Songs like “Deep River” and “Every Time I Feel the Spirit” were well-known to any African American church-goer at the time and unknown by the white audiences. Interestingly, Witherspoon chose the popular Randy Van Horne Singers (theme songs to the Flintstones and the Jetsons cartoons) to sing backing vocals on ‘Feelin’ The Spirit’. Most famous was his version of Bessie Smith’s “Ain’t Nobody’s Business.” However, Witherspoon’s appearance at the 1959 Monterey Jazz Festival restarted his career and exposed him to a new generation of record-buying fans. ‘Feelin’ The Spirit’, released in 1959, hoped to capitalize on Witherspoon’s newfound popularity (particularly with white audiences) by bringing traditional African- American spirituals into the national arena.

"Noche de fiesta" (1975) was the first album that Julián Angulo and his combo recorded for Colombia's INS label. With arrangements and piano by Alfredo Linares, it's a thrilling LP sought after by collectors and DJs not only for its hard salsa and instrumental "descarga" tracks but also because of the funky dancefloor cuts `Enyere Kumbara' (covered by Quantic), `INS-Rock' and `Estoy soda' as well as the excellent original version of `Las caleñas son como las flores' (made famous later the same year by The Latin Brothers).Angulo described his sound as "Afroantillano", combining Cuban, New York Latin and Puerto Rican elements with Colombia's own tropical traditions. The combo featured the bandleader's funky, jazzy electric guitar, a hot rhythm section and the potent brass line-up of two saxophones and a trumpet.Presented in facsimile artwork and pressed on 180g vinyl.Part of a new Vampisoul reissue series of classic LPs from Colombia's INS label.Julián y su Combo was founded in 1962 by left-handed guitarist Julián Angulo Ponce, who was originally from Guapi, Cauca, Colombia and made his name in Cali and Buenaventura, signing initially with Bogotá's Sello Vergara in 1966. During a 20-year period Julián y su Combo released eight records (with several band name variations). Angulo was part of the first generation of artists from the Colombian Pacific who migrated to Bogotá in the 1970s, and his combo enjoyed popularity in his adopted city as well as in Medellín and Mexico. Ism opens audaciously with the spiritual mic-check "You Are Free To Choose," a track that features bassist Junius Paul alongside Vincent Davis (drums), Justin Dillard (piano), and Corey Wilkes (horns). This is by no accident. In many ways, "You Are Free To Choose" captures the spirit of Junius Paul's artistic roots. Corey, Justin, and Vincent were among the multigenerational cadre of Chicago musicians present when Junius chose to follow his own path of creative discovery at the storied Velvet Lounge on the South Side of the city in 2002. Though he began learning his craft playing in church, Junius's creative voice really developed during jam sessions at clubs like The Velvet alongside members of the AACM. It was iron sharpening iron, the most natural form of knowledge transfer. He explained The Velvet's vibe in 2018: "It's like in Africa.... If you had this society of diviners or medicine people, or you know, sages... The Velvet stuff is not secret; but there are certain aspects of it... if you weren't there, you weren't there." The Velvet Lounge closed in 2010. But, of course, the spirit of the Velvet Lounge is not dead. "Tune No. 6," recorded live at the Co-Prosperity Sphere in Chicago, is a sweet interlude here to remind us that jazz is alive, bristling with what's yet to come.

'Mantra Moderne' is a stunning, contemporary masterpiece that fuses Anatolian Psychedelia, Brazilian Tropicalia, 60’s European pop and American jazz. A must for fans of Khruangbin, Portishead, Arthur Verocai, Goat, Caetano Veloso, Tom Zé, Os Mutantes, Cortex and co.

The duo is formed of Kit Martin, who lives between London and France and plays all instruments on the album, and Merve Erdem, vocalist and multi-disciplinary artist from Istanbul, now based in London. This is their debut album.

The album explores universal themes such as love, loss, decay, language and ideology, mixing three different languages: English, Turkish and French. Written and recorded by the duo - Kit composed all the songs and Merve wrote the lyrics - in rural France during 2018, each song was completed within a 12-hour window, pawning contemplation for spontaneity.

Dubbed by Kit and Merve as ‘lo-fi-hi-fi’ in reference to the high-end tube equipment that helped it find its way to 8-track cassette tape. The style owes its sound to narrow tape width, valve distortion, spring reverb, the mixture of high end gear with lo-fi equipment as well as a disregard to the norms of hi-fi studio techniques. All instruments were analogue and no samples were used. The instruments that are used range from tablas to darbukas, balalaikas to ouds, MS20 synths to Farfisa organs and a lot of cuica. The mixing techniques were done on-the-fly, tracking immediately to tape: compression, EQ, delay and reverb; meaning mixing could not be revisited!

When growing up as a young teenager many dream of hitting the recording studio and getting that record deal.
The sheer musical drive inside you to lay down those raw and emotional feelings.
The chances of going to high end studios were slim and expensive. Opportunities were sparse to say the least.
So the next best thing was to go into one of the ever growing number of home studios that were popping up in the 1980's
Studios in peoples garages or in the spare bedroom.
And so we bring you to a small group of teenagers called Klimate.
They ventured into a un-named 8 track studio in Walsall around 1981 to record a series of 2 tracks.
There is little remembered about the group of lads from member Harbans Srih who played drums on both tracks and was in charge of writing duties. Harbans Srih was also the man behind sde 42 Sticks & Co "Jazz Dancin"/"Jazz funkin" .
The 5 piece band was very multicultural that really represented music in britain at the time. 3 of the players were of Afro-Caribbean decent giving us lead vocals, guitar, bass and keyboard. The 4th member was only known as a ginger haired youth (we like him!!) who was on saxophone duities.
shortly after these recordings tragedy struck Klimate and the bass player was killed in a car accident whilst on vacation in Italy.
fast forward 37 years and Harbans Srih discovers just a single D.A.T from that 1981 session.
We did our utmost to sonically get the recordings up to our very high standards at Super Disco Edits. Whilst we feel it perhaps just falls short, we couldn't ignore these recordings that optimises British youth culture and the heritage of Brit funk .
