Charlie Manning is Chubby AND THE Gang. The 30-something-year-old born-and-bred Londoner kicked off the project in 2019 with the intention of blending hardcore punk with the most infectious elements of ’70s rock ‘n’ roll and doo-wop. Charlie brought in a “gang” of rotating instrumentalists performing on the albums Speed Kills (2020) and The Mutt’s Nuts (2021), both released through Partisan Records. Fast forward to now, and for the release of the upcoming album And Then There Was..., Chubby AND THE Gang joins long-running hardcore label Flatspot Records. The album is 16 songs written and performed by Charlie, produced by Jonah Falco, and recorded and mixed by James Atckinson. It’s a mix of control and chaos, love and loneliness, rage and vulnerability. The songs scream to be heard in a live setting, but feel just as at home playing over the speakers of a dimly lit local pub. “There’s A Devil In The Jukebox” is a roaring punk track. “The Bonnie Banks” storytelling nature leads to repetitive refrain that is begging to be shouted along with. There’s the raucous and simply put “Anticop.” An expansive, drawn-out moment of facing mortality on “To Fade Away.” And the record ends with an emotive piano ballad in “Cocaine Sunday.” Throughout And Then There Was..., Charlie exposes his prowess for melody and exposition of true self.

Kronstadt Uprising took their name from the uprising at the Kronstadt Naval Base in 1921. Lenin referred to the incident as “the flash that lit up reality better than anything else”.

Formed in Southend-On Sea, Essex in 1981, Kronstadt Uprising survived six turbulent years with many members coming and going. However, far from being a negative factor, it produced a very stimulating and creative environment that lead to an ever evolving musical style that can be heard on this CD.

Founder member Steve Pegrum was encouraged by the self-empowerment message and ethos of punk rock. In 1979 he acquired a drum kit and formed several punk bands. By 1981 the scene was starting to fragment. The area of punk that now interested Steve was that which stayed true to the original DIY ethic and this developing scene encouraged Steve to form Kronstadt Uprising.

By November 1981 the band were ready to record. They recorded nine tracks and sent the tape to Crass who decided to use ‘Receiver Deceiver’ on Bullshit Detector Vol. 2, released in September 1982. Also in 1982 the band recorded ‘The Unknown Revolution’ EP under the production of John Loder and Derek Birkett at Southern Studios for Spiderleg Records. The record was eventually released a year later.

Late 1983/1984 saw the band move away from the confines of the current punk scene and concentrate on writing new material. However, after three years various members felt they had progressed as far as they could and in March 1984 they played their final concert in London.

In the Summer of 1984 Steve decided he wanted to continue playing, so a new Kronstadt Uprising emerged with a totally new line-up. In April 1985 they recorded the ‘Part Of The Game’ EP for local Dog Rock Records. The band continued to gig and increased their fan base, but diversifying music tastes within the band took their toll and they eventually decided to call it a day in 1987.

Always true to punk, but never happy being genericised or put into any kind of musical straightjacket, this CD shows the ever-evolving Kronstadt sound.

Limited to 300 copies, the 15 tracks feature both singles, their Bullshit Detector Vol. 2 appearance and seven studio recordings including one previously unreleased, packaged with a 12″ x 12″ insert with previously unseen photos and a detailed history from founder member Steve Pegrum.

Following up their Lukko cassette from 2021, Sorry State presents the debut vinyl from Joensuu, Finland’s Valtatyhjiö. While Valtatyhjiö takes inspiration from furious 80s Finnish hardcore punk, they don’t allow reverence for the classics to box in their sound, crafting a unique and instantly identifiable blend of hardcore, punk, metal, and rock and roll. The title track leads off Kuristusleikki by going straight for the jugular, but by the second song, “Petoksen Messias,” the scope widens, bringing in black metal touches and double bass drumming, the creative and tasteful deployment of which is a hallmark of Valtatyhjiö’s sound. On the b-side, “Viilto Kerrallaan” has a big riff and a rock-and-roll swing, while “Riite” closes the EP on an ominous note, sounding like a more hateful version of label-mates Zorn. Like Zorn, Valtatyhjiö’s music floats between hardcore, punk, and metal seamlessly and organically. While those genres can feel like they’ve been done to death, Valtatyhjiö finds their voice in the spaces between and across them, their originality granting them direct access to the intensity at this music’s core.

Cuts like “Cold Piece” and “Blow” deliver classically ominous NOX garage-soul, with detuned guitars bellowing like they’ve been set on fire—and at the end of the day, haven’t they? And the title track, side 1’s closer, positively Drips with heavy-lidded psych R&B, successfully synthesizing melanin and melatonin as it lends a menacing underground edge to the tradition of black psychedelia in ways that could make Sly himself proud.

To mend this rapidly declining rock image they´ve decided to release what they consider to be their worst album so far: A collection of B-songs that have never made the list when assembling the list of Norwegian Grammy nominated classics. This upcoming album is nothing less of a wonderful bouquet of contemptuous elegies who haven't yet found a place on the big, dark web. Truth be told the opinionated armor GBZ has been hiding behind was mostly for show, they’ve always beat around the bush – or as we say in Norwegian: had a walk around the porridge.

Folk Devils, the London group that took their name from a well-known academic text on social scapegoating, and who blazed a trail across the UK's independent music scene of the mid-80s with their unique brand of post-punk energy, have returned with their first new music in 35 years. Recorded at London's famous Konk Studios in North London and mixed and co- produced by Grammy Award-winning engineer Rik Simpson, the re-born Folk Devils drew inspiration from the release of their 2016 career retrospective "Beautiful Monsters" and the reactions at subsequent live shows around the UK with kindred spirits Membranes, Inca Babies and The Cravats. Founder members, guitarist Kris Jozajtis and bassist Mark Whiteley, reformed the group by recruiting members of a short-lived 1987 version of Folk Devils; guitarist Nick Clift and drummer John Hamilton. Together with singer Dave Hodgson they soon discovered they had created a well-oiled twin-guitar juggernaut that brimmed with the same restless, twisted blues that characterized the first and second iterations of the band from 1983-87 when they were fronted by the highly underrated and now sadly-departed singer/songwriter Ian Lowery. Hodgson, a fellow transplant from the North-East, had known Lowery in the early 80s prior to Folk Devils, when the two were in their respective post-punk bands Ski Patrol and Parting Shots.

Violent Ritual is the third EP from Los Angeles’s Personal Damage, originally released on a small run of self-released cassettes in 2022 and now upgraded to vinyl courtesy of Sorry State. Violent Ritual offers five tracks of Personal Damage’s trademark snot-fueled, short-fast-and-loud hardcore punk, the longest track clocking in at a mere 80 seconds. While the songs are short, they’re hardly insubstantial, packing albums worth of excitement into each delicately constructed and tightly wound composition. Pedal-to-the-floor fast parts are punctuated by Lucky Lehrer-style rhythmic inventions, each song building toward a climactic guitar solo and/or call-and-response chorus. While so many contemporary hardcore bands de-emphasize the vocals, they’re Personal Damage’s most potent weapon, with all three members contributing to the dynamic vocal arrangements and every track offering a chance to shout along. While the first four tracks blazes at early Gang Green velocities, the closing “Banned from Society” stretches things out ever so slightly with a classic SoCal rhythm and the record’s most anthemic vocal. What started out as an exciting career kick off back in 2019, with the Fat Skeleton EP on Iron Lung Records, Homeless Cadaver continued to write with the intention of making more records and finally playing a show but the 2020 police had alternate plans for the band. We don’t need to get into the details on that but they’re out now and picking up where they left off. Before the break they had recorded most of these four songs intended for a release on a Southern Californian label (details also withheld here, NDA blah blah blah) but the label didn’t have the patience to deal with the mess so HC was dropped and the world moved on. Well kinda, it was early 2020, so I guess you could say the world moved… in. Anyway, the band finished the songs late last year and sent them to us so here we are, offering stripped down, juvenile thug synth KBD inspired garage stains about hustling, dating and excessive pleasures. Speaking of excessive, at one point during the Champale Wishes and Cadaviar Dreams completion phase the band did up some deluxe horn and string arrangements to accompany the EP. And then laughed really really hard when they threw them directly in the trash because “that shit sucks” and “what are we Juliards?”. They certainly have a way with words... 200 copies of black 70gr vinyl housed in a hand cut and assembled, silk screened glue pocket sleeve. Recorded in their rehearsal shed. I Know a Girl Who Develops Crime Scene Photos is the only proper full-length album from Tampa, Florida’s Combat Wounded Veteran. Recorded by Steve Heritage (assück) at Morrisound at the beginning of 1999, it was initially released via LP and CD formats from No Idea Records. In spite of being a staple in late 1990s/early 2000s power violence/short, fast, and loud DIY hardcore, both formats slipped out of print over the years. April 7, 2023, saw all I Know a Girl Who Develops Crime Scene Photos songs being formally reissued and made available for streaming and download platforms in an official capacity. The digital releases are part of a larger project, wherein Dark Operative will now be administering the band’s entire discography and reissuing all of the material in a series of vinyl releases in the months to come. This first reissue is but one of three 12”s to come.

A couple of years ago, seemingly from out of nowhere, Siege Fire appeared with a scorching demo tape released as a two-person project with Mike from Decomp, Genogeist, etc. playing all the instruments and laying down vocals. Fast forward to 2024, Mike has transformed this project into a full fledged band with members Lockheed and NYX Division among others. They have been destroying stages in and around Portland, dropping jaws and blowing out ear drums.
