King Pari is like potato chips, popsicles, velcro, slinkies — joyful inventions born from happy accidents. Joe Paris Christensen and Cameron Kinghorn had been playing in the same Twin Cities scenes for years, but when Joe sent Cameron a new tune he’d whipped up on a tape machine, something clicked. “This sounds like how my brain feels,” Cameron said. The band’s Minneapolis funk pedigree anchors their music. Beim Spazierengehen durch die menschenleeren Straßen von Hamburg hatte er plötzlich einen Basslauf und eine kleine Melodie im Ohr - und den passenden Refrain dazu: Corona Forever, Forever Corona. Oliver ging zu seinem Freund Carsten Meyer, besser bekannt als Erobique, und sang ihm seine Melodie vor. Carsten hat ein kleines Studio am Fischmarkt, in dem beiden gerade an einem Album arbeiten. Er setzte sich sofort ans Klavier. "Das ist bei uns immer so", sagt Oliver. "Ich singe was, und Carsten fängt an zu spielen." Sie reimten "House" auf "Mouse" und "Everbody's missing" auf "Handshakes, hugs and kissing". Zwei Sängerinnen aus Hamburg bildeten einen Chor, in dem man auf der Stelle Mitglied werden möchte, die Orchester-Begleitung kam aus dem Midi, und fertig war der Song: Corona Forever, Forever Corona Oliver Polak ist Entertainer, Schriftsteller und Gastgeber mehrerer Fernsehsendungen. Singen kann er auch, seine Stimme liegt irgendwo zwischen Barry White und Barry Manilow. Bekannt geworden ist er als deutsch-jüdischer Comedian mit einem ausgeprägten Hang zur Grenzüberschreitung. Doch wenn man seinen Corona-Song hört, wird schnell klar, dass dieses Lied kein Witz ist. Es beschreibt das lähmende Gefühl der Isolation und der Unsicherheit, das die letzten Monate geprägt hat und das wohl auch so schnell nicht wieder verschwinden wird. Corona Forever, Forever Corona. Es ist kein Zufall, dass er dabei klingt wie der Sänger einer deutschen Synthiepop-Band aus den Achtzigern, die auf den internationalen Markt schielt. Damals hatte man keine Angst vor Pathos, und auch Oliver kennt keine Scheu vorm großen Gefühl, auch wenn es verwundbar macht. "Corona Forever" ist Clubhit und Schmusesong in einem. Der Zustand der Unsicherheit und der Hilflosigkeit wird von einem Refrain aufgehoben, der sich ausbreitet wie eine kuschelige Decke. Eine Decke, unter der die ganze Menschheit Platz hat. Forever Corana, Corona Forever!

January 20, 2020 saw the surprise release of David Lynch's short What Did Jack Do? on Netflix. If you watched the grainy, police procedural over the last few days, you most likely found yourself saying aloud `who is Jack Cruz and how can I get more of his music?' Sacred Bones is announcing the release of the short's featured original song "True Love's Flame" by the primate star crooner of yesteryear; Jack Cruz. Not much is known about Cruz's career prior to his involvement with Lynch, but fortunately, we have not just one song, but two: 'Dancin' in the World of Love' is the B-side to the short's single_uncovered recently and an excellent example of Cruz's emotional prowess and magical, gold-dipped vocal cords. Both songs were written by Lynch and Dean Hurley with artwork carefully crafted by Lynch himself.

In May of 1966, the unknown singer Jack Wood recorded two songs at Great Lakes Studio in Sparta, Michigan. These unique, otherworldly songs “Born to Wander” and “So Sad” would be self-released by Wood on his own Lawrence Records imprint in an edition of 100 copies. Going nowhere and being quickly forgotten, it would take Wood ten years to pay back the $250 he borrowed for the entire endeavor. Fast-forward to the 21st century and the deepest of record collectors are intrinsically moved by the power behind Wood’s single, vacillating between Northern Soul, garage, big band and country music all within the same song. An unexpected placement in a major ad campaign for Bacardi Rum was a major boon for the burgeoning awareness of these timeless songs.

Third Man Records is proud to reissue “Born to Wander” and “So Sad” as part of its return to Detroit.

The modernist Dreampop of Magic Island’s Wasted Dawn was catalyzed and nurtured by Berlin. The predominant Casio keyboard was found in the street, the project itself developed under the influence of a close circle of Berlin-based artists and friends, including Touchy Mob and Montreal’s Sean Nicholas Savage, while the compositions strongly reflect both the complex and most simplistic day-to-day emotions, events and surrounding environment. That particular magic has proven charming to many, as this year Magic Island has played at Fusion Festival, Torstraßen festival, C/O Pop Festival, at The Lab Magazine’s Regenerate event series, as well as opening for Fenster (Morr Music), Ballet School (Bella Union), Hundred Waters (OWSLA), Soft Metals (Captured Tracks) and Teen Daze.

Celebrating Light In The Attic's 10 year anniversary in 2012, we are releasing a series of very special colored vinyl 7"s and digital downloads. The series features contemporary artists covering a track reissued by Light In The Attic on the A-side, plus the original version on the B-side. In 2011, Seattle band Gold Leaves released one of our favorite albums of the year. The Ornament is their debut long player and was released by Hardly Art/Sub Pop. We've been obsessing over their sound ever since and are honored to have the band contributing a track for our 10 year anniversary 45 singles series. For the series, Gold Leaves record a hazy take on Lee Hazlewood's "Won't You Tell Your Dreams." Found on the flip side is Hazlewood's version, which was originally included on his solo album Requiem For An Almost Lady, released in 1971 on his label LHI. A-side is produced by Gold Leaves, engineered by Chris Early, and recorded in Seattle in September 2012. B-side features Lee's original version as remastered by John Baldwin for our recent compilation Lee Hazlewood - The LHI Years: Singles, Nudes, & Backsides (1968-71).

Swedish synth-pop phenomenon Kite's second 7 inch since signing with Dais in 2023 finds the duo of Nicklas Stenemo and Christian Hutchinson Berg swinging for new heights of romantic desolation and baroque grandeur. They describe the A Side, "Losing," as a "six-minute empty call for emotional response." Stately piano and anguished voice reverberate in a vaulted hall, before gradually building into a widescreen anthem of synths, drums, and soaring vocals decrying the steady deadening of life and love: "It's deadly quiet in your old heart / Are you there? / I see dark skies on the rise / And daylight shows no remorse / And I realize it is my life / But It's losing all meaning." Swedish dark music icons Anna von Hausswolff and Henric de la Cour join the chorus as the song cascades towards an ominous horizon. The B Side, "Glassy Eyes," showcases Kite's mastery of somber, sweeping balladry. Hushed church organ elevates and anchors Stenemo's devastated confessional, swaying between resilience and defeat. The band describes the song as a reckoning with "the privileged and existential anxiety of drifting through life dispassionately," contrasted with "the yearning to connect profoundly with others and a desire for experiences that stir the soul before facing one's final moments." Like a hymn, the emotion thickens as it deepens, approaching both darkness and divinity: "Deep as I go, nothing to find / Oh catatonia, I won't cry / Nothing can grow, everything dies / Behind my glassy eyes."

Walls & Birds‘ debut on the Berlin label Beatbude! Recorded with the aid of “The Whitest Boy Alive” keyboarder Daniel Nentwig at the local Butterama Recording Center, the vinyl is accompanied by a fold-out poster and a digital bonus track. Much like their previous releases, “Less than a kilometer away” is Walls & Birds’ new take on popular music today. The first song “Wearing a Dress” touches on the theme of modern clothing habits, while questioning relationship patterns still widespread in popular music lyrics. The surprising element of new found love is also one of the themes of the B-side “Heads & Tales”, telling the story of a late night after work taxi ride with the chorus contemplating about the eternal either or question, plainly answered with: love. The cheerful upbeat digital bonus track “Summer 2002” is as meaningless as most nice pop songs these days.
