This pairing was slated to be Event 218 in late 1974, but as no copies have emerged, it can be assumed that the single was pulled. It is hard to know why, but judging by its rarity the Anderson Brothers GSF release of ‘I Can See Him Loving You’ was a commercial failure - perhaps Event didn’t want to suffer a similar fate.

This reading of producer Ray Dahrouge’s song is more soulful and vital than the Anderson Brothers which was huge on the Northern Soul scene, but without this take for competition at the time.

Maybe the steamy finale to the Mayberry’s version was a bit too much for radio play, but surely the brilliance of the ballad A side would have compensated for that. Their loss; our gain.

Following up on the incredible success of El Michels & Black Thought's Glorious Game album the duo treat us to another 7" with two of the standouts from the album. The A Side "Hollow Way" is a testament to the chemistry between Leon & Thought. EMA uses his signature sound with a new approach pulling records from his collection and sampling them. The result is a gritty lo sonic backdrop that Black Thought exes his lyrical brillance on weaving a tune about guns and gun violence. The beat change at the end drives the point home, leaving any samples behind and lets the band remind people why they are one of the most in demand acts out there today. The B side "I'm Still Somehow" is a deeply introspective tune that Thought rhymes about vulnerability and overcoming challenges with heavy lines like"a happy black boy is like an alien" and "one crown, who was run down, somehow still standing tall". Michels again takes his ear and sensibility to the sampler, chopping up an old 45 that makes the perfect backdrop for this powerful and timeless song.

Betino's Records proudly presents its third release: an EP by the very sharp collective The Big Hustle. The band founded in 2014 by bass player and composer Sébastien Levanneur, brings together 70's old school funk with the hippest actual sound with influences spanning from Steely Dan to Snarky Puppy, from Mandrill to Lettuce and from Herbie Hancock (Manchild era) to Soulive. With mighty horn players, a rock and funky rhythm section, and percussions added to it, The Big Hustle’s music has a very large variety of sound landscapes. Still, the music never loses the groove and always stays close to the funk.
The A side opens with "Afrorever", a tribute to African culture and music. The guest of honor on this song is legendary Malian musician Cheick Tidiane Seck, longtime partner of Salif Keita, and collaborator of Joe Zawinul, Carlos Santana and Damon Albarn to name a few. After Cheick’s introduction, the songs jumps into a typical afrobeat vibe featuring a tight and powerful horn section, suddenly breaks into an electro funk groove and ends in a furious percussive party.
Second track on the A side is "Faure is the Magic Number". It is dedicated to Thomas Faure (co-composer of the track) and François Faure (both featured on this song on tenor sax and keyboards respectively). This piece displays the band’s ability to blend jazz-funk groove with a heavy hip-hop beat. Kind of DJ Premier meets Steely Dan.
The B side starts with "Afrorever (Sun's Up Mix)". Through this mix, one can acknowledge instantly Olivier Portal's touch. From the very first chords, he conveys us into his realm blending warm and melancholy keyboards with an old school deep-house rhythm pattern.
The fourth track is called “1, 2, 1, 2”. It is a purely improvised moment in the studio while the band was sound checking before recording with special guest rapper Raashan Ahmad. Nicolas Gueguen had the good idea to press the R button and what you hear is basically what happened afterwards.

Clydene Jackson’s 1975 debut LP for Ray Charles Crossover imprint failed to make much noise on its release. It is largely a smooth jazz-based album, half the tracks of which were written by Clydene. One track, in particular, broke the sophisticated music mould and was picked up by UK DJs on the Modern Soul scene.

‘I Need Your Love’ became popular in the UK and eventually Europe, leading to the track’s release on a single-sided 45 in 2001 That pressing did not satisfy demand however and the song’s popularity has continued to grow and grow. Kent are making it available with the excellent ‘We’re In Love’, another self-penned track from the same LP, on the flip.

The Royal Jesters were a household name in the 60s in San Antonio, TX. the 1960s. Formed by Henry Hernandez and Oscar Lawson, the group performed at school dances and downtown clubs and eventually leased and managed their own venue, the legendary Patio Andaluz. The group also started their own label, Jester Records, and recorded various singles, including a take on Vanilla Fudge's "Take Me For A Little While" with the towering Louie Escalante on lead. The group also recorded "We Go Together," a group harmony classic with 16 yr old Luvine Elias, Jr on a Lowrey organ. A must-have hot tortilla to keep in your bag.

After branching off from The Royal Jesters in the mid-'60s, Dimas Garza attempted a solo career and reinvented himself as Dimas III. Dimas recorded three singles on the Jesters' own Clown label - all tracked at Abie Epstein's studio off General McMullen in San Antonio, TX. The first was "So Funny" b/w "I Won't Love You Again," which are almost impossible-to-find records. Garza never did manage to break beyond the Bexar County limits but left a rich legacy of recordings behind for lowrider enthusiasts and obsessed collectors alike.

Miles Away Records are extremely proud to introduce our latest single by the incredible Howard Lemon Singers. You Are Somebody and For The Children are two blinding tracks cherry-picked from the incredibility rare 1977 album Seasons released on the legendary TK Records subsidiary Gospel Roots.
Both sides of this 45 are oozing with positivity and good sentiment, a fine example of the harmony between sacred and secular sounds, and the experimentation taking place, during the late 1970s as gospel artists were modernizing the soundtrack, and lyrical content of gospel music..
You Are Somebody is a gorgeous modern soul heater. Accomplished vocalist Esther Smith's sublime voice delivers her vocal lines with such confidence and assurance that the words seem to strut over the funky basslines and drumming support. Flip it over and For The Children is a more mid-tempo burner, but don't let this fool you - it's "stop-you-in-your-tracks" good. Smith's vocals once again shine brightly and are delightfully accompanied by the Nile Rodgers-esque 'wacka-wacka' guitar of Lester Snell throughout. Musicianship is of the highest quality as Howard Lemon, group leader, called upon some of the best musicians from Stax Records – Willie Hall and the aforementioned Lester Snell were key components of such groups as the Isaac Hayes Movement and the Bar Kays.
These two nuggets are presented here for the first time on a 45 and complete in our customary teal green labels and sleeve. Remastered and cut by Timmion.

Ty Karim is one of the finest Los Angeles singers to have never scored a hit in her own country. Her records are rightly lauded in Europe though and we present two of the best on her producer and partner’s Romark label in our Repro series. ‘Lighten Up Baby’ is a rare classic stomper from the heyday of Northern Soul. It was actually a one-off Car-A-Mel release in 1966 but it was recorded as part of Kent Harris’ Romark set-up.

‘All At Once’, on the other hand, is a moody mid-tempo number that has found favour with soul fans in recent years.

One of the most interesting young names within the Bergen and Norwegian jazz scene is saxophonist Aksel Røed. He’s playing with many different bands and constellations, including General Post Office and Dag Arnesen, and he is in high demand as a player. With Other Aspects, Aksel Røed has put together an 8-piece ensemble of his friends from different bands, and he draws on his inspirations from the old saxophone recordings of Ornette Coleman, Albert Ayler and Pharoah Sanders, but also in the composing mind of Django Bates and Charlie Haden’s Liberation Orchestra. As he explains himself: Other Aspects allows me to constantly drift into different directions and usually with short notice. The music is composed but not set, meaning it’s perfectly acceptable, and even encouraged to think and play outside the box. Most of the magic within the band lies in the free improvisation. Recorded in Duper Studio in Bergen, “Do You Dream in Colours?” is a massive piece of an album. And as a proper old jazz album, it comes with liner notes from the old Norwegian jazz veteran Knut Kristiansen.

Joe Buckner was lead singer of the Major IV, a Chicago group who recorded in Los Angeles in the late 60s. ‘I Wish I Knew’ had been issued by the Ballads on Venture in 1969 and that outfit later re-cut it as ‘Butterfly’ in 1975. Joe and the Majors give an equally impressive performance on this great Leon Ware/Susaye Greene song. ‘I Stand Blue’ is another Ware composition that we first featured by writer/producer Mickey Stevenson on the Kent 100 Club Anniversary single of 2019. Big-voiced Hal Frazier also gives a top performance on the excellent beat ballad.

Brian EL Dorado AND THE Tuesday People Release NEW Bombastic Single, Video AND 7 Inch Vinyl ON Choi Records

Tectonic is the latest offering from Melbourne local Brian El Dorado and his first release for 2022. A bombastic song reminiscent of early 2000’s break beats, Tectonic is criss-crossed with hypnotic distorted bass, a falsetto vocal and a touch of psychedelia.

In discussing the song’s origins El Dorado says he “distinctly heard the vocal melody while he was asleep one night and quickly put the idea into a Dictaphone at 6am the next morning.”

Tectonic is a co-production with Ivan "Choi" Khatchoyan (Cookin on Three Burners, The Traffic, Mayfield & Choi Records). Taking a break from live band recording, Brian and Choi have worked exclusively together on Tectonic with Brian playing almost all instruments (guitars, bass, synths and vocals) and Choi playing drums and taking the lead on production.

The pair, who originally met during hip hop open mic nights at The Evelyn Hotel (circa 2005) also bond over playing tennis nearly as much as music. They would talk about music and share ideas over the boom box post tennis matches.

The release of Tectonic is complete with a hilarious video from El Dorado’s long-time video collaborator Agostino Soldati. It will also be available on vinyl with a limited run of ‘45’s on Choi Records.

Dallas, Texas in 1982, during the hot summer months Roger Boykin, John Miller and Cassandra Wright were working as session musicians at Precision Audio studios. They were put together to create soundtracks, jingles and idents for US TV commercials and, in what spare studio time the three of them had, would experiment with the studio equipment at their disposal - writing and developing what would become the Savoir-Flair sound.

In these secret, after-hours sessions the three would create a staggeringly good private press 80s modern soul album. A flawless collection of tracks with every one of them hitting hard. It would be released on Roger's own label SoulTex Records with the group touring locally. Alas though, this was to be their only album as Savoir-Flair disbanded a year later. The impact this album had however can still be felt today with the 45 and LP becoming highly sought after amongst modern soul collectors around the world.

A Sade-inspired take on Hawaiian music, Kainani Kahaunaele’s “He Lei Aloha No Mī Nei” melds the beauty of the Hawaiian language with a heavenly R&B groove.

Reminiscent of Nohelani Cypriano’s “Lihue” — the 1979 cult classic that expanded the sound of Hawai‘i with its unexpectedly funky, tropical flavor — “He Lei Aloha No Mī Nei” charges forward into the 21st century with the same spirit. Kainani’s gentle voice and lyrics float across shimmering vocal arrangements and soft touches of piano, accompanied by tasteful drum programming, acoustic guitars swaying like palms against the calming warmth of the bass line.

Known throughout Hawai‘i as one of the archipelago’s greatest advocates of the native Hawaiian language, 'Ōlelo Hawai’i, the singer, songwriter and educator finds music is one of her best methods for perpetuating the language. “I have to be the example that Hawaiian is a living language that you can apply in all facets of your life,” she told the University of Hawai‘i at Hilo in a 2021 interview.

As the closing track on her award-winning album, Waipunalei, “He Lei Aloha No Mī Nei” stands out from the rest of the album with its modern R&B style. Instead of composing in a familiar “cha-lang-a-lang” style, Kainani and her collaborators deliberately placed the song, or mele, outside the box of what might typically considered “Hawaiian music”. For Kainani, mele is rooted in the lyrics, which come from a Hawaiian worldview. “To me, that’s the most important part. And when that part is set, there really is no limit to what kind of music you can put around it to support the mele.”With “He Lei Aloha No Mī Nei”, she achieves that with a shining example for generations past and present to carry the Hawaiian language into the future.

Pressed to 7-inch vinyl and housed in a full color jacket with full color labels. The B-side of this release offers the instrumental version as a mahalo, or thank you, to the talents and strengths of Kainani’s collaborators, Shawn Kekoa Pimental, Michael Grande, and Kale Chang.

The austrian musician and Live-Act / DJ Lukas Poellauer has been establishing a distinct production style with recent releases and remixes on Luv Shack Records, Fine Coincidence, Fortunea Records and Schönbrunner Perlen, melting classic house with airy, catchy melodies and mature songwriting.

“I Don’t Care” is the name of his first single for an upcoming release on Luv Shack Records and features the austrian funk Band Mary Jane´s Soundgarden and the piano player Valentin Zopp. The vastly featured musical talent of the Band makes the track oscillate between tight, club ready production and earthy, live-jazz café vibes, with the hazy voice of singer Tanja Peinsipp at its core.

For his second track Lukas Poellauer teams up with legendary singer Hubert Tubbs of "Tower of Power" fame. Tubb´s remarkable vocal timbre perfectly contrasts the light footed instrumental, as he sings about "When A Groove Is In Control". The actual groove itself is reduced and rather laid back, but Lukas Poellauer manages to bring in both dramatic and quirky overtones with a plethora of mallet, brass and string melodies.

On the flip, Patrick Pulsinger & Sam Irl deliver a fabulous dub rendition of “I Don’t Care” with a mad wobble bassline and classic reggae stabs, sitting comfortably between Grace Jones’ electronic tango and the hazy studio wizardry of dub emperor Lee Perry.

Luv Shack´s very own Space Echo put their spin on “When A Groove Is In Control”, opting for a cold and eerie vibe with the help of digital bell pads and a tight, stripped down four to the floor groove.

Rounding off the package, we have the Pulsinger & Irl Dub Instrumental which really makes the fantastic arrangement and mix shine even more.

Joe Tatton, keyboard player with Uk/us funk/soul jazz kings The New Mastersounds, releases this new 7 inch single in March 2022 and this time there is a lovely double A-side 7" physical vinyl option. Two tracks that showcase Joe's skills as a pianist and vocalist and confirm his talent for writing quality original compositions.
"Timeline" is Joe's spotlight on today's social media obsessed society delivered in the style of his musical hero Mose Allison. The latter was the legendary Mississippi born/New York based jazz/blues musician and singer whose wry and intelligent lyrics married to amazing original music shone a light on society and the world from the mid-1950s until his death in 2015. Mose was a huge influence on musicians like Georgie Fame, Van Morrison and Ben Sidran and was and still is one of Joe Tatton's favourite musicians of all time. This song is the title track for Joe's debut solo album due for release later this year on Rodina Music.
"Stomp" is a slow bluesy instrumental funk burner that has a New Orleans swagger about it and features Joe's grand piano solo followed by JTQ band member Gareth Lockrane cutting loose on the flute. If you like music by Allen Toussaint, Ramsay Lewis and Herbie Mann, you'll be feeling this one.
Joe Tatton has been a member of The New Mastersounds now for 16 years now and has recorded over a dozen albums and many singles with them playing organ, piano and keyboard. Annually, he tours 8-9 months a year with the band, mainly in the USA but also across Europe and Japan too. Prior to joining The New Mastersounds, Joe held down the keyboard role with UK jazz-funk kings The Haggis Horns appearing on their first two albums "Hot Damn!" and "Keep On Movin". He's also featured on piano/keyboards on the worldwide hit single "Put Your Records On" by Corinne Bailey Rae.

Over the years he has played live sets with Maceo Parker and Fred Wesley as well as Art Neville, George Porter Jr and Zigaboo Modeliste of The Meters. He's always maintained his own trio under his own name as a side project, releasing singles and EPs via ATA Records (uk) and Color Red Music (usa). A few years ago, he needed to find the time and place to record them. So in 2020, between New Mastersounds gigs, he managed to book a few days at a studio near Nashville USA, "The Rockhouse", run by Grammy winning engineer Kevin Mckendree. He hooked up with a couple of Nashville session musicians, Steve Mackie (double bass - longtime Dolly Parton bassist) and Kenneth Blevins (drums), and put down all his original songs and also a cover of Mose Allison's "Ever since the world ended", the first single released last year

Now comes the second double A-side single and a further taste of what's in store from Joe and the band later this year when the "Timeline" album drops later in the year. However this time, there's a lovely little black vinyl offering for all the record lovers out there. Just a small first pressing which will no doubt sell out very quickly so people need to jump on it super fast. Once they're gone, they're gone. Hodges, James & Smith were the mainstays of Mickey Stevenson’s post-Motown recordings and he gave them this fabulous Mikim Publishing song, written by Vicki Basemore and the redoubtable Leon Ware. Superbly orchestrated, after a dramatic intro, it hits an uptempo rhythm that epitomises the great girl soul sounds of the early 70s – somewhat reminiscent of the Supremes’ ‘Up The Ladder To The Roof’.

Kim Weston was Mickey’s most prolific solo act throughout his career and ‘It Takes A Lotta Teardrops’ is another triumph for her, albeit one that has only surfaced recently. It is another Basemore/Ware song from the late 60s which imitates the Motown sound exquisitely.

These tracks are from the early 70s, around the time he cut his eponymous first LP in Los Angeles with Mickey. ‘Say You’ is a superb updating of the Monitors’ harmony hit from 1965 and is given the distinctive, sensitive McNeir treatment.

‘I’m Sorry’ is a slow-burning song that builds into a perfect dancefloor beat. It was penned by Ronnie and his writing partner of the time, Andre Moore. The release is a taster of the complete, previously unreleased album we will issue on Ronnie later this year.

Pique-nique Recordings is proud to present 'The Harvest', the debut recording from trio Spencer Zahn, Austin Tufts, and Jacob Bergson. Recorded over a weekend in Montreal, the three musicians approached the session without any preconceived ideas of what they wanted to create. The result is a fully-realized record from three skilled players responding to one another live in the studio, effortlessly gliding through ambient post-rock and jazz. Tufts’ driving rhythms, Bergson’s soaring synthesizers, and Zahn’s melodic bass on ‘Mile X’ provide a beautiful opener, whilst the grounded and utterly beautiful ‘The Harvest’ creates a moment of all-encompassing stillness. This release is part of an ongoing series that aims to capture the New York City jazz scene in its current, always evolving form. "In October 2018, Jacob Bergson and I travelled from NYC to one of my favorite cities in the world, Montreal. The idea was to spend a week with my long-time friend and favorite drummer, Austin Tufts, who had recently built a studio for his band, Braids, on the edge of Mile-Ex. At the beginning of each day, we would prompt each other with a short idea or phrase and build on it together until an arrangement began to emerge. As the three of us fell into roles that we each play naturally, the music started to take shape. Pique-nique Recordings is proud to present 'Investigate and Enjoy', a deep musical conversation between two of New York City’s most prolific musicians, Dave Harrington and Kenny Wollesen. Harrington (Darkside) and Wollesen (Sex Mob) use a shared language of texture, groove, and space to craft intricate, free-formed, and inventive experimental music. Wollesen’s forceful percussion opens up side A, which grooves heavily underneath Harrington’s skittering electronics. The flip side features sparse yet rich guitar tones on what Harrington and Wollesen refer to as an “improvised ballad.” Both pieces resonate with a powerful mood as hints of late-Talk Talk and Battles permeate these unique recordings. This release is part of an ongoing series that aims to capture the New York City jazz scene in its current, always evolving form. "Of all of the things we've done together over the years, playing as a duo has been one of the most special to me. We never rehearse, we never play any songs, but Kenny and I find ourselves writing music together in real-time. Kenny is the rare drummer who has the ability to not only supply a sort of canvas for another musician to work inside of and to paint harmonically on, but he can make the frame around it, and he can splatter paint himself in a meaningful way that has the power to change the whole shape of the shared dream of an improvisation. Conjunto Papa Upa returns with “Todo Parao” (“Total Shutdown”), another boundary pushing tropical smasher. Bringing you the ultimate (humourous) hymn to the pandemic over an exquisite blend of highly danceable Caribbean rhythms (zouk, cadence, kompás, guaracha) and classic synths. Backed by a deep sea dub on the flip, complete with resplendent cowbell(!), timbales and Wurlitzer solos. Another stepping stone that showcases yet another angle of the unique and radical production style of Alex Figueira. Drop this 45 at your next virtual party and watch everybody leave their computers in a desperate search of a dancing partner. Conjunto Papa Upa is the Afro Caribbean centered solo project of Figueira, backed live bysome of the best musicians from Amsterdam’s Latin and free jazz scenes. Their debut LP was recently released on legendary American indie label Names You Can Trust. Figueira is also known for his percussive work on tropical psych power trio Fumaça Preta or his regular live incursions with Amsterdam’s turkish psych folk powerhouse, Altin Gun. Having spent the whole night working on the melodic structure of the song, Figueira took a break to take advantage of the different time zones and check on his dad in Venezuela, and ask how the pandemic was unfolding there. His answer: “Todo Parao” (“Total Shutdown”). The same two words he had used multiple times before, this time pronounced in a hilarious Rum-infused way, giving Alex an unexpected flush of inspiration in the form of an instant infectious chorus. He excused himself and immediately got locked back in the studio. The result is this incredibly catchy tune, displaying the optimistic approach of a boyfriend to the chaos, uncertainty and worrying of his girlfriend about the pandemic, presenting her with his own lascivious lockdown plan for the two, declaring at a certain moment: “while everyone is lamenting, you and I are going to enjoy”. In the musical side, rhythms from Haiti, Guadaloupe, Martinique, Puerto Rico and Cuba are unscrupulously mixed with the most diverse and strikking elements: strident cowbells that evoke the toughest salsa of 70's New York, harmonized guitars evidencing the inconfesable influence of 80’s heavy metal, a delicate Wurlitzer piano reminiscent of Black America’s greatest Soul ballads, Casio keyboards rescued from a child’s toy cabinet and a whole plethora of half-broken classic Synths, to create an equally irresistible and unclassifiable hybrid. On the flip side, Part 2 opens with a prominent dose of the lead guitar that appeared briefly on the A side, working as a preamble to an instrumentalist frenzy that is not concerned about displaying technique. Its mere intention is to tell you the rest of the story without using words. A few bars into the song, the first gear shifts with a monumental solo given by the least probable of all “soloist” instruments: the cowbell (!). After it, a crispy Timbal crashes the party, making a statement out of its only appearance in the entire recording. Finally, the longed-for turn of the melodious Wurlitzer, who left everybody craving for more on the other side of the record, giving the modest keyboard skills of Figueira an imposing pentatonic virtue.

Ace’s 45th anniversary 7-inch selection continues this month by taking us back to our roots, and bringing you incredible previously unreleased alternate takes of two all-time classics of rockin’ 1950s rhythm & blues.

R&B lovers will need no introduction to either Roy Brown’s ‘Boogie At Midnight’ or Lloyd Price’s ‘Lawdy Miss Clawdy’, but these recently discovered ‘Take One’s put whole new perspectives on two proven classics. The fast and furious ‘Boogie’ makes the issued 1951 master sound like a lullaby in comparison, while ‘Clawdy’ has an alternate opening line that would have guaranteed no airplay would have been forthcoming back in 1952.

Both tracks are taken from new transfers of the original acetate and tape sources, and both play loud and proud. Each side of the 45 offers a representation of the original label design that would have been used, had they been issued at the time of recording.

No self-respecting R&B singles collector will want to be without a copy of this essential commemorative single, featuring two of the greatest names in 1950s black American music.

In the early 1970s, the funk / soul band Power Of Attorney was formed at the Pennsylvania State Correctional Institution at Graterford (30 miles northwest of Philadelphia). The story of their formation is just as powerful as the music that they left behind.

In late 1972, the prison’s Activities Director Theodore “Ted” Wing broke ground on a new recording studio. As part of the rehabilitative arts and music initiative, the space was built to offer a creative outlet for incarcerated individuals to express their musical talents. In November of ‘72, an audition was held throughout the prison to form a band. It has been reported that over 1,600 men auditioned for a spot in the band.

Wing ultimately settled on a lineup that consisted of William Smith (lead guitar), Charles McDowell (bass), Merion Wilson (tenor saxophone), Edward J.X. Smith (guitar), and Otis Graham (drums). With a lineup of gifted musicians and a fresh new recording studio to practice and lay down tracks in, the band Power Of Attorney was officially born.
