Launched in London in December 1976, punk stalwarts 999 are one of the most successful and long-lasting acts of the upstart movement. Third studio album The Biggest Prize In Sport was their first for Polydor, the band’s competency at a peak, despite the temporary appearance of fanboy drummer Ed Case, drafted in from the Southall Crew supporters when Pablo LaBrittain broke his arm. Often ranked as the greatest album of their entire career, The Biggest Prize In Sport had noticeably smoother edges than their earlier work, yet still holding plenty of bite, the combination pushing it into the Billboard top 200 in the USA. Agnostic Front’s debut LP, Victim In Pain, went out of print again for a while, so Bridge Nine did a quick pressing to keep it available! This pressing features the original cover art printed as a low-contrast halftone on an almost-black matte cover. Agnostic Front and Victim In Pain are embossed and spot-UV printed so the band’s logo and album title pop off the jacket.

Following hot on the heels of Ethbo's excursion to Russia, with Letov, Suchillin and Pillayev, Howard Williams' Ethbo swivels its telescope to Deptford, South London in 1978.

The band Alternative TV were, and remain, a radical creative force. Originally formed by Mark Perry (Mark P), and Alex Fergusson (later of Psychic TV) in the early days of punk, when Perry was editor of the pioneering punk fanzine, Sniffin' Glue.

Early rehearsals were held in Throbbing Gristle's Industrial Records studio, with Genesis P-Orridge on drums. After line-up changes, the 1978 release of Life After Life saw Dennis Burns on bass, Chris Bennett on drums, Kim Turner on guitar and Mark P. on vocals. The session was produced by prolific Trojan Records artist and producer Joe Sinclair, and released on the independent label Deptford Fun City Records.

The song presents a “conscious” lyric through an urban music form of its time. And here’s the result, more than 40 years on, the dub still rocks. Perry’s vocal, like no other from the punk era, talks of the afterlife, in a twisted nod to Nietzsche, he chants “Wake Me Up When We Are Dead”.

A Venn diagram of Mark P and Mark E Smith, leader of The Fall, would show some common ground. Both band leaders survived numerous member changes throughout the decades, had a baleful eye on the producers and consumers of their music, and expressed themselves through a poetic, existential form of lyric writing and musical experimentation. In the early days Smith cited Alternative TV in a list of favourite music - alongside Johnny Cash.

Possibly one of the weirdest experiment in the post-punk realm, Vibing Up the Senile Man (Part One) is the second studio album by English anti-heroes Alternative TV, released in March 1979 on small indie label Deptford Fun City. Forget about the influential 1978 debut - The Image Has Cracked – frontman Mark Perry is literally leaving the planet in this effort. ‘There are free jazz influences; I'd got into the Art Ensemble of Chicago, Sun Ra ..) I'd moved into this house with an amazing music room – pianos, clarinets, you name it – and we'd always be picking up stuff from junk shops.’ The description set the pace for a unique performance, not only the afro-american heritage , traces of the Canterbury school are almost evident as the early experiment of the BBC Radiophonic workshop. Is it safe to consider Vibing up The Senile Man on the same time-line as Robert Wyatt ‘The End Of An Ear’ and Throbbing Gristle ’20 Jazz Funk Greats’ (Genesis P-Orridge is on board on two tracks, playing assorted percussion) ? "Monolith" is the second studio album by the British crust punk band Amebix, originally released in 1987 and now made available again by Back On Black on limited edition blood red vinyl!

Formed as "The Band With No Name", Amebix's original run was from 1978 to 1987, during which time they released three EPs and two full-length LPs. "Monolith", the band's second studio album, was originally released in 1987. Shortly after its release, Amebix disbanded, and "Monolith" would be their final studio album until they reunited in 2008. By being one of the first bands to blend anarcho-punk and heavy metal music, Amebix are often cited as one of the key bands that helped to create the crust punk genre. Such notable bands as Sepultura, Neurosis and Deviated Instinct have paid homage to the band.

Formed in 1977 in South Shields the Angelic Upstarts self-released debut single released in 1978 was ‘The Murder Of Liddle Towers’. The song highlighted the death of Liddle Towers who died after having been beaten in police custody, a crime that was covered up and no officers ever brought to justice. The record became a rallying point against police brutality. The record, and it’s B side ‘Police Oppression’ became a classic punk single and is a passionate call for justice. Mensi: “Liddle Towers was our protest single. It was the story of a boxing coach who was arrested for being drunk and disorderly. He was examined by a doctor and was perfectly healthy. Then in the morning was discovered dead and had injuries which the police surgeon described as being similar to that of a person who had been in a serious 70 miles-an-hour head-on collision. His injuries were absolutely horrific. He was basically kicked to death. “We done a couple of shows and got the money together and we pressed 500 singles, and then Small Wonder/Rough Trade re-released it, and it got to number one in the indie charts despite no radio play. Apart from John Peel, nobody else played it, and it was actually banned off any sort of play list in the northeast. Fair play I say.” The single is reissued as a limited edition of 500 on White vinyl, closely reproducing the first pressing from 1978.

A limited repress of debut 6-Track EP by Swedish legends Avskum. Original released in 1984, "Crucified By The System" is a growling, lo-fi intense dose of rampaging Swedish hardcore with hoarse vocals, pounding drums and rushing guitars. Hailing from Britain’s formerly industrial heartland of North Yorkshire, The Burial was a forward-facing ska-punk/Oi band with a strong Left orientation, channelling 2Tone, Northern Soul, punk, and folk influences. Rhythm guitarist Eric ‘Barney’ Barnes made sure the world knew these skinheads were antifascist and the use of a full horn section made their sole LP, A Day On The Town, stand out. Unlike the Redskins, who soon moved to the student circuit, The Burial remained embedded in the working class communities from whence they came; this fine, often overlooked LP will be devoured by all fans of ska-punk and Oi!.

Reissue, originally released in 1986. Cólera, formed in the early 1980s by Pierre and his brother Redson, who is one of the key figures in South American punk. They played a vital role in the scene and garnered a dedicated following with their energetic and politically charged music. Pela Paz, which translates to "For Peace" in English, is often regarded as one of the most important and influential releases in Brazilian punk. Pela Paz stands as a testament to the DIY spirit of the Brazilian independent music scene. The record's success demonstrated that independent music could thrive outside of major record labels, inspiring countless bands and artists in South America.

Best Before 1984 is a compilation of Crass' singles and other tracks, released in 1986, including lyrics and a booklet ('...In Which Crass Voluntarily 'Blow Their Own'") which details the history of the band in their own words. The album was named in reference to the notion that 1984 was the band's 'sell by date', the year that they had often publicly stated that they would split up. Indeed, the band ceased gigging and recording in that year. For many years, there were plans to release an expanded edition of Best Before 1984, which will include currently unavailable material (such as the 'Merry Crassmas' and 'Whodunnit?' singles) and rarities, in the same vein as the 'Crassical Collection' re-releases of the band's albums. These plans finally came to fruition in 2019, with the announcement of an expanded two-disc version of the album."

"Stations of the Crass is the second album by Crass, released in 1979. The record, originally released as a double 12", includes live tracks from a gig recorded at the Pied Bull pub in Islington, London, on August 7, 1979. The first three sides contain the studio tracks and play at 45 rpm, while the final side comprises the live material and plays at 33 rpm. The album's title is not only a pun on the Catholic rite of the Stations of the Cross (such jibes against the religious establishment were typical of Crass), but is also a reference to the graffiti campaign that the band had been conducting around London's underground railway system, the cover artwork depicting a wall at Bond Street tube station that had allegedly been 'decorated' by them. Although the album met mixed critical reception at first, it managed to sell at least 20,000 copies within two weeks.”

The Feeding of the 5000 is the first album by the anarcho-punk band Crass. The album was recorded on 29 October 1978, by John Loder at Southern Studios and was released the same year. It was considered revolutionary in its time due to what was considered an extreme sound, frequently profane lyrical content and the anarchist political ideals in the lyrics. This album is considered one of the first punk albums to expound serious anarchist philosophies.

Mirroring the original double-sided “Travelin’ Band”/“Who’ll Stop the Rain” 45, which dropped in January 1970, this release showcases what were the band’s newest songs in a live setting. Side A features the Royal Albert Hall performance of the song from April 14, 1970, and marks the very first release of this rare recording. Side B, meanwhile, offers a live version of “Who’ll Stop the Rain,” recorded at the Oakland Coliseum, and previously released on the platinum-selling live album, The Concert.

The legend of Crime looms large among punk aficionados the world over. Formed in the mid-1970s, the band's dual-guitar sound, confrontational image and sleazed methodology still serve as inspiration decades later. With only a handful of singles released during their active lifespan, Crime's legacy grew significantly as archival recordings began to trickle out in the early 1990s. Of all these excavations, San Francisco's Doomed was one of the first and certainly one of the most powerful. Culled from 1978-79 studio demos and rehearsal tapes, San Francisco's Doomed captures the frenzy of Crime's sound in a fittingly loose, devil-may-care framework. Side one is a gloriously unpolished assault of classic, gutter-level punk with vicious live set staples like "Feel The Beat" and "Piss On Your Dog" taking marquee placement over the more well-known singles tracks. Side two finds Crime taking aim at the so-called New Wave, augmenting their attack with ripped odes that bear the direct influence of science fiction and rockabilly on the group. Few recordings from US punk's first wave match the raw intensity heard on San Francisco's Doomed. As Michael Stewart Foley writes in the liner notes, "Unimpressed with the once idealistic counter-culture and all the bands associated with it, Crime declared itself San Francisco's First And Only Rock 'N' Roll Band. Dressed in police uniforms and driving sonic ice picks through listeners' eardrums with the volume cranked past 10, they looked more like a street gang that might take your wallet and slash your face with a switchblade just to watch you bleed. But despite the band's best efforts to stand apart, Crime could have come from nowhere else, at no other time."

"The Only Sound"/ "New Musical Express", the debut punk single by Dansette Damage from Birmingham, originally released on the tiny Shoestring Records in early 1978. The Dead boys hailed from Cleveland, Ohio and relocated to New York to become one of the first US punk bands. Originally signed to Sire Records, the Dead Boys were notorious for their edgy attitude and songs. After frequent shows at CBGB, the club owner of CBGB became their manager. Bristol Punk Pioneers Disorder formed around 1980, during the second wave of UK punk rock. Their approach to DIY ethics was so deep that they decided not to sign to Riot City, but to create a label of their own, for a bunch of classic singles the average distortion level of which led BBC DJ John Peel to describe Disorder as sounding like "shit". In fact, unlike many contemporaries like Crass or Conflict, Disorder showed no ambitions in stylistic experimentation: their debut LP 'Under The Scalpel Blade' is one blast after the other of pure rage, packaged in two-minute bursts of hyper-speed drumming, distorted guitars, and screaming vocals. Frontman MJ Howells and his drumming brother Peter Purrfect formed glam-rock band Rockslide in Manchester in the mid-1970s with bassist Wispa Cundall and guitarist Vic Long but changed direction after seeing the Sex Pistols; Long was replaced by guitarist Gus Gangrene and after shifting to London, their new identity was pure punk. Debut EP Temptations Of A White Collar Worker sold 14,000 copies in short shrift, paving the way for the dynamite LP Further Temptations, the sole long-player they managed before splitting in the mid-1980s. Formed in early stages of the British punk explosion by four high school mates in Finchley, north London, Eater quickly established themselves as one of the youngest and rawest bands on the scene. Inspired by a line in the T Rex song, “Suneye,” Eater was influenced by the classier side of glam rock but was very much a rapid-fire power-punk concern with their own output. Signing to Dave Goodman’s fledgling punk imprint, The Label, Eater issued three singles before their greatly anticipated debut album, which has since been hailed as an all-time classic; pointing their fingers at upper-class twits and taking the piss out of themselves and their fans on “No Brains,” the album also features two Velvet Underground covers and an unusual David Bowie adaptation, all delivered in no-holds-barred triple time.
