Alexandra Sauser-Monnig and Amelia Meath have been yodeling together for upwards of fifteen years - in the backseat of a Prius while on their first cross-country tour, on back porches and backstages. It's what led them to Fruit, their debut release as The A's - a joyous ten-song collection spanning genre and decades, with interpretations of traditionals, lullabies, and an original song, it weaves between the weird and the wonderful."Why I'm Grieving," originally recorded by the DeZurik Sisters, was the inspiration for the A's existence. The A's reach into the past to hold hands with the DeZurik Sisters, two farm girls from rural Minnesota who taught themselves to yodel amongst all their animals, in a continuing celebration of the tradition of folk eccentricity and whimsy.The A's played their first show together in 2013 after Sauser-Monnig first moved to North Carolina, where Meath had been living at the time, but it wasn't until summer 2021 that they thought seriously about making Fruit. They decamped to Sylvan Esso's Chapel Hill studio, Betty's, for two weeks in the midst of a balmy and blooming Carolinian summer. They rehearsed during the day, deconstructing yodeling parts phonetically and staring absurdly into each other's eyes as they practiced tongue twisting harmonies - and recorded in the nighttime, candles lit, a flickering glow against the windows framing the violet twilight outside."There was a lot of giggling during the session," Sauser-Monnig explains. "At one point I was getting a tangle out of my hair and was like, oh, my God, that sounds really cool - the sound of my hands in my hair. And then I thought, what if we recorded hair for a percussion track? And then it just sort of snowballed."Across the record, the A's employ a bizarre-o ghost orchestra of strange noises that are percussive and melodic. Sam Gendel and Antonia Cytrynowicz didn't set out to make a record - it just happened. LIVE A LITTLE, a collection of songs resulting from one late summer afternoon in Gendel's Los Angeles home, is less an album and more a moment. The ten tracks here were recorded mostly in one sitting, fully improvised, in the order in which they appear. It was the first and last time the songs have been played - a snapshot of an idea, an artifact of inspiration, at once both a beginning and an end.At the time of recording, Cytrynowicz was only eleven years old. The younger sister of Gendel's significant other and creative partner Marcella, Cytrynowicz is an artist in her own way. She has no formal musical training, but is the product of a creative family and is someone who makes art the way many kids do - in the purest way, simply because they are moved to. On LIVE A LITTLE, she spontaneously crafted all the melodies and lyrics on the spot as Gendel played alongside her. Cytrynowicz's musicality is sophisticated, strange, and other-worldly, and the resulting record is experimental jazz colliding with some sort of fantasy universe.Because of that, LIVE A LITTLE is a stand-out amidst Gendel's extensive and varied catalog. Over the years, the multi-instrumentalist has been known for his prolific musical output as both a sought-after collaborator and as a solo artist. During 2021 alone he collaborated with Vampire Weekend, Maggie Rogers, Moses Sumney, Laurie Anderson, and Mach Hommy, as well as released Notes With Attachments with Blake Mills & legendary bassist Pino Palladino. Nathaniel Russell is a multi-disciplinary artist from Indianawho creates drawings, paintings, prints, murals, objects,videos, and music, often with friends and fellow artists.And in 2023, he packed up his car and drove from hishome in Indiana all the way to North Carolina to recordnew music with his long-time friend Amelia Meath (SylvanEsso, The A's) at Betty's, the wooded studio haven ofSylvan Esso, where recent releases from The Tallest Manon Earth, Caroline Rose, Wednesday, The A's, TheMountain Goats, Flock of Dimes, Indigo de Souza, andmany more have been born.This record began with a funny and sad idea Russell hadabout a funeral. "I imagined a picture of a funeral with amerch table. It was an idea full of darkness and sweetnessto me. Immediately I thought about what my merchandisewould look like, what it would be. I began to think aboutwhat the record for sale at my funeral would sound like. Istarted to think about the songs I have made up and sungto and with my friends, family, and myself over the years. Inoticed how the songs I had sung the longest seemedconnected to others from a different time. I had changedsome words and how I played them but they were all ofme and my time on earth. I heard how these things fittogether.
