LeSale is back with the Synchronized EP, which marks his fifth solo EP on Luv Shack Records. The brainchild of Steve Haney (Jungle Fire) and Tim Felten (Sure Fire Soul Ensemble), the band explores new sonic territory for both of them. Aided by master musicians JakeNajor and Omar Lopez (SFSE) and Michael Duffy and Pat Bailey(Jungle Fire) they have truly crafted a unique sound within the diaspora of modern funk music. The B side "Countdown Dub" is a synth and sub-bass heavy dub exploration into what is possible within the style. Did they go too far? With some dubbing help from Seiji Komo (Boostive), the tune is a bold mixture of experimental and classic dub stylings.

For number 90 in the Brazil45 series, we share a couple of lesser-known discoveries that have become recent favourites here at Bongo HQ.

First up we head to the north of Brazil with funky Forró / boogie hybrid monster, 'Vendedor De Mangaios' by Josan. Originally released in 1981 on the album 'Rio De Renovações’ on Copacabana Records. This addictive dancefloor gem is still relatively under the radar, but it has become a firm favourite at Bristol's Worm Disco Club parties and amongst the DJ's and collectors of Brazil's underground dance music scene.

Taken from the illustrious singer Bartô Galeno's self-titled 1977 album on Tapecar Records, 'Vou Tirar Você Daqui' is an unusual one. Not easily pigeon-holed, the song sits somewhere between MPB / funk and rock, yet isn't really any of them. Backed with a big orchestrated sound and tripped-out synths, the track has a truly unique feel.

We hope you dig these finds. Another testament to the diversity and depth of Brazil's rich musical heritage.

Lloyd Altamont Thomas Robinson recorded many songs as a singer first for Studio One in 1963 and later for many labels and Jamaican producers including Duke Reid, Lloyd Daley, Sir JJ and more. Robinson was part of the duo Lloyd and Devon, whom had quite a few good songs under their belt including a hit for Derrick Morgan's Hop label, "Red Bum Ball.". With Glen Brown, under the name Lloyd & Glen, he wrote and recorded many outstanding Rocksteady & early Reggae tracks, some quite heavily influenced by black Soul including the two sublime tracks featured here. He went on to record the big dancehall hit “Cuss Cuss” in 1984 on the Harry J. label. He died in 2013 in the Kingston Public Hospital. He was 68 years old. Glenmore Lloyd Brown, began his career as a vocalist in Sonny Bradshaw’s jazz group before recording duets with Hopeton Lewis, Dave Barker, and Lloyd Robinson. Later, Brown became the founder and owner of the Reggae/Dub labels Pantomine and South East Music. A sought after producer he worked with many with many Reggae greats including U Roy, Gregory Isaacs, Big Youth, I-Roy, Prince Jazzbo, Johnny Clarke, Lloyd Parks, and Little Roy. The heavy rhythms of his Dub productions resulted in his being known as "The rhythm master". He died at the Far Rockaway Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing in New York City on 4 October 2019, at the age of 75. As “Lloyd & Glen”, they composed, sang and recorded together about 15 tracks, ranging from Ska to Rocksteady to Soul on a variety of labels between 1966 and 1968. Most of these songs are outstanding, many are just sublime with a strong American Soul influence. In the late 50s & 60s, Jamaica was Rhythm & Blues/Soul crazy. Many Jamaican artists regularly performed and recorded tracks in these styles along with Rocksteady and Reggay. Very few though could do it as well Lloyd & Glen...

This next Toy Tonics EP takes one more step into a futuristic sound that connects Broken Beat, House & Neo Soul. The EP was produced by Fényan. France based dancer and producer (originally from Martinique) who hooked up with Kosmo Kint. Soul singer raised in New York and since one year part of The Toy Tonics crew in Berlin. Fenyan & Kosmo Kint met shortly after Kosmo Kint’s first release on Toy Tonics (the „Get lost“ EP with french producer Mangabey). Together they created three magic sparkling pieces of music. A unique sound inspired by the UK Jazz sound and the broken beat scene. A great further step in the evolution of uptempo Neo Soul dancemusic. Fényan’s rhythms are special. The groove is unique. This music makes you dance differently. No wonder as Fenyan (his real name is Kwame) is a professional dancer. He is travelling around the world teaching dancing with his own dance company and is a judge on international dance battles. Besides dancing he has ben producing beats since the age of 19 on his MPC. Influencd by the great names of deep jazz and fusion, but also inspired by the music from his origin Martinqiue: Zouk, Biguine, Bélè… you can feel this in the programming of his beats. Besides the MPC Fenyan tried many instruments, but mainly it’s the keybaords and the trumpet what he feels well with intuitivly. Kosmo Kint lives in Berlin since three years. He came from NYC where he was singing in Soul bands, hanging out with musicians and also writing songs for other artists. he is one of the many artists that moved from the big apple to Berlin recently. Chicago soul girl group the Opals released three exquisite singles on the Okeh label between January 1964 and February 1965, all of them produced by Carl Davis, in addition to which they also recorded background vocals for other artists. When Tony Rounce compiled Kent’s CD of Billy Butler’s Okeh recordings in 2007, unexpectedly found on the master tape transfer of Billy’s ‘Right Track’ were two unidentified female tracks we eventually ascertained were by the Opals.

The uptempo ‘Can’t Give It Up’ is taken at a perfect dance beat for Northern Soul discos. It was written by Billy Butler and Gerald Sims, and likely recorded around the time of the ‘Right Track’ session in 1966. On the flip is the beautiful, mid-tempo ‘End My Suffering’, which bears a resemblance to Marvin Smith’s ‘Time Stopped’, also from 1966 and produced by Carl Davis. This is the first release for both tracks and will appeal to fans of many genres of vintage soul music. track listing

Here's a funky introduction to the two man band Duoya from Sweden. Butter is their debut release, a three tracks EP containing two songs from the upcoming album and one exclusive. As they are perfecting their debut full length album we thought to introduce the project to you with this super limited 7" vinyl to mark the day.

Duoya is the funky brainchild of Gustav Horneij and Dimitrios Karatzios. The two met through a shared obsession with jazz vinyls and later started jamming, eventually forming Organic Pulse Ensemble together. While the project in time would turn into Gustav's one man venture, their creative chemistry was still there when they decided to start sending recordings and song sketches back and forth during the spring of 2020. Which in turn was the beginning of a new musical journey.

Harboring the creativity of both artists, Dimitri being an illustrator as well as a musician and Gustav being a multi-instrumentalist and a song writer. When they get together only good things happen. Specially while jamming, they express themselves freely and come up with crazy groovy music that everyone loves to vibe on.

In expectation for the amazing upcoming album that is in the works, Butter turned out to be the perfect appetizer to get in the mood and discover this brand new project with the complicity of Urban Waves Records.

For volume 86 in the Brazil45 series, we return with a pair of stellar 1970s Brazilian-Funk / Black Rio nuggets by two of the greats of the genre, Toni Tornado & Zeca Do Trombone. 'Sou Negro' (I'm Black) is taken from Toni Tornado's (aka Antônio Viana Gomes) sought after 1970 four-track compacto EP on Odeon Records. Already having had some experience in show business as a dancer in the 1960s, Toni started his musical career in 1970 and adopted the stage name 'Toni Tornado'. The influence of James Brown flowed through his music, with Toni becoming one of the first Brazilian artists (alongside Tim Maia) to introduce the soul and funk sound into Brazilian music. Together with other contemporary musicians and bands such as Banda Black Rio, Gerson King Combo and Cassiano, this new sound led to DJ's throwing soul parties. This unique Brazilian take on soul and funk (and later on disco) became coined as 'Black Rio'. A movement that celebrated pride in its Black identity and consciousness. Zeca Do Trombone has an impressive repertoire which has seen him releasing a handful of solo albums and working with some of the greats of Brazilian music, such as Tim Maia, Ivan Lins, Joyce, and Luis Vagner. The track 'Coluna Do Meio' is taken from his 1976 collaboration project 'Zé Do Trombone E Roberto Sax' with saxophonist Roberto Sax, which additionally features the heavyweight Wilson das Neves on percussion. This catchy Wah-Wah guitar-led dancer has become a favourite with DJ's over the years and will continue to be championed for years to come.

Not many cities in the world are gifted with a timeless anthem of their own. We all know “New York, New York”, a song widely known across its city borders. For many Vietnamese, the beautiful Cha Cha Cha tune “Sài Gòn” has a similar reputation. The tune was written by Hanoi-born composer Y-Van. Like many of his generation, he moved to the South in 1954 after The Geneva Accords partitioned Vietnam temporarily into two states. There he became one of the most famous and prolifc songwriters in South Vietnamese pop music. His revered songs are still sung and covered to this day. “Sài Gòn”, which he wrote in 1965, was recorded for the frst time by Saigonese-born singer Trúc Mai for the Sóng Nhạc label. It is one of his most iconic compositions and has been recorded countless times since. Trúc Mai rose to prominence during the late 1950s as a popular headliner in the cabaret circuit of Saigon, earning her the title, "Nữ Hoàng Mambo" (the Queen of the Mambo). Her reputation helped make the 1965 recording of “Sai Gon” an instant hit. It was so successful that it was one of only a few songs to appear on multiple 7” vinyl releases. However, that same year, Trúc Mai took a seven-year hiatus from the music industry to take care of her family. But she returned in 1972 to record “Sai Gon” again, this time with another producer, Duy Khánh – also a successful singer and musician. They released this track on his “reel 2 reel” tape series, “Cỏ May”. After the war ended in 1975, Trúc Mai and her family left Vietnam to begin their new lives in the United States, where she continued her successful music career with the overseas community.The Sài Gòn sung about in the song refers geographically to today's Districts 1 & 3 in Ho Chi Minh City, the name given in 1975, after reunifcation. But colloquially, the city is still afectionately called Sài Gòn by many of its residents, and even the airport retains the ‘sgn’ designation as its abbreviation. Despite being recorded over 55 years ago, the unbroken popularity of this life-afrming ode to the city is proven when, whether in Sài Gòn or Hanoi; the south or north; whether young or old, when the song plays, everyone immediately joins in to sing along to the chorus…Saigon đẹp lắm Saigon ơi! Saigon ơi! (Saigon is so beautiful! Saigon oi! Saigon oi!) The two extensively restored mixes are supplemented with a 2021 edit by Saigon Supersound producer and DJ Jan Hagenkötter, who tries to preserve the vibes of the original and at the same time to wrap it in a contemporary garment.

In the mid 1960s Eddie Buster got involved in recordings for the local Chicago-based M&M label which was run by saxophonist Tommy "Madman" Jones. M&M released dozens of 45rpm singles, one of those being "Churn The Butter" b/w "Kitchen Cookin'" by the Eddie Buster Band with vocalist Jr. Robinson. It is quite difficult to find the original 45rpm single in clean condition so this fantastic sounding reissue is certainly worth it to purchase.

Pique-nique Recordings is proud to present 'Investigate and Enjoy', a deep musical conversation between two of New York City’s most prolific musicians, Dave Harrington and Kenny Wollesen. Harrington (Darkside) and Wollesen (Sex Mob) use a shared language of texture, groove, and space to craft intricate, free-formed, and inventive experimental music. Wollesen’s forceful percussion opens up side A, which grooves heavily underneath Harrington’s skittering electronics. The flip side features sparse yet rich guitar tones on what Harrington and Wollesen refer to as an “improvised ballad.” Both pieces resonate with a powerful mood as hints of late-Talk Talk and Battles permeate these unique recordings. This release is part of an ongoing series that aims to capture the New York City jazz scene in its current, always evolving form. "Of all of the things we've done together over the years, playing as a duo has been one of the most special to me. We never rehearse, we never play any songs, but Kenny and I find ourselves writing music together in real-time. Kenny is the rare drummer who has the ability to not only supply a sort of canvas for another musician to work inside of and to paint harmonically on, but he can make the frame around it, and he can splatter paint himself in a meaningful way that has the power to change the whole shape of the shared dream of an improvisation. R&B lovers will need no introduction to either Roy Brown’s ‘Boogie At Midnight’ or Lloyd Price’s ‘Lawdy Miss Clawdy’, but these recently discovered ‘Take One’s put whole new perspectives on two proven classics. The fast and furious ‘Boogie’ makes the issued 1951 master sound like a lullaby in comparison, while ‘Clawdy’ has an alternate opening line that would have guaranteed no airplay would have been forthcoming back in 1952.

Both tracks are taken from new transfers of the original acetate and tape sources, and both play loud and proud. Each side of the 45 offers a representation of the original label design that would have been used, had they been issued at the time of recording.

No self-respecting R&B singles collector will want to be without a copy of this essential commemorative single, featuring two of the greatest names in 1950s black American music.

First up is the addictive, building groove of 'Curumin Chama Cunhãtã Que Eu Vou Contar (Todo Dia Era Dia De Índio)’. Taken from the 'Dádiva' album from 1981, and originally released on Som Livre Records. A homage to the indigenous people and tribes of Brazil. The flip features one of Jorge's most beloved Brazilian-Boogie joints, 'Rio Babilônia’, which celebrates life in Rio, partying, the beach, and the city’s iconic monuments. The song was originally released on a compacto and taken from the 'Dádiva' album from 1983, it features arrangements by the late-great, Lincoln Olivetti.

In the early 1970s, the funk / soul band Power Of Attorney was formed at the Pennsylvania State Correctional Institution at Graterford (30 miles northwest of Philadelphia). The story of their formation is just as powerful as the music that they left behind. In late 1972, the prison’s Activities Director Theodore “Ted” Wing broke ground on a new recording studio. As part of the rehabilitative arts and music initiative, the space was built to offer a creative outlet for incarcerated individuals to express their musical talents. In November of ‘72, an audition was held throughout the prison to form a band. It has been reported that over 1,600 men auditioned for a spot in the band. Wing ultimately settled on a lineup that consisted of William Smith (lead guitar), Charles McDowell (bass), Merion Wilson (tenor saxophone), Edward J.X. Smith (guitar), and Otis Graham (drums). With a lineup of gifted musicians and a fresh new recording studio to practice and lay down tracks in, the band Power Of Attorney was officially born. In January of 1973, Power of Attorney got the chance to record at Sigma Sound Studios, the legendary space that helped birth the Philadelphia International sound as well as classic albums like David Bowie's Young Americans. Taking the routines that they had rehearsed for a reported five hours each day, the band laid down the tracks — including the reflective “Changing Man,” an original composition by McDowell. “It tells the story of a man who made a mistake, and after a while in jail, he gets his head together, and realizes it’s time to straighten it out,” the 21-year-old serving life for murder told The Philadelphia Daily News upon the single’s release. The 7-inch single was released on the Nicetown label in 1973. Sold directly from the prison activities office, 500 copies were originally made. After more practicing and recording, one year later James Brown & Polydor Records offered The Power Of Attorney’s lone full-length, 1974’s From The Inside… Between 1973 and 1975 the band played 400+ concerts outside of the prison walls. Even opening for Stevie Wonder at Lincoln University and also making a live appearance on the Mike Douglas show. Forward to 2020 – While digging through the Sigma tape archives at Drexel University, Brewerytown Beats owner Max Ochester – known for deep-dive Philly reissues by The Thompsons and Sounds Of Liberation – noticed two tapes, with only “P.O.A.” scribbled on the spines. Upon further inspection, it was discovered that these 2-inch multi-reels contained six songs, four of them previously unreleased, all from 1973. The full original studio tapes for Power Of Attorney’s “Changing Man” sessions had been found, 47 years later. Expertly mixed and remastered from the original reels, Power Of Attorney’s Changing Man (out now on Brewerytown Records) is a document of the joy and pain of a handful of men trying to make the best of an impossible situation. The bittersweet love ballad “I’m Just your Clown” is featured on the flip. The reissued single is available now on Brewerytown Records on vinyl and streaming platforms. The label will follow this up with the vinyl and streaming release of all 6 songs found on that long-lost Sigma tape, on vinyl & CD in late 2020.

Released in 1980 Charles Johnson's "Baby I Cried, Cried, Cried / Never Had A Love So Good" is a formidable double-sider, the A-side is a sweet slow jam where Charles lays it on the line in true grown man's fashion over a slick backdrop that is not a million miles away from some Philly style loving. The B-side is the big one though, a proper modern dancer, lovely production and the band is fully in the pocket. Drop this one and watch the dance light up, real music for the dancefloor! This particular 45 has long been a collectors item, and on a good day it can fetch hundreds on the Soul scene. This is a fully legit reissue, and features the classic golden Alston label artwork. A truly beautiful record, with each side primed to be played at the right time. Don't sleep!
