„V I N C E N T“ ist FKJs zweites Album. Es markiert den Beginn eines neuen Kapitels für FKJ, der damit nach seinen Arbeiten als gefragter Produzent und zentrale Remix-Adresse für andere Künstler:innen wie PinkPantheress und Moses Sumney das nächste künstlerische Solo-Statement macht – nachdem er zuletzt schon ausverkaufte Konzerte in aller Welt mit seinen gefeierten „One-man-Shows“ verbuchen konnte. Kombiniert liegt auch die Zahl seiner Streams inzwischen im Milliardenbereich.

Das Konzept des „V I N C E N T“-Albums entstand während eines Soloabstechers nach Los Angeles, den er schon vor dem Jahr 2020 antrat. „Ich wohnte dort dann ganz allein in so einem Haus … und schaltete auch mein Telefon ab, um wirklich runterzukommen. Ich brauchte einfach etwas Abstand und Zeit für mich, weil ich herausfinden wollte, was ich eigentlich als nächstes machen wollte.“ Schon bald wurde ihm klar, dass er demjenigen Freiheitsgefühl nachspüren wollte, das man als Teenager hin und wieder spürt. „Damals habe ich einfach nur gespielt, es ging beim Musikmachen um nichts anderes. Ich hab über nichts nachgedacht“, so FKJ. Genau dieses Gefühl kommt schon im Eröffnungs- und dem Abschlusstitel der neuen LP durch: einerseits der Future Jazz von „Way Out“ – eigentlich ein verspielter Mini-Soundtrack: eine anmutige Pianomelodie, unterfüttert mit wilden Trap-Beats und ruhigen Streichern – und das fast wie ein Schlaflied wirkende „Stay A Child“. „Ich wollte einen Teil von dieser verlorenen Unschuld zurückholen … diesen Augenblick, wenn man einfach nur aus purem Vergnügen Musik macht.“

Wieder zurück im eigenen Home Studio auf den Philippinen angekommen, dort sogar ohne Wlan und zunehmend abgeriegelt durch internationale Lockdown-Maßnahmen, war FKJ nun tatsächlich abgeschnitten vom Rest der Welt. Was auch bedeutete: noch weniger Ablenkungen. Es war die ideale Gelegenheit, um ganz allein die endlosen Möglichkeiten der Musik zu erkunden. „Manchmal habe ich die ganze Nacht durch an den Songs gesessen und bin erst ins Bett gegangen, als schon wieder die Sonne aufging.“ Dieser unbefangene Ansatz war entscheidend: Basierend auf dieser Freiheit ist ein expressionistisches, wirklich berührendes Album entstanden, das man unmöglich einordnen kann. Auch versteckt sich FKJ nicht mehr hinter irgendwelchen grünen Zweigen, wie er es auf dem Cover seines Solodebüts getan hatte: Mit „V I N C E N T“ tritt FKJ heraus aus dem Schatten und zeigt sich, seine Stimme als Musiker, seinen Sound. Indem er Saxophon und Klavier aus Late Night Jazz-Sessions mit geerdetem Flüstergesang (à la Bon Ivers Frühwerk) und Gitarren à la Santana zusammenbringt, gibt er sogar dem schwierigen Begriff Chillout Music eine ganz neue Bedeutung.

Während weite Teile von „V I N C E N T“ vor allem romantisch klingen, geht’s ab und zu auch richtig sexy zu, dann wieder verträumt, den Kopf hoch oben in den Wolken – wie etwa bei „Us“, den er seiner Frau June widmet. „ihm“ kommt mit Nineties-Hip-Hop-Einschlag daher, wobei er jedoch immer weiter das Tempo drosselt und das Licht dimmt. Genau genommen doch nicht 100% solo eingespielt, hilft ((( O ))) schließlich beim Song „Brass Necklace“ aus – was ähnlich eindringlich klingt wie The Internet oder die Keys, wenn Stevie Wonder sie spielt. Zusammen mit Toro Y Moi setzt er für die Leadsingle „A Moment of Mystery“ auf astreine Space-Trip-Vibes, die tatsächlich aus nicht ganz nüchternen Parallelwelten stammen: Während der Arbeit in San Francisco tranken FKJ, Toro und dessen Keyboarder Tony eine Flüssigkeit, die Tony als „heiliges Wässerchen“ bezeichnete … „Wir teilten uns dann die ganze Flasche, was in einen ziemlichen Trip mündete“, erzählt FKJ und lacht. Zurück in der Realität, ist das Ergebnis dieses Trips eine sanfte Electro-Ode auf dauerhaftes Liebesglück. Vor allem ist es ein Track, der in Sachen Eingängigkeit und dezentem Prog-Faktor selbst Tame Impala in nichts nachsteht.

Auch Yukimi Nagano (Little Dragon) ist am Mikrofon zu hören – auf dem umwerfenden „Can’t Stop“ –, und mit „Let’s Live“, einem treibenden Technopop-Song, in dem Handclaps, Klavier und Vocals perfekt miteinander verschmelzen, besinnt sich FKJ noch einmal auf seine Anfangstage zurück, als seine Produktionen noch größtenteils ins Dance-Genre passten. Obwohl er immer wieder Kategorien aufsprengt und seine Stücke kontinuierlich mit neuen Ideen erweitert, wirken die Tracks nie aufgeblasen, nie zu dick aufgetragen. Trotz der Vielschichtigkeit wird einem nie schwindelig.

Insgesamt ist „V I N C E N T“ ein kleines Wunder. Es ist der Beweis, welche Magie entstehen kann, wenn man nur tief genug gräbt, Inspirationen lange genug reifen lässt. „Das war schon eine echte Herausforderung, diese Platte aufzunehmen“, sagt er abschließend. „Ich bin nun mal eigentlich ein Perfektionist – und das kann man nicht einfach so abschalten. Als ich es dann jedoch geschafft hatte und die Musik selbst tonangebend war, fühlte ich mich mit einem Mal vollkommen frei.“

Flogging Molly ist weniger eine Band als vielmehr eine transatlantische, keltische Punk-Institution. Über den Verlauf von 25 Jahren und nach tausenden von Konzerten auf der ganzen Welt hat Flogging Molly die Grenzen zwischen den Genres überschritten. Sie ist zu einer der wenigen Bands geworden, die buchstäblich an einem Tag mit The Chieftains und am nächsten Tag mit Motörhead die Bühne teilen. Für Flogging Mollys siebtes Album "Anthem" beschloss die Band um das Ehepaar Dave King (Gesang, Gitarre, Bodhrán) und Bridget Regan (Geige, Blechflöte, Backing Vocals), zu ihren Wurzeln zurückzukehren. Die Band nahm 14 Songs in 14 Tagen mit Steve Albini (Nirvana, Pixies) im Electrical Audio Studio in Chicago auf. Letztlich gibt es keine andere Band wie Flogging Molly, die so mühelos zwischen Punk und Folk wechseln kann. Die Tatsache, dass mittlerweile mehrere Generationen von Fans zu den Konzerten der Band kommen, ist ein Beweis für ihre anhaltende Relevanz. Damit schließt sich der Kreis zurück zu "Anthem". "Mit dieser Platte sind wir auf eine Art und Weise zu den Grundlagen zurückgekehrt, wie wir es nicht hätten tun können, wenn wir nicht schon seit 20 Jahren zusammen gespielt hätten", fasst King zusammen. "Ich glaube, dass es uns sehr viel Spaß gemacht hat, nach Chicago zurückzukehren und diese Platte mit Steve aufzunehmen, und ich glaube, das hört man der Platte auch an. The master sleuths at Dark Entries bring us Forbidden Overture, another tantalizing mystery from the hidden depths of sleaze. It all began years ago when Bijou Video’s Jules Zinn introduced the label to the soundtracks of the pornographic films of legendary filmmaker Steve Scott and gay superstar Al Parker. It wasn’t until The Magazine’s Bob Mainardi gifted a cassette copy of the soundtrack to the film Turned ON—a bathhouse fantasy from 1982—that the wheels started turning. The steamy, hypnotic sounds were credited only to “Forbidden Overture…” but who was that? This question remained unanswered for some time, and countless hours of research, Venn diagramming, and elaborate flow charts all proved fruitless. It wasn’t until a chance screening of BAD Girls Dormitory, a 1986 women-in-prison movie from gay porn director Joe Gage that happened to reuse some of the same music did the answer become clear: Forbidden Overture was none other than the mighty Man Parrish! The soundtrack to Turned ON consists of two epic side-long pieces, both of which employ classic Man Parrish production techniques. “Primal Overture” slinks along with brooding pads and ominous chords, building and oozing throughout its 27 minute runtime like a sultrier Goblin soundtrack. “Strictly Forbidden” takes a similar groove to a major key, but it’s optimistic chirp conceals a wry, mysterious wink. Says director Steve Scott: “It took us about two weeks to find the right piece for the jockstrap scene. But it's like anything else—you know when it’s right.” Also included is a 20 page booklet featuring photos, archival material, a pull-out poster, and interviews with Steve Scott and stars Al Parker and Scott Taylor. Turned ON is an exciting musical rediscovery as well as a vital document of queer history.

Swedish songwriter and multi-instrumentalist FredAtlast has announced his debut EP 'Banner Of A Lost Belief' to be released on Small Matter Records. Fred, currently better known for his day job as the bassist in Little Dragon, describes lead single 'One Day' as 'A meditation on impermanence and our way of dealing with loss. A plea to our nearest to be: nearer, dearer and more daring'. The EP was written in Fred's kitchen under the spiritual guidance of the late author Sven Lindqvist and has been his way of finding a direct voice, embracing a new sound and diving into the deep well. It was recorded in the Little Dragon studio in Gothenburg with help and support from the rest of the band who feature in different ways on the EP.

Fredrik Saroea is best known as the frontman of Norway's bizarre, global pisco punk sensation – Datarock. After years touring the world with alternative bangers such as "Fa-Fa-Fa" he now presents an entirely different side to his songwriting: As Covid-19 shut down live music, Saroea started recording in their label YAP Records' studio –yap HQ in Bergen (Norway) – with Datarock drummer Øyvind Solheim helping out engineering & co-producing. The 12 songs jammed in on the 28 minute long album was also mixed by Solheim & Saroea at YAP HQ, and then shipped to UK's legend Mike Marsh (Björk, Massive Attack, Oasis, Datarock) for mastering. The solo album Rona Diaries was inspired by everything from post-rock (like The Sea and Cake) via hard-core (like Fugazi), noise-rock (like U.S. Maple), space-rock (like Flying Saucer Attack), art-rock (like Blonde Redhead) to Morrissey's indie-classics, Sun Kil Moon's lyrical songwriting, John Martyn's etheric "Small Hours" and Scott Walker's ballads. The Release concert took place on May 28th 2021 with an internationally streamed concert in Norway's stately Grieg Hall – famous for the most iconic true Norwegian black metal recordings. Here, Saroea was backed by award-winning string quartet Bit20 Ensemble (Martin Shultz on violin, Liene Klava on viola, Agnese Rugevica on cello, Johannes Wik on harp with arrangements by Bjørn Morten Christophersen), merging his contemplative indie rock with the exquisite air of a chamber orchestra. Thus, the tracks from Rona Diaries were premiered to an unsuspecting public who were more familiar with his former band’s rhythmic brand of dance music. Featured in "Best Of" lists from Rolling Stone to NME and headlining festivals from Coachella, Lollapalooza, Reading and Leeds, Saroea's band Datarock impacted music scenes worldwide while also infiltrating both the videogame market with inclusion in Fifa and Sims and the commercial environ with ads for Apple, Google, Microsoft, Samsung and Coca Cola. While their singles including the smash "Fa-Fa-Fa" cemented them as dance sensations, Saroea moonlighted as a restaurateur by opening world famous and Michelin-rated restaurants Lysverket and Hoggorm in Norway. Rona Diaries: The Chamber Versions Live At The Grieg Hall, Bergen includes chamber versions of the Rona Diaries tracks plus two exclusive tracks. It was recorded by Kings of Convenience' sound engineer – André Luciano Trebbi – and mixed in Los Angeles by the two-time Grammy® winner Mark Rankin (Adele, Weezer, Florence and the Machine, Harry Styles) and mastered by Mike Marsh in the UK. Emotional Rescue returns to the music of British "pop" band Furniture, with an EP of the band's own extended versions, remixes and unreleased takes of their particular output. Taken from three 12"s that followed When The Boom Was On (ERC072), the songs included cast a light on their development from 3 to 5 piece, adding Sally Still (bass) and Maya Gilder (keyboards) and the new male/female frontline. The subsequent broadening of their line-up and sound meant they could start to address the kind of pop music they wanted to play. After the early releases garneered radio play and reviews, Furniture were launched into the melee of '80s pop. An anomaly, the band found they attracted a specific kind of "intense" follower, who were often beguiled by Furniture's freaky normality. This was addressed on the 1984 release, 'I Can't Crack'. A more urgent version of the sound Furniture had debuted with 'Why Are We In Love', the track, sung by Tim, was based around a sequencer-like rhythm played live by drummer Hamilton Lee, and a clarinet part played by Tim's brother, Larry Whelan. A mix of bleakness and euphoria, the song was and is a favourite of the band and considered one of their best self-productions, as well as becoming a latter day club play. This is followed by the studio experiment 'Throw Away The Script', where the band wrestled with sequencers and synth-pop, but then countered it with a free-jazz sax solo. Found on the flip of the double A -side of 'Love Your Shoes' 12", this instrumental version too became an underground club hit, including a cult play at Fran Lenaer's influential Valencia club, Spook Factory. Played loud, the studio mastery, trickery and oft-accidental discoveries come to the fore, with tissue-damaging frequencies giving extra sound system shaking bottom end. The B-side continues the band's love of making extended mixes with 'Dancing The Hard Bargain'. Co-produced with Tim Parry (formerly of Blue Zoo), they threw everything at these 12" versions. Able to relax and focus on the sounds they really liked, rather than the ones thought more commercial, this can be clearly heard on this compelling, percussive mix, a stop-start breakdown becoming a band hallmark. To close this collection is the mammoth 'Bullet'. Again sung by Whelan, an edited version of which debuted on the 1986 Survival compilation of Furniture tracks called 'The Lovemongers', here this previously unreleased original take is centred on a mesmeric tape loop, live drums and a guest appearance by violinist Helena Bjorelius.

We are proud to release a compilation from British post-punk/Futurist group Ghosts of Dance formed in North Devon in 1981. The members were Yvette Norris (vocals), Kevin Maynard (drums), Daryl Hunt (bass), Mark Butcher (keyboards), and Pete Heaton (guitar). Ghosts of Dance took their name from the song 'Ghosts' by David Sylvian which appeared on the first Japan album. After playing an early gig in Barnstaple, a gentleman in the audience named Richard Newman expressed his interest to start a record label and release their music. Richard scheduled a recording session for the band at Otter Studios in Georgeham with producer Harry Williamson, son of Henry Williamson, member of progressive rock band Gong. The debut single ‘Ghosts of Dance’ was released in 1982 on Plastic Canvas Records to mixed reviews as it was very different from anything being released at the time. Our compilation includes their debut single along with 9 bonus tracks recorded between 1981 and 1983 on vinyl for the first time. The band call themselves “Vocal Trance Music” on the 7” sleeve credits and it’s accurate. We call it melancholic pop with gloomy atmosphere and dream-like melodies. The final track shows the band moving in a New Romantic direction with Mark taking over the main vocals. All songs have been remastered by George Horn at Fantasy Studios. Each copy is housed in a jacket featuring original artwork by John Hurford and includes an insert with photos, lyrics and liner notes by Pete Heaton.

The A-side "Velvel Motel" (written by Takashi Matsumoto / produced by Eiichi Ohtaki) was a part of the long-seller masterpiece album "Long Vacation" by Eiichi Ohtaki, originally released in 1981. The B-side "Komugiiro No Mermaid" (written by Takashi Matsumoto / produced by Karuho Kureda a.k.a Yumi Matsutoya) is Seiko Matsuda's 10th single, originally released in 1982. Born in Tokyo in 1973 and raised in Kyoto. He made his debut in 1997 as the singer and main songwriter of the band Nona Reeves, which he formed while as a student at Waseda University. Since then, he has been involved in many productions and artists as a music producer, songwriter and composer. As an "80's music researcher," he has written official liner notes for Michael Jackson, Prince, and others, and many of his books have become bestsellers.

Vocalist Keely Dowd and producer Essej Pollock artfully bend and reconfigure popular trends in dance music into unconventionally catchy songs and a powerful live show. Their unique mix of hardware, software and sampling coalesce into irresistible rhythms and driving sequences that fuse perfectly with Dowd’s distinctive alto voice, forming music that is as instantly appealing as it is fascinating. With lyrics inspired by personal struggles and social inequality, GRÜN WASSER raises the bar on innovation in modern pop as they arrive on the national stage with Not Ok with Things.

As longtime friends, Dowd and Pollock formed GRÜN WASSER in 2015 out of the rich cultural hub of Chicago. Both had backgrounds in punk and electronic music and together crafted a dynamic live act that fit within a variety of niche genres and scenes. Amidst the hype of GRÜN WASSER’s first album Nein/9 in 2016, Dowd’s alluring stage persona blossomed, while offstage her personal life began to unravel due to alcoholism and resulting depression. Nevertheless, the two began touring the country while writing new material and by late 2017, Dowd was able to get sober just ahead of their self-released follow-up album. On 2018’s Predator/Prey, Dowd candidly spoke out against hyper-masculinity and challenged misogynistic cultural norms. The lyrics of her songs became woven into the live performance, with Dowd often venturing into the crowd and confronting audience members with an intensely honest portrayal of feminine empowerment. Perfectly paired, Pollock’s thumping, experimental beats complement Dowd’s hypnotic vocals and gripping stage presence, making GRÜN WASSER a potent combination of pop and art.

On Not Ok with Things, Dowd deconstructs her alcoholism and protests the gross imbalance of gender roles. This complex mixture of emotions provides a palpable overcast to Pollock’s cold bass lines and brooding synth tones. The lyrics on songs like “Translator” and “Tried Spitting at The Sun” depict a turbulent mind bracing the ups and downs of relapse and recovery, while “Worm” and “Gray/Grey” grapple with the social casualties of addiction. The heavy subject matter is delivered within organic arrangements that often deviate from a typical verse-chorus format, representing the revolving tides of raw emotional expression. GRÜN WASSER’s use of textural samples gives an environmental context, enhancing the composition and revealing influences from hip-hop, house and industrial music. It's been two years since GusGus graced us with their enigmatic Kompakt debut "24/7". This album was return to form for the trio, earning much acclaim and fanfare thanks to its conceptual rigidity and pure glamour. Conceived solely with the help of two precious Doepfer modular systems and Daniel August's all-pervasive vocals, it could have been easily characterized as Gus Gus' unofficial live album. If you had the chance to catch one of their many live shows on their exhaustive world-wide tour, you know what drive and emotion their show brought to the stage and crowd. Let’s fast forward to present day. The trio comprised of President Bongo, Biggi Veira and Daniel August felt the urge to reunite. They set up a makeshift studio in a summer cottage in the depths of the lava field. Secluded in silence and beauty they began working on their seventh studio album and have delivered "Arabian Horse" - a full length that brims with highlights showcasing GusGus’ versatility and stunning songwriting ability to creative levels that we feel is their greatest accomplishment in their 15+ year history. A vast array of illustrious guest musicians and singers abound on these powerful ten new songs. Most prominently, we welcome the long awaited return of former band member and gifted vocalist Ur?ur "Earth" Hákonardóttir who appears on the three songs “Be With Me”, “Arabian Horse” and “Over”. Hogni Elisson recently released a wonderful album with his band Hjaltalin and lends his voice to some of the album's most memorable and deepest moments. Samúel Jón Samúelsson contributes the elevating, goosebump-inducing string arrangements, Davd Thor Jonsson contributes accordion and the banjo. Even an un-named Gypsy combo leave their mark on "Arabian Horse"! Compared to GusGus’ stripped down predecessor for Kompakt, "Arabian Horse" is much more "in your face" – the songs brim with big gestures, enthralling hooks, pop and soul! GusGus have perfected the craft of balancing that fine line between commercial pop and underground dance music. But who needs compartmentalization when we're talking about music and emotion? Take the powerful schaffel (aka shuffle) anthem "Deep Inside" which makes use of big room chords you'd normally hear in more commercially tunes but balances that with a ferocious bass line and vocal duel that belongs to anyone. This sincerity in their music carries throughout “Arabian Horse”. Another prime example of this is the Högni fronted "Within You" – strings converge with his breathtaking vocals backed by a thoroughly addictive techno bass kick. It’s a fact that GusGus retrace their original influences and have created a dance pop album that equally resonates a forgotten period of early ‘90’s dance pop (think The Beloved), classic house music and urban soul a la Massive Attack. But make no mistake, "Arabian Horse" does not sound like pure retro in any way. From multi-instrumentalist, singer-songwriter, and producer Shinrizumu comes his long-awaited new song, Lady! Mellow grooves are infused with soulful basslines to create a colorful sound quite unlike anything we’ve ever seen from the young musician. MPB-like brass fanfare combines with a sense of urban romanticism to create a dramatic, yet understated sound; a testament to the diverse influences that Shinrizumu draws from.
