“In November of 1982, I went into the studio with Government Issue to record what was to be their first full-length album. Up until that time, they had only released the Legless Bull 7-inch EP, and the tape they recorded early 1982 would take over a year and a half to be released as the Make An Effort 7-inch EP. The members of G.I. excelled at driving each other crazy and there was a lot of arguing, but still we had a great session at Inner Ear and we managed to track 20 songs in one day. From the beginning the band had been divided on what to record, and it was only after much debate that they decided to leave off the material they had recorded with the earlier line-ups and only put out 10 new songs. In early 1983 Dischord was strapped for cash, meaning that we could only work on one release at a time. Since all of our money was tied up with the manufacturing of Minor Threat’s Out of Step 12-inch EP, the G.I. record would have to wait. A new DC label, Fountain of Youth expressed an interest in releasing Boycott Stabb, so it was decided to do a ‘split-label’ record. In this case, Fountain of Youth put up the money and we let them use the Dischord Records name to help with context and distribution. It has since been reissued on a number of different labels and formats, but after coming across the master tapes and hearing the songs that had been left off, we thought it would be cool to release the complete session, and to fi nally release the record on Dischord proper. In going through the tapes, I discovered that most of the outtake songs were never mixed, so earlier this year I took the recordings back into the studio. Hearing the separated tracks amazed me. Such great playing and songs! With the technological advances in the recording world making multi-tracking and overdubbing so common, it’s easy to forget that studios could also be used as something more akin to a photo-booth, capturing what was happening at that very moment. Most of the early Dischord sessions were essentially ‘live’ recordings, so the bands had to be able to play, and because the budgets were minuscule, they had to get the songs down in short order. Faith and Minor Threat broke up within months of each other in 1983. During 1983 and ‘84 there was a general malaise in the DC hardcore scene which saw a lot of the founding bands and scene makers move to the sidelines as shows became increasingly violent and the attitude became increasingly mainstream. In the summer of '85 there was renewed spirit, often referred to as "Revolution Summer," (ushered in by the Rites of Spring and members of a band that formed later called Fire Party). This "Revolution Summer" included a handful of bands who preferred smaller more intimate venues and focused on a more personal and introspective interpretation of punk rock. Embrace was part of this renewal. They were formed by ex-Minor Threat member IAN Mackaye and three of the former members of Faith. They played shows from the summer of 1985 until the Spring of 1986.

Having played with the likes of influential movers and shakers on the anarcho-punk scene Antisect and Icons of Filth, on their first full-length LP, Birmingham’s Sacrilege established themselves as a unique force to be reckoned with, wreaking havoc on what we could classify as sonic tropes belonging to a spectrum of subgenres dealing in the extremes: hardcore, doom, and thrash. Fronted by Lynda ‘Tam’ Simpson and her seizure-inducing spells injected with a fierce, sociopolitical-cum-mythopoeic banshee bite (but not wanting to understate the line-up of Damian Thompson on guillotine-quick/milkshake thick guitars) - the six-track onslaught is every bit as crushing as the title suggests. From depraved dungeon synth-scapes on opener Lifeline to the planet-flattening funeral toll of The Closing Irony, one question remains: One riff to rule them all? Yes.

Street punk pioneers Charged G.B.H. formed in Birmingham in 1978, the name referencing original bassist Sean McCarthy’s trial for grievous bodily harm. The in-your-face hardcore of EP “Leather, Bristles, Studs And Acne,” paved the way for super-charged debut LP, City Baby Attacked By Rats, which hit the number two position on the British indie charts on release in 1982, as well as the mainstream top 20, despite being released by tiny independent, Clay Records. With a touch of Motorhead and Sabbath beneath their straight-up hardcore, City Baby is where the legend begins, capturing G.B.H. at their bloodiest.

Formed in the northern English market town of Stoke on Trent in 1981, likeable street punk/Oi! trio Section 5 built a reputation through their solid live gigs, bagging a contract with Roddy Moreno’s Oi! Records for debut album We Won’t Change in 1985. This expanded edition of that top-notch LP includes five bonus demos recorded when the group was a four-piece, with Dave ‘Mask’ Maskery on lead vocals, before his departure led founding member/guitarist Tosh to tackle the front-man duties. A prime Oi! listening experience!

Frontman MJ Howells and his drumming brother Peter Purrfect formed glam-rock band Rockslide in Manchester in the mid-1970s with bassist Wispa Cundall and guitarist Vic Long but changed direction after seeing the Sex Pistols; Long was replaced by guitarist Gus Gangrene and after shifting to London, their new identity was pure punk. Debut EP Temptations Of A White Collar Worker sold 14,000 copies in short shrift, paving the way for the dynamite LP Further Temptations, the sole long-player they managed before splitting in the mid-1980s. Brash, bold, defiant and non-conformist, Further Temptations kicks ass!

It’s 1980 in Orange County, California, and Punk Rock has been scorching the ‘burbs for a few years. Eddie Joseph has been on the Southern California scene the entire time, plotting his poisonous rock’n’roll maneuvers since the mid 1960s when he began playing in garage bands. Eddie had been honing his skills on roots music and swinging teenbeat well in advance of his foray into a new, seedy, violent punk blitzkrieg. There’s a master plan at work here, and it involves select players depending on which direction Eddie needs to bleed out of his system. The recruitment of Mike Patton and Matt Simon of OC legends THE Middle Class get Eddie AND THE Subtitles rolling for a slew of shows with comrades Black Flag, Adolescents, Circle Jerks and every other degenerate crew in the radius. A DIY imprint called No Label Records is formed (with literally NO Labels on the vinyl!) and the first single “Fuck You Eddie!” is unleashed. Recorded in Fullerton by JON ST. James at his legendary Casbah studio (The Vandals, Social Distortion, Berlin), these sessions also yielded a handful of tracks that would appear on the exceedingly rare Skeletons In The Closet LP (No Label Records, 1981). “Zombie Drug Killers,” “No Virgins In Hollywood,” and “American Society” (the short fast loud version covered by L7) appear here as the opening trio on this newly re-sequenced reissue. Geza X is also on board to produce a handful of tracks with peripheral Subtitles including Nicky Beat (germs, Weirdos) among the sessions’ players. The results here are another manifestation of Eddie’s one true love. Even as a punk allegiant, songwriting, sound and style are the priority. The dusted and dark goth-pop of “Magic” and “Stream of Consciousness” are crucial to the plot, setting a unique tone that works in a sea of one-dimensional scene releases, taking full advantage of Geza’s synth-mimicking microtonal guitar techniques. A tribute to Dave Dacron, chief miscreant of Dangerhouse Records’ Rhino 39 is also set to tape as consolation to X, as Dacron’s 16 year old life was tragically cut short in an automobile accident in 1980. But the party rocks on with covers of “Louie Louie” (also appearing on the elusive Fuck You Eddie! single) and “We Gotta Get Out of This Place,” as a testament to Eddie’s obsession with the timeless now-sounds of his delinquent adolescence. Friends and fellow freaks JON Blair (of surf cats JON AND THE Nightriders) and Bobby Paine (later of rockabilly hepsters THE Paine Brothers) lend their own song-smithery for four more originals: “Boppin’ Little Bobcat, ”“Treat me Right,” “Gina” (covered in 1984 by Josie Cotton and again in ‘89 by Stray Cats) and “Your Head’s In The Right Place,” respectively. Skeletons In The Closet remains an unusual and rare artifact in the ashtray world of punk, DIY and outsider music, and Slovenly Recordings is blasted to present it to the world one more time.

In the late ’70s, The Avengers established themselves as one of the US’s preeminent punk bands. Fusing incisive guitar hooks, explosive rhythms and adolescent venom, the group forged some of the most in-your-face songs of the era. Their live shows were legendary, playing up and down the West Coast and even blowing Sex Pistols off the stage at the latter’s final performance.

As Byron Coley writes in the liner notes, “Of the best bands of San Francisco’s first wave in 1977, The Avengers were by far the coolest and youngest sounding. They roared without irony, as though this were indeed Year Zero (and, for a moment, it was), with history being overwritten by the new. The honesty of their belief was carried by their sound. And it was convincing!”

Originally released in 1983, four years after the band’s dissolution, The Avengers’ self-titled LP is often referred to as “The Pink Album” for its magenta-hued cover design. Frontwoman Penelope Houston’s iconic voice and razor-sharp lyrics resonate on anthems “We Are The One” and “The American In Me,” while penetrating ballads like “Corpus Christi” reveal a truly out-of-body euphony.

The Pink Album remains The Avengers’ definitive statement—collecting their classic Dangerhouse EP, sessions recorded with the Pistols’ Steve Jones and a half-dozen revelatory demos. While much has been written about The Avengers in the past three decades, rock critic Greil Marcus puts it succinctly, “The word I always come back to is mystical, and that remains almost theirs alone.”

Hubble Bubble is a Belgian punk band in which Plastic Bertrand started his career. Formed in 1973 by Alain Bureau and managed by Bernard Schol, the band released a self-titled album in 1977 on Barclay Records. Plastic Bertrand is listed as a songwriter, singer, and drummer under the name Roger Junior. Reissue of the first Hubble bubble album originally released on Warner Bros records in 1977.

Formed in the wealthy coastal town of Darien Connecticut in the early 1980, hardcore punk band Vatican Commandos released their debut EP, Hit Squad For God, in 1983, followed swiftly by the Just A Frisbee EP. Recorded in the summer of 1984, shortly before their ultimate demise, the blistering EP Point Me To The End captures the band at their most competent, bolstered by high production values, with a one-off poem by beat-punk poet Earl broadening the boundaries; this edition is made complete by the inclusion of crucial bonus tracks ‘Your World Is Flat’ and ‘Morality,’ from the ultra-rare compilation Make It Work.

Deeply inspired by Aleister Crowley’s esoteric thinking , Thelema are regarded as one of the crucial 80’s post-punk acts from Italy. Orignally released in 1986 Tantra was the band’s debut album, a unique chemistry between occultism, acid guitars and pagan rhythms.

Hailing from Britain’s formerly industrial heartland of North Yorkshire, The Burial was a forward-facing ska-punk/Oi band with a strong Left orientation, channelling 2Tone, Northern Soul, punk, and folk influences. Rhythm guitarist Eric ‘Barney’ Barnes made sure the world knew these skinheads were antifascist and the use of a full horn section made their sole LP, A Day On The Town, stand out. Unlike the Redskins, who soon moved to the student circuit, The Burial remained embedded in the working class communities from whence they came; this fine, often overlooked LP will be devoured by all fans of ska-punk and Oi!.

Punk only hit Italy in 1980, and the hardcore scene followed straight after confirming itself as one of the most active and interesting scenes in the world. Back in the day most of the bands came from the north of the country, among them: Negazione, a Turin based band which soon became one of the crucial Punk-Hardcore realities in Europe. Originally released by German label We Bite Records in 1988, "Little Dreamer" was Negazione's second album. Compared to their debut release this second effort shows a first step towards a more eclectic sound approach where thanks also to an evident growth in terms of technical skills the band's original inflamed energy opens up to a wider expressive variety of speeds and dynamics.

Lick is the third full-length album by the Lemonheads, and the last to feature founding member Ben Deily. It was the group's last independent label-released album before signing to major label Atlantic. An odd mixture of brand-new, and considerably older, sounds, 1989’s Lick brings together the output of several distinct recording sources: six brand new songs recorded with Minneapolis-based band friend and producer Terry Katzman, and a collection of older, B-side and never-released material originally overseen by producer and engineer Tom Hamilton.

Formed in Lewisham, southeast London, punk band the Business joined the Oi! scene after supporting the Four Skins in 198l. Debut single ‘Harry May’ hit the Indie charts before the group disintegrated, leading frontman Micky Fitz to recruit new members. Then, in 1987, original guitarist Nick Kent joined Fitz for heavy metal side project UK, with former Tank drummer Mark Brabbs, channelling their love of Ac/dc, Motorhead and Rose Tattoo. As Kent goes all-out with the hard rock solos and Fitz aims for the melodic, this is a great slice of the new wave of British heavy metal, and a startling surprise for all Business fans!
