Nina Hagen, the most beautiful, and most strident, hell-raiser to toe the line between punk and pop, East and West and outta space that Germany has ever produced is finally back. On 09.12.2002 her new album UNITY will be released on Grönland Records. It is her first album since VOLKSBEAT in 2011. The time was more than ripe.

The 12 songs on UNITY take us on a wild journey through a densely woven musical jungle full of chirruping, buzzing and chittering. Country twang sung over spacey synth grooves and rock pop playing over dub and sexy slow funk. Some songs tell of biblical miracles, others are feisty political tirades, and then there are covers: a country classic, a Sheryl Crow hit and even a Bob Dylan song with German lyrics ("Die Antwort heißt ganz allein der Wind") – really something that only a larger-than-life songstress can dare to do. UNITY plays with a multifaceted mélange of textures, samples and everyday sounds. Amidst this rich foliage of sounds and themes there is, of course, that voice; in the wink of an eye it transitions from operatic to demonic, hitting insane high notes then plummeting to awe-inspiring deep bellows, as if she is trying to interfuse the sexes. Nina Hagen screams and hisses, belts out lyrics and performs recitatives, rasps and reverberates in electronic distortions. She launches into musical dialogues and soliloquys. It is as if her voice is echoing into our time from another world.

In short, UNITY is a piercing, warm-hearted and varied Nina Hagen spectacle. She is as prolific at 67 as she has ever been.

The Trend is high explosive, hyperactive teenage powerpop. The Trend hailed from Kennett, Missouri and was formed back in 1979. Aged fifteen to sixteen at the time, and armed with guitars, striped t-shirts, skinny ties, tambourines and colorful drainpipe trousers. The Trend (Is In) was a full on powerpop and bubblegum-explosion.

One self-released (and nowadays mega-rare) album in 1982 and a just-as-hard-to-find 7-inch single from the previous year was all that The Trend unleashed on record during their short lifespan. Since then, appearances on compilations like Yellow Pills and Numero’s Buttons have made sure The Trend is in high demand amongst powerpop aficionados all over the world.

Trend’s debut 45 “She’s Hi-Fi” b/w “Lucky Day” is blistering class AAA powerpop that will most likely make anyone with the slightest interest in the genre strip off all clothes and do the helicopter. “The Girl At The Holiday In” shows that The Trend had moved on since the single. So much so that “The Girl I Used To Know” could have been recorded by one of the then contemporary Paisley Underground bands from Los Angeles. “Real Cheap Thrill” is raging Merseybeat-pop-mayhem bordering to killed by death-punk. “Two Plus Two” is suffused with the spirit of late 1960s Paul McCartney. Above all, The Trend is about direct, driving upbeat pop. “Go For Broke” could have clicked as a single, while “Southsiders (Waiting To Go Northside)” caught The Trend’s outlook in a nutshell: “power pop, bubblegum, punk rock, here we come.”

Housed in a deluxe gatefold sleeve that comes with a printed inner sleeve richly illustrated with rare and previously unpublished photos. In the extensive liner notes The Trend’s main man and song writer John McMullan tells the full story to Kieron Tyler (Mojo Magazine).

The Loch Ness Mouse celebrate 30 years as a band and release a new album to coincide with the anniversary. Album III completes the trilogy that began with the self-titled record from 2016 and was followed up by II in 2019 (both also released on the well-respected Japanese label P-Vine). Where the first was the tight and elaborate pop record, the next one more moody and atmospheric, the new record is possibly a bit more extreme, free-spirited and cheerful. Together, the trilogy nevertheless gives a coherent picture of what has been the band's project for the past ten years: melodic and sophisticated pop from a working-class perspective, with strong elements of soul and jazz, based on the songwriting of the brothers Jørn and Ole Johannes Åleskjær. The new album features, among others, ex-member Hilma Nikolaisen and jazz/contemporary names such as Morten Barrikmo (Trondheim Jazz Orchestra, Oslo Sinfonietta) and Lars Tormod Jenset (Espen Eriksen Trio).

The new record by Tropa Macaca brings together two pieces, Animais Sintéticos and Aerossol, which were previously presented in an exhibition context, at gnration in Braga and at Pada in Barreiro, in the years 2022 and 2020, respectively. Both exhibitions, which took the title of the pieces, presented themselves as immersive installations that allied music to Joana da Conceição's paintings and videos. These two exhibitions are different pacts between the audible and the visible, and of both with the world.

Here are the texts that accompanied the exhibitions, as well as links to visual report. Animais Sintéticos, gnration, Braga, 2022 The exhibition Animais Sintéticos exists like a landscape, the kind we remember when we are not there, alive, but suspended inside us. Enigmatic for us who created them, they accompany us, and if we imagine that one day they had a beginning, an original referent outside of us, the time they have already spent with us forces us to doubt that this is so. Time has uprooted them, torn them from that place. We look closer, we reflect, we examine, we meditate, and when, as in a quantum leap, we originate what becomes there, we believe that it has always been there, that we have crossed the glass, that we have come close to the mystery. It is a landscape like this that is offered in this exhibition. One of those that say more about us than about the world, at a time when we already know what we already felt, that we are not the world. An exercise in quantum paleontology, where the painting, the music, and the moving image are echoes of this place we inhabit, between promise and ruin. A confrontation, in the form of an elegy, in search of reconciliation.

The self named LP marked the fifth album and end of the first incarnation of Bourbonese Qualk. Julian Gilbert left the group after ‘The Spike'(1986) to concentrate on writing and theatre, leaving Steven Tanza and Simon Crab who parted ways after touring in Europe in early 1986 and recording this album. Steven Tanza went on to found the group ‘The State’ and while Crab continued as Bourbonese Qualk (with the new line-up of Miles Miles,Crab and Owen If), dissolved the Recloose Organisation label and founded ‘New International’ as the outlet for future Bourbonese Qualk and Recloose Org releases.

"If we were awarding prizes for making people rush out of the room in blind panic Bourbonese Qualk would have a trophy cabinet to match Bayern Munich’s. Strange, because whilst some of their music is damned uncomfortable listening, an equal part is pleasantly ambient. Pretty, even. Bourbonese Qualk were an experimental music group from England, active from 1979 through 2003. They were always obsessively and uncompromisingly focused on controlling their work: they ran their own record label, recording studio, tour organization, and music venue (the notorious Ambulance Station). They refused to integrate into the commercial music racket and turned down publishing deals from major labels, stubbornly opting for total independence.

They're also known for their political activism, formed in the crucible of 1980s Britain amid such influences as the UK miners' strike, The Falklands War, Thatcherism, monetarism, local government corruption, squatting, anti-capitalism, anti-fascism, and anarchism. Their work was often ambiguous and directly critical of cynical power-politics of any color, often irritating members of the traditional organized left. In 1984 Bourbonese Qualk occupied a large empty building - The Ambulance Station - on the Old Kent Road in South London, which they turned into a base for their activities, a cooperative space for artists, musicians, and writers, and a center for radical political activism -- specifically as a coordinating center for the Stop the City anti-capitalist riots of 1984.

This is music as much for then and today, a radical, revolutionary cultural force that acts as a positive social charge.

Formed in Los Angeles in 1965, The West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band was considered by many to be Calfornia's answer to the Velvet Underground. The group created psych/rock music that was both fragile and dreamy. 'Part One' (the band's second LP!) was originally released in 1967 on Frank Sinatra's Reprise Records. Though band leader Bob Markley and his companions didn't achieve the fame or notoriety of other bands from the area, they have nonetheless achieved cult status among collectors. Dean Honer and Kevin Pearce present a beautifully designed original soundtrack of songs taken from a science show for children and adults alike. Dean Honer is a Sheffield based musician, producer and founding member of many iconic electronic music bands including The All Seeing I, I Monster, The Moonlandingz and The Eccentronic Research Council. He has worked as a producer for bands such as The Human League, Add N to X and Roisin Murphy. Kevin Pearce is a songwriter from Essex. He has received plaudits for his work from The Independent, The Guardian and Mojo magazine. His music has been used on HBO programmes in the USA as well as BBC TV shows in the UK. Castles in Space is proud to present The Sound of Science. Dean explains the background and inspiration for the album: “The idea for The Sound of Science had been in my head for a number of years. “Being a parent of young kids I endured a lot of very cliched and awful children's songs that were attempting to combine education and entertainment. These quickly became a form of torture to me, something that the CIA might use in covert operations to flush out a drug cartel from their hideout. It became apparent that there was a desperate need for informative songs and music that were appealing and bearable for both children and their parents. “I recruited my friend Kevin Pearce, (who I have produced and collaborated with on various projects over the years), to bounce ideas off and who could put together a nice series of chords and could sing! Which helps when writing songs. Kevin is from an acoustic folk background and I'm more of a one finger synth player in the Human League tradition. I thought it would be interesting to mix the folk and electronic element together for children’s songs. Something that harks back to both the BBC Radiophonic Workshop in the 60's and 70's and also the folk songs of TV programmes like Play Away, public information films and music from various weird and oddball kids TV from that era.

Technically Dusty’s seventh studio album, See All Her Faces is a collection of tracks from the late 1960s and early 1970s, and released on the Philips label in 1972.
