Sensational – that’s Frank Hatchett! These words can be found on many of the 16 albums credited to the legendary NYC jazz dancer, choreographer, and teacher to the stars - Madonna, Brooke Shields, Olivia Newton-John, and Naomi Cambell. In the highlights compiled on this expansive double LP set, the sounds of Hatchett’s albums run the gamut from disco and funk in the 1970s to electro and proto-techno as they glide through the ’80s. Most tracks clock in at a brisk 2:30 – the ideal length for Hatchett’s classes or his students’ recital performances. Fans of library music will find a similar focus on immaculate performances, while the tightly coiled drum breaks, Afro-Cuban rhythms, and thumping 808s will send rare groove collectors into a state of head nodding bliss. Hatchett’s name and photos may appear on the sleeves of his records like Dance Crazy, Jazz Power, or Vop Style, but he is nowhere to be found in the music contained within. Instead, these albums dating back to 1974 were recorded by studio players under the guidance of musical director Don Tipton or arranger Zane Mark. Performers include: keyboardist Fred McFarlane (Madonna, Keith Sweat, Evelyn “Champagne” King), drummer Bernard Davis (Steve Winwood, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Kool & The Gang).

He also starred in the Netflix series The Eddy, produced by Damien Chazelle, and Le temps d"aimer, directed by Katell Quillévéré (Cannes Festival2023). The Bois-Caïman ceremony was Haiti"sfirst major collective uprising against slavery. On his new album, SpiriTuaL HeaLinG: Bwa KaYimaN FreeDoM SuiTe, Jowee performs his ancestors" revolution in his own way. Joweebrought together all his inner tubes, soprano,alto, tenor, wood, clarinets, piccolo _¼éute, cornet, that blows, that winds, that rumbles. Staying ahead of themselves was always important, and tricky too: they were on the (musical) trail of someone who preceded them, was ahead of himself, or at least ahead of his own epoch, the late 1950s, and theirs, the late 20th and early 21st century, in which he was, before they found him (or he found them, the way music finds you — and finds you out) present as no more than a discographical evanescence. The third Emperors New Clothes album recorded and produced in 1996 by Trevor 'Underdog' Jackson, rejected and ridiculed by the bands original label, the album sat unheard for decades and unreleased in its original intended format anywhere till now.

A gloriously twisted mix of jazz, post-rock, dub, no wave, noise & abstract beats played by a live five piece, the album sounds as strangely relevant today as it was wildly ahead of its time in 96.

In founder member Luke Hannam's own words.

"Just two months before the recording took place at the chapel studios in Lincolnshire ENC went through a major line up change with Leo Taylor recruited on drums and David Bateman added on guitar & additional programming, Ian Girdlestone on decks & tape looping and the two founding members Andy Knight- Sax, electronics, flutes, programming, keys & percussion and Luke Hannam on Bass.

The band had come along way from its earliest days as a three piece in the late 80s based in the northeast . ENC were always an unusual band formed around Andy's deep musicality and knowledge of free jazz and experimental music and Luke's love of intense groove and dark post punk. They were an unlikely pairing in someways but they lived closely and supported each other for years.

The 'Surreal Estate' project began as the third album loomed into view. Trevor Jackson who had contributed some fantastic remixes on previous material was hired as producer with Corrine 'The Sea' Pennington as an engineer. The band headed to their Brixton arch and set about making the most adventurous music of their career. The tracks that's you hear on this album were mostly recorded during extensive sessions at The Chapel residential studios in Lincolnshire followed by various additional session in London and also at Trevor's home studio. Recording sessions are funny things, stuff works, stuff fails, bands implode, and sometimes great albums get made, stability never makes the best music and this album probably proves both are true.

My memories of these sessions are pretty vivid, we worked through the night creating our own private universe playing music as freely and intensely as we could. Andy provided, as he always did a sense of otherworldly concentration, I always found him like a man in the centre of a storm building circles and cycles, spinning patterns of sound rhythm and melody. Leo was a relative newcomer at the time but as afar as I was concerned produced beats so intense, so perfect, they pulled my bass into line … visceral and exact. David Bateman listened and carefully spun delicious guitar parts finding space where others thought there was none to be found … it was beautiful to watch and when I listen I can see him in the shadows immersed in the music. Ian's loops and analogue textures found their perfect embrace with Andy's subsonic samples and electronic depth charging …. The whole thing lurched like an obscure On U sound recording colliding with Sun Ra in Trevor's hip hop universe".

The legendary TBN tag team, Tsuyoshi Yamamoto Trio and Yoshihiko Kannari, have revived and newly recorded this superb Erroll Garner album. Tsuyoshi Yamamoto and Yoshihiko Kannari, a former engineer for the TBM label, reunited on their last album "Blues for K" (scol-1062). The duo have also produced numerous world-class recordings from Japan, including "Midnight Sugar" and "Misty". Then in 2023, Yoshihiko Kaminari made his return to the Onkio Haus in Tokyo! They will once again be at this iconic studio, where the TBM label used to do recordings. The songs for this album are a collection of ballads, mainly by Erroll Garner, whom Tsuyoshi Yamamoto has always admired and loved. The result is a return to their roots and a challenging work for both of them.

The Memory Palace and Middlegame were both written in 2020 for the “Stone Commissioning Series,” a project created by saxophonist and composer John Zorn. The Memory Palace (by Miles Okazaki) debuted on February 26th, 2020 at National Sawdust in Brooklyn, NY. Middlegame (by Dan Weiss) was planned to debut a month later at the same venue, but was postponed by the onset of the global pandemic. Although these two musicians have appeared on a number of projects within various groups, this recording documents for the first time the language that they have developed over the course of 25 years performing together as a duo.

This project was made possible by John Zorn’s “Stone Commissioning Series” and by the generous support of The Shifting Foundation.

If one had to embody Eduardo Hopper with a single word, that word would be “virtuoso”- a term the master musicians he worked with often used in reference to him. His unusual harmonic approaches in compositions and in musical interpretations beguile the ear and instil curiosity in the listener. This talent is only matched by Hopper’s technical skills as an instrumentalist, illustrated especially by his mastery of the acoustic and electric guitars.

As a Brazilian music researcher, he travels through diverse and rich universes of sound. Inspired by the instrumentalists Baden Powell, Hélio Delmiro, Lula Galvão and Guinga on one hand, and Pat Metheny, Wes Montgomery, Bill Evans and Sonny Rollins on the other ; Hopper’s perfectionism becomes a tool, which allows him to work relentlessly until he is sure that every resource at his disposal has been used to express his vision.

Besides being a superb guitar player, he also plays the cavaquinho, the bass, the drums and the piano. He teaches music and is renown as a prolific creator of soundtracks for television programs, as well as music for commercials, etc. Throughout the 21 years of his career, he performed alongside many great names in Brazilian music, such as Francis Hime, Johnny Alf, Zimbo Trio, Dominguinhos, André Mehmari and Mônica Salmaso, among many others.

Born in 1983 in Santo André, a big industrial city, Eduardo Hopper began studying music at the precocious age of 4 years old by learning the guitar. He grew up surrounded by a festive and musical family environment. His determination and dedication also came from his parents, who were farm labourers and left the countryside in order to seek a better life. His first musical references were his father and siblings who played and rehearsed with relatives and friends at family gatherings.

Although he played in gospel music groups, he only began attending music school at the age of 13. Three years later, he was invited to replace his own teacher, thus starting his teaching career. In the meantime, he began composing which allowed him to gain entry to some of Brazil’s most prestigious music schools. Firstly, to Fundação das Artes in São Caetano do Sul, where under his teacher, Renato Santoro’s, guidance, he deepened his knowledge of guitar in popular Brazilian music. At the age of 19, he joined the Conservatório de Tatuí, the Institution supported by Hermeto Pascoal, where he further mastered the guitar with Fernando Correa, who was specialised in teaching Jazz and popular music.

At this point he was already touring professionally accompanying different bands and artists. At the Universidade Livre de Música de São Paulo, while he was guided by master Olmir Stocker, he was invited to join the orchestra Jovem Tom Jobim, at the time conducted by the maestro Roberto Sion. In this orchestra he had the opportunity to play with major names of the Brazilian pop music and contributed to the orchestra’s first album Álbum de Estréia.

Shabaka says he's done playing saxophone--including in his beloved groups Sons of Kemet, the Comet is Coming and Shabaka and the Ancestors--and his new solo album bears that out: it's filled with spiritual ruminations delivered on clarinet and flutes, a deeply felt work that is much different in tone than his firebrand sax work. I saw him play Pharoah Sanders' parts of Promises at the Hollywood Bowl in September, and wept for most of the performance; this album feels like a spiritual successor to Shabaka inhabiting the role of spiritual jazz's most revered monk. Featuring contributions from Moses Sumney--who sings his ass off--Brandee Younger, Carlos Nino, Ndudzo Makathini and a show-stopping flute performance by Andre 3000, this is my favorite album of the year so far in a walk. Joe Harley ist Mitbegründer und Koproduzent des renommierten amerikanischen Vinyl-Labels MUSIC MATTERS. Sein außerordentliches Gespür für die Klangästhetik des LP-Formats brachte ihm den Titel "Tone Poet" ein. Anlässlich seines 80. Label-Jubiläum beauftragte Blue Note Records den "Klangpoeten" damit, einige Alben für eine exklusive LP-Edition zusammenstellen. Diese rein analogen, d.h. ohne digitale Zwischenschritte gefertigten Reissues werden von Kevin Gray (Cohearent Audio) von den originalen Masterbändern neu gemastert und bei Record Technology Incorporated (RTI) auf 180g-Vinyl gepresst. Die Originalcover werden als schwere, laminierte Gatefold-Sleeves faksimiliert. Dabei wird eine Hüllenfertigung angewendet, deren Name nur LP-Gourmets etwas sagen dürfte: Tip-on-Sleeve. Wie zur Zeit der schweren, stabilen Papphüllen der fünfziger und sechziger Jahre wird auch hier eine stabile Papp-Grundlage mit glänzend laminierter Oberfläche verbunden.
