¿Donde estan Ardillas? We hope somebody’s seen ‘em recently. Legend goes that these Puerto Rican rodents (formed ten years prior to Davilla 666 with whom they share members) like to take their time, hitting the studio to record their first album (2011’s self-titled LP on Cha Cho Records) a decade after their inception, and laying down this second, mucho overdue album somewhere on the far side of inbetween. That bygone session produced this tenderly rocking beauty Canciones de Amor, Locura y Muerte, and it’s been worth the wait! "¿Donde estan?" opens the set with a gang vocal driven mid-tempo twist sweeter than a tray of mantecaditos, and the swivel don’t surrender until the reprisal of “Linda Niña”—a loving but pumping island anthem first released as a Slovenly single long ago in sunnier times. If you’ve ever happened across Ardillas on stage, you know well (and you’ll never forget!) that whatever delicate care they’ve serenaded you with is a decoy vehicle for sweaty and swingin’ rock’n’roll licks from the Chuck Berry-cum-Flamin’ Groovies School o’ Truth. Fake3 – Florida Untitled is the third issue of the zine/compilation edited and published by experimental artist Cristiano Grim. It features an essay curated by photographer Stefano Lemon who explored the last punk communities based in South Florida at notorious venues such as La Rosas, Churchill’s Pub, Space Mountain and The Gramps in Miami, Respectable Street in West Palm Beach, Beer Punx in Fort Lauderdale, Lozer Lounge in Pompano Beach. Poignant black and white photography, transformed by the hands of the legendary American graphic artist Zach Hobbs. Hobbs created an iconoclastic collage where the eucharistic adoration is matched with the holy rituality of moshing. A timeless punk, without sex gender nor race, perched on a tower of beer protected by blood, sweat, chains and loud prayers raged against gentrification.

Running with the ball that 2020’s “Serve To Serve Again” punted forward, this album marks another energetic break towards the goal for Vintage Crop. ‘Kibitzer’ sees the band define their field of play, more melodic at times, still bruising, forever droll. These ten tracks of ‘snappy as elastic’ Australian punk are packed with tensile riffage, hefty beats and witty refrains of everyman curiosity.

‘Kibitzer’ was written in quick response to their critically lauded ‘Serve To Serve Again’ album. Harsh guitars, a brutish rhythm section and a knack for always having the right words at hand are still abundant, but this time Vintage Crop’s songs expand upon their forceful nature with greater harmonic arrangement. It was recorded by Jasper Jolley in one single session on a former apple orchard in Geelong, a backdrop that mirrors the band’s own organic growth whilst highlighting their willingness to approach capturing their own sound their own way. The album was then mixed and mastered by Mikey Young.

‘Kibitzer’ delves into themes of identity, resilience and acceptance; some of the more upbeat notions that the band have dealt with to date. ‘Casting Calls’ opens the record, slamming through the speakers with gusto and setting the tone for the following 30 minutes. “It’s rolling, we’re rolling, we’re winding back the tape, we’re getting better with each take” sings lead songwriter Jack Cherry. Accepting your limitations and taking pride in your work are key themes on ‘Kibitzer’. In fact ideas around learning, growing and being able to take things in your stride are strongly felt through their entire body of work. These themes hit home with the album’s title too, with Cherry feeling that ‘Kibitzer’ is an apt way to describe a lot of the band’s focus. “I feel like a lot of our lyrics over the years have been our unsolicited opinions on other people’s situations, the very definition of the word Kibitzer. So for this record we wanted to lean into that tendency by acknowledging it and even go as far as stamping it on the album cover.”

Musically the band have expanded their palette on this album; exploring a world of rhythmic harmony and a newfound vocal melodicism. There’s also greater lyrical elaboration and considered song structures at play. ‘The Duke’ is a mob of rollicking chants and heavy hitting, catchy to the core. ‘The Bloody War’ is a more sanguine reflection of tumbling drums, struck chords and shrill keyboard warble. “He’s got the keys to the universe and they’re hanging from his belt loop, his wit is as quick as lightning, his disapproving gaze is the thunder that follows” pipes Cherry on ‘Double Slants’, guitars chiming through the hubbub. ‘Hold The Line’ turns the wry amusement of dealing with cold callers into a fidgety anthem of knowing frustration. Whilst ‘Switched Off’ even welcomes the introduction of horns (courtesy of Heidi Peel) to the group’s repertoire, ushering in an unexpected serenity into their tough sound.

As one of the most sonically challenging and visually unique bands of their generation, Daufødt swept the floor of the underground with their debut “1000 Island” and won a Norwegian Grammy in the Rock category. They could easily become the Next BIG Name IN Rock, but – no thanks! got other things to do. Instead, the Daufødt-gang circled back to the underground, hooked up with Lasse Marhaug, associated Sunn0)))-member and recent producer of Jenny Hval and Thurston Moore.

On their upcoming sophmore album “Aromaterapi”, Marhaug has challenged the band on all levels and pumped them into Absolute Sonic MAYHEM-mode, giving associations to similar noise-rock-mongers as Napalm Death, Swans, The Body and Årabrot. Likewise, the scorning lyrics of the debut that made local billionaires spam singer Annika with self-righteous messages have been sharpened into something even more destructive and dangerous.

When we now can announce the first single from the album, one thing is for sure: Daufødt has big amps, but even bigger ambitions. “Knekken” (translated: “the crack, like in cracking you teeth..)

The dictionary describes to crack like this: “to break something so that it does not separate, but very thin lines appear on its surface”.Daufødt, on the other hand, shows us that the crack, Knekken, is the musical equivalent of being hit by a freight train full of decibels. The crack is about getting your snout crushed, regardless of the direction of the sky, and with an unknown sender.

Daufødt consists of bassist Eskild Myrvoll (Mall Girl, Kanaan, Blodkvalt), vocalist, visual artist and designer Annika Linn Verdal Homme, guitarist Eirik Albrethsen Reithaug and drummer Mads Antonsen Gerzić.

The band says: “This album is clearly something else than the first album. It’s harder, faster and more violent – and made to better fit the times we live in. The first album was written in 2019, while Aromatherapi was written in 2021, when the world looked quite different. The bold creative choices we have made with Lasse are made not to be naive, but to actually be honest with ourselves and the audience about how things really are.”

After debut album You, Me & the Violence sparked listeners’ imaginations, 2018 follow-up We Already Lost the World was an unyielding inferno of brazen ideas. Metal Hammer UK called it “intelligent, poignant art,” writing that “this downward spiral changes pace and weight at every turn.” It screamed for mutual respect in a world of increasingly extreme political divides, and used the vehicles of punk, post-hardcore and post-metal to carry its cries. Now comes Gris Klein. Gris Klein’s lyrics were sculpted by the Covid-19 pandemic, eloquently summarizing the cruel and sometimes nonsensical nature of mental illness. “Trompe l’oeil”, for example, sings, “Most of the times I feel lonely are when my friends are around.” “This is the exact moment where you should feel like you’re surrounded by people you love and you’re not alone,” the band add. “It asks, ‘If I can’t feel loved in this specific moment, then when can I feel that?’” Gris Klein is a portrait of a world enduring its most chaotic era in a generation. Yet throughout, the Birds in Row manifesto is the same as it’s always been: love each other. “We really want people to know that they’re not alone, and that they can count on each other,” they say. “The way we treat each other is political. It’s OK to trust each other. All the movies about catastrophes show people turning against each other, but that’s not what would happen. When people are in the shit, they help each other. That’s what we’re trying to transmit with this record: hold each other’s hands.” Not even a world-shaking pandemic could damage Birds in Row’s invention, compassion and brutality. It's true, and Saint Emma would be proud of these scrappy punks and this Left-Wing masterpiece. It may have taken a decade, but No Trigger is relentless, and the band is playing Riot Fest, Punk In Drublic Festival, and shows with The Lawrence Arms in support of these new songs. Empire was an offshoot of Generation X, and their only LP "Expensive Sound" remains an obscure (yet highly rewarding) listen.Originally released in 1981, the same year Gary Numan and Soft Cell were raking in big bucks with their noir-flecked brand of retrofuturism, "Expensive Sound" was out-of-step with the climate of commercial music. Their music was raw, bare, warm - distinct from the glacial, antiseptic pop that would dominate the decade. The album was neither totally forward-looking nor nostalgia embracing. Instead, "Expensive Sound" does what great albums tend to: preserves a specific moment in time.There's an arid, unvarnished quality to the recordings - typified by frontman Derwood Andrews's voice and words. He sang with uncommon fragility and in a soft, almost diffident voice. There's little reverb, almost no double tracking, and absolutely no attempt to Americanize his delivery.The subject matter is rendered in a similar, disarmingly plain way. Boredom, depression, unrequited love, and existential dread are treated in equal parts -sans one song about playing the electric guitar (the aptly titled 'Electric Guitar'). While Derwood's lyrics exhibit some of the doom-and-gloom sentiment of post-punk progenitors Joy Division, they are almost Holden Caulfield-esque in their simplicity. Empire's response to adversity is delivered with a shrug and a sigh.If Andrew's bashful vocals are part of the charm, his expressive guitar playing is the main attraction of "Expensive Sound". As the sole guitarist on the record, he demonstrates a versatility unusual for the band's punk roots - deftly maneuvering between chunky, minimalist riffing (like on 'Hot Seat'), vast swathes of dark noise ('Empire'), and lacerating, tightly coiled leads ('Safety'). While "Expensive Sound" may be better known for the bands it inspired - the neo-psychedelia of The Stone Roses and the athletic fretwork of Fugazi - they deserve appreciation on its own merits: one of the finest guitar pop records of the era.

Black feminist punk band Big Joanie have announced their upcoming second album 'Back Home', set for release 4th November on Daydream Library Series in the UK and Kill Rock Stars in the US. The brand new album 'Back Home' follows on from last month's one-off single 'Happier Still', and the release of their 2020 single 'Cranes in the Sky', a cover of Solange Knowles released on Jack White's Third Man Records. Recorded at Hermitage Works Studios in North London, 'Back Home' was produced and mixed by Margo Broom (Goat Girl, Fat White Family) and features violin courtesy of Charlotte Valentine of the experimental art rock project No Home, who recently collaborated with the LA-based artist Sasami. 'Back Home' is a dramatic leap forward for the band; the band build on their tightly knit, lo-fi punk formula to bring forth a collage of blazing guitars, down tempo dance punk, and melancholic strings that evoke the full depth of the band's expansive art punk vision. The album title references a search for a place to call home, whether real or metaphysical. "We were really ruminating on the idea of a home and what it means," explains Stephanie. "It's about the different ideas of home, whether that's here in the UK, back in Africa or the Caribbean, or a place that doesn't really exist; it's neither here nor there." The band worked with multidisciplinary artist Angelica Ellis to design the striking embroidered cover art, which is a depiction of Chardine's nephew at the barbers. The artwork is a reference to the embroidered wall hangings popular in Caribbean homes post-Windrush that were a callback to the homes they left behind. The album's strength lies in the band's bold and varied new sound. Album opener 'Cactus Tree' is an eerie, gothic folk tale that tells the story of a woman waiting for her lover while a wall of euphoric harmonies and screaming feedback roll in the background. Lead single 'Happier Still' is a driving, Nirvana-influenced track that grapples with the idea of wanting to push through a depressive episode. Inspired equally by the melodic rock of Hüsker Dü and the mystical sensibilities of Stevie Nicks, closer 'Sainted' brings the club-ready sentiment of the 2018 single 'Fall Asleep' to its natural conclusion.

The Catatonics were Syracuse and Central New York’s first hardcore punk band. Drift, their fifth studio album sees Pianos Become THE Teeth taking another sonic step forward to craft a musical statement that truly transcends genres. For the recording of Drift, the band took it back to basics, starting at a family-owned cabin in the woods of Virginia, that they transformed into an analog recording studio. The band lived together, recorded together and ate dinners together where they would listen to the day's recordings, talk about them and pull them apart and reworking them, creating what may be their finest album to date. Per front man Kyle Durfey, "Something that we really took away from this experience was just the connection we had together. We produced the record ourselves with our longtime friend/collaborator/engineer Kevin Bernsten who recorded our first two records." The recordings that the band created using innovative recording techniques, recording 100% analog are sonically transportive and certain to mystify and inspire generations of recording artists. All the echoes were made with old echoplexes and tape delay, which made for a really organic record. With Bersten's help the band was able to take some of the weirder and more ambitious ideas they had and turned them into reality making this a fantastic album for immersive headphone listening.
