with orchestral easy listening. A fun set of tongue-in-cheek first-wave punk originals, the album also includes a spirited cover version of The Who’s ‘I’m A Boy.’
