Straight out of Los Angeles, powerviolence band Zulu are here to share their life experiences and make a comfortable environment for everyone they come in contact with. The latest signing to Flatspot Records, the label will be releasing, for the first time on vinyl, the band’s debut EP Our Day Will Come (2019) and its follow-up My People...Hold On (2020) this summer. Formed by vocalist Anaiah Lei (also of hardcore band Dare) in 2019, Zulu is rounded out by Dez Yusuf (guitar), Braxton Marcellous (guitar), Satchel Brown (bass), and Christine Cadette (drums). Citing influences from Jill Scott to Weekend Nachos, the band’s style is fiercely original, laced with heavy breakdowns intertwined with samples of pivotal moments in black culture. The band has already seen praise from Stereogum, No Echo, and New Noise Magazine, and have a tour on the way with fellow California innovators Scowl this summer. Zulu carries a strong message, but it’s also about having fun, as Anaiah puts it - “Zulu isn’t a political band at all. I started Zulu because I wanted to be in an all black band and talk about what we go through and been going through. But also celebrating our lives at the same time.”

Known for their blend of hardcore and powerviolence, Zulu is pushing the boundaries of those sounds into new territory on their forthcoming album, A New Tomorrow. Formed as a solo project by vocalist Anaiah Lei in 2018 and then joined by guitarist Braxton Marcellous, the Los Angeles based band has since been rounded out by guitarist Dez Yusuf, bassist Satchel Brown and drummer Christine Cadette. A New Tomorrow (Flatspot Records) serves as the band’s first full-length, following EPs Our Day Will Come (2019) and My People… Hold On (2020). Taking on the task of self-producing the record, the band immersed themselves in collaborator Zach Tuch’s (dare, Trash Talk) studio in the valley. After spending months toying with different instrumentation and samples, and pulling influences ranging from reggae to death metal, the result is an eclectic 15 tracks.

Brontez Purnell is an award-winning writer, choreographer, filmmaker and musician. His long-running punk band, THE Younger Lovers, have released four LPs since 2009. Brontez has described The Younger Lovers as “fucking Motown but on my terms” which speaks to the longing, breathlessness, and catchiness of his songs. In 2006, after an evening of reckless acrobatics with his previous band, Gravy Train!, Brontez met up with friends in San Pedro to record a few of his heartache tracks. He stayed up all night teaching the songs to KID Kevin (of Four Letter Words, Lipstick Pickups) and as the sun rose they cut these four frantic tracks. Limited to 300 black copies. A few weeks ago, the first planetary defense test was successfully carried out: the Dart probe diverted the orbit of the asteroid Dimorphos. With this Nasa operation we know, once again, that when we humans play god we are unstoppable, that we are not going to become extinct like the dinosaurs as long as progress makes us move. However, while this space shock was brewing 11 million kilometers away, here, more specifically in Torelló (Barcelona), a disc was being created that is like the Trojan horse of asteroids. Sin has made a crater or is going to do so; we are talking about Meant to collide of Wud. The second album of the band arrives three years after the debut Okeanos (2019), three are also the nuclear components that currently form it (and not the five before) and, again, three are the letters with which the name of the band remains (wud), previously they were called Wood. It seems that many things have changed in three years and that's right, the group has grown while it has been reduced and this new album testifies to that. The eight songs concisely concentrate the soul of the project. Although what they continue to love is the structured edginess of math-rock, they want the work to have punk-rock and pop constantly on the horizon, which makes the computation more digestible for all kinds of ears that like sharp-guitars music. Behind the songs we find Marc Fernández, Aleix 'Jimmy' Vilarrasa and Rai Costa, three friends of Torelló who for the last, almost, two years have been carrying out the recording. A long and arduous process that has gone through different studios, such as Fontderola by Jordi Casadesús and Jordi Torrents, or Lluerna by Èric Fuentes, but above all it has been hatched in their rehearsal room where they themselves have persevered in the attack to record a good part of the instrumental. The trio's bizarre ideas have been grounded with millimeter precision, faithfully capturing the centennial hyperactivism that accompanies them wherever they go. On the one hand, the songs trot lively and directed with a hardcore soul and rounded pop, on the other, if we look a little, we notice how the details of each cut are infinite, that the structures could be applied to the Sagrada Familia, that, in definitely, there is a lot of hard work. That the process has been laborious is also noticeable in the guitarist's lyrics, words spat out with the impatience of someone who doesn't want to waste another minute in the loop of self-destructive thought. Meant to collide is a fight between the two opposite and complementary parts of oneself, and I say two to simplify. Between the adrenaline side that wants to end everything through romantic escape and the other, the one that wants to reconstruct the fragments of memory to heal from serenity. From this very personal dispute comes a more than possible collision which, deep down, is what makes the group's creative drive advance and, above all, what makes the feeling that the songs are alive because they are lived intensely. Are we talking about emotions? Yes, thank God, because there such of this on the album, all the time, even in the instrumental interludes. The dreamy piano of “Barnum’s Circus”, the spectral autotune of “Lost Stars” or the Queens-of-Stoneagian guitar solo of “Cul-de-Sac” are at the service of the emotional magma of the musicians. The influence of highly emotional groups such as Delta Sleep (the English band performed one of the most memorable concerts for the wud crew at Torelló’s Arundo Fest in 2018), Algernon Cadwallader or Faraquet is noticeable. Over the years we are discovering where exacerbated technological progress is leading us: that's right, to collapse. Meanwhile, but, this band warns us that they have already arrived there and that humanity can be taken in abundance from there, in fact, there is nothing more human than collapsing.

The album follows Cat In The Hat (no relation), an undocumented refugee who is framed for a crime and requires the assistance of a ragtag gang of miscreants, academics, orchestra-caliber musicians, and radical insurgents—sometimes art does in fact imitate life!

The album’s release comes in tandem with the release of accompanying book One Smashed Window For Every Divided Soul, an illustrated combination tour journal and narrative exploration of Cat and his travails. The book acts as a companion piece to the album’s story, sifting through archival documents and fabulist accounts of the band’s East Coast tour of 2017.

We were very honored to be able to release the European version of this record in 2003 and the enthusiasm is still real to be able to offer you this reissue 20 years later. The disillusioned rage and urgency of this album remain intact after two decades.

A grandiosely updated “Swimming” sustains the urgent sense of drive unconventionally, before “Anyone”, one of the most gripping and sweeping mid-tempo ballads of recent years, changes down a gear. And that was just the beginning. Every time you think you’ve grasped the band musically, they immediately prove you wrong with the next track, e.g. with “Dead To Us”, the calmest and most introspective track according to its loss subject, which stands out for a beautiful ending that develops without haste. Winged Wheel is made up of four musicians whose worlds have intersected for years without them ever all being in the same room. Cory Plump (Spray Paint, Expensive Shit), Whitney Johnson (Matchess, Damiana), Fred Thomas (Tyvek, Idle Ray), and Matthew Rolin (Powers/Rolin Duo, solo) have been longtime participants in various d.i.y. communities, crossing each others’ paths through shared gigs, working on releases, or taking the stage at Cory's small upstate NY bar. Each player has developed their own personal practice of improvisation and home-recording, and Winged Wheel began by chance when Cory asked Fred to send over some rawly-recorded drum loops to jam over. Cory tracked rangy guitar and bass parts over these repetitive loops and songs slowly started taking shape. Matthew's guitar layers took these foundations to a whole new level, and Whitney's submerged vocal tracks solidified everything, elevating the project from a soup of partially formed ideas into something intelligible. The entire album was written, recorded, and mixed in remote collaboration, eventually turning into a balancing act of precisely arranging sonic details and maintaining the formless excitement the music began as. This paradoxical process can be heard in the final form of the album, a continuous zone that manages to be strange and amorphous while still carving out space for four distinctive musical personalities. It’s a sound that hovers and stumbles as often as it takes declarative turns in unexpected directions, the circles getting smaller the closer you zoom in.

Obscure but at the same time bright years, they inevitably generated an exuberant powerful musical movement that from Bologna then spread throughout Italy, and we were definitely part of it. ‘Quando I Baci Erano Fiocchi' is a collection of songs written and recorded in that period, in the cellar of Via s. Vitale 13 with a 4-track cassette deck. Never released before, they see the light today after being edited, remixed and digitally remastered. The missing link between post-punk and new wave, Windopen could seriously show the dark side of a ‘political’ nation.

Madrid-based 90’s punk rock nostalgics “weak” is back to the fray with their second album “A Guide for Adult Despair”. You can tell they grew up with Nofx, Lagwagon and No Use for A Name tapes blaring on their Walkmans as their sound could be defined as a passionate homage to the Californian punk rock bands of the nineties. On this new album the band decides to go one step further in terms of composition and recording quality and hits Ultramarinos Costabrava Studio with the mighty Santi García in charge. The result is a much more elaborate and consistent album, combining the speed and rage of punk rock with slower and super melodic pop style cuts. Although it is not a concept album, everything is wrapped in an atmosphere of sadness and despair in which many of us have been trapped in these past years. A Guide for Adult Despair is a deeply personal album, which revolves around the ups and downs that each member of the band has experienced during these last turbulent years. Nevertheless, the album also leaves room for some fast and direct songs loaded with social and political criticism. Recorded between the past months of December/January at Ultramarinos Costabrava by Santi García, this album is definitely much more consistent and emotionally engaging than the previous one.

Initially a crowd-funded venture that raised over $60,000 worth of support, the record’s release was met with critical success and an instantly sold out modest initial pressing of 600 units. Now for the first time since it’s release the record is available again from the ska-punk focused Bad Time Records (who released the band’s 2021 album “Ordinary Life”), ready to meet the since dramatically expanded ska fan base. The record focuses on mental health in a way that hadn’t been addressed especially by a ska band. Singer Reade Wolcott addressed it in an article for Spin: “At that point, my focus was very pro-normalizing talking about mental health,” Wolcott says of 2018’s Self Care, the band’s first post-hiatus record. Water Machine is an office romance between Hando Morice (they/them), Flore de Hoog (she/her), Jimmy Gage (he/him) and Goda Ilgauskaitė (she/her). An unassuming supergroup formed out of Glasgow institutions including Goth GF, Passion Pusher, Brenda and Soursob, their sound careens between punk, country and alt-rock underpinned by the unique quality they call “Raw Liquid Power”.

Following last year’s self-titled demo tape on Gold Mold Records, and fresh off of shows with the likes of Holiday Ghosts, The Cool Greenhouse and The Orielles, as well as a rollicking Viagra Boys afterparty, the four-piece will release their highly-anticipated first studio effort ‘Raw Liquid Power’ on Upset The Rhythm on August 4th.

The EP opens with a menacing, modulating synth melody. Gage’s guitar enters with a mighty bend before breaking into the chugging rhythm of ‘Water Machine Pt. 2’. This timely reminder to refill your water bottle - “don’t be late, hydrate!” less a wellness mantra than a threat - builds to a spacey outro with flashes of the art-punk weirdness of Suburban Lawns. ‘Stilettos’ marches on indignantly with a spiky riff punctuated by Ilgauskaitė’s cowbells. Staccato talk-singing tells a playful tale of stray cats following you home, but belies a darker subtext as the breakdown gives way to paranoid duelling guitars evoking The Fire Engines.

The anti-anthem ‘At the Drive In’ skewers joyless DIY crowds, reminiscent of much-missed Glasgow punks Breakfast Muff. Water Machine’s irrepressible sincerity can’t help but shine through in the final moments though, as jibes about “late night trade potential” give way to plaintive vocal harmonies. Morice tears public transport a new one on closer ‘Bussy’, a First Bus diss track bemoaning precarious employment amidst crumbling infrastructure. “That’s why I’m not on time!” they roar over de Hoog’s frantic, pounding bass, bringing the record to a skidding, screeching halt.

Canadian powerhouse Warkrusher are back after their insanely great self titled Demo Tape, Pils Sessions #11 Tape and the Epitaph 7". Agipunk will release their debut LP in Europe (American press by Desolate Records) right on time for their European tour. Now, a few words about the music: I honestly think this is the perfect combination between old school stench core a la Axegrinder, Deviated Instinct, early Hellshock and early nineties Bolt Thrower. I've been shocked by the thick granitic power of this new recordings and felt my eardrums under a relentless siege that I had to listen to this damn good record over and over again for the next days. Not to talk about the artwork: simply insane with all those little details and stuff.
