Is it a celebration? A reappropriation? A revolution? Symo Reyn has perfectly mastered the qanun, a 78-string zither invented by the Persian philosopher and musician Al Farabi circa 872. A virtuoso, Symo Reyn reinvents this instrument in his work, even revolutionizing it. And how can the sound produced by the only polyphonic instrument in oriental music, the qanun, be approached anew? A new language needs to be conceived for it. its vocabulary needs to be enriched. This process also requires the instrument itself to be transformed: a special sensor manufactured by Symo Reyn himself is attached to the bridge at four points (bass, midrange, treble). It captures the sound waves and converts them into magnetic signals that run through electric wires. A dozen or so pedals control the whole device. This qanun is modified, transfigured. Both on his own and multiplied, Symo Reyn experiments, invents new sound combinations to create a subtle musical tapestry, a tense ow of calm, refined, distended notes. There is a lot of tension in this music that draws from several sources (Henry Purcell, Michael Nyman, Steve Reich, Nils Frahm, Brian Eno, Björk) to be able to tread its own path. It’s quite organic, giving structure to its chaos. Beautiful in its gesture, with rhythmic precision and melodic richness, Symo Reyn’s music is precisely composed and spontaneous, deep and luminous, dense and clear, intense and intimate, delicate and mysterious, unique and familiar. Electric Telepathy Vol. 2 is the latest installment from legendary multi-instrumentalist Daniel Carter (tenor sax, soprano sax, trumpet, flute) together with Patrick Holmes (clarinet), Matthew Putman (keyboard), Hilliard Greene (bass) & Federico Ughi (drums), also known as the Telepathic Band. This new LP follows their previous albums Telepathic Alliances, Telepatia Liquida, and Electric Telepathy, Vol. 1, and Telepathic Mysteries, Vol. 1, further exploring in-the-moment themes and landscapes. On Electric Telepathy the band used material from a recording session in which they improvised, then went to recreate the album in the studio’s cutting-room floor. In the 1970s, Betty Davis defied genre and gender by pushing her voice to extremes and embracing the erotic. She articulated a kind of pre-punk, funk-blues fusion that had yet to be normalized in mainstream music - a style that few musicians have come close to replicating. As one of the first Black women to write, arrange, and produce her own albums, Betty was a visionary who disregarded industry boundaries and constraints. Raw, unapologetic and in full control, Betty paved the way for generations of future artists who said “funk you” to the music industry and social norms. In 1979, when Davis entered an L.A. studio to record her fifth and final album, she was reeling from a series of setbacks. Three years earlier, after recording her fourth album, Is It Love Or Desire, Davis was dropped from her label and the LP was subsequently shelved. In 1978, her beloved band Funk House went their separate ways. Looking for a fresh start, Davis relocated to Hollywood to focus on songwriting. Before long, British manager Simon Lait (Toni Basil), offered to fund her next project. With renewed vigor, Davis reunited with former Funk House guitarist Carlos Morales and brought together industry veterans like fusion drummer Alphonse Mouzon and session bassist Chuck Rainey. Old friends Anita and Bonnie Pointer (The Pointer Sisters) and Patryce “Choc’let” Banks joined Davis on vocals, as did Motown legend Martha Reeves. The resulting album, Crashin’ From Passion, was her most musically diverse, blending elements of reggae and calypso (“I’ve Danced Before”), jazz (“Hangin’ Out in Hollywood,” “Tell Me a Few Things”), dark synth-pop (“She’s a Woman”), and even disco (“All I Do Is Think of You”). Equally exploratory are Davis’ vocals, as she trades in her signature sass and snarls for more nuanced stylings. Among the album’s few funk tracks is “Quintessence of Hip,” in which Davis hails musicians like Bob Dylan, Billie Holiday, Stevie Wonder, and John Coltrane, while deftly integrating elements of their work. The song also offers a moment of stark vulnerability, as she sings, “Isn’t rich? Isn’t it queer? Losing my timing so late in my career.” It would prove to be a prophetic line in the months to follow. The mixing process was mired by artistic differences and then cut short, amid the death of Davis’ beloved father. Bereft and exasperated, Davis returned home for the funeral, setting into motion her retirement from the music industry. Crashin’ From Passion, meanwhile, would be shelved for 15 years and licensed for a CD-only release, without Davis’ consent, in the ‘90s. This 2023 edition of the album, made with Davis’ full approval and cooperation, marks its first official release and first time ever on vinyl. The package was designed by GRAMMY®-winning artist, Masaki Koike, while the album cover features an incredible shot of Betty captured in London in the mid-1970s by renowned photographer Kate Simon. Crashin’ From Passion was remastered by Dave Cooley at Elysian Masters and pressed on vinyl at Record Technology, Inc. (rti). The accompanying booklet includes a treasure trove of rare photos from the era, plus lyrics, and new liner notes by writer, ethnomusicologist, and Betty’s close friend, Danielle Maggio, who integrates interviews that she conducted with Davis, marking her last ever interviews.

Following the first compilation which focused on recordings from the Nippon Columbia catalog, this time we are digging into the King Records archives. It is almost impossible to capture the whole picture of Wa-Jazz in a couple of compilation albums since it is such a broad and deep genre, however, by extracting tracks from the Nippon Columbia and King Records collections - both labels having an extensive archive of jazz music - we may be able to glimpse a part of its allure and essence. This time again, I have made the music selection with this idea in mind. The music in this compilation was recorded between 1962 and 1985 and is a brief history of Japanese jazz on King Records. Yusuke Ogawa has been running the Universounds store in Tokyo since 2001, specializing in jazz and second-hand, rare, and collector records. The harmonizing trio was born in a classic New York story of friends who met on the road to music: the dance floors of downtown, the floorboards of the Lower East Side and the rooftops of Harlem. "Silver" was written and recorded live to tape earlier this year at Killion Sound Studio in North Hollywood and produced by Sergio Rios (of Orgone). While these analog recording techniques help anchor Say She She's sound in a foundation of sonic warmth that can only be achieved with tape, it's also their process of producing the track in the moment and capturing the magic of collaborative creativity that has led to their sound being described as "a glorious overload of joyous enthusiasm and spiritual uplift" (mojo) and "steeped in the quirky post-disco spirit of early 80s Nyc" (The Guardian). Silver, the element, is known as the metal of self-consciousness and the mirror of the soul. The 16-song double LP not only shows that the band has grown in confidence, but also reflects a deeper exploration of their punk-chic, female-fronted sensibility.

This compilation takes us on a journey to the Colombian coast where the passion for African music burns bright.It's impossible to understand this love affair without first looking to San Basilio de Palenque - the first free town in colonial Latin America, established in 1691 as a place of refuge and autonomy for black slaves. It's a place where pride in African heritage and culture could be kept alive, just 50 km away from Cartagena de Indias.
The Afro Caribbeans' connection to their roots gave rise to the "picós" - artisanal, high-powered sound systems akin to those found in Jamaica. These music aficionados have a keen ear for African melodies, leading to a vibrant collector's scene that brought Afro sounds to the streets of Barranquilla, Cartagena, and Santa Marta. This compilation showcases the best of Kenyan Benga music - a unique style with a distinct guitar-picking method that draws from traditional instruments like the nyatiti and orutu. Learn everything about the history and stories behind these African tracks, from the carefully guarded "exclusives" to the piconema - the practice of renaming songs in Spanish based on their lyrics or the reaction of the dancefloor.
The project has been led by Spanish vinyl collector Joan Pujol aka Golfo De Guinea surrounded by a team of passionate music lovers including Don Alirio, a musicologist from Barranquilla who offered a coastal perspective, and George Ouma, a Kenyan DJ, collector, and Benga advocate who helped with track selection and securing rights. The result is a compilation that captures the joy and energy of sub-Saharan polyrhythm, bringing together a vibrant mix of genres that are sure to move your feet. It's fair to say that what Ravi Shankar did for the sitar, Hamza el Din did for the oud (the short-necked Arabian lute): bringing a little-known instrument to the attention of the West and popularizing it. Indeed, he ended up playing oud with everybody from the Grateful Dead to the Kronos Quartet to his one-time roommate Sandy Bull. But El Din's gifts went beyond that of an oud virtuoso; he was also an accomplished singer and composer, and you will hear all of those talents on full display on this seminal album, released on Vanguard in 1965 soon after his star-making appearance at the 1964 Newport Folk Festival that attracted the attention of Bob Dylan and Joan Baez. The collaboration between Chicago funk band Southside Movement, who released a total of three albums between 1973 and 1975 on Wand and 20th Century Records, and female soul singer Jackie Ross, also based in Chicago and left many records for Chess and Brunswick.
