"At some point it becomes clear to all of us that trying to navigate life on The Darkest Timeline is pretty heavy going. In case you hadn’t guessed where this was going, please welcome the grand, timely and thoroughly welcome return of Chain Whip. Straight out of the gate, their second full-length Call Of The Knife is absolutely raging. The opening title track might have you squinting at the turntable for a couple of seconds to check that someone hasn’t reanimated the young Circle Jerks, but as soon as frontman Josh Nickel’s voice kicks in, hardcore cognoscenti will be under no illusions that they could possibly be listening to anyone else. His voice is a righteous, gravelly roar that cuts straight through the noise with the very loose subtext ‘I’m having a bad day and it’s imperative that you know about it’. There’s a vitality to it that helps make these Vancouver boys one of the best bands in punk today, and it helps that he’s backed up by a rattling, rolling collective who remind us all that good old-fashioned hardcore (like the ‘80s used to make) remains one of the best ideas anyone’s ever had. Suck on that idea for a moment, poindexter! You know what you’re getting with song titles like ‘Class Decay’ and ‘Hatewave’, but there’s something about the band’s garage-slanted take on the genre that makes ‘em a cut above. Panache? Chutzpah? Just the simple matter of really fkn good songs? Impossible to say, so let’s just settle by agreeing that this album does it all: you can skate to it, you can slam to it, you can paint your bedroom black to it. You can even listen to it while kicking over the statues and kickstarting that violent and bloody revolution we’ve been promised. Look, this is serious stuff that also happens to be oodles of fun. ‘Something’s gotta give,’ they sing, and maybe it’s your resistance. Philly's own Chained Bliss set tongues a-waggin' back in 2019 with their Stained Red cassette EP, gathering more than a few comparisons to the Wipers' early racket in the process. Well, now they're back with a debut album that seems to have skipped right ahead from Is This Real? to Over The Edge: this self-titled LP has all the gut-punching ramalama, knockabout guts'n'glory of that first tape, with added layers. Melodic guitar lines come perilously close to jangling over crunching power chords, while furiously yelped choruses give way to sumptuously put-together breakdown sections that catch you off guard and kick you in the shins before legging it down the street. Chained Bliss clearly love scrappy, skatey garage rock (echoes of Agent Orange's Living In Darkness abound) as much as they love pushing that raucous clatter into something spacious - the meditative sections that flow effortlessly into absolute ripper Pillars Of Abuse are as unexpected as the thoughtful but head-spinningly energetic sections that bring Creative Seizure so thrillingly to life. Other times they're just as happy to keep you careening towards the pit with two-minute bangers, but that's the beauty of this record: it's never smarter than when it's playing dumb, and the rest of the time it's just pretty damn smart. Here's a challenge: can you listen to Ominous Life's gnarly pop without raising those fists of yours skywards and landing a firm thump on the air? Or Drifter's swaggering stomp? Meanwhile Gardens' is the new album by Chelsea punk band, released on the bands 45th anniversary. Nic Austin on guitar collaborating with bass player Mat Sargent, deliver the Chelsea trademark sound. Vocalist Gene October contributes his own tracks performing with his distinct vocal sound and Steve Grainger completes the line-up on drums. This is Chelsea's 12th studio album and includes ex-Chelsea members from throughout the years as guest musicians. Martin Stacey & Bob Jesse from the 1977 line up, James Stevenson from the debut album, Rob Miller from the Traitors Gate album and Mike Spenser from The Cannibals guests on harmonica. The album cover was designed and drawn by the band in the back of the tour bus. Many of the tracks for the album were written on the road during the 2019 European tour and the album was recorded in-between lockdowns in 2020.

It's always nice to put out something from your hometown. It's even better when that something is this good. Cherry Cheeks is the work of fellow Orlando resident (recently relocated to Portland) Kyle Harms. Started in early 2020, Cherry Cheeks was born out of countless hours stuck in front of a computer screen with a raging pandemic outside. Kyle put his boredom, boiling over anger, and frustration to work and started a new project. He put out a few bandcamp EPS and limited run tapes that a mutual friend back home turned me onto. He also informed me that there was even better stuff that hadn't yet been released. I hit Kyle up, he sent me a few tracks, and boy was my friend right. EGG Punk, Devo-core, Quarantine Punk.. whatever the kids are calling it these days this is 12 tracks of bass driven, pop stained, punk agitation. I'm very proud of this record and am ecstatic to say it is indeed 100% Total Punk!!!!

As Chuck Mosley (ex Faith No More & Bad Brains) embarked on the Reintroduce Yourself Tour, which saw him play around 160 shows during the last two years of his life, he had an idea about releasing a live collection of songs. Part of the point of the tour was to give Chuck a chance to revisit his past, in Cement, VUA, and even some stuff he wrote way back in the day. This release has a mix of those, along with one brand new song, Blue Heart, which he wrote a few months before passing. Quality recordings are scarce and others were sabotaged by off-time clapping, buzzing old amps, and endless stage banter. While we were never polished, never perfect, nor did we get all the lyrics correct, this record is 100% Chuck Mosley, and we think you'll dig it.

While the average person might think of Buffalo, NY, for its frigid winters and its contributions to the world of professional football, the initiated know Buffalo best for its outsized role in hardcore’s history. The city has produced more than its fair share of genre-defining acts, not least of which was the criminally short-lived, under-documented, and wildly innovative Cinderblock, whose members would go on to such legendary bands as Snapcase, Buried Alive, Earth Crisis, Terror, and more. Thirty years after their initial existence, Cinderblock has reconvened in order to commit their music to vinyl for the first time. Breathe The Fire is a collection of six songs originally conceived in the early ’90s, re-recorded by the band with accomplished producer Jay Zubricky at the helm. With tight grooves, adept melodic sensibilities, and a pummeling heaviness that presaged nearly the entire breadth of ’90s hardcore, the record is a critical document of one of hardcore’s most exciting and transitional periods. It’s not often that a band is afforded the opportunity to retroactively cement their legacy as pioneers, but Cinderblock has more than earned that right, and Breathe The Fire firmly cements their long overdue place in the hardcore canon.

“Oddities, Abnormalities And Curiosities” is an absolutely fresh and honest album is often overlooked. There's still the old playfulness and anarchic aggressiveness ("Brick", "Career Day"), paired with an ironic wink, and the rough edges that will probably protect them from commercial frenzy this time too. If Keith then goes back to work frustrated, it's not at least your fault, tight-fisted ignorants. Full of blazing guitars, thundering drums and ear-piercing screams, and while it isn't entirely slam dance worthy like their earlier albums, any real fan should appreciate this as a true punk rock piece of art. Circle Jerks fans, who remembered the band for their short street anthems and sarcastic political songs of the early 80's seem to forget that in 1995 when this record was recorded, Reagan wasn't in the white house. Sure, things weren't perfect politically, but the Circle Jerks weren't known for their political dissent. They sang about everything. They were the party band, and on Oddities it shows.

Kjehl Johansen, guitarist and songwriter for the Circlons, first surfaced in 1978 with the influential minimalist punk band THE Urinals. Kjehl went on to play in other notable projects such as Trotsky Icepick, which released 7 albums on SST Records, and the lo-fi pop trio Narrow Adventure, who have a current album out on Austin-based Spacecase Records. His latest project is the Circlons, featuring Hunter Crowley on drums, Steve Andrews on rhythm and lead guitar, and TOM Hofer on bass. These seasoned veterans played in Trotsky Icepick, THE Last, and the Leaving Trains. The Circlons’ first release explores the dark underbelly of the music business in all its cynicism and glory. On the lead-off track, “I Wanna Be On Your Radio (Not In Your Arms),” vocalist John Talley-jones (Urinals, 100 Flowers) plants his tongue firmly in cheek and portrays a ruthless careerist using his girl- friend’s tears to write a song and get a record deal.
